After nights of spending between $5 and $8 on glasses of indie label beer at more chic beer halls, you sometimes just want a break - from the prices, from the posturing, and god, from the outfits. You will not find any Belgium Abbey Ales on the list at Tiny Tap, but for the same price, you'll get a gigantic pitcher of Amber Bock, plastic cups, and some of the most exuberant bar atmosphere in Tampa Bay. Just last night, I called up a friend who was there lickety-split. We hung out at the bar with Mike, the bartender, whose infectious energy kept the place upbeat without ruining the at-any-moment-this-place-could-have-a-barfight undertow that keeps everyone coming back. Weird spicy barfood, drunk old ladies, punks shooting pool, South Tampa girls talking trash -- yet you feel like, if the right song came on the jukebox, you'd all be linking arms and singing. I imagine that it would also be a good bar to disappear in, at the end of the bar, or in a corner, but don't be surprised if someone offers a cigarette and asks your story. All the downsides of this bar fit the dive scene: treacherous bathrooms (the guys' is outside and feels like it used to belong in a horror movie), little elbow room, nasty smoke fifty percent of the time...but what were you expecting? 2nd best dive bar in Tampa, right after Elmer's on MacDill. You have to love a cash only bar that makes you get your own pitcher. Pool is only a quarter and a retro jukebox plays the beats. There's one bug TV that I remember and it was tuned to Cartoon Network/adult swim, and I thought "This is my type of bar!" Only bad thing is it's a smokers bar. It's a good bar to watch the Buc's at. It's also a great bar to douche watch at. Watch as typical Hyde Park-ers meander in, and the regulars look pissed. read more

This grimy little place is easily my favorite watering hole in Tampa. In summary: cash only, $7.25 pitchers of bud, $0.25 games of pool, and everyone gets along. I would describe it as "a hole in the wall, no bullshit... or anything else for that matter." If you're in the mood for something else, then don't go inside. Otherwise, it's a great place to stop in, drink, and play pool with some good competition from the regulars. They recently upgraded their TVs to HD and have a nice new monitor and cabinet for their bowling video game, but don't let that fool you, this place is ugly. Overly romanticized, under appreciated. Cash Only. The jukebox is limited, and two pool tables dominate the room. The bathroom is on par with a gas station in BFE, and yet yuppies and hipsters and Sevendust lovers find a way to mingle here like a Texan Hold Em table at Hard Rock. It is not a blissful blend of the polar ends of the social spectrum, but everyone gets along. I recommend it for cheap beers, and a game of pool in SoHo. Tony tap is this hole in the wall bar in the middle of south Tampa that has grown around it. It's a bit hidden and you don't know it's there but it's there. It's a good time to switch it up, they have cheap beer, pool tables and foosball! read more

