I recently took my family to Benihana to celebrate a graduation, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. I chose Benihana because I've had good experiences in the past and wanted my family to enjoy the same fun atmosphere and hibachi show for their first time, but this visit was nothing like I remembered. The wait actually wasn't bad, but once seated they squeezed 10 people at one table which made everything feel crowded and uncomfortable. Our chef came out with sweat literally dripping down his face and seemed rude and irritated anytime my mom asked simple questions about the food. The biggest disappointment was that we never really got the Benihana "show" experience at all. The eggs and fried rice were burnt, and all of the meats were mixed together into the rice. The food was so bad that after leaving, several of us ended up going to get fast food. To their credit, the manager handled the complaint professionally by comping the meal and offering to feed us on our next visit, which I appreciated. We had several people checking on us, including our server who was fabulous. The atmosphere was quite nice even though there were other people around, it was still a very nice vibe. Went to Benihana expecting a nice experience but it was honestly a mess. We were seated late even though we had been waiting, and the waitresses came off really rude from the start. After we got our drinks, we didn't see our waitress again for a long time and had to ask for her. I ordered the steak hibachi, but by the time it came out I didn't even want to eat it. I ended up packing it up and leaving. On top of that, the staff started arguing with each other while we were still sitting there, which was super uncomfortable. This review is based on an order placed via Uber Eats. I placed an order for the Tokyo Wings and Hibachi Chicken Fried Rice deal for 2. It is supposed to come with 2 salads, an edamame appetizer, 2 servings of fried rice and 15 wings, with choice of sauce. I also added a spicy tuna roll as well. When I received my food, I did not have any hibachi rice at all. They subbed the rice for soup, which I did not ask for. That was a bit of a let down because my husband and I both were really looking forward to the rice more than anything. As far as the rest of the food...unfortunately, I did not enjoy anything other than the chicken. The soup was not very flavorful. The salad wasn't anything special. The edamame was okay. 2 stars for the review because I actually did enjoy the chicken. I ordered black pepper teriyaki sauce for the wings and it was pretty good. The sushi was also a let down. Well, this was definitely one of the most memorable birthday dinners... This is the first time I had been to Benihana that not only had a security guard out front, but the establishment said, due to safety concerns, they do not hand out metal knifes, so you get a plastic one. At first, I really thought that they were kidding. After thinking it was a joke, the waitress made clear she was not joking. Despite the plastic knife and the guard on duty, the wait staff, bartender, hostess, and entire team was very pleasant, positive, and fun!! They had an amazing sense of humor and they kept us entertained with their good cheer. For the ambiance, this poor Benihana has seen better days. It has had a lot of wear and tear, but it was clean and decent considering the volume of food they cook and is consumed there. I had the hot house sake, and it was delightful and took the edge off the security situation. The food was very good and they have a kick ass $39 weekday deal. I think it is just during the week, but it might be everyday. You get your choice of soup or salad, appetizer from gyoza to dumplings, choice of chicken, steak, or shrimp for the main entree, cooked vegetables, and a choice of 2-3 desserts. They allowed us to switch the dessert for a soup or salad, so they were very accommodating to your requests. This is definitely one where you cannot judge a book by its cover. We had a 5:30 reservation to sit at one of the tables with a grill and once seated we sat at the table for at least an hour and a half with no chef showing up until we said that we were probably going to leave to go somewhere else. I don't blame the chefs or the servers as this is not their fault and they were nice and attentive. When we left the manager was very rude and talking bad about us and said this is normal and that they only have 4 chefs. If that's the case then they shouldn't take more reservations than they can handle, or at least let us know before we are seated. When we were seated there were 5 other parties of 6+ that were also seated at the same time and only one had a chef at the grill. Our group of 11 (including two little ones) went to celebrate a family members 20th birthday...all happy to get together & entertained by the chef. We were seated around a hot grill with very little air conditioning. After waiting 1hour & 15 minutes we asked if there was a problem. They said the cart was on the way. 15 more minutes passed so we said should we come back another time. The little lady said he's coming... almost through. As he rolled up to our table, the table next to us (who were obviously celebrating a birthday too) sadly gathered their things & left without being served. They were seated at the same time as us. The hatless cook was too exhausted to even smile & so were we. The little ones were being rocked & consoled. Some of us were famished & some had lost their appetite after waiting for so long over a hot grill. The steak was very fatty & of low quality. The salad wilted iceberg & dressing. The chef is the only part that made the experience star worthy. He was funny, and a great cook. He asked us all if our steak looked good or if we wanted it cooked more. I prefer a bit more cooked on outside- with the fried marks, and it was more steamed than I'd like BUT it was still great. We waited 20 mins for a table, ok, not unusual for Benihana, but when we were seated, we waited 40 mins for drinks alone. It wasn't insanely busy, so I was shocked. And the passion fruit matcha was not the best I've had. Could be the fruit is not in season, fine, but the wait, not cool. Especially with a visible manager on the floor and what seemed to be only 2 waitresses for both bar area and hibachi tables, which at the time were only 2 tables full. We didn't get asked if we wanted refills. Maybe it's different in Memphis but we also got offered soup OR salad and back home, we get both.
