THIS is MY sushi joint. I eat it there or I get it to-go. I feel like I'm at home with, family when I stop by. I love the water features around the restaurant. The patio is pretty at night. I go here for all occasions: To catch up with pals, for a date night, for a lunch meeting or just to grab a meal on-the-go. To-go orders usually take 20 minutes because everything is made to order. I love the Crab Deluxe Salad! The ginger salad dressing is SO good! I wish I had the recipe. It's not watery. You can actually taste tiny bits of ginger in it. I love Sekisui! I go there for my birthday dinners and any time I am asked were to go for dinner. I love the kids sushi combo but the might up charge for it it someone older than 12 is getting it, but so worth it. We went there for dinner tonight right before they open at 5:00 pm. Was told we could sit wherever. Only 2 Waitress in the restaurant and one was in training. We came for their Early Bird menu. This place unfortunately is a hard pass for me in the future. Where do I start? Chicken teriyaki: the amount of salt in the sauce was through the roof. Sushi: small tiny rolls for the price paid. 8 small pieces in each $10-12 roll. They were also bland and unmemorable. Environment: this affected my impression of the restaurant the most. It was dirty, stuffy, and random junk was piled on the chairs and the countertops. Flies and gnats were swarming around us all dinner long. The tables were sticky and everything just looked and felt like it was covered in a layer of grime. If this is how the customer frequented area looks, how sanitary is the kitchen where they handle and serve raw food?! A group of about 6 of us went on a Friday about 5:30pm. First of all, we wanted to sit outside but their patio consisted of 2 picnic tables. No thank you. Three of our party got their dinner, the others waited and waited and waited. While the first 3 were already done with their dinners, the other 3 are just getting theirs. The kitchen was incredibly slow or short staffed or something. When we questioned the server, his response was "yeah, I know, but I'm not cooking." No apology, or "what can I do to help". Sekisui has been our go to sushi haunt that is close to our home in midtown. We have been 4-5 times and it always fulfills our sushi cravings. - We typically go pretty late here, as the earlier times that we have been the wait has been pretty hefty and the inside of the restaurant can get to be pretty loud and hectic. The ambiance is pretty standard for a sushi joint, nothing that blows you away by any means, but nothing weird or out of place. - We always get misos to start, and have tried some of the tempura apps - I was disappointed by the tempura as it was pretty soggy when I had it, so I haven't tried it again. The rolls are really what we like, and I always manage to try a different roll every time, as their signature roll menu is pretty large. My wife loves the rolls that she gets, typically salmon rolls and variants of such. All around we appreciate having sekisui be so close, as it takes care of the sushi cravings! read more

Sekisui has a really cool atmosphere. It is decorated in a way that reflects Memphis but also Japanese culture which I really enjoyed. We got seated immediately and received water. But we stood there - the only people at the host stand - for 10 minutes & no one even acknowledged our existence. There was also a guy using a very loud drill. They don't even take reservations. The place looks junky, there's stuff lying around on counters, and it's not that clean. Overall, the staff was very unfriendly & unprofessional. We walked out & I almost broke my neck on the immediate stepdown. That exit has been dangerous for years. You'd think they'd want yo avoid lawsuits. 0/10 do not recommend. The place is garbage now. We were seat d quickly and had water brought and waitress came to take drink order. I asked for a minute....and over 10min later she returned. My Thord salad looked NOTHING like the pic and was messy looking but hunger took over. My husband got the Ika Fry and found it ok, a simple dish. The sushi was good, bland, and chewy. We ordered a 4 2oz sake flight and the sake was warm ...supposed to be cold. Honestly I do not know what to write... it wasn't bad but it wasn't great? What has happened to Sekisui Midtown? Please tell me... maybe it was a sentimental favorite because we've celebrated birthdays and had many of meals here because it was close to the hospital. Something has changed it was very smoky, like they needed to open a window or door or invest in a fan. The food was fine but service is very and I mean very slow it's painful. I don't know if we will go back and that makes me sad. As I have mentioned we've had some special moments at Sekisui over the years. I've been eating at this place for YEARS, and the last two times I was here I left disappointed in the service Tonight was no exception. My wife and I drove like a bat out of hell to get there early enough to be seated before closing at 9 pm. We walked in at 8:18, which is early enough to not be rude or inconvenience the staff. Two female employees asked us "can I help you?" We were then told that "you won't get a table before we close". I looked at my watch and saw it was 8:20 pm. This place is has to be one of my new favorite places to get sushi. This place and Sakura is in a ring right now for being the top places I've had sushi in Memphis. The place is very small so if you plan to go with a big group I suggest calling in and making a reservation. Overall if you're there with a few friends I would recommend the sushi bar. The guys behind the bar make your sushi right in front of you and everything they made was delicious. Compared to other places in Memphis your roll will not fall apart as you attempt to pick it up with chop sticks. I suggest the S-P roll if you like sushi with a kick, but they also have my favorite two piece which is the Amaebi or sweet shrimp with the deep fried heads. Of course that sounds weird to many but the heads are the best part esp. if you like crunchy. Overall this place is a hidden dime and a great find. Hope you all enjoy. read more

