Everything tasted very flavorful and fresh, our tostones were made to order and tasted perfect especially with the side sauce. Staying in a hotel nearby so grabbed lunch here since I read that Thursdays were Sancocho days! I've never had sancocho before but had Dominican friends who love it. I ordered it for lunch and got a small side of rice- for $7! I was so surprised at the flavor- I was expecting brothy, thick, and comforting but it was a huge hit of garlic and delicious seasoning! I ate all my rice by using it to scoop up all the broth (which was really more like a sauce!). There were pieces of bone-in chicken, carrots, potatoes, plantain I think, and maybe even sausage. It was very savory and hearty. Most customers ordered from the Dominican dishes in the front - the cashier will show you what they have for lunch that day. We ordered a couple of the food trays for a recent party --- and they were a huge hit! The steak/peppers/onions tray was absolutely amazing. Nice to try a new place in downtown Lowell for lunch. I got a grilled chicken wheat wrap with sauteed red peppers and onions and melted cheese. It was really pretty good and the price was more than fair at $6.00. It looked like they had a handful of hot Spanish dishes that a few people had ordered... seemed like good portions too. Parking can be an issue in downtown Lowell, but you can usually hunt something down if you keep your eyes open. I would say that Time Out is definitely worth trying out for breakfast or lunch. Favorites for the plate include: yellow rice, stewed pork, pinto beans, fried plantains, and stewed ribs. The flan and tres leche are also pretty great. I've only had great service here. read more

Its hard to find a place that is both spanish and american food. I love that they make me feel welcome even if I don't speak spanish and the woman is always kind enough to explain to me what the foods. Their chicken pastelitos are a bit different then I am accustomed to, but the $6.00 plate is a a favorite! Great place for a hearty lunch between classes to keep the brain fueled instead of over priced junk food from the college cafeteria. This is a lovely little family owned Spanish cafe frequented regularly by my classmates at Middlesex. Time Out Cafe is bright, open, clean, relaxed, friendly, and inexpensive. It is a perfect place to grab a bite to eat or get something for take away. The people who work there speak English and Spanish, so don't be intimidated if you only hear people speaking Spanish. The family that owns/runs the place is super friendly. The back counter has a steam table with a wide variety of Spanish foods (rice, beans, all sorts of meat dishes, plantain, etc.); but their menu has many non-Spanish options as well. There are menu boards on the walls, but I find it much easier to order from the menu situated on the far left hand side of the counter. I am a WASP vegetarian and was a bit worried that there wouldn't me much for me there....I'm not a huge fan of Spanish food. I was very happy to find that they make eggs/omelets all day...and brownies that are worth their calorie/fat content. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the owners seem really lovely. *I am always a bit reluctant to try new places in the city by myself, so I joined my friends for lunch there last month. I am so happy that I did! I would have been confused/put off by the setup without having someone there to explain it to me: You order and pay at the back counter and the food is brought to you at your table. There are rubbish bins/busing stations located at both the front entrance and back right hand corner, so you have a place to put your tray and such when you are done. I purchased a plate for $6 where I picked two choices (Spanish rice and chicken) plus a free side of salad or plantain. It was reasonably priced, flavorful, and fresh. Aside from American/Latino lunch and dinner options, they also sell drinks like hot chocolate, tea, and snacks amongst other things. The layout is also modern and clean. My only minor complaint was that I smelled like the food being prepared after leaving but equatorial cuisine tends to be aromatic so I didn't mind too much. I was very excited to try this cafe given it's Caribbean cuisine. Unfortunately I was very disappointed when I tried the food. The lady who served me was very nice, not nice enough to make up for what I ate. I ordered yellow rice and chicken. I went there for breakfast and was not disappointed. I was sick of eating at places like Dunkin' Donuts so I decided to give this place a try and support local business. I feel bad when I see that these restaurants are empty, especially after one of my favorite places Bad Dawgs had to close. The food there was cheap, I got pancakes and eggs for $3.25 I think. The pancakes were decent and the eggs were really good since they were real and not eggbeaters. I think you can get one pancake for a dollar which is pretty much the cheapest thing you can eat for breakfast. I haven't tried the paninis but I might go back since my experience was pretty good. read more

Very kind and friendly staff. They opened in March of this year, replacing "Hot Dawgs". Do yourself a favor and visit this establishment to keep them running! My experience this morning at Timeout Cafe and Eatery highlights the tension that sometimes exists in gentrifying cities like Lowell. I saw this place driving by and was drawn by the sign on the sidewalk saying "breakfast, hot coffee, omelettes and pancakes". A friend of mine told me they make mofongo and I haven't had mofongo since my trip to Puerto Rico. So, on my lunch break, I decided to order shrimp mofongo. They make it with shrimp or pork. I chose shrimp bc sometimes pork can be over cooked. Anyway, it def wasn't comparable to the one I had in Puerto Rico. The mofongo itself was a bit chunky, which I liked, but the shrimp I got were little shrimps, the ones that taste fake. For $14, I expected to get maybe 5-6 large shrimps which I would've preferred, but rather I got a bunch of small shrimps with onions and peppers. I was disappointed. I came here during the dinner break of a huge Science Conference for high school students. The place was packed with kids from the conference, with every table taken and a line to the door. The line took forever and the food took a long time to make. However, it was well worth the wait. I got an eggplant Parmesan panini and a papaya smoothie. They were both delicious. You can get a Spanish-style lunch plate with your choice of various beans and meats and rice (the pork is insanely delicious!) for $6.00, or you can order paninis and sandwiches. They make a great Cuban (the "Havana") and Eggplant. But here's icing-on-the-cake: they have drinks you don't find everywhere. How about a classic Dominican Morir Sañando? Orange juice + milk + sugar + ice. Delicious! Or a smoothie made with Guanabana? Time Out is an absolute treasure. If you're in a hurry and only get 30 minutes for lunch, this may not be your place unless you get the Spanish lunch plate.
