Having never had it before, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many different parts of Asia seemed to influence this cuisine, especially given that Suriname is a South American country! There is satay, nasi goreng, goat curry, etc - stuff inspired from all over Asia but slightly different than you would get in their original countries. I ordered the chicken Longtong which is an Indonesian dish and a specialty of this place. It was OUTSTANDING and really filled me up too. I did not expect that especially given how nice and cheap it was - I had even ordered an extra side of Satay skewers which I then had to share. Service is nice and quick especially since you mostly just interact at the back stand to order, and then sit down. It was a bit crowded inside but the vibe is nice and we were able to get a table without waiting too much. One minor note is that our cards were not accepted here (visa, Mastercard), so make sure you bring cash! They did a good job of communicating this before we ordered so we did not have to waste too much time, and luckily we had just enough cash anyway. Overall, very solid recommendation for Amsterdam! Surinamese food is not to be missed.

Met volle magen en een glimlach keken we elkaar aan. Dit was genieten. Echt goed, lekker en met liefde bereid. We komen hier zeker terug!

Located on Warmoesstraat, one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam and just a few minutes' walk from…read moreCentraal Station, Kam Yin occupies a historic stretch of the city that has long been associated with Amsterdam's multicultural food scene. The restaurant has operated in this area since 1980, helping establish its reputation as one of the city's best-known Surinamese-Chinese establishments. From the outside, the storefront is relatively modest and utilitarian, fitting seamlessly into the dense row of businesses that line the street. Inside, the focus is clearly on the food rather than elaborate décor, with a straightforward dining room with bench-style eating that reflects the restaurant's origins as a neighborhood eatery. At around 7pm on a Thursday night, the restaurant was mostly full, but able to accommodate our walk-in party of three. The menu reflects Amsterdam's unique Surinamese-Chinese culinary tradition, blending Chinese cooking techniques with Surinamese flavors and ingredients. You can choose from a wide variety of noodle dishes, rice plates, roast meats, soups, and Surinamese specialties, resulting in a menu that is significantly broader than that of a typical Chinese restaurant (seriously, the PDF version online is like a book). Large combination plates and takeaway-friendly options feature prominently, making Kam Yin particularly popular for quick, filling meals. The extensive selection provides an excellent introduction to one of Amsterdam's most distinctive food cultures. Both of my friends ordered noodle dishes (€10-16 depending on your choice of protein), which came with a generous portion of expertly-fried noodles that were well-seasoned and not overly greasy, as well as different varieties of succulent sliced meats ranging from roasted pork to tender prawns. I opted for the Roti Lamsvlees (€11,60), which is a hearty lamb curry with a whole hard-boiled egg, vegetables, and flaky, buttery roti for dipping. For only €11,60, this was a huge plate full of flavor, with two gargantuan roti - I could barely finish it! The curry is of a slightly different flavor than a traditional Indian curry, but delicious nonetheless. The lamb was pull-apart tender and not overly gamey, and the hard-boiled egg was an interesting and welcome addition. Pricing remains highly accessible by Amsterdam standards, with most diners able to enjoy a substantial meal for roughly €10-20 per person. Service is fast and friendly, and despite the restaurant being busy, our server encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted. All the food we tried was absolutely delicious with huge portions, and it's such a unique cuisine that you can't find in many other places. A must-try if you're in the area!

It's a busy, "basic" spot on the Warmoesstraat that specializes in Surinamese-Chinese fusion (locally known as "Surinese"). I'm a fan of most Asian cuisines, but I specifically come here for the Surinamese side of the menu. I recently had the Stir-Fried Noodles with Mixed Meats (Moksie Meti). The meats were flavorful, and I particularly liked the sweetness of the Chinese sausage. The dish was a bit plain overall, but for the price and the portion size, it definitely does the job. Food: Good, reliable comfort food. It reminds me a bit of something you'd find in a casual Hong Kong eatery. Service: Very fast and efficient. Don't expect much "small talk" or frills--they are focused on getting the food out hot and keeping the tables moving. Vibe: Crowded and unpretentious. It's a great "bargain" spot for a quick bite before catching a train or heading out for the night. Pro Tip: If you like some heat, try a little of their house sambal (hot sauce) on the side, but be careful--it's got a real kick! Overall, it's a dependable 3 or 4-star spot. It won't be the best meal you ever have in Amsterdam, but it's consistent, cheap, and much better than the surrounding tourist traps.

There was a menu for fresh oysters. They were from 5-6 euros each so I did not order it. ( ordering the seafood platter will includes oysters great deals!) I had a glass of white beer which was served in a matching glass. The chef brought the lobster shooter to start and corn moose with shrimp on the bottom. It was very fancy French style. I had Bouillabaisse it was unbelievable. I tasted lobster bisque and fish pencil clams other seafood were inside. I was getting full already then my main course came which was that gigantic seafood platter. I lost my word!!! It was the best of the far best. Service was wonderful everybody speaks English. They offer a great lunch special where you can get a sandwich which consists of your meat of choice squished between a baguette for as low as €5. I opted for a sandwich plus the Surinamese egg roll which was GIGANTIC and clearly a meal made for itself. Food was decent at beast but you do get a lot of bang for your buck. If you're with friends, you'll likely be able to try more of their options since you wouldn't get full off just one dish. Overall, it's a good spot to grab an easy take-out lunch but I'd opt for a more sit-down homey restaurant if you really want to enjoy this type of cuisine.
