You'll be saying no, no, no, no, no
When it's really yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
It seems like roti chowing A'dam has been divided into 2 camps like Destiny's Child during the ugly break up.
Although the herd is claiming the best to be had at Roopram, I've always been reluctant to venture all the way out to Oost to try their roti. Needless to say, I was delighted to hear they opened a franchise at de Van Woustraat, much closer....much better?
So, despite some bizar but persistent rumors about Roopram's secret sauce involving snakes and...buckets of spit imported from Surinam---don't ask, or better yet, ask my cousin, she'll tell you all about it---it didn't take me long to find my way to the new eatery. I went for the mixed roti, which provided me with the opportunity to sample the chicken, lamb and doks (duck) all in 1 go. While the sauce that came with the dusk was really delish, the duck itself was more bones than anything, but I think that's often the case with masala duck. Therefore, I usually go for the masala lamb, which was really a disappointment. Such was the chicken. The meat was stringy and dry and the sauce had failed to penetrate (penetrate, nasty word) the meat.
Okay, I had established the well praised Roopram didn't suffice. So when my mom visited me last spring, I needed to find better roti joint. This lead me to Lalla Rookh.
Now, my mom and I both agreed this was the best roti masala lamb we EVER had!
First of all, the name, like straight out of the Teletubbies. Whereas Roopram sounds more like someone's being violated.
Secondly, Lalla's roti pancake is HUGE, flying saucer huge. I have these special big plates, christened the roti plates, I always use when eating roti and the pancake didn't even fit these plates. So, one pancake is big enough to split between 2 individuals!
Generally I'm quality over quantity, but if you want to serve me a portion of food that will last me for at least 2 days while charging me less than €10, then more power to you!
Next we address to the meat. The lamb was nice and succulent and the sauce was perfect, not too spicy but with a nice hum and a good masala flavor. In addition, the fixing (egg, potatoes and long beans) were all well seasoned.
Also a major bonus, Rookh offers more than just roti. More importantly, they rock some classic Surinamese fair which is harder to come by such as moksi alesie, sopropo and tayerblad. They have a wide variety of soups I'm determined to try. And apparently their telo with teri (fried cassava with fried little fish in a fiery sticky ketjap manis like sauce is suppose to be ot of this world. My mom also tried their bara and said it was better than the ones she had at other places.
I think it's kinda ironic I still have to go all the way over to Oost for the best roti. Granted, I haven't tried the roti at Roopram's location in Oost, I doubt it will taste better than Lalla Rookh's... read more
