First off the ice cream and food is fine. First time I went with the kids I noticed a mentally ill person pacing outside the store which put me in high alert. Second time I went with the kids the guy started randomly entering the store and sat next to me, got up and started going inside and out over and over. He would try to interact with the customers making us all uncomfortable, especially for the kids. My granddaughter ask to leave because of him. I would have expected that the store employees would have intervened. Construction on the parking structure to the Diamond Neighborhoods Family Health Center meant parking in the surrounding neighborhood and a lucky stop at Tocumbo for a 7yr old foodie who decided to run errands with me! They are a "Mom and Pop" ice cream spot near Market Creek Shopping Plaza with lots of traditional flavors alongside my Latin American favorites like Mamey, Maracuya, y Guanabana! (Oh..that's Mamey, passion fruit and sour sop- as I've heard it called by my Trinidadian friends.) We had a fun conversation with the young woman behind the counter regarding how to explain what Mamey tastes like. The closest I can think of is "tuttie fruity" lol. This place is pretty good especially during the hot summer days. They have homemade ice creams, mangonadas, diabilas, chamangos, sandwiches, candies, etc. They're located in a small strip mall with enough parking space and the line can be long during summer but it goes by pretty quick. I usually just grab ice cream and their chamangos here which are good. They use real fruit in their ice creams And drinks which are super refreshing! Wanted to post an updated menu for here! I've lived down the street from Tocumbo for a while, but the main thing my best friend and I come for is their coconut agua fresca. They only serve it on the weekends though, so we don't get it all the time, which makes it more special! Like most places now, prices for some items I feel are a bit steep, however some items are priced fairly. Just depends on what you're looking for. My boyfriend took me here because he usually gets chamango from here. To me, there style of chamango is different from other places I've had. After walking my dogs today I was in the mood for ice cream. First thing a did was to check out yelp and I found several locations in my neighborhood. "Neveria Tocumbo" offers a 20% off your purchase when you check in with Yelp. "Nice deal" because I wanted some ice cream. So I checked in and proceeded to look down the counter at about 18 different ice cream flavors (yummy). It took me a moment to decide and the clerk was helpful by offering me samples of any of the ice cream. I tried a vanilla bean flavor, coffee flavor, and strawberry shortcake. The vanilla bean and the coffee flavors were good but the strawberry shortcake was delicious. It taste just like strawberry shortcake except it was cold and creamy. The shop was clean and there was plenty of sitting room. The clerk was busy when I first walked in but she stopped her task, washed her hands, greeted me and proceeded to give me great customer service. She was helpful and polite. Definitely not the Same-Ole. My initial obsession is the corn (elote) ice cream. If you've ever tried good atol de elote (the sweetened corn beverage) it's pretty similar in taste & texture, except of course that they turned it into ice cream (and there's no cinnamon, but that might be good too). Michael tried the fresa con queso ice cream, which was more strawberry than cheese, but still good. As the other reviews suggest, they have a lot of non-vanilla choices. I will return to torment myself as to whether I will try new flavors or stick with what I know to be excellent. I also must emphasize that they serve actual food here too, and I had my very first ahogada torta. A Torta ahogada (literally "drowned sandwich") is your basic pork-and-fixins torta submerged in a sauce made primarily of chile de arbol. The girlfriend complained of numbed lips, but my only complaint was the two flimsy napkins. Delectable. (More napkins available upon request.) Furthermore, we came in on Sunday afternoon, and bless their hearts, they had my football game on a lovely screen overhead. Next time I'm going to ask them to scratch my back. Came for the CORN ICE-CREAM. I know, it sounds weird but it's quite delicious. If you've ever had creamed corn I'm sure you could understand how corn could be turned into ice-cream. My friend and I also had the like sherbert and mazapan ice-cream. The lime is refreshing. The mazapan was not how I expected it to taste. I thought it would be more like sweet almond, but it tasted more like a nutter butter. Very rich. Still pretty good though but just not the flavor I was hoping for. The vanilla churro wasn't hot when it came out, but the texture was great. Like Disneyland churro texture. My friend's churro was nicely filled with cream but mine was only filled on the end. Going here made me so happy! It made my day! I found this place when I was looking for paletas, but I was even more excited for the nieves. I lived in Mexico for a few months last summer and I fell in love with nieves there. In Oaxaca, a man would push a cart down the street outside my apartment while playing music and yelling "nieves!". I loved it and I would go get limón nieves for 15 pesos (less than $1 usd). This place brought me back to those good memories. The limón nieve was so good. It's my favorite flavor. The paletas were also very good. However, the nieves have my heart. At first, it seems rather chaotic inside. You have to take a number and then wait for them to call your number. There's also a sign on the back wall with the current number being served. Once they call your number, you can walk up to the counter and place your order. They give it to you and then you wait in line to pay. It's a good system once you understand it. I really liked that I could practice my Spanish without feeling weird about it. Usually, I'm really hesitant to speak Spanish when I'm ordering, but it seemed like the only option here. All of the employees only spoke Spanish to me, which might be challenging if you don't speak any Spanish. For me, it ended up being a plus. I highly recommend this place. I have mix feelings about this place. I came here with my boyfriend. Everything looked yummy. He had 2 scoops of ice cream on a waffle cone. One was bubblegum and the other pistachio. I ordered the Mangoneada and 2 strawberry pops. First of all, all their ice creams did taste fresh and good. The ice cream my boyfriend got were good but I didn't really taste much of a difference from other stores (the fresh made ones). As for the Mangoneada.. two scoops of mango ice cream, deeelish! And definitely tasted fresh. But they had the red powder, liquid and candy (sorry I don't know the names of these). It was an alright mix but I think there was too much red powder and the liquid in it. I had to scoop a lot out to even try to finish the ice cream. Too bad it wasn't enough because later that night when we went out for dinner. I felt really queasy and sick. I could barely look at my food without feeling nausea. When my boyfriend told me he felt the same way, we just knew it was the Mangoneada. Maybe our stomachs weren't tough enough to handle it but it definitely made our stomachs feel awful. I'm sure a lot of people have eaten this thing a bunch of times so I just let it go. We also tried their ice cream pops. You can tell they're fresh and homemade but I thought they were okay.
