I needed food pretty badly but didn't have a lot of money at that moment. When I found this little joint I was tickled. The prices are really great for Amsterdam & the portions are actually quite okay. I knew it was a winner when I saw the queue of locals. I didn't know what was what but the woman helped me & was very patient & friendly. I had Chinese noodles with some kind of bbqed pork & mixed vegetables for 6.50€ & a sparkling pineapple soda. Total: 10€. Both choices were great... though the soda was a bit sweet, it tasted very nice. I would definitely return to try other things. It makes sense that they have to microwave the food. Food sitting on warmers for hours dries out & not only loses its freshness & flavor, but also looks terrible. So I am assuming it's a cooler, like in a butcher shop, instead. ..hense the foil at night it's actually quit brilliant. They don't need a refrigerator in the back to carry everything to & fro everyday. So in their little space, they can offer many options & the flavors are better. Very efficient! Anyone with food intolerances should beware, however, that they use one set of tongs or one spoon per row. So if you order something from the middle or closest to the glass, it will be served with the same utensil as that closest to the server, etc. Not a big deal for the majority, but definitely not for food allergy or intolerance folks. (Just a tip.)

Stopped here for a quick snack. Asked the lady at the counter for a recommendation because I'm inexperienced with Surinamese food. She wasn't very helpful and her attitude was a bit off-putting. Ordered the steamed pork bun (which looks much like a Chinese da bao) to-go. It was packaged nicely. Taste: Meat was pretty good (pork had a nice flavor) but the amount of filling was too little compared to the amount of bun (especially for 2.50 euros). Bottom Line: Perhaps their entrees are tastier, but would rather try a different Surinamese place instead.

This was the only photo I took here and it was taken because I was fascinated with Caribbean food not being Jamaican or anything, but this.

I was 4 things when I stumbled across this place: * Hungry. * Seeking my vegetables. * Lured in by an attractive girl I saw working there (September 2015). * Fresh off the boat 'or as good as' from London not knowing much about anything.. I was served by the gentlemen and I was confused on what cuisine it was given it read Caribbean everywhere and everything but wasn't what I'd consider "Caribbean". So that was an education for me as I ate my dinner that night. I remember I had a carb' too, of boiled rice, and I had my vegetables, and there was something I ordered that, I didn't care for, so I honestly never finished it, I tried it, ate what I could - It looked really healthy (I'd give it that); and was brown and sticky and crunchy but, not for me. That was the first time in my obviously sheltered life I had ever heard of the Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. It was with a little difficulty getting what I wanted; something to do with having to order something else with it but they either cut me some slack or; it was that thing I tried because I'd never seen before then and decided I didn't care for it?/ IDK, but I remember service policy has much to be desired considering it was a hassle and a favour I think to get what I wanted because it wasn't the right order 'or whatever'. That was something I wasn't used to.

This photo was taken around 10:00 pm. Look closely on the food covered with foils :(

Me and my friends saw this place as we were walking around the area, I was craving for Asian food and with the cheap price it was inviting. But oh boy, it's a mistake! The food taste old and recycled, the rice is dry and old as well. The service was the worse I've experienced in the area. Later that night, we were walking again around the area and I saw the left over food were covered by foils! (And I have a picture to prove it) No wonder.

I tried this place after the two Indonesian restaurants nearby were closed. I ended up with a Wokbox, with noodles, tofu, and vegetables. Everything was tasty and pretty cheap. The noodles were thin and narrow, a bit like a Ramen noodle, and the seasoning was good and slightly spicy. The tofu was marinated and sauteed, and I chose the Asian vegetables. Generally a decent place for a quick bite good for take out.

I had a wokbox with tofu, and since this counts as vegetarian, it came with 2 extra vegetables, for €6,95.

Staff don't bother to find tables for you; they let customers figure things out among themselves. Alright. We eventually grabbed a table after 5-10 minutes, then had our order taken 10 minutes later. The food took a long time to come out: about 40 minutes (other than 1 appy that came out after 20). Good thing it was tasty. We got: -plantain fries (€6) -- tasty, especially with the sweet dipping sauce, but you get about 8 fries, so not great value. -okonomiyaki (€12.90) -- this was wonderful. So many lovely textures, flavours, and seasoned beautifully. This was the highlight of the meal for me. -vegan plate (€18.90) -- really nicely designed plate, with a base of brown rice, with a sort of Japanese slaw, vegan chicken katsu, tempura (apparently, though I didn't notice it), and stir fried veggies. Super tasty stuff. Not the biggest portion, but not bad either. My friends each got the crispy roti wrap (€14.90), which they loved, and the taste I had was great. Overall, great food, not the best dining experience. Perhaps my experience wasn't representative. I'd go back for the okonomiyaki alone.

