I feel really bad writing this because the staff and the owner seemed really nice but this sushi is so gross if you're a sushi person I think you could tell. I guess this is one of those places where they hide the flavor with a bunch of mayonnaise like a suburban sushi spot. I honestly just wasted $50. I'm trying to help y'all so you don't waste yours. It's fine if you don't know sushi and you want to get like a quick roll, but I wouldn't get the fish raw. I got the salmon and it tasted like nothing like weird. I don't know how something can taste like nothing. The imitation crab was really bad. I also got a shaggy dog roll which I thought would be good because that's good anywhere but they didn't use the temporary shrimp they use some kind of weird tasting boiled shrimp. I don't know. Came here for lunch Thursday afternoon with co-workers. I ordered the pork egg rolls and the Harikari rolls. I enjoyed the egg rolls as they came out hot and fresh and had a nice crisp to it. The meat inside was good but could've had just a tad but more seasoning for me. My Harikari roll was pretty good too. I forgot to ask to leave off the avacado so that was my bad but the their version of spicy mayo (which was pretty darn spicy) took the roll up a notch. read more

If you enjoy Edamame their preparation is the best version in all of Houston. Not overboiled, Just right. Came here right after the tropical storm hit. I was honestly surprised that this place was even open considering, but I'm glad that they were. Came here last minute after deciding I wanted sashimi and they sat us relatively quickly. I've been here before, but it was awhile back since. We ordered quickly since we knew what we wanted and we were straight to the point. I got the Tokyo night roll and salmon sashimi. My sister ordered the miso soup, rainbow roll, and salmon sashimi as well. The salmon sashimi was fatty and tender, just how I like it. Dip it with a bit of Wasabi and soy sauce- and it is pure bliss on your taste buds. The Tokyo night roll was beautifully made and surprisingly spicy! I've had spicy salmon before and they were never truly spicy, but this definitely had a kick. It was a pleasant surprise because I do expect spicy salmon to be, well.. spicy! And it definitely was. It was clearing up my sinuses that's for sure. I really enjoyed it though. It had salmon, spicy salmon, and tuna for the raw fish and avocado. It all came together deliciously and I enjoyed it very much. Probably my go-to roll now for when I come back. Nonetheless, this place did not disappoint and satisfied my sushi craving for sure. I've never had a place charge extra for that, it's not hard to make. The salmon skin roll was good, but the rock n roll was not it, it's just a roll with shrimp tempura, masago, and cucumber. There was no spicy mayo or topping. I've had several rock n roll sushi rolls and none have never been so plain than this restaurant. For 8.95 it wasn't worth it. The waiter was also a little rude. I've been coming to Tokyo Bowl for over a decade now, and much hasn't changed--which I'm totally content with. To summarize, Tokyo Bowl has some crazy bang for buck when it comes to their sushi rolls/maki/speciality rolls. The flavor is quite amazing and needs little to no soy sauce. Not into raw? They've got plenty of cooked options, too (even rolls). Continue for more details: Outside of sushi, their cooked menu seems a little underwhelming, but when you have banging sushi, naturally everything else kinda pales in comparison. Their menu Includes a selection of Bento boxes, tempura, fried rice, yakisoba, and donburi (rice bowls). Nigiri options are quite expensive compared to neighboring restaurants. You're looking at $3/pc on average. If I ever go again, I'll make sure to give my 2-cents on their nigiri and sashimi. Atmosphere and Service: The restaurant has a really cool wall of fame. Most portraits are of celebrities and astronauts that have dined with them--autographed, of course. The place is small and the same goes for their sushi bar. It's got a dark and romantic atmosphere, but the layout and tables are usually crammed pretty tight together to accommodate more customers. Tonight, however, due to COVID, tables seemed properly spaced apart. Service was quick and check-ins with our server were frequent. Water was replenished. Good overall experience. It seems they work more as a team rather than relying solely on one server, so that helps. COVID: Tokyo Bowl was strictly takeout during the early stages of COVID and must have resumed their dine in experience around the beginning of June. I have no news on what their plans are now with the "resurgence." Hand sanitizer is provided. Servers wear masks. Patrons are asked to keep their mask on unless eating. Recommendations: 1.) Chips Loin (Sushi Roll) - I absolutely cannot go without getting this roll. For me, this is the roll that put Tokyo Bowl on the map. Again, serious bang for buck. In comparison to it's more extravagant brothers with colorful toppings, it falls more on the simple side. It's got a great crunchy texture and a nice tang from the spicy, creamy mustard drizzled over the top. The pieces are cut thin and the roll is a bit fragile, so pick it up using chopsticks pointing vertically downward rather than from the side. I recommend little to no soy sauce for this bad boy. 2.) CiCi Roll (Sushi Roll) - Like something a little more raw? Fewer crunchies, more fish. I believe they use a tuna tar tar on top of the roll. 3.) Unagi don / Unaju don - A cooked option. Freshwater eel over a bed of rice. Lots of it. Eel sauce is something like a thick teriyaki sauce. read more

