The job was projected to take 2 days, but they finished in 1, promptly starting at 7:30 am and not leaving until 7 that night. Crews kept moving in and out all day to do different parts of the job. I am in the process of talking to a lawyer. Stay away from this guy. Look at the pictures I posted after I sent samples to the manufacturer they told me that it was high nailed that means it was nailed in the wrong place and that it isn't there fault and there is nothing they will do. Again stay away this guy gave me a 10 year warranty on labor and it's only been 3 years and now after paying him thousands of dollars I have a roof that is falling apart I hope that no one uses this company he sold me a bill of goods that's worthless. Working with Blue Nail was an exhausting, disappointing, and infuriating experience. Blue Nail…read morelacked professionalism, accountability, and transparency throughout. They made multiple attempts to mislead us and only followed through when faced with the possibility of legal action. Save yourself the time, money, and stress. Avoid Blue Nail at all costs. Blue Nail came recommended, so we reached out for an estimate. Early on, my father felt their team was defensive and difficult to communicate with. I didn't initially see that, so we moved forward. Our home is a Victorian farmhouse with a steep roof and a flat section where a widow's walk once existed. We wanted to restore it and initially asked them to hold off on installing EPDM in that area so we could add the posts ourselves. They declined and instead issued a change order to include the posts in their scope, which we accepted due to time constraints. After signing, we began asking about their installation method, expecting the posts to be properly framed for safety and durability. Once we started asking detailed technical questions, their demeanor noticeably shifted. Shortly thereafter, Blue Nail informed us that they intended to withdraw from the contract, citing permitting and zoning variance concerns. This was a significant red flag. It is the responsibility of any reputable contractor to verify all necessary permits and zoning requirements prior to issuing a formal proposal. We believe they had done this research but were attempting to use technical jargon to intimidate us into backing down. We investigated the variance claims ourselves and found them to be inapplicable. We confirmed with the local building department that a permit could be pulled, which we were more than willing to do. Despite all of this, Blue Nail still tried to walk away from the contract without valid justification. We were prepared for legal action after months of delays and an attempted breach of contract. Although Blue Nail eventually agreed to proceed, work didn't start until September, 4 months after our deposit. Issues: Recurring Leaks: Blue Nail had to return three times to address water intrusion in the same area--raising real concerns about long-term structural damage. As roofing contractors, your main job is to create an impervious barrier between the structure of the house and the elements. This shouldn't be an issue, let alone a recurring issue. Improper EPDM Installation: The membrane over our newly renovated bathroom was not secured to the plywood substrate. My father saw it lifting in the wind, leaving raw plywood exposed to the elements. This is an inexcusable oversight that could lead to serious water damage. We completely gut renovated this bathroom and included many layers of insulation, therefore it is hard to know if there was any immediate damage without opening up the brand new gypsum ceiling. Exterior Staircase: The debris removal process caused deep gouges and scrapes--well beyond surface damage--on our back staircase. A third-floor interior ceiling was also damaged during post installation. Cosmetic Fixes: They repainted the stairs but left a large paint stain on our concrete pad. Minor damage, but emblematic of a careless approach. Dumpster placement: the dumpster was placed on an angle in the middle of the driveway, blocking our cars in the garage making us unable to drive to work. Change Order for Soffits: They discovered extensive rot during the roof removal. We agreed to pay for repairs, but the price seemed unreasonably high. We suspect the quote was inflated due to the contentious nature of our prior interactions.

I called Novalis to replace the EPDM on the roof of a house we were planning to buy. Things started…read morewell with the owner Jonathan being very helpful during our home buying process and providing an estimate for the work needed, which we used to negotiate a credit from the seller. Once the deal went through, we heard from multiple people that Novalis was the best, so despite their higher price we decided to go with them. We had a beam with some deflection and an old ceiling/roof made of 4" wood wool. The span between the beams was larger than normal since the house was built in the 50s. Jonathan did not see this as an issue. On the day his team was ready to start, Jonathan's father, John (who used to own the company) also showed up to supervise the project. He was uncomfortable starting the project after seeing the deflection in the beam and the span between them. He spoke with his son Jonathan who continued to say it was fine. John pulled me aside and told me I should pause the project until I had a structural engineer come out. I'm really thankful for John's honesty. After taking his advice, the plans for the project changed to include ripping off the entire roof, replacing the sagging beam, adding tongue-and-groove planks for decking, two layers of polyiso insulation, and a new layer of EPDM. John continued to supervise the project and was great to work with. He answered all of my questions and was patient in talking me through the process. The job was done quickly, and the end result looked great. Coming out of winter and into the rainy season, I cleared debris from the drains. Not long after, I heard water pouring off the corner of the roof and hitting the metal downspout. I went up to clear the debris again. This became a frequent routine, as I kept hearing water come over the roof corner. I called Jonathan to come out to discuss the drain, as well as a large wrinkle near the front of the roof that had apparently been there but was now more noticeable after debris had been continuously sitting without proper drainage. I showed him pictures of other flat roof drains being set lower into the roof to allow more water to drain and prevent them from getting clogged so quickly. Jonathan did not see a problem and said any fix to the drain would involve cutting into the membrane, which I should carefully consider. We discussed other alternatives and he said he would get back to me after discussing them with his team. A month went by without Jonathan reaching out. I called Novalis to speak with him and left a message with the front desk. A week went by without a return call. I then contacted the EPDM manufacturer, Johns Manville, and one of their specialists pointed me to a PDF showing a proper drain installation on a low-slope roof. The diagram showed, and the specialist confirmed, that the drain should have been set lower into the roof. I called Novalis two more times to discuss this and what a reasonable solution would be but they never returned my calls. I spoke with two other roofers and showed them pictures to get their opinion on how serious the issue was. They both agreed that the drain was not installed properly but also said that fixing it by cutting into the EPDM could potentially cause more problems. It's a shame that things ended this way since Novalis had my trust and confidence in the beginning. I had a lot of respect for Jonathan's father and even though he was supervising the project, mistakes happen. How you handle those mistakes really says a lot about your character. Jonathan and I could have worked this out. If he had simply stood by his work and offered an extended warranty, it would have gone a long way. Even now with our ten-year warranty, I have no idea if he would honor it. It's clear that whatever reputation Novalis had was built by his father, John.

Before starting the job, they conducted a detailed evaluation of the roof and did the same once the work was complete, to make sure everything was done right from start to finish. They also brought in a licensed electrician to properly disconnect and reinstall my solar panels, and thoroughly tested them afterward to confirm everything was working correctly. In addition to the roof, they rebuilt my chimney and installed beautiful new 6" gutters -- the whole property looks fantastic. What really stood out was how flexible and fair they were during negotiations. We worked together to agree on a contract that worked for both of us, including a 50-year extended material warranty and a 25-year workmanship warranty. A1 Gutter and Roofing in Garfield, NJ is no exception. So too have we heard and, perhaps, experienced some dishonesty among this lot. So it is significant when one discovers a contractor who is legit, trustworthy, and highly professional. Having to replace an entire roof including structural repairs of its wooden beams, new insulation, and re-bricking of the upper portion of the chimney was a major undertaking. The entire project took two weeks. It's impossible to describe just how well this job was accomplished. Picture may do it some justice. Overall, this customer is pleased beyond measure.
