After getting home with an order of house fried rice to go I discovered the meat was overcooked to the point of being inedible, so I called to see about getting a coupon for the next time, so I would not have to drive all the way back to the restaurant. Manager said no, bring it back. Before I left I made the critical mistake of not dumping the small bowl I served my wife back into the to go container. Admittedly, between my wife, son and I we did eat three shrimp, which were rubbery, I did not finish mine. Upon arrival at the restaurant this prompted an argument with the manager who she said there was too much rice missing and the shrimp were gone. Should we have spit them back into the container? Was I trying to pull and elaborate ruse to get an extra half cup of rice and three more rubbery shrimp? The manager never apologized nor acknowledged the poorly prepared dish in front of her, and said she could only give me more rice, and maybe some beef, but not another house fried rice, and was unwilling to budge. I became quite irritated, and told her to keep the rice, that I would never be back and that I would contact the franchisee. Could not find them, so thought of Yelp. I'm not some kid trying to pull a fast one. I'm amazed a business owner could not assess and correct the situation, instead of insultingly haggling over three shrimp and some rice. I was feeling a little low on mercury and came here to get my sushi fix. I only got to eat half a lunch and service really sucked. The prices of sushi here compare to the big name sushi joints, but this little place is not nice enough to charge $8-10 per roll. There is a list of cheaper sushi with $4.25 whatever that means. The first roll is $3.50 and the second is $4.25 and you have to buy soup to get a second roll. The third roll costs $2.20. There's no rhyme or reason. It must have just sounded good. I ordered the sushi combo for one for $16 and I also ordered a fried calamari. About 15 minutes after I ordered, I saw a plastic box go together and sit on the counter. They were making a lot of carry out orders so I figured it was one of those. The sushi chef goes to sit at the bar and play on his phone for 5 or 10 minutes. Then finally the lady brought that same box to me. After I took the plastic lid off of it, she came by and snatched that lid off my table and put it back in her stack. I had to remind her I ordered calamari. After about 5 minutes of having my sushi, (25-30) after ordering, she tells me they're out of calamari. She actually asks if I want her to take it off the bill! She was serious as a heart attack and waited for an answer! Yes, take it off the bill, please! I asked why it took all this time to tell me that and now I don't have time to wait for something else. She said it took so long because the kitchen's messy. The kitchen's messy? That's what she told me. There was some kind of nasty fish that looked, smelled, and tasted wrong. I asked what it was and she said white fish. White what? I asked. She said white tuna. I asked if its not escolar and she denied it with a shake of her head but offered no proof. I'm pretty sure they served me escolar. It makes people sick so I didn't eat it. I also didn't get to eat my appetizer so I didn't get a full meal. I suppose I'm lucky to get something to eat. The guy working there has a bandage on his right hand and there are open wounds all over his arm that look like a gnarley motorcycle wreck. I eat at the summer location often and was interested to see the difference in the two locations. I have to say we enjoyed our lunch at this location. The salad dressing was way more on the horseradish side than the ginger side but was good. The waiter was efficient but also seemed like we were bothering him from watching his soccer game. The rolls and tuna tataki were both good but the fried cheese puffs were not cooked well at all. I would rate this lunch closer to 4 stars compared to other visits. This is a fairly priced place to grab a quick lunch. Great place for lunch and/or sushi. This is another location just like the one at Mt. Moriah and Park. We ordered lunch for the office today. I split a Pork Katsu Bento Box ($9.95) and a Black Pepper Tuna Roll ($10.00.) The pork was a tad dry and bland and I'm not a fan of shumai, however that could just be my issue as I've not had them elsewhere. The shrimp tempura is the pre-battered type but I found it tasty enough. The tuna roll was quite good and fairly large. The contrast of the pepper and sweet mango was surprisingly good! My lunch buddy agreed with my comments on our food choices. A friend picked the shrimp and chicken combo meal served with fried rice and sautéed zucchini, mushrooms and onion. She was very happy and commented that the flavor of everything was very good, the meats were moist and the flavor of the vegetables were better than she's had at pricier places. The last member of our group ordered the two standard rolls and soup for $6.95 - a California roll and a spicy tuna roll. Pretty standard choices and they came as expected. Came here with the hubby in the late afternoon for some lunch. The place seemed pretty dead for an afternoon but that just meant we had faster service. Well we thought we would, but then more people came out of no where. We ordered the chicken katsu, pork katsu, and fried calamari. The fried calamari is an appetizer but it was served along with our meals for some reason. The chicken katsu was delicious and juicy. The pork katsu seemed very thin or overly beaten, whatever you want to look at it. The pork katsu was also very dry, which made me feel like I needed more sauce to make it edible. The fried calamari was delicious. It wasn't overly battered like most places and you could see that you