This place is probably one of my go to for just sushi rolls. My absolutely favorite is the chips loin roll. It may not look like much but the flavor and crunch that the roll has is absolutely fantastic! The other rolls are pretty decent too. I also ordered the spicy tar tar to check it out and presentation wise I wasn't impressed, but flavor wise it was great. Definitely a dish you should order if you're trying to eat slow by preparing each wonton chip to the right fish/guac/etc ratio. Overall I'll keep being a long time customer because both the service and rolls are pretty great. The boyfriend and I have been on a sushi craze as of lately and that's the reason why we ended up going way out of our way to try Tokyo Bowl. We were not disappointed! Tokyo Bowl is located on the side of the complex so don't be alarmed if you don't find it immediately. It's been mentioned in almost every review previous to this one, but the parking lot is odd. Not sure why it was designed this way, but that's not the restaurant's fault. Also mentioned many times is the fact that the tables are REALLY close to each other. The restaurant is quite small so I guess they're just trying to make due with the little space available. I can imagine that privacy is very limited when the restaurant is busy, but we didn't have that issue since the place was fairly empty when we arrived. Our waiter was nice and attentive so I have no complaints about the service. Now onto the most important part of this review.. How was the food? Well... It was pretty darn delicious! I would say that the rolls here are a little bit thicker than most sushi restaurants, but I think that's mainly because there's a tad bit more rice on the rolls. Umani Roll (3/5) - Tempura scallop and kani topped with avocado and spicy crab mix. The roll was presented in a fish-shaped dish which made for a cute presentation. I was intrigued when I read tempura scallop since I've never seen a roll like this. It was good, but not really worth ordering again since frying scallops doesn't equate to anything spectacular. It did not help that the roll is on the pricier end compared to others available. Not sure why there was sweet and sour sauce on the plate since it was not listed in the description, but it didn't bother me. Dynamite Scallop (4/5) - Simple (and delicious) roll consisting of just spicy chopped scallop on the inside and masago on the outside. Sakura Roll (4/5) - Shrimp tempura, eel, and avocado topped with teriyaki sauce (subbed for eel sauce) . This roll was my favorite out of the five we ordered. I was able to taste the eel with each bite and that really stood out to me since I've had experiences where the taste of eel gets lost among other flavors. I asked for eel sauce instead of teriyaki sauce, but I don't think they honored my request judging by the transparency and color of the sauce on top. I didn't mind this since overall the roll was very tasty. For $10 I would definitely order this roll again. Rock'n Roll (3/5) - Shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with masago. Pretty standard roll available at every sushi restaurant and tastes the same. Spicy chopped scallop sushi (4/5) - The amount of scallop on these sushi pieces was amazing! I've never seen a restaurant give out so much. The scallop was a little spicier than I'm used to, but it was still delicious! Overall we had a good experience at Tokyo Bowl and we might just have to make another visit sometime in the near future. read more

I really wanted to like Tokyo Bowl but it was just kinda meh. They were understaffed and very busy the evening we came in. Once we finally got a waiter, we ordered the hot mussel appetizer. This was the highlight of our meal. They are made with green mussels and have a ton of cucumber salad on them. The come with 5 to an order but they are so packed with the filling, there was actually enough for 6. They were refreshing and warm at the same time. The warmness came from the spice, it was Enough spice to tingle on your lips but not burn your mouth up. I ordered three rolls all cooked because that's all I can have right now. They were sooo bland and Boring. Plus they just all tasted the same. I guess the alisa was the better of the three. It's like they were just missing some acidity or something. Trent got a bento dinner box and again, bland city. The tempura was so greasy and they did not clean the shrimp before cooking it. Y'all I have EXCITING NEWS! Tokyo Bowl will be reopening in January 2020 (as per their fb) - following an a/c fire on the roof of their building neighbors. That being said I can't wait for them to reopen. It has been a solid year since I've been there and no other sushi place I've tried thus far has lived up to TB standards! The sushi is always fresh and love their specialty rolls. I always get the Houston and the Haru. It is enough for a meal, easily. Sometimes i get the Chirashi which is also huge! The atmosphere is cozy and it's always busy in there, a good sign for any restaurant. I've also ordered take-out a few times and it's always on-time and fresh. If you're going on a Friday or Saturday night, I'd recommend calling ahead to get a reservation, and remember, they're closed on Sundays. read more

In Clearlake, an area not known for it's food, it's always nice to find a refreshing place like Tokyo Bowl. It's the place you go to for good sushi in the suburbs of an area that shouldn't even be considered a part of Houston. Though a little pricey, you can count on this place for providing good tasting reliable sushi. I've certainly never been disappointed. Sometimes the service may seem a little rushed, but everyone there is nice and cordial. Now on to the food. Today I decided to order the caterpillar roll. I get it.
