Staff don't bother to find tables for you; they let customers figure things out among themselves. Alright. We eventually grabbed a table after 5-10 minutes, then had our order taken 10 minutes later. The food took a long time to come out: about 40 minutes (other than 1 appy that came out after 20). Good thing it was tasty. We got: -plantain fries (€6) -- tasty, especially with the sweet dipping sauce, but you get about 8 fries, so not great value. -okonomiyaki (€12.90) -- this was wonderful. So many lovely textures, flavours, and seasoned beautifully. This was the highlight of the meal for me. -vegan plate (€18.90) -- really nicely designed plate, with a base of brown rice, with a sort of Japanese slaw, vegan chicken katsu, tempura (apparently, though I didn't notice it), and stir fried veggies. Super tasty stuff. Not the biggest portion, but not bad either. My friends each got the crispy roti wrap (€14.90), which they loved, and the taste I had was great. Overall, great food, not the best dining experience. Perhaps my experience wasn't representative. I'd go back for the okonomiyaki alone.

Located on Warmoesstraat, one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam and just a few minutes' walk from…read moreCentraal Station, Kam Yin occupies a historic stretch of the city that has long been associated with Amsterdam's multicultural food scene. The restaurant has operated in this area since 1980, helping establish its reputation as one of the city's best-known Surinamese-Chinese establishments. From the outside, the storefront is relatively modest and utilitarian, fitting seamlessly into the dense row of businesses that line the street. Inside, the focus is clearly on the food rather than elaborate décor, with a straightforward dining room with bench-style eating that reflects the restaurant's origins as a neighborhood eatery. At around 7pm on a Thursday night, the restaurant was mostly full, but able to accommodate our walk-in party of three. The menu reflects Amsterdam's unique Surinamese-Chinese culinary tradition, blending Chinese cooking techniques with Surinamese flavors and ingredients. You can choose from a wide variety of noodle dishes, rice plates, roast meats, soups, and Surinamese specialties, resulting in a menu that is significantly broader than that of a typical Chinese restaurant (seriously, the PDF version online is like a book). Large combination plates and takeaway-friendly options feature prominently, making Kam Yin particularly popular for quick, filling meals. The extensive selection provides an excellent introduction to one of Amsterdam's most distinctive food cultures. Both of my friends ordered noodle dishes (€10-16 depending on your choice of protein), which came with a generous portion of expertly-fried noodles that were well-seasoned and not overly greasy, as well as different varieties of succulent sliced meats ranging from roasted pork to tender prawns. I opted for the Roti Lamsvlees (€11,60), which is a hearty lamb curry with a whole hard-boiled egg, vegetables, and flaky, buttery roti for dipping. For only €11,60, this was a huge plate full of flavor, with two gargantuan roti - I could barely finish it! The curry is of a slightly different flavor than a traditional Indian curry, but delicious nonetheless. The lamb was pull-apart tender and not overly gamey, and the hard-boiled egg was an interesting and welcome addition. Pricing remains highly accessible by Amsterdam standards, with most diners able to enjoy a substantial meal for roughly €10-20 per person. Service is fast and friendly, and despite the restaurant being busy, our server encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted. All the food we tried was absolutely delicious with huge portions, and it's such a unique cuisine that you can't find in many other places. A must-try if you're in the area!

It's a busy, "basic" spot on the Warmoesstraat that specializes in Surinamese-Chinese fusion (locally known as "Surinese"). I'm a fan of most Asian cuisines, but I specifically come here for the Surinamese side of the menu. I recently had the Stir-Fried Noodles with Mixed Meats (Moksie Meti). The meats were flavorful, and I particularly liked the sweetness of the Chinese sausage. The dish was a bit plain overall, but for the price and the portion size, it definitely does the job. Food: Good, reliable comfort food. It reminds me a bit of something you'd find in a casual Hong Kong eatery. Service: Very fast and efficient. Don't expect much "small talk" or frills--they are focused on getting the food out hot and keeping the tables moving. Vibe: Crowded and unpretentious. It's a great "bargain" spot for a quick bite before catching a train or heading out for the night. Pro Tip: If you like some heat, try a little of their house sambal (hot sauce) on the side, but be careful--it's got a real kick! Overall, it's a dependable 3 or 4-star spot. It won't be the best meal you ever have in Amsterdam, but it's consistent, cheap, and much better than the surrounding tourist traps.

The service was slow and the restaurant didn't look very clean. The menu items were inexpensive which my party were happy about, but when we made our selections it took so long for the food to come. I ordered a chicken meal with rice, and the chicken had bones in it that I almost choked on- it didn't say it ok the menu-guess I wasn't expecting it. The rice tasted okay but I was turned off from eating once my sister found a long black hair in her food. Once there's hair in food my stomach turns and I don't eat anymore. When my sister complained about the hair- the staff were staring at her like they didn't understand why she was upset- and were making it seem like she threw the hair in there. We also ordered some bread with our meal which never came and had to be sure it was taken off our check. Overall this experience was terrible and I wished we had gone to the steakhouse around the corner that I wanted to go to- but the people I was with wanted this place.

The staff were nice enough, but I think that slightly raising the prices and quality would serve this location well---the current version doesn't really meet anyone's needs.