Well being back in South Tampa is great and revisiting the Tiny Tap after almost 15 years was a treat....We went for a birthday celebration and were not dissappointed...great local bar crowd both friendly and lively. Want to drink and dine in luxury? Mingle among the Elite? Then (world famous) TINY TAP TAVERN is your kind of place. I will NEVER forget being taken here by a fine gentleman I came to visit in Tampa. It was the first time I had seen him in years. He picked me up from the airport and when I mention I'd love to go out for dinner and drinks he immedietly says, "I'm going to take you to the best place in the world- The Tiny Tap." What a way to impress a lady! Upon entering this fine establishment all your senses are stimulated...as I sit here typing this, 1,500 miles away I feel like I can transport myself back there...ahh yes...stepping in the door i am immedietley overcome by the smell of stale cigarette smoke and body odor. As the smoke clears a bit and I walk further in, I am amazed at the beautiful people I am surrounded by. I have never seen so many Nascar logos in one place!. After my three hour flight I want to freshen up. As the bartender points to the bathroom and I walk in the door, I realize I would rather eat dinner off a construction site porta-potty seat than even squat over this toilet. I now realize what it would feel like to be in a truckstop bathroom in the middle of Nebraska. As I come out, making a mental note to bathe in bleach when I get home, my "date" had already ordered for us- "a pitcher of Pabst Blue ribbon- I know you like Bud Light but this is a dollar cheaper." (what a charmer!) Because I would prefer to drink a pitcher of gasoline over a Pabst Blue Ribbon, I order a glass of Wine instead (as I see a nervous look in my date's eye, I assure him "I will pay for it.."). I am a bit concerened as the bartender wipes dust off the bottle (apparently wine isn't the drink of choice here?!?! You don't say!!), but I reassure myself how nice it will be to take a sip of salvation as the bartender hands me my glass....oh wait...plastic cup of wine. PLASTIC CUP?!?! Yes- wine is served in a plastic cup. As I sip, my date asks if he can borrow money to play pool and put on the jukebox. Things just keep getting better. As I drink more and more, the place becomes more and more fun. After awhile, I didn't even mind the random men coming over to me telling me "I a'int never seen a hot girl like you here". In fact, I turned it into my own personal drinking game. I'd take a large gulp of wine for every person I spoke with who had less than six teeth in their mouth. Needless to say, I got REALLY drunk! All in All, The Tiny Tap is not a bad place to go, as long as you aren't into needless luxuries like tableware or toilet paper (which, I should also mention you might want to bring your own if you're one of those really picky people, because towards the end of the night there was none left and I was offered a piece of those brown, industrial strength paper towels). I would recommend Tiny Tap to anyone with a weak nose, strong stomach...and a bottle of antibacterial soap. (But in all seriousness, this is the BEST little dive bar in the world, and I mean that. I'm not updating my review 7 years later. I have come back to Tampa countless times to visit my best friends Elyse and Scott, and we always make a pitstop here--Scott is a regular. Finally got there.....and will repeat visiting this legend that contrasts the glitz, inflated prices and couth of most SoHo bars & restaurants. My wife and I were warmly greeted by barmaid, owner, other patrons, occasional musician and all we found in the dim bar. Instantly included in discussion and fully briefed of the history and character of the institution. Beer and wine only, plenty & cheap, with 16 oz PBRs the drink of choice at $2 a can, with reserves being stocked in anticipation of the Gasparilla Eve expected crowds. The two quarter pool tables had been cleared to accommodate more drinkers, leaving oblong perimeters of worn floor paint to show where the tables had been, possibly since 1951 when the former service station got its first beer license. The place shows its age and has accumulated clutter, including a certificate declaring it a "Dive Bar".....and we debated the criteria. I contend you cannot be a dive bar with WI-FI, craft beers like Cigar City, no jars of pickled eggs or pigs feet, no clunkers or bicycles parked outside, no beer spilled on the floor and no one nodding off. The barkeep and patrons all toasted me with their PBR cheap beer and invited us back later to see spilled beer and lots of rowdy or sleepy drunks----taking great pride in being dive citizens. In any event, I will be back and hope to gain citizenship status. read more

I went on christmas- I couldn't tell whether the tinsel and lights were seasonal or not and the dj sang along to the music he was playing. they seemed to have a really random group of patrons and unpretentious atmosphere, plus they have darts! no liquor, though. read more

Hello my Friends! I used to live in Fl, and now I live back In Milwaukee. I was wondering if ya all could help me find the name of this bar/restaurant I have been to a few times. Not sure if this place is still there or not. Its in the Greater Tampa area.When you pull up to it,there is a old car, a pair of long johns on the close-line. I even think I remember a Goat! The Tiny Tap is a throwback joint where you can sit quietly and have a cold one and read the paper while the pleasant buzz of neighborhood regulars goes on down the bar. It reeks of cigarette smoke, but that's not enough to kill the experience. The vibe is quite friendly. My only quibble (thus 3 stars) is that there are only two tv screens and the management seems to be reluctant to show baseball when a new patron makes the request. At least that was the case when there was a football game on another network. But it is only polite to defer to the preferences of the regulars. Maybe if I achieve that status, I can get to watch baseball sitting at the bar. Then the Tiny Tap will be just about perfect. read more