This is my favorite Sekisui location. I used to prefer Pacific Rim on Poplar, but their service left a bad taste in my mouth...although the service here isn't that great either. They don't have enough waitresses at this location and they are constantly running around. Wouldn't it just be easier to hire someone? On the bright side, this location seems to have fresher sushi? I don't know how that is possible (since I assume they order from the same place and time) but the food is always better at this one. And I don't know why some people are knocking the atmosphere here. Yeah SPR has neon lights but this place has that midtown vibe that is quirky and cool. And I love their patio! I didn't expect to post a review based solely on a take out experience but omg, my sushi was amazing! I had the Qualls roll with tempura veggies (shiitake, bell peppers, sweet potato, and carrots), veggie roll, and avocado roll. The veggie and avocado were good, but the Qualls roll was amazing and I'll definitely be back for it! I haven't had a good roll with tempura sweet potato since the sushi spot that used to be next door to the Beauty Shop resto in Cooper Young closed, but I digress. I love the Sekisui Pacific Rim location and hope dining in at the Midtown location is just as awesome. I'll be back to add another star. :) TL;DR: Add a Qualls roll to your order. They do a good job with all of the rolls I've had here, and though I've tried about a million different varieties, I still like the simple Crunchy Shrimp the best. Yeah...I know. It's like always ordering vanilla ice cream at Baskin Robbins. Call me boring. I miss the sushi boats they used to have here at lunchtime. It was soooo cute and a really good deal. Sekisui has changed from what I remember. The first delicate piece of raw fish that ever crossed my mouth was here, but that was 25 years ago. The space itself is fractured and a little confusing. Front area is a bar of sorts - but very tight. The restaurant is is kinda odd. Green marble bar w/ neon, Elvis screen prints on the wall. Parts of this restaurant would have been Memphis cool in 1990. The music would have ben cool in 1990 too. I sat at the sushi bar, which did not help. I had a full view of the sushi prep, the area was dirty and overcrowded. The chef coughed into his hand and then used it to prepare food. I'm pretty sure there is not a Japanese person in this place. The wait service was good, very attentive. Sekisui roll was tasty with a smoky mayo, but if this is the size of all the rolls - they are on the small side. Be warned. Nigiri had uneven wasabi, and the wasabi was pretty harsh and horseradish-y. I would not recommend. Rice was disappointing. I understand that Memphis is not exactly sushi heaven, but this was was a total pass. read more

Sekisui is a great option for lunch or dinner. We visited sekisui for a work recruitment lunch. Most of the known food joints in town are barbecue-related, and Sekisui offers a strong alternative should you need to accommodate someone who does not prefer barbecue. This was my third visit to Sekisui, and like the previous two visits, there was not a long wait for a table. When you first arrive, the outside of the building can be a bit off-putting considering there are bars on the windows, but what awaits you inside is worth the courage to enter this establishment. Service is good as our server was very attentive and friendly. All of the employees seemed happy to work there which adds to a pleasant atmosphere. There are many pop artworks throughout the restaurant of Elvis and few if any of anything sushi-related, which adds to a somewhat hipster feel and a trendy venue. The sushi itself is delicious and fresh. For an appetizer we ordered the fried crab. I enjoyed the fried crab, but it's chewiness did not appeal to the rest of the group. For the meals we ordered a sashimi lunch, dragon roll + sushi lunch, and bento box. I found the dragon roll delicious and appreciated the presentation of the lunches and box. The sushi was neatly arranged and very appetizing. Whether you are looking for a work lunch option or a casual meal, Sekisui is definitely worth a visit. read more

So for Memphis this is a 4 star. In comparison to other US locations this falls into 3 stars in comparison. Good size Sushi bar and Japanese beer on tap (very nice). Sushi is about medium quality (medium quality is good). The sushi menu is the gas the best layout I have seen. It lets you order for up to 5 people and no confusion because it comes with instructions. This menu should be the standard. Sake and Soju selection has been well thought out and worth ever penny trying here. Parking can be tight for dinner on the weekend and you may have to park across the street. read more

I'd really like to give Sekisui 3 1/2 stars. During happy hour, they have 2 for 1 sake. It' not the flavored sake, but it's good, just the same. The gyoza (pan seared pork dumplings) is my favorite. I can make a meal of just that! Last night, I tried the Tsunami, Grizzlies (in honor of how well the Grizz are doing, currently) and the Arctic rolls. The Tsunami was as spicy as expected, but were really "fishy." The other two rolls were delicious. I sat at the sushi bar and was sad that they no longer had the fish/sushi boats that flowed around the sushi bar. If you saw something you liked, you just grabbed it as it floated by. I thought it was a great way to discover something new. Initially, the server was extremely attentive. He even gave us our second sake without us asking. His timing could not have been more perfect. However, after our food arrived, we never saw him again. Someone took our plates away, refilled our water (no joke...like 100 times - that guy took his water filling job uber seriously. Not that I minded.), but no sign of our server. Finally, we asked someone to ask our waiter for our check. Had the service not been so poor toward the end of the meal, I would have had no problem giving Sekisui 4 stars. I'll definitely be back. The food is good, the atmosphere is good, the people are nice, and your water glass is always filled. :-) Oooo, and Sekisui Midtown had a bike rack installed a few weeks ago.
