I love Indian food and I love brunch but the combination of the two didn't seem to quite work here. Yelp highlighted the Tikka Masala fried chicken and waffles as a popular item so we ended up ordering this along with the home skillet. The Tikka Masala fried chicken is just fried chicken with a belgium waffle with curry sauce on the side. I don't think there's enough curry sauce for the fried chicken. The flavors of the chicken was bland and the waffle was on the soggy side. The home skillet was also bland. The scrambled egg had some spice powder sprinkled on top but that didn't add too much and the Indian spiced bacon was super oily. Service was pretty much non existent after you ordered. I guess the plus side was being able to make reservations for brunch although it really wasn't necessary on a Sunday at 10:30. read more

I had only been to Tigerlily once before and it was a random weekend afternoon for drinks. I remember thinking that the drinks were quite good. It has taken me two years to come back and I realized that I have waited too long. This time, I met up with two girls for dinner, and we shared everything we ordered. We could not pass up the cilantro garlic naan with accompanying sauces. "From the ground," we loved the flavors of the Citrus Soy Glaze Brussels Sprouts. A lot of restaurants have good brussels sprouts but these were excellent. From the land section of the menu, we shared Tikka Masala Fried Chicken and 63 Degree Egg and Dhal Kofta. That chicken was fried very well but it was basically regular fried chicken and the sauce is what made it "tikka masala." The egg was soft and smooth and the dhal kofta had a great flavor. Came here for brunch. This place was a little bit of a miss for me. Some of the food was great, some of the food was not great. The biggest miss out of all of this was the service. Favorite dish: Chicken & Waffles. I will note that this is NOT exactly as advertised, as it's really a waffle and a piece of friend chicken on the same plate (not entirely sure it's tied together well) buuuuut the waffle and the fried chicken were delicious and I really liked the seasoning / spices they used which gave it a very unique flare. Dishes that were meh: Smoked salmon plate - This was fine, but it wasn't worth the price. Chai drink - Tasted fine but was mostly crushed ice. Dishes that were bad: Shrimp & Grits - This was supposed to have a "63 degree egg" in it, and it came on the dish hardboiled. It was gross, and I just don't know why you'd emphasize the egg in this dish when you don't do it correctly. Service: I found the service to be extremely inattentive and I came away feeling like they just didn't care at all. Usually, this doesn't bother me, but for the price-point of the food + the food not really always "speaking for itself" in terms of quality, service does matter for this restaurant, and it's just not there. Overall wouldn't return. Biggest perk is that they take reservations for brunch (which is a rarity when it comes to brunch spots). read more

Came here for a birthday dinner with friends one night. it was a very long long experience for sure. but the food was good. since everyone was raving about their tikka masala fried chicken thing, of course i had to get it and see for myself it really lived up to the hype. and well? it sure did! the tikka masala sauce was bomb.. (okay i'm pretty sure chicken tikka masala itself is an american wash indian food lolol ((like orange chicken for chinese food)) but who cares). the fried chicken was crisp on the outside and not dry on the inside. perfect pairing for an awesome fried chicken! my friend got the fried pompano fish with the coconut rice. that was really yummy too! they give you a whole fish lol. but it's not that huge. but it's also not small. service was really slow. it took forever to put in our orders for even just the drinks. and also since it was a birthday dinner, we brought a birthday cake to be cut and eaten for desserts. had i known they would charge an extra fee of $10 for that, i probably wouldn't have picked this place. and they also didn't disclose this information to us in the beginning nor did they tell us at the end when we asked for the check. Luckily, I investigated that receipt for the details and found that secretive charge. but, he was nice and took it off when I expressed that this charge really should have been disclosed to us in the beginning. haven't been here for brunch, so i can't really review that! all in all, solid place for dinner. location just a little too far up north so would only probably come back for special occasions. read more

Came here for dinner the other night and I just really wasn't impressed for various reasons (I had high hopes given the numerous good reviews and nice looking website). Seems like a family run place so I feel kinda bad but at the same time, there's room for improvement (imo) so.... 1. Restaurant itself was not comfortable -Although we sat inside, it was very cold because the front sliding glass doors were wide open (which is all good for additional airflow given covid, etc but just an FYI in case you're thinking you'll be sitting warmer indoors). -It was also incredibly loud/noisy (an unfortunate combination of bad acoustics, a small space and loud groups of people) -The table was a bit too low for the benches so it can be a bit awkward/uncomfortable for those sitting against the wall -My table was sticky and there was a cup