Although Tokyo is normally a takeout spot, they do have a dining area if you choose to stay and enjoy your meal. I had the Dynamite Roll. It's ingredients include white fish, salmon, scallion, crab meat in side, deep fried whole roll with special sauce. I also had the Hurricane Roll. It has Spicy crawfish, cream cheese, crab meat inside deep fried with eel sauce on top. Both were amazing and you get a great serving size for only $9.99 each. My mother in law loves this place and I will admit it usually hits the spot for quick Japanese/sushi fixes. Service has been good every time I have dined in, although the take out game seems to be more utilized. Any of the tempuras are good, the soup servings are huge and the rolls are all as advertised. I will advise that while Tokyo Grill may be a small restaurant, the menu is large and the options are bountiful. Huge quantify and tastes delicious. Fish was good quality and they don't skimp you out by adding too much rice. This was in close proximity to my training so it was perfect. Parking isn't ample but I found a spot right in front. Greeted upon entrance and seated promptly. Menu is pretty straight forward. I had the pork katsu bento box and my friend had the summer roll. We also ordered hibachi, California, vegetable and spicy shrimp sushi roll with miso soup to go. The workers are friendly and pleasant. The food came out fast and the prices were reasonable. The 3 rolls and miso soup to go were almost $12. Because the food comes out fast, attention isn't given to details. The rolling of the sushi roll is not tight so everything falls out. What a pleasant experience. I love the rolls + miso soup deals they have; it's a great way to try different sushi's for a reasonable price. I tried four rolls: Spicy California roll, Avocado and Shrimp, Spicy Salmon, and the Alaska roll. I enjoyed all! The miso soup was a little salty for me, so I just added a bit of my complimentary water which also cooled it a little. One last thing, the spicy mayo was spicier than I'm used to! Tokyo Grill is walking the same fast-casual line as places like Panera or Chipotle - better than fast food, but more casual and affordable than other Japanese restaurants in town. They've got a nice dining room, but their primary business seems to be take out. Several parts of my meal (but not all of it) were served in to-go containers, which seemed a little weird for dining in, but it made packing up the leftovers easy. And I had a lot of leftovers, mostly because I ordered way too much food. Tokyo Grill's menu is extensive for such a small restaurant, and my friend John and I had a hard time choosing. We were the only people in the restaurant, so the waitress came and took our order very quickly. When we weren't able to make any concrete decisions after asking for more time, I just started ordering things. We started with an order of crab rangoon. I know that crab rangoon is fairly standard, but whatever wrappers Tokyo Grill used were better than most. They were perfect little crispy fried triangles filled with sweet cream cheese and crabmeat. We also got sushi - a Spider Roll (on the server's recommendation) and a deep-fried Yummy Roll. Both rolls were good and fresh, but not spectacular. On the Memphis sushi spectrum, they fall somewhere between gas station sushi and Ryu. The best thing we ordered, though, was the Pine Nut Tuna. When I placed the order, I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting - it was listed as coming from the sushi bar, but didn't mention any kind of roll. What I got was a long dish of cubed raw tuna and chunks of fresh avocado, topped with a soy-based special sauce and sprinkled with pine nuts, sesame seeds and roe. It was sort of like Japanese ceviche. Pine Nut Tuna, Tokyo Grill, Memphis, Tenn. I ate it with chopsticks, but next time, I'll probably take it home, make some wonton chips and eat it like salsa. Their sushi is pretty good. The last two times I got the Philadelphia Roll, the Volcano Roll (so far my fave, but they kept forgetting the spicy mayo), and the Naruto Roll (this roll smelled and tasted extremely fishy and was not a fan favorite). I don't really find myself gravitating towards their entrees. Their Yakisoba is not what I'm used to. It honestly tastes like lo-mein to me (very sweet sauce). I will say that with the entrees, the quantity is OVERWHELMING. They stuff the containers...so you are getting your money's worth. Lastly, a warning to those who eat meat: they fry EVERYTHING in the same oil - and when I asked them about this, the guy who I spoke with over the phone was extremely rude about it...not sure why??? The food here is comically bad. Like, if not for how low Memphis in general has pushed my expectations I would suspect I was actually being pranked. I live MAYBE three minutes away (less than two miles). Yet when I opened the package I found warm room-temp sushi. Just a heads up for anyone who doesn't know this- sushi should not be warm. Raw fish should not be stored at a room temperature. Next, eight pieces of sushi in one order should warrant more than a pea sized ball of wasabi- even if it is crappy paste. Also two packets of soy sauce is not enough. Note: restaurant was not busy- they had plenty of time to not make this sort of junior mistake. And now for the picture- the rice portion had roughly the footprint of three pennies. I tried to hold the penny as low as possible so everything is in the same scale. If you've just driven past this Tokyo Grill at Park and Mendenhall, you can be forgiven for not going in. It doesn't, after all, look like much. In fact, it looks like it's takeout-only. Not the case! There's a pretty fair seating area, on the order of a dozen tables or so. I'm an eater-inner, not a taker-outer, so that's important. Hard chairs, I must point out, and want to say to owners Anna and Aaron: "Soft chairs, please!" (And, since it's my profession, I want to say also: "Aaron, hire an editor next time you redo this menu...") One bias: I'm not big on sushi, so I've not tried more than a few pieces of Tokyo Grill's sushi, and those only on the tame end of the range. Quite nice, I thought, and I've heard others' favourable reviews. TG has a great Chinese menu, too. That menu, please know, is a little westernized. If you wanted some deeply "authentic" experience, this ain't the place. But if you'd like a place that delivers a good variety of consistently well-prepared, healthy, decidedly tasty fast-food Chinese, go here. Chinese restaurants in Memphis are typically sooooo bad. (Dump chop suey in plastic folding container. Issue plastic fork. Serve. Enjoy. Yee-hah. You know the routine.) But in the realm of fast-food oriental, these guys are radically different. GREAT food. LOTS of choices. What's more, you'll get FRIENDLY SERVICE at the Park-Mendenhall Tokyo Grill. My wife Liz and I are regulars. If we don't want to cook, one of us just says, "Tokyo?" and we're there.