Jamaicanmecrazy, ja man!…read more Passing by this shop I was like WTF, a Jamaican takeaway. How come I don't know about this place?! Turns out, they only recently opened. Hell yes, A'dam was in desperate need of Jamaican takeaway!!! Sure, you've got Planet Rose. But sometimes you want to eat ya curry goat in tha privacy of ya own home, ya hear! Not sure if I'm such a big fan of the crowd hanging in front of the shop though. Reminded me of high school, but I'm a big girl now and nothing was gonna keep me from trying out Jamaica's national dish ackee & saltfish! They normally serve it with some rice (but I asked for the fried dumplings instead), fried plantains and a few slices of tomato and cucumber. Yeah, Jamaicans don't really seem te eat lot a veggs with their protein. So, if you want your veggs, you need to order a seperate portion of callaloo or okra. Hard food = Jamaican for yam. It's hard, it's food, of course.... hard food. Today for specials, they also had fish tea. For just €3,50, I got a big cup of Jamaica in a bowl!!! Oh my lordy lord, that was some seriously good fish soup! Try the sorrel ginger drink. Fiery and not too sweet! They saran wrap the shit out of your takeaway so none that goodness gets spilled. Rose move over, there're new boyz in town and I hope they're here to stay!!

The restaurant has operated in this area since 1980, helping establish its reputation as one of the city's best-known Surinamese-Chinese establishments. From the outside, the storefront is relatively modest and utilitarian, fitting seamlessly into the dense row of businesses that line the street. Inside, the focus is clearly on the food rather than elaborate décor, with a straightforward dining room with bench-style eating that reflects the restaurant's origins as a neighborhood eatery. At around 7pm on a Thursday night, the restaurant was mostly full, but able to accommodate our walk-in party of three. The menu reflects Amsterdam's unique Surinamese-Chinese culinary tradition, blending Chinese cooking techniques with Surinamese flavors and ingredients. You can choose from a wide variety of noodle dishes, rice plates, roast meats, soups, and Surinamese specialties, resulting in a menu that is significantly broader than that of a typical Chinese restaurant (seriously, the PDF version online is like a book). Large combination plates and takeaway-friendly options feature prominently, making Kam Yin particularly popular for quick, filling meals. The extensive selection provides an excellent introduction to one of Amsterdam's most distinctive food cultures. Both of my friends ordered noodle dishes (€10-16 depending on your choice of protein), which came with a generous portion of expertly-fried noodles that were well-seasoned and not overly greasy, as well as different varieties of succulent sliced meats ranging from roasted pork to tender prawns. I opted for the Roti Lamsvlees (€11,60), which is a hearty lamb curry with a whole hard-boiled egg, vegetables, and flaky, buttery roti for dipping. For only €11,60, this was a huge plate full of flavor, with two gargantuan roti - I could barely finish it! The curry is of a slightly different flavor than a traditional Indian curry, but delicious nonetheless. The lamb was pull-apart tender and not overly gamey, and the hard-boiled egg was an interesting and welcome addition. Pricing remains highly accessible by Amsterdam standards, with most diners able to enjoy a substantial meal for roughly €10-20 per person. Service is fast and friendly, and despite the restaurant being busy, our server encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted. All the food we tried was absolutely delicious with huge portions, and it's such a unique cuisine that you can't find in many other places. A must-try if you're in the area!

It's a busy, "basic" spot on the Warmoesstraat that specializes in Surinamese-Chinese fusion (locally known as "Surinese"). I'm a fan of most Asian cuisines, but I specifically come here for the Surinamese side of the menu. I recently had the Stir-Fried Noodles with Mixed Meats (Moksie Meti). The meats were flavorful, and I particularly liked the sweetness of the Chinese sausage. The dish was a bit plain overall, but for the price and the portion size, it definitely does the job. Food: Good, reliable comfort food. It reminds me a bit of something you'd find in a casual Hong Kong eatery. Service: Very fast and efficient. Don't expect much "small talk" or frills--they are focused on getting the food out hot and keeping the tables moving. Vibe: Crowded and unpretentious. It's a great "bargain" spot for a quick bite before catching a train or heading out for the night. Pro Tip: If you like some heat, try a little of their house sambal (hot sauce) on the side, but be careful--it's got a real kick! Overall, it's a dependable 3 or 4-star spot. It won't be the best meal you ever have in Amsterdam, but it's consistent, cheap, and much better than the surrounding tourist traps.
