Came here because online reviews (on Google) said they could make mocktails. Nothing was on their menu (which annoyingly is only available via QR code but also not available on their website), so I asked the bartender. She told me she could make some of their drinks low ABV, so I let her take the lead. The cost was the exact same, which is always a little annoying, but especially because all she did when I asked her was... not give me a liquor. The drink was the Lion's Mane, which has bourbon, allspice, simple syrup, lime, and Angostura bitters. My wife's Mai Tai drink was strong and she enjoyed it. The music is super loud. There is some standing room right up front, a bunch of booths, and then some counter seats. This place is amazing. A must visit for cocktail and small plate lovers! However, negatives: 1. Door would stick open just enough to let in a cold draft. Gotta fix that to seal off the chill, please. 2. Service was weird. We were ready to order a 2nd round, but our bartender was looking at her phone for a good 5 minutes, and then was talking to the hostess/waitress. We could not get either of their attention for a long time. 3. The cocktail "Under the Tidepools" includes Baijiu, which tastes very strange. Just a heads up unless you are used to sorghum liquor. Positives: a) Chicken wings are deep fried and crispy. Quite excellent. I had the Lemon Pepper, but I'd imagine all flavors are good. b) Tuna tartare was also delicious. c) Highly recommend the "Song of the Sea" cocktail. Will be back to try everything else! read more

RIP Venus, Tipsea is the new kid on the block. Instead of competing against 100000+ brunch spots, Tipsea is going the slinky bar route, appealing more to the post-college crowd. They've hired stellar bartenders that know their mixology. I visited with a few friends on a Friday night and was pleased to see the place lively & revitalized. LEMON DROP: Refreshingly tart & well-balanced. Can hardly taste any vodka (yay). NOTE: With music blaring, the small space can feel a little suffocating at times. Hard to have conversations, but too cramped for a dancefloor. Probably best to get a drink to start the night and leave for a more spacious bar. read more

Made our way slowly all the way from the Greek Theatre to this tiny spot by foot after the Chainsmokers show. It was worth it tho!! Small ish bar but well designed with very cool dimly lit ambience. It took over a breakfast spot that used to be. Found out the owner was the guy checking ID's at the door loll! I think his name is Bobby very cool. This place was packed and we got lucky to get a booth. Invited a couple to join us cos there were no other spots and our booth was spacious. Ended up kicking it all night and had a blast! Berkeley people r very cool and happy we trekked to get to this spot. The drinks were all phenomenal. Tried tge mango daddy and a custom drink "Benny" made for our friend with hibiscus. This is such a great spot in Berkeley. The drinks were great and the food was good too. The bartender was great at answering questions and pairing food and drinks. My colleague loved the wings and the nachos were great. They also have really good onion rings. Great (and very interesting) cocktails and the tikka masala queso (which is served with fries) is one of those "where has this been my whole life" dishes. Tipsea on a late nite stop was the spot. They had late night food, good food too not just some mediocre ocean board & green flash was delish. the jams was hittin'. We had a signature ocean margarita-ish drink. Sam, Felix and Chloe made us ladies feel comfortable and the drinks kept coming on time, which always makes the night better. tipsea has a cute menu and a nautical theme with good cocktails. that being said, after several visits i can say that i feel completely unwelcome. the bartenders always seem irritated and have been extremely unprofessional the handful of times i've visited. nasty vibes. you'll pay $15-17 for a cocktail on their menu, but i suppose that's typical for the area. got a $5 tequila shot on tuesday which was nice. not a whole lot of room for parties larger than 4. they've got some booths and a bar, but it's pretty narrow. the bathroom is at least nice. also, girl. if you're going to hit ur geek bar behind the bar can you at least act like you don't hate me? goddamn. read more

Honestly, this place is completely underrated! I don't ever do Yelp reviews, but I felt inclined because this is a new business and I really think this place is an absolute staple when visiting Berkeley. To my surprise the bartenders are always extremely knowledgeable with their mixology. They provided a plethora of options to drink and even gave me samples! Bartender Jessica stood out to me because she is extremely charismatic and welcoming. Took the time to just get to know us as people on a packed Friday night and somehow managed to still get drinks done for everyone else. Hands down my fav Bartender Shiloh has great underrated drink suggestions. She put me on this drink called "Last word." Never heard of it but it's my fav drink now. And oh, she also has the best style, she dresses super cute and her hair is permanently on fleek...you can't miss her when she's here. Lolol Bartender Felix is one of a kind. She's the life of the party and is the definition of a vibe. I think she's the quarterback of Tipsea. She has a way of connecting with everyone at the bar with her topics of conversation! Tipsea is a wonderful edition to Downtown Berkeley. The ambiance is fantastic, the location is convenient, and the drinks and service are top-notch. My only complaint is that it sometimes doesn't open right at 5 PM as advertised (which can be a hassle if you're making plans to meet up with friends). On one occasion the opening time was delayed to 6:30, and another after 8:00. I've tried a number of drinks, and the Pisco Sour and Mango Daddy are my favorites. I've also gotten the Dark & Stormy and Last Word--both are pretty strong! You can order via a QR code or with the bartender. Unlike some other bars in Downtown Berkeley, you don't have to ask for water or get it yourself. The bartenders are on top of things and bring bottles throughout the night. Because Tipsea is still on the newer side, it doesn't get too crowded, especially earlier in the night. I'd recommend checking it out before it becomes a hot commodity! read more
