We wanted to try surinamese food. However, by the time we sat down and ordered, everytbing was mostly just Chinese food. We asked in the beginning if they take credit card and they said yes. However, at the time of payment there was a credit card surcharge that is not disclosed anywhere on the menu or in the store or by the waitress. The overall ambiance was okay. I ordered the chicken roti and my friend ordered a fried rice and dawat--a coconut milk drink. The chicken roti was exactly what I needed: full of fluffy curried potatoes, chicken and green beans. Going into Amsterdam, I had heard that Surinamese cuisine is a must-eat, but I really had no idea what it entailed. After checking out a few Surinamese eateries and seeing that they were Chinese-owned, I began to wonder if it's anything like how there are Chinese-run Mexican joints in the US and questioned the authenticity of Surinamese cuisine in Amsterdam. After some light research, I found out that Surinamese food is not a specific type of cuisine, but heavily influenced by the Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, African, and Caribbean cultures. Some food for thought. From the outside, this looks like a fancy, 4-star restaurant, but I can assure you that most of the dishes are priced €10 and under. Slightly pricier than what I'd normally pay for Chinese food, but it was very cheap for Amsterdam dining standards. I had the Nasi with Pork, which is Indonesian fried rice with Chinese bbq pork (char siu). Like most Chinese people, I am easily won over by char siu; the cuts here were tender, flavorful, and fresh. I've never had Nasi before but I wasn't blown away by it or anything; it's basically fried rice cooked in soy sauce that wasn't salty or overpowering. I love pickled veggies but it was a first eating fried rice with those, which is not bad if you like pickle-flavored stuff. I guess the more appropriate name for this would be Chinese-Javanese-style pork fried rice. Service was pretty good (although slow) and it helped that I spoke Chinese with them. The roast duck with rice was excellent, with a sauce over the duck that had slightly different exotic spices that I'm not used to in American Chinatown restaurants that serve roast duck. Kam Yin is a solid 3 stars if you get the right thing, especially because it's probably one of the best values in Amsterdam. The special chicken, which is marinated roast chicken, is definitely worth ordering. It was super juicy and well flavored. Not necessarily something to go out of your way to try, but I'll definitely be coming back to order this for take-away. The roti here is different from what you might imagine, especially if you've only had roti in the States. The roti bread itself is much heavier, and is more like a large pancake than the spiral-shaped fluffy stuff you tear. It's pretty good, though not what I'm used to. We ordered the lamb, which was on the heavy side-- I think I would go with the chicken next time. While there were some Indonesian dishes, the menu is predominantly Chinese, and even though it is very cheap to eat here, the food is a little bit less than okay. It is a place frequented by tourists, myself included. One of the telltale signs was an appetizer we ordered came immediately after the waiter walked away....seriously, less than 30 secs. Com'on??!!! Argh, and then the plate of stir fried noodles with BBQ meats came and all the meat looked a little dry like they've been warming all day; perhaps even overnight. The service in contrast was good, and very attentive. The place is very large and can accommodate anywhere from a couple to a split table of 16 we sat next to. If some of the folks think this is good Chinese/Indonesian food, you need to try other places more. Yes the locale and ambiance will make you scratch your head for a minute. They also serve tons of rice with their meals, so you will not leave hungry. However, the food was not great. For the same price, I've had better Chinese at Full Moon in the Hague (far away, I know, but it has better food, nicer interior, etc.).