stain. Seems they didn't do a very good job wiping it down 2. Food is overpriced -The food itself is not bad but does not at all merit the high prices. I'm willing to pay if the food is something special but for example, we ordered the Tandoori Prawns (see photo attached) and it was really nothing special at all, especially not for the price of $27. Just 6 pieces of small prawns on a bed of rice & veggies....I would've maybe paid $15 for this max. We also got the Tikka Masala Fried chicken, which was good but basically fried chicken with an Indian twist; not sure if it merited $25. I'd heard a lot about this place and finally planned a dinner here to celebrate a special birthday. I was surprised to see the menu had become more traditional Indian but reviews indicated a twist, so was excited for it. On arrival, I was surprised to see how casual the vibe was, more like a bar or diner, than fine dining. Small space, simple furnishings, no tablecloths, paper napkins. We got seated at a table in the back, near the restrooms and rear exit, which wasn't exciting. Still, we soldiered on and ordered some of their famed cocktails. It was a hit or miss: we liked the Foxtrot Tango and Michael's Pollen, bit Tigerlily, Fade to Black and Cucumber Cup#2 were average (too sweet, low alcohol). For starters, we got the brussell sprouts (good), sesame flatbread (decent, but fried) and hummus / babaganoush / red-beet naan (so-so, naan was mushy). We then got the Tikka Masala Fried Chicken (surprisingly good chicken, average sides), sesame lamb chops (good but not spectacular), tandoori fish (good) and mango chicken curry (very average, no mango flavor, tough chicken pieces). For desserts, we got the kulfi (excellent), Oreo naan (surprisingly good) and rasmalai (avoidable, tough with little flavor). All in all, food was a bit above average, with a few unusual twists, drinks were not as good as expected from reviews, desserts were quite good, service was friendly, but what disappointed was the overall casual vibe of the place. This is a must try restaurant. I came here recently with 2 friends based on a TikTok recommendation (I know right?!) and I was not let down. The ambiance is very elegant and unique. I would describe the cuisine as Indian/ Mexican. I say this because including my self and 2 other friends we ordered tacos, nachos, and a butter chicken bowl. Like where do you see these options on the same menu, genius! L I was able to try all the dishes and everything was perfect. The shrimp tacos were my fav, grilled perfectly! And the butter chicken was full of amazing flavors. My favorite thing on their menus are their appetizers, as they had so many variety. I'm definitely coming back to explore more of them! Visited Tigerlily for the first time last week & it was delicious! First off, parking in the area could be tricky as it's all street parking but were very lucky to find a spot just around the corner. For a Sunday evening, the restaurant wasn't too busy so we were able to get seated right away. My husband and I shared the fried chicken masala & brussel sprouts. The fried chicken was delicious! It came with the masala sauce on the side and was placed on top of mashed potatoes. It was just enough food for the two of us but I wouldn't mind having a plate for myself..hehe The brussel sprouts were amazing! They are tossed in this baslamic sauce along with apples. The apples add a good sweet crunch to it. Never thought of adding apples to my brussels but I may have to try doing that at home myself! This was the perfect brunch spot on a Saturday at 10am. We were surprised that it wasn't crowded at all for a weekend...no need for that reservation afterall. I wanted to steal more off her plate, but my chicken and waffles was the bomb.com. So here's the deal...this is only the 2nd time in my life to eat chicken and waffles. First time was at a semi upscale place in San Diego and I just didn't get it at all. Vowed I would never order it again, but after reading the fantastic reviews here I knew I needed to try it. Yes, I suppose it's atypical with that tikka masala sauce which I would buy by the jug if they sold it! In fact, it appears they give you a good portion of the sauce on the side but I wanted more! The chicken is fried to perfection and the waffles are light as air. Not sure how they do that. So while you would think this is a heavy dish, somehow they make it savory and sweet with a perfect balance between the two. Although it did fill me up for the next 7 hours! Another in our party got the breakfast pizza but this didn't have enough zing for me. Actually I dipped the morsel of pizza in the tikka masala sauce...no wonder I ran out so quickly! Beautiful venue, small space, but perfect for your family (only if they're a bit adventurous). The servers are very nice and the presentation of the dishes were super Instagram worthy. I ordered the tikka masala fried chicken and waffles, and I loved the tikka masala sauce it came with. Honestly, it is expensive and not super worth the price, but the overall experience was pretty enchanting. The chicken was good, but not a lot of meat under a bunch of crunch. The waffle and syrup were standard. I'd say the sauce was the best. The slaw was eh. I also got to try my friends shrimp and grits, mostly because she couldn't finish it. I understand why, it's kind of rich and I wouldn't be able to finish it all. Came here for the first time tonight for