were actually eating fresh squid. With the katsu, they served fried rice in little to go containers. The fried rice was very bland, makes it seem like white jasmine rice had more flavor than this. It was different to see that everything that we were being served were in to go containers when we said that this was for here. Honestly, I don't mind it that much, but I definitely missed the whole feeling of real plates, cups, and etc when I say I'm eating it here. Service was not the greatest. The server came to us a total of 3 times. One to give us the menu and water. Second was to give us the food. Third was to give us the bill. We went up to the cashier to pay for our meal. After we paid, and saw that the server wasn't throwing away our empty dishes after standing with the cashier for 5 minutes, we felt that this was the type of place that you have to clean up after yourself. Honestly, you might as well just get your order to go since you have to eat out of to go containers to begin with and clean up after yourselves like you were at home. Didn't feel the server deserved the tip we gave him, but we understand that this is their only source of income. Overall the place is small yet has spacious seating. Service isn't the greatest, and food is alright for what you pay for. It is definitely affordable and there is enough food to have you feeling satisfied. Revising my review downward to reflect a downward trend in food quality and service (More so the latter). It seems lately that call in orders are told a certain timeframe. Even showing up significantly later still does not result in the food being ready upon arrival. Today I called in an order with 45 to 50 minutes notice Letting them know that I will be in a hurry when I arrive. When I walked in I found only half of my order prepared, making me late for my meeting. The morning commute. Starbucks in the strip mall off Kirby and Quince has a drive thru. This day the drive thru is closed. I am forced to park and go in. By happenstance, I park in front of a restaurant two doors down. Tokyo Grill. Never paid attention to it before. I step out of my middle class oversized SUV and step up on the sidewalk as I watch people continue to drive around the building to hit the drive-thru for the 'Bucks and I giggle. I see the infamous asian joint printed menu taped to the window. My eye catches Bento Box. Say whaaaaat?! Next to the window bolted fiercely to the bricks, was a little menu holder chocked full of their menus. Snag. I know whats for lunch today. Off to the Starbucks for the Flat White. Fast forward to lunch. "Yo boss, found a new joint, you down?" slides him the menu. "Yep, lets roll". We roll. Joint is tiny, seats about 20. (So hurry and bring your jukebox money...you get that right?) Its clean, theres people seated, chowing down. That makes me happy, folks enjoying the food. There's 3 MGU (Memphis Gang Unit) scarfing down some sushi with chopsticks and as my eyes pan over to the gentleman with the gorgeous Yanagiba (sushi sword, cmon you know these words, dont slack) slicing up some rolls he had just made. The lady behind the counter finally puts down the phone of the call in orders and takes our orders. We order identical steak and chicken combos. Me with miso, boss no miso. 10 minutes later, our orders are ready after 4 or 5 others who had the sense to call in pick up their orders. This Japanese lady with a purple ponytail reveals herself form the magical curtain, the curtains that all good asian joints have to hide the giant woks on 5 foot flames, with our styrofoam clad goodies. I ask her if this lunch was busy or slow. She says slow. I retort that now I know to call ahead. She grins with some approval. We take our food and head back to the office. Head to separate desks. I fire up the Netflix and open the steamy styrofoam. The smell hits you, mmm hmmm. Steak done right, chicken tastes perfect, the friend rice has just the right flavor, butteriness and stickiness and the soy covered veggies. So good, steak and chicken done just right. Soup is great, overall a great meal. Boss strolls by, "whaddaya think?" "It's gooood" I say. "Yea, chicken was just perfect, I'd go back." Very disappointed!!!! The sushi and sashimi tasted okay, nothing to rave about. Tempura (shrimp and vegetable), fried rice, and gyoza (pork dumplings) had no taste and very bland. The yakitori (morsels of chicken on the stick) was fried vice char grilled. A no no in yakitori world. The tempura udon soup broth tasted like dishwater. The udon noodles is packaged not fresh. I asked the waitress why my udon soup is taking so long because we were almost done eating the rest of the food, her answer was "The noodles are home made, that is why it is taking so long." When I finally got my soup, I tasted the broth first and tasted the noodle, it is not home made and I could have cooked a better udon soup from a package. The waitress did not have to lie. I have visited the Kirby location twice now. I have been looking for an easy place to grab some sushi to take home. A lot of sushi joints are more traditional restaurants which feel a bit awkward when ordering and picking up. This isn't so at Tokyo Grill. They have a simple walk up and order atmosphere. It doesn't take long to get your order. The sushi itself was great and was actually cheap in price. I bought several rolls and even with tip it was cheap. The quality of fish was decent. I know everyone always worries about "will this make me sick?" I never once had any issues. With all of that said, there were some downsides. First of all they cake on the spicy mayo. So, I suggest NOT ordering anything with the spicy mayo. If you do make sure to ask them to go light or not at all. Overall, not a bad place. read more
