I was not as impressed this time. We were greeted and sat upon entering at the hibachi table. There was a weird odor in the area which was unpleasant. Minor things that made me change my stars. Was helped quickly with a drink and had the veggie tempura to start. Was well cooked veggies but was a thicker batter than I am accustomed to. A long delayed date night saw us at Tokyo Garden in midtown Tulsa. My first adventure to a Japanese restaurant did not disappoint. The onion soup was an excellent appetizer on a cold night. We ordered shrimp Tempura as a shared course. It lived up to the description I had heard of Tempura shrimp made by Alton Brown. It was light, crispy and not at all greasy or gummy. I ordered the Sakura. It included filet mignon and chicken. The steak was very tender as it should be. The chicken was also tender and coated in the best tasting Asian sauce I have ever had on chicken. The noodles were also excellent and I ate all of mine (a rarity for me) The show was quite enjoyable and the atmosphere relaxed and cordial. This place is the worst service. We sat and ordered. Chef came to table to cook and the manager seated 4 people as he was pouring our sauce. So he left and said he's be back. Waited over 45 minutes. The table next to us came in 12 minutes afterwards and have almost finished and we haven't began. Asked for the manager Cheyenne who said that's how they do things, they are understaffed and if I didn't like it I could leave. I will not return to any of their locations, though I have been a loyal customer for years. I have always liked shoguns, but they seem to have gone downhill. So I decided to try Tokyo Garden as other others have recommended it. To me it's no different than shoguns, it was actually worse. It was just as dirty just as dingy and the food was actually not good at all. So much of it was tasteless and the shrimp tasted fishy like it was old. The noodles tasted like a glob of starchy pasta. I was super disappointed. Our server we had to ask for things over and over and over because he would forget them. The chef was a nice guy you could tell he was probably newer. Not going to lie - walking into this restaurant on a Thursday night to grab takeout and seeing at least 50 customers, inside, crammed closely without masks damn near gave me a panic attack. Oklahoma, what are you doing?!? Anyway, I ordered ahead: Kid's shrimp (hibachi shrimp, soup, rice, noodles and veggies), a caterpillar roll, a spicy tuna roll ($6 and bigger than I expected), and a lobster/shrimp hibachi meal (rice, noodles, shrimp, lobster, veggies, soup, salad). The shrimp was good, but definitely a bit over cooked. The veggies were also over-cooked. They were pretty soggy - oh, and the veggies were super low budget. I had one piece of zucchini and one carrot. The rest were bean sprouts and cabbage. They tasted like nothing. Speaking of nothing, the noodles were bland AF and I'd recommend subbing rice. The fried rice ($1.75 upcharge) needed soy sauce. Furthermore, I got it in a small, styrofoam container - of which it only filled on the bottom half about half way. I think I got eight shrimp and four tiny pieces of lobster. It's supposed to be a lobster tail, but it looks like they skimp by cutting it into pieces and adding a couple to an empty shell. Def not worth the $26+ cost. Overall, I spent $61. It got the job done but could've been so, so much better. If you want hibachi in a pinch or on a rainy night, order from them. I used to really love this restaurant but it's gone down quite a bit. If you go in knowing you're paying for more the experience rather than service then you shouldn't be disappointed. Pros: you get a lot of food, the chef is comical and entertaining and you get a good experience. Very friendly Cons: They appear to be super understaffed, and I think my complaints last night stem from this because all my complaints are related to service. MAKE a reservation!!!!! They were incredibly busy for a week night which led to super slow service. I didn't have a fork so I didn't get to eat my salad until everyone else was done because there was no one around to check on our group since they're so understaffed. There wasn't a hostess for 10 minutes since anyone there was super busy running around. It took 35 min to be seated and then about an hour before it was over. So you're there for a long time which I wouldn't mind if I had service. Ran out of our mixed drinks which took a very long time before we could get a refill. Edamame was very overcooked, unless you like mushy soggy edamame. When I lived in the armpit of Oklahoma otherwise known as Tulsa, I used to go to this place all the time. Now it's just when I'm in the neighborhood every so often. It