Even if there was no Sopranos connection, I'd have loved every minute of my Friday evening spent at the bar here. My burger with Swiss was absolutely one of the best bar burgers I've had and the onion rings were exactly right. Best of all, the staff were all men who look like they were born to tend bar, but remain friendly and helpful and really attentive. It is a lively place on a Friday. It is loud and a big crowd. The parking lot stays mostly filled, so if you don't get there early you will have to circle around for parking. It is definitely loud inside. We had a table but still had to keep going to the bar for drinks. They did bring the food out, but they never came back to clear the paper plates or check on us. Even after we left and other people sat where we were, the dirty paper plates and napkins were still on the table. It took about 40 minutes for the burger. Fries were also ordered. They were thick and kind of dry even though they were covered in cheese. I would pass on those next time. The meat of the burger was pretty good. The cheese was melted on the bun, not the burger. They were busy and looked to have only 2 bartenders so there was some waiting for drinks etc. read more

Tierney's is one of the few dive bars in a sea of modern and fancy places in Montclair, which makes it unique and fun. When I first visited here I was shocked by how busy it was: the bar was packed, many groups were scurrying around trying to find an open dining table (it's self seat), it was very loud, and it was very hot. There were no open tables, so we sat at the bar, ordered a drink, and kept our eyes peeled for an opening. Tierney's doesn't have a cocktail/drink menu, so you're best ordering a beer or a simple cocktail, like a vodka-cranberry. They do pickle-backs and have a good selection of whiskey, so we did one of those. We finally got a (very sticky) table after 25-30 minutes of searching. Not soon after we sat, a very drunk college-aged man told us he needed to sit down with us because he wasn't feeling well. We let him but he passed out 10 minutes later and fell off his chair, face first onto the floor. He bled everywhere from his nose and had to be escorted out by his also very drunk friends. Maybe not a typical day at Tierny's per se, but definitely speaks to the divey nature of the vibe. While the ambiance at Tierny's is not necessarily my speed, the food is undeniably fantastic. The wings are THE BEST wings I have had in a very long time, maybe ever. The batter is so crispy and the meat is so juicy. They're served with blue cheese and buffalo sauce and are absolutely addicting. The onion rings are also phenomenal and they make a very nice burger. I think about the wings often honestly, and they're a craving of mine. The wings keep me coming back, despite the long quests for a table, sticky seats, and the drunk patrons. read more

While visiting friends on the East Coast over the holidays, they brought me to Tierney's Tavern to enjoy a pint and some late night bar food. When we arrived, the place was pretty full, but we managed to find a few spots at the bar. The bartenders were all very kind and attentive, especially Ethan. We ordered our pints and placed a food order for some chicken tenders and french fries. These were no frills but just good old-fashioned chicken tenders and french fries comfort food. You don't need my review to tell you how good Tierney's is.....80 years in business, 5th generation working behind the stick ( bar); There should be a pub like this is every town. Huge parking lot in back; They sell package goods to go; Upstairs is open Thurs-Sunday and often has live music. ( available to rent for parties) Tables outside ( in rear) weather permitting. But downstairs is where it all happens. Slightly dark, loud, lots of wood, booths, and plenty of seats at a large wraparound bar. All kinds of cool, kitschy decor. Good jukebox. Plenty of classic old school working man beers on drafts ( domestic & foreign) & some craft beers as well mostly in cans or bottles) The little grill in the little kitchen serves some great bar grub ( but expect a good wait on a busy night). Chicken fingers, burgers, fries, all sorts of hot & cold sandwiches. Not a big menu but it's enough to get the job done. I had the "off the menu", Buddy Burger which has onions soaked in a special sauce when grilled, served on a poppie seed bun. ( of course I made it a cheeseburger. They have a really good sound system upstairs, a rather large stage area, high tops, a full bar upstairs (and down) & upstairs restrooms as well. I had a burger downstairs & they do have great burgers that taste like you made them on the grill in your backyard. Their fries were crispy on the outside & soft on the inside. I've been living in Montclair for nearly four years now, and had heard wonderful things about Tierney's. Well, a few weeks ago I decided to take the plunge, and am I glad I did. In a world of Smashburgers it was heavenly to harken back to a time when I was served a juicy, delectable burger just the way I ordered it. Bloody rare! And boy, it was Bloody good! Dripping down my chin, every bite was sheer bliss that I didn't want to end. The sautéed onions on the burger were done perfectly and there was NKN. No Ketchup Necessary! A side of beer battered onion rings were the perfect accompaniment. I will be back to Tierney's again...and again. Just thinking about Tierney's brings tears of joy to my eyes. Came here yesterday for the first time after hearing good things. Tierney's has an old school, dark Irish pub feel to it, which is exactly my style. Lots of televisions for sports and an upstairs as well. I had a couple bloody mary's which were made very good, as well as several beers. The service was good, and overall had a fine experience. I was not expecting much from the food, but was pleasantly surprised when the wings came out and were some of the best I've had in recent memory. I also had a cheeseburger which tasted great as well. We came on a Sunday afternoon to try cheeseburgers that were highly rated on NJ.com. Not too crowded but this was before football season had started. Big interior with parking. Bartender took our order and was very friendly. (I don't know why I am surprised when the bartenders are so nice in these taverns and my husband and I are on our "tavern tour to find the best burger" but so far, they have been.) We had 2 cheeseburgers with fries and onion rings. These are thick burgers and I ordered mine med. Would probably order them med-well next time as they were thick and mine was a little under what I like. Onion rings and fries were both good. Everything felt cooked to order and was nice and hot. Huge burger, fresh ground, perfectly cooked (medium) on a hearty roll with a good portion of cheese and nice crisp bacon. For $14 it was excellent value. Thank you Tierney's for creating a good space for my friend's band and other bands to get together and perform. Managers and staff are friendly, and same with the crowd. Service was quick for a busy Saturday night. So what are the drawbacks? Parking is a mess, especially around the 7-8 PM hour, with a lot you can't maneuver around. Upstairs is not wheelchair accessible, with steep steps. As someone with a past history of knee problems, I made sure I held on. Staff still made my friend pay a $10 cover charge, and she is his fiancé, and didn't ask for proof, just wouldn't accept her predicament. Ambience needs an update, especially the old and filthy tiles and carpet. The upstairs bathroom, contains two extremely tight stalls, where it was impossible to move around, let alone address feminine needs. The Shirley Temples I had were okay, just nothing to write home about. If my friend's band was playing again, I will go back and just focus on my friends and the people, because the bar is not that impressive, at all. read more

You can get better in bigger portions elsewhere. I found out after the fact that the cheese steak and the burger are build your own, so you can't assume that the cheese steak is going to come with peppers? The decor isn't bad, but for someone who loves bars, I just didn't regard this as a place I'd be itching to come back to. Settled on a black & tan, true Imperial pint very fairly priced at $6. Menu is basic, large hot sandwiches just $9, add a well-done side of French fries only $3. But I wouldn't call Tierney's a dive bar, it's a wide-open well-lit large space with a tiny kitchen, more of a big neighborhood place for locals. Parking in back if you're lucky. Vegetarian rating 1 star for the 1 option, grilled cheese, maybe add a side of macaroni salad?
