I went to Tierney's Tavern for a wings fix a night or two ago. Be advised: the wings come out with no sauce on them, just a small tub on the side. They also taste very similar to KFC wings...probably something in the breading? I was looking for wings covered in sauce and extra crispy. Unfortunatly, they weren't at Tierney's. Also, we ordered a burger, which came out with no fixings (lettuce, tomato, onion). I'm not sure if we were supposed to ask for them or if naked burgers are the norm at Tierney's. read more

This is a pretty low-key place just a short hop from Bloomfield Ave. Sort-of Irish themed with a nice old-school charm. Apparently the place has been around since the 30's. Large bar and about 8-10 tables. There is also a second floor, but I didnt get to see it. Apparently they have live music upstairs on the weekends. I went on a Monday night and it was pretty relaxed with only about a dozen people inside. Bartenders were friendly, drinks were reasonably cheap. Food was pretty good...just the standard burgers and sandwiches pub fare, nothing fancy. Decent juke box. Id imagine it gets much more packed on the weekends, but it seems like a nice low-key, unpretentious place to grab a few drinks during the week. Will likely visit again. read more

I'll give almost any dive bar 3 stars right off the bat. Add $2 PBR drafts, and you get that 4th one. Tierney's is my go-to bar in town. Upstairs, they have bands on the weekends, and the main bar is always awesome. Bartenders are cool, and they do a good job keeping up on busy nights. In all honesty, I've never had a bad time there. I've heard that the burgers are awesome, but my Tierney's diet usually consists of the aforementioned PBR, sprinkled with a shot or two of scotch. read more

It's a cross between a dive and an Irish bar. It was pretty packed with locals on Friday night. There was a band upstairs but I think that was a private event. The bar is pretty big and there are plenty of tables and other seating around the bar area. The bathroom was way too small. My nose was practically touching the stall door as I was taking care of my business. And the sink was clogged which made it very difficult to wash hands. I didn't drink but my friends did and they said the prices were fair and the drinks were strong. The people there were friendly. It's an okay spot just not really my scene. read more

It's a dive bar that puts out a semi-decent burger with a good enough assortment of other bar food. It gets crowded on fri/sat nights or during big sporting events. Very quick and easy lunch spot. First and best thing to remember about Tierney's is that is a bar with a grill - or at least that is what is says on the napkin dispeners...they pour one of the best Guinness pint around and the Harp Lager is plenty cold....this is a real shot and beer joint - and everyone is welcome...college kids on Friday and Saturday nights for the live music, business people for lunch and happy hour during the week, and families after sporting events on the weekend - all have been in there...and be sure to try the burgers - the best around! read more

Been here a bunch of times. Cash only. Great dive bar. The crowd is cool. Upstairs they usually have a band playing. I like that you have the option of seeing a band or staying downstairs, because sometimes I don't want to walk into a super noisy bar. Usually there is a cover for upstairs, but not down. They have a jukebox downstairs. Service is average. I tried the Burger that every one raved about and it wasn't half bad. Super cheap too. The fries were decent as well. read more

We came by for lunch on a random Friday and were two of eight customers at the bar. The bar is a large oval shape with plenty of delicious looking whiskey bottles in the center. Service was fast and with a smile. This is definitely an establishment in the area and happy we stopped by. The menu is small and has the usual bar food. I got the BLT $6 and the husband chicken fingers $6.50. Plenty of tap beers but we decided on PBRs. Initially I was excited. Place seems cozy, they had live music, and the staff I encountered initially was helpful and courteous. The drinks were great, and their food especially their turkey club was on point. What left a long lasting impression was towards the end of my visit. The bouncer was extremely rude (I was told his name was Kyle), and so was one of the female bar tenders. It is highly disrespectful and unprofessional to tell a patron to, "Get the f*** out!" Especially since I was putting my coat on to leave the establishment. Lacking common sense and good judgment. If not for those two employees I would have given this rating a 4.5 and would actually look forward to go back there. If you know what your getting into you'll be happy. This is an historic bar and neighborhood fixture for generations. It isn't fancy, in fact it's well-worn but the service is great (particularly when it isn't too crowded). The pub grub is better than most. So we came here last week and I already can't wait to go back. Reasons? The wings, cold draft beer and the true pub feeling. This place reminded me of Irish bars in NYC but with some killer wings and cold and thank god non flat beer. The wings were crispy and tasty and came with vinegary hot sauce I tend to fancy and the beer was the perfect price for the right pint. Oh and little ones welcome. For some reason I like this place but can't quite figure out why. Sure, I love dirty bars with cheap pints. But there's something missing here despite my return visits. Maybe it's the juke box. But I always need to pay the extra money to find decent songs and then can't hear my choices over the loud din of drunken patrons. Maybe it's the Big Buck Hunter. But I never get to play because some college kids are always hogging the machine. Maybe it's the golfing game. But it's not even real GoldenTee. Maybe it's the bands playing upstairs. But I've yet to pay the cover and check anything out (instead just suffering through the sounds bleeding into the downstairs bar). Tierney's is one of the great dive bars one will find in Montclair, North Jersey or anywhere. It's a great place filled with a diverse crowd of all comers. You can just sit back with a cold one (I like Sammie's, my name for Sam Adams) and just stare at the walls and here the echoes of the past of memories made. Memories. That's a word. I have so many mixed memories. I was married to my now ex-wife Cynthia for 14 years. We are the proud parents of two twin sons, Bradley and Bryan (aka B'n'B). However, things went wrong. There's no reason why -- my work as an actuary, my fear of taking risks (despite my involvement in risk management), fear that I would not live up to my father's success, etc. We simply grew apart and needed to part. They now live in Glenside outside Philadelphia. I miss my sons dearly. Their mom, who has an advanced degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Arcadia University, is very much involved in eastern spirituality. But I am trying to start anew. My new wife, Tonya M., is an adjunct professor in fraud prevention at Montclair State. She was imprisoned for her role in voter fraud due to pressures put upon her by her boss. However, she now wants to help prevent fraud and white collar crime. She is my rock and my white-winged dove. She is the reason why we decided to move to Essex County, in hopes for something else and something more. Tonya and I came here to Tierney's. We had a few cold ones, a bunch of good burgers, and sat between a young couple to one side on what was perhaps their first date. And on the other side was a couple celebrating their 30th year of marriage at Tierney's, the place where they first met. Tonya and I just sat and listened. We didn't need to say anything to each other, but it was a memory all our own. In addition, Tierney's has a great jukebox, albeit a bit hard to find as it's tucked near the bathrooms. They had some of Tonya's favorite artists like Stevie Knicks, Heart and Polvo. They lacked a lot of the 80s and 90s hardcore I'm partial to, but they did have Civ's "One Minute More" and also a lot of solo Lou Gramm. I would recommend Tierney's Tavern to anyone in the Montclair area who wants a few cold ones and some good fries while trying to not let the echoes of their past interfere with what might be a wonderful future. read more

Pretty off the Radar kewl type happening little place. Gets packed on the typical college bar nights. And the beer is cold... and you can drink it. There are tables you can sit at and they have video games and some darts. The bartenders are usually pretty kewl and you might even get a buyback if your lucky.