tends to be more often than I care for, but that's just because I of my horrible experience in Oklahoma. Tokyo Garden was the first place I ever had Hibachi food AND Sushi. Yes, in this ever expanding fish bowl we live in the most luxurious place I had ever been too was Red Lobster. Now this wasn't because I lacked the intelligence to know these places existed, I grew up and still am dirt poor, so that is just my lot in life. Luckily I found Tokyo Garden, and it gave me a bit of extravagance in an otherwise dull existence. The ambiance is very traditionally hibachi, you are seated around a grill where a very skillful chef cooks your food for you. When you first sit you will have the opportunity to order appetizers or Sushi though you really don't need too because there will be plenty of food. You will get a salad and a soup to get started on while the chef gets ready. Remember, this is a dinner and a show, so you should be watching while they are "performing" in order to no disrespect your chef. They will cut the vegetables in ways you wish you could, and so fast. The chef will build a onion volcano for you as well that is magnificent. The flames jump high so be forewarned it is warm! You will get your rice, noodles and vegetables first followed by your protein choice and one or two shrimps if you're lucky. Then finally it is followed by a small scoop of ice cream to calm everything down. The food tastes fresh and delicious. So along with the amazing show makes this worth the cost. I've found that those who don't enjoy it basically have lived a life where they've never been denied joy(in other words, spoiled). If it's boring to you, then you've had too much in life already and should just go eat at McDonald's and call it a night. If you don't like the atmosphere you should re-evaluate your life and learn how to be more cultured. Believe me, it's worth the change in perspective. Pleasantly surprised to find this new spacious location that easily accommodated us and we were quickly seated and soon enough our order taken and our chef began to entertain us. Another hidden gem, we stumbled across this place because the first hibachi place was out of seating. So we search on Yelp for another hibachi spot. We got there not knowing what to expect and were pleasantly surprised. It has a dark dim vibe ideal for a date night. Which was perfect for us. We did sit with another family but they were super cool and it wasn't that big deal for us, but something to consider if you're not with a big party or uncomfortable with sitting with strangers. Are chef was incredible, he did all your standard volcano fire and the egg tricks but he also did one I only seen on tv. The catch the shrimp in your mouth move was a huge hit for are table. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. When are food got finished it was delicious and the portion size was decent. We had enough to take home. The staff was excellent making sure our drinks were filled the whole time and making sure our plates we weren't using were removed. All in all. I have to start by saying my family and I frequent this restaurant. Tonight was a really bad night. We got seated quickly our drink orders were taken, then our dinner orders. 2 filet and shrimp and 1 scallop and fillet. All with fried rice and veg. Pretty basic. The young hibachi cook started of shaky. The griddle was to hot. His butter burnt before he could get anything into it to cook, noodles were over boiled and scorched on the flat top. Rice was ice cold he cooked it so quickly. My shrimp was still semi raw, my wife's scallops were scorched and over cooked. Steaks were cold in the middle. With in 4 min of the cook being finished or server brought out to go boxes. 5 mins later she brought d'Herbert. We were still eating our food. And felt very rushed. I mentioned the problems to our server. She took our ticket to the manager, there was no conversation or contact with us they just discounted the ticket by 90.00 and let it go. Very disappointed in the management. I did not request a refund or discount. This is how people deal with problems now. Just make it go away. It's on the same list as the rolls so we mistook it as one. It's just a plate of hot oily mess of baked seafood. It tasted okay but definitely not worth the premium price. This is a great surprise of a restaurant. It didn't look so great from the outside but the inside was very nice. I would give this place 5 stars if I could, however, I have never been to the teppanyaki side, only sushi. Their sushi is very fresh. All the appetizers, soups, and other small plate items are delicious. I cannot say enough good things about the tempura veggies- super light and crispy, not greasy or heavy.
