Top notch dining in Midland…read more Visited earlier this week when we took clients out to dinner. Cowboy Prime was the top choice of a Houston-based colleague familiar with the Permian Basin. He told me they have excellent seafood as well as food you'd expect to find in West Texas. Boy was he spot on! We were seated in the interior dining area at a six person round table, and ordered drinks and appetizers. I shared a glass of wine - the superb Caymus 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - and tuna and beef tartare, which were both delicate morsels of delight! I also had a portion of the giant Italian meatball and then waited for my entrée, savoring my cab. The evening was jolly (the Dallas Cowboys were beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football) and the company interesting. Finally my entrée arrived - a rare Cowboy Prime burger with French brie - and I dug in. This was one of the best burgers I've had in a while - it was filling, juicy and delicious. Soon it was time to leave, and as I walked out with my colleagues to catch an uber back to our hotel, I made a note to myself to come back for more next time I'm in town!

"Butt," they giggle. Lest you forget, "the initials also playfully represent the store's slogan, 'Here Everything's Better'." Cute, huh? This store was mostly clean and organized. We found some good deals on meats. I mean for the times. And I love the H-E-B line. They omit lots of junk and artificial crap plus they are cheaper than the name brands. This mom is a fan! The seafood guy was funny. The cashier was nice but distracted with her phone. The most maddening scene was the parking lot on January 4, 2026.

I'm convinced the food heaters called in sick the day I showed up because everything was cold. The saving grace was the hibachi. It came out fast, actually hot, and reminded me what temperature food is supposed to be. The buffet had a solid selection, so it's not like they were lacking options. It's just hard to appreciate cold fried rice when you're wondering, "youre telling me a cocktail shrimp fried this rice?!" The honey chicken deserves some respect, though. I've never seen honey chicken at a Chinese buffet before, and somehow, even cold, it was still the best thing I ate. Which makes me think if they ever turned on the warmers or added a microwave this place might actually be decent.