dinner. Had seen all their delicious offerings for brunch, so I wasn't so sure if it was the same for dinner. Let me just tell you that it did not disappoint. I've been eating Indian food for 20 years-from your authentic hole in the wall to your upscale Indian establishments, and let me just tell you...by far this is the best naan that I've ever had. It's pillowy soft and with an amazing gooey stretch. I'd come back here just for that. The rest of the food was also delicious. Very elegant India restaurant with full bar. From the name you can't tell of course.. but it's a nice little restaurant with a great atmosphere. Located right by Chez Panisse and across from Safeway, Tigerlily did not fail to impress. We came with a large party and made reservations beforehand. A credit card was required and a $10 per person cancellation fee was enforced if you canceled within 24 hours. They have a wide selection of specialty cocktails, some I've never seen before. I ordered some pear cocktail which was very tasty and the Tikka Masala fried Chicken. The chicken was moist and the bread was very flavorful. I've come here 4 times now, and every time I do I thoroughly enjoy the food. It's a fun place to order a bunch of dishes and share with the table so everyone gets to try a sample of each dish. The buttermilk chicken and the chole samosa I think are always the crowd favorites. They also have an exquisite squid ink mezcal cocktail. Highly recommend! Goes down smooth. I've also gotten food for pickup and they did a great job of getting everything packaged up and made on time. The food was just as good as eating it freshly made at the restaurant by the time we got home. My only qualm with this place can be the slow service. Might be best to come here if you aren't in a rush or trying to get in and get out quickly. Overall this is one of my favorite spots to eat at with groups of friends, or if I'm feeling like eating some Indian fusion dishes. Very solid menu and drink options! read more

I made a reservation for a party of 8 for Saturday brunch around 1pm through their website, which utilized OpenTable's reservation system. Very easy. When our party arrived, however, they totally did not know what reservation we were talking about - huh? In any case, the restaurant wasn't packed and they were able to arrange tables for us right away, so we didn't have to wait. They should probably get their reservation system checked for future reference, though. The place itself is super cozy, intimate, and charming. They have two shared restroom stalls with the restaurant next door. I believe their menu changes every couple of months because I wanted to try the squid ink naan that I had seen on a previous menu, but it was not there when I went. No worries. Onto what we tried: - Tikka masala fried chicken and waffles: scrumptious! The fried chicken was cooked perfectly - juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside. I'm a huge lover of tikka masala, and this complemented the chicken well. The waffles were tasty as well and came with a side of syrup. - Dhal kofta with 63C egg: As a lover of soft-boiled eggs, I was fully expecting a runny egg, which we did not get. This was just a minor disappointment, however. Everything else was yummy! The kofta was flavorful, rich, and crisp. The kale added excellent texture and flavor to the dish as well. - Tandoori shrimp and grits: This dish did not wow me, but it wasn't bad whatsoever. It was just very heavy along with the other dishes but still had good flavor. I used the tikka masala sauce from the fried chicken dish to help balance out the density of the grits and make it go down smoother. - Pulled pork Benedict with curry hollandaise sauce: I only tried a bite of this, but it was tasty. The curry was a unique spin on the hollandaise. However, the non-runny poached egg again added some disappointment to the expected *egg porn*. - Sergeant Pepper: Chili vodka, herbal bitters, condensed milk, oolong tea syrup, and lime. The ingredients sounded too intriguing to NOT try it (despite my fighting a cold - that won't stop MOI!) However, it was just alright. It was super tart but had a spicy finish to it. Tigerlily is fusion, taken to a whole new level! Pretty much New American + Indian food in a casual YET bougie way. The restaurant is located in the gourmet ghetto foodie area of Berkeley, which is lively and taunting with so many yummy scents of food. Yet even with so many food options, Tigerlily def. stood out with a cool industrial vibe inside, AND since it was HAPPY HOUR (and the drinks looked super tasty) - my party/I were easily persuaded to try this joint out for an early dinner. Let's dig in: (1) Sesame Avocado Fry Bread - thick and oh so crispy, this was an avocado toast WELL worth it! So much different flavors jam packed in, but they all worked together so damn well! The avocado was rich and creamy in taste, while the turmeric and spices brought a nice kick. (2) Fried Brussel Sprouts - soo fatttt and buttery, but so damn good. Texture was amazing, super fried with a tasty charred crisp exterior. Soy glaze brought a nice flavor, while the bacon just makes all things right in so many ways. (3) Regular Naan - tasty, light, and beautifully fluffy in texture, yet still sturdy enough to hold a nice chunk of that thick yummy yogurt. (4) Pork Belly + Naan Negro - that SQUID INK NAAN SON! Freakn wow! The pork belly was just OK for me, the flavors were a