We got the lamb roti, the chicken roti, duck platter and lamb platter. Everything was very good and delicious. After you place your order, you need to line up again to get your food - you basically hand them your ticket and they'll just scoop the food onto a plate for you. It's all premade and ready, so it was really fast. The platter and the roti rolls are the same meat/sauce (they all come from the same container), just delivered differently. My favorite was definitely the lamb roti roll though, it was my preferred way to consume the lamb curry :) I'd recommend everything except maybe the duck, since that had too many bones in it. Hole in the wall place in Amsterdam East, I wandered in here due to the ever present line out the door. When people are willing to line up, there must be tasty food! What resulted was a delicious roti wrap filled with lamb, potatoes and green beans. The lamb was cooked perfectly and with the peper sauce made every bite filling and tasty. Operations are quite slow though, as there is one person taking orders and another person making the food. They only make your order when you show up at the window. It really doesn't get any better than this! Best Roti wrap ever! Although "roti" is literally a West Indian type of flat, mushy, delicious doughy bread with lots of thin layers, around here it's become synonymous with a dish you consume the roti with. Traditional roti, the dish, is essentially a flavorful curry stew with yardlong beans, potatoes and chicken or lamb with roti, the bread, on the side. The meat may or may not contain bones so it's basically, and I know how lazy I sound, a chore to eat i.e. you have to sit down, take your time and use utensils. BUT at this wonderful place, where there's nearly always a long line of hungry people, they have ROTI WRAP! Seriously, this dish was made for me! Superb roti quality bread, boneless chicken or lamb, if you want it spicy they'll add fresh yellow habanero paste and all of that wrapped in the roti (the bread). It is big, thick, juicy, if you want, spicy and absolutely delicious! You are a fool not to go to this place if you're in Amsterdam. Many people love, absolutely love, the lamb but I went for the chicken. Tip: if you're going to pick up your dinner here, try to beat Dutch dinnertime as the line tends to be ridiculous. Yes people, the food's That good. Another Tip: If you really want to get a Caribbean feel with your roti, and if you don't mind soda, go across the street to Albert Heijn and buy some tropical soda called Fernandes. Well, well. It was never open when we pass by. But the first time we found it open the waiting lines were all the way outside the restaurant. Two lines, one for orders after which you wait in the other line to pick up your food. The insider was nothing like a restaurant, only hard table chairs, two people eating out of plastic boxes. There are a few more sitting down while they wait, but most people are standing, like a waiting room in the city hall or hospital. Is it that good that people wait half an hour to get a fast food like plastic box? We are cynical at first. But it really is good! This means Dutch "cuisine" is not only a misnomer but it is an abomination (if I were religious I'd say against God) but more realistically against my palate. Therefore the best thing to happen to Dutch food is: 1. Surinamese food 2. Indonesian food At Roopram Roti you will find an abundance of delicious fare of the Surinamese variety. The place is basic but has tables and great prices. I think I had the most expensive thing on the menu--12 Euros. If you eat in, get one of the plates. The owner is really helpful and the lamb is super delicious. The food is super delicious, flaky soft roti, hot sambal, crisp green beans, soft flavorful potatoes. I could go on forever. It's an easy ride on the # 9 tram, one stop after the Troppenmuseum. The steady stream of locals of all races can tell you this is the real deal and where to go to eat. I went on my last day in Amsterdam but had I gone earlier, I would have gone everyday until I had the duck, the chicken and the lamb and then started all over again. It does only open at 2pm and is not open on Mondays as I found out the hard way. read more

Best roti I've had in Amsterdam, but I got tired of it very quickly. It's really good, just not something I can have constantly. Which is a shame because I miss eating good Caribbean food. Every time I have them, I eat the vegetarian roti rolls. Roti in Brooklyn is maybe 2 or 3 times the size of these, but these are still filling and yummy. If you want something for on the go, these are great. I can't complain because the man at the counter is always friendly to me and I've never had an issue with the food. Ok, I know this place is a cult favorite, but I don't really get it. After being told to come here for 3 years in a row ("You live in Oost and haven't been there?! How dare you?!") I finally came here for takeaway on a Wednesday night, almost intimidated by the shower of praise for the joint. Honestly, the food was OK. I had the chicken roti, and while it was certainly enough food, I felt that the 8 Euro price tag was a little steep for what was essentially a piece of chicken in sauce, flatbread and some potatoes served out of a place with fluorescent lights and plastic plates. I'm not an elitist about my food by any means but if it's low-fi, I expect low-fi prices as well. I don't eat a ton of roti so maybe it is the best in the city, but I don't think I will be returning. read more

I've frequented this location for some time, and ever since being introduced to Surinamese roti I've loved it every time I get it! I always get the roti rol kip (chicken, potatoes, green beans, curry flavor all in a burrito-like wrap), and there is something about the fluffiness of the wraps that is to die for. The ingredients are incredible as well, and it is a unique mix of flavors and foods to find all wrapped up in one. I think of it as a Surinamese burrito :) Prices are cheap, food is amazing as evidenced by the line out the door at dinner time. Highly recommend. read more

This place is hilarious. If you remember the soup nazi from Seinfeld, this is sort of like that for Roti only without the unfriendly mustache guy. I laugh and my stomach cheers every time I get to the place and there is a long line that often stretches out the door. Its not just food, it is a ritual that so many people love. Plus the line moves really fast. I do Roti vegetarian and Im always satisfied. It is dirt cheap and the place is barebones, but they make it with love and I enjoy watching the well-oiled-machine that is the kitchen staff.