little conflicting and texture a little tough overall.The little croquette type thing that came with it was tasty, BUT that squid ink naan was simply amazing! There was a unique taste to it, it was like the light essence of seafood put into a fluffy bread...mMMmmmmMm...just get the squid ink naan as a side order alone is enough! (5) Tuna Tartare Wraps - was just OK for us. Tuna tartare is def. not Indian so we prob. should have known better, but the New American in me thought it'd be good. By all means it wasn't horrible - it just wasn't amazing. Tuna was tasty and tender, just smothered in a bunch of sesame oil/soy sauce that made it salty and a pretty standard american version of this dish. (6) Garlic Naan - much better than the regular naan! The garlic flavor was def. visible and beautifully glistening...and if that doesn't get you, the strong garlic aroma will! This beauty came with a little side of curry for perfect tasty dipping bites of heaven. (7) Tikka Masala Fried Chicken - BOMMMMBBBB! The fried chicken was perfecttttt, super tender and juicy on the inside + crispy AF exterior! Comes with a tasty creamy side of their tikka masala which you can pour over or dip. I recommend to dip first and see what kind of ratio you like before you commit and pour it all over. The chicken and sauce was a beautiful marriage, but the mash potatoes was def. weird with the sauce to be honest. (8) 63 Degree Egg + Dhal Kofta - unique, heavy, and had me really contemplating if the flavors in my mouth made sense. So many flavors in one bite, which to me overall was tasty and memorable. I'd say it's a great dish to share so everyone gets a few bites in, but prob. wouldn't order all on my own - def. a taste that can get tiring if had too much of. Tipsy necessities: (1) Jalisco Maid - refreshing and oh so tasty. Can't remember what the liquor was in here, but like a usual cucumber based drink done right - it was fresh and def. too easy to take down! (2) Cucumber Lemonade - reallllyyy light, tasty but a little more watery and less lemonade-y than I wanted it to be. (3) The Clone War - unique and so damn tasty! Not even a hardcore gin gal, but this drink def. made me want to be. The chamomile infused gin is combined with grapefruit + lime + sea salt for a refreshing tart and tasty drink. This place is honestly just so unique, that alone earned itself a whole star. I do feel, it is an acquired taste when it comes to fusion, although it can be done right - some people will either really like it or just wonder what the hell is going on in their mouth. Returned to Tigerlily for brunch after only coming for dinner! Did it live up to my previous 5-star experience? To that I give a resounding yaaaaas. EATS Tandoori Shrimp and Grits - Never had grits like this before! Very tasty with unique flavors. A generous serving (lots of shrimpos, yum). Tikka Masala Chicken & Waffles - BOMB. The chicken is cooked to perfection and brings in Tigerlily's unique flavor & spice. The WAFFLES... ugh. DAMN. Crispy/crunchy deliciousness. This is all coming from someone who has a weird thing about mixing sweet & savory foods (judge me xoxo), but the chicken & waffles here are absolutely perfect together. DRINKS Got the punch bowl meant for 3-4 people for 2 people (lol). But honestly had no problem drinking it all bc there was so much ICE! Might pass on this next time. VIBE/DECOR Again, very nice inside during the day and they also have outdoor seating for those sunny Berkeley days. SERVICE Super friendly! I called ahead of time to see if they were full and they were booked, but mentioned the bar had seats. When we stopped in, the hostess checked the reservations and was able to hook us up with a nice table someone hadn't claimed. My girlfriend found this place through a friend and we went with a larger party of 8 to get some lunch. Luckily they allow reservations at this place and we were able to put our name down. It's located right on Shattuck so it would be good to go early to find adequate parking. When you enter there is a bar located right in front with a very industrial feel. Many of the lights are decoratively connected to water pipes and the restaurant is not too small. They also have a small amount of seating outside along the rails where you can eat. We went at around 1 PM and luckily the restaurant was not packed and was very quaint. We started off with drinks and I got a Michael's Pollen which was very good to my preference as I enjoy a good whiskey drink. It finishes off nicely with a ginger beer taste. For the food we actually ordered some different things so the whole table could share and try. My main focus was on the tikka masala chicken and waffles, but we also got the shrimp and grits as well as the Dal Kofta. Overall the chicken and waffles was amazing to me. Waffles were very crisp and had good texture and the chicken was fried well with a tender inside. You get your syrup and tikka masala on the side to pour on whatever your preference. The shrimp and grits was also very well put together and the salsa gives it some additional flavor. However I would have liked a little bit more flavor on the grits if possible. Even though alone it was still very good I found myself pouring some tikka masala on it just for a bit more kick. For the eggs on the Dal Kofta it was not as runny as we thought it would be but that might just be how they cook it. The food here is great and I liked the look of the bar area.
