My wife and I just were on our nightly walk through the Plaza and we decided to pop in to Tiddlywinks as we often do with our 1-year-old before bedtime. He loves going into the store. We usually just play with the toys, but occasionally will buy something. We were notified immediately after we walked in the door that they would be closing. I responded with a smile and said, "No problem at all! We'll be really quick". There were also still other customers in the store. I didn't bother to look at my phone to see what time it was and met my wife in the back of the store. A couple minutes later I had picked up a book to show my son and he was laughing. I was asked by the employee again , "Are you done yet?" Mind you, she did have a smile on her face. I immediately put the book down and took my family outside. Obviously upset, we walked across the street and I asked my wife what time it was. It was 6:00pm on the nose. I assumed we were in much after closing according to how the employee made us feel. That wasn't the case. Again, we do come here regularly around this time, unaware of when closing time is because we have never felt like we were being pushed out until tonight. I cannot say enough about this treasure of a place. I am lucky to live in walking distance from it. The owners are super nice and helpful! Reading through some of these negative reviews were shocking. The owners have never been anything but AWESOME to my daughter and they even know her by name. I of course only let her play with the toys that are designated for play (they have many play areas set up). I buy all my birthday gifts here now and the best part is they gift wrap! Every time I need a child's gift, I buy it here. The owner is so friendly and helpful. I give her the child's age and she walks me through the store until I find the perfect toy, book, craft, outfit, thingamajig! The prices are reasonable especially considering her premium location in the Orange Plaza. On top of the best customer service, they wrap everything for you. You get to choose a wrapping paper and then you walk out with a paper bag filled with tissue and a ribbon. The bag has a To/From label, so no card is necessary. (Although, she has cards too if that interests you.) We always have a nice chat about traveling and our families. She remembers her customers, which is super rare these days. My last trip in was on Saturday. I was shopping for a 2 year old boy that has everything. We landed on the dinosaur $20 (pictured) and an ABC dinosaur book $15. The book has these little pop bubbles that have each letter of the alphabet that the kid pops as its being read to him. Interactive learning without a screen, like the good ol' days. Turns out... You have small kids with you while you are strolling Old Town Orange on a pleasant Saturday morning? Then do NOT enter this store!!! It is a kid's equivalent of a $100 scratch-off winner. They win; you pay. But I jest. This is really a cute shop, with a nice variety of toys, many designed to actually stimulate a child's brain. Play and learning together. There are puzzles for different ages. Lots of books too. Of course there are stuffed animals and such. We left with a cat. In it's own carrying case. Prices are reasonable. Fun place to take a browse and to shop. I liked all the brain games and retro game they had. Plus, the selection of miniature toys and accessories. They have craft starter kits and projects for kids. I definitely love Ma-and-Pa toy stores because I find them so unique and beautiful in their own way. Toys shouldn't be so generic where everyone has the same plaything as the other. 5 Stars -- My sister and I stumbled into this adorable little toy store when we were window shopping in Orange Circle. I hadn't planned on purchasing any toys but couldn't leave without their Sticker Books for my kiddies and nephew. What a special toy store in a quaint town. We stopped in here as part of our Orange Walking Food Tour. We obviously didn't eat anything here, but we stopped in as a "this is a special place in our city" type of deal. We loved all the special little (and big) toys they had. They specialize in carrying non-commercial, non-branded items (so you know, no Marvel, etc). We had limited time there and we don't live in Orange, but we decided that we should visit again once our kid is old enough to play with some of the awesome toys Tiddlywinks carries. Yesterday my family from Canada (2 little children and 4 adults) were visiting the shop. We have visited a few times before and have always enjoyed the visits. Yesterday the 2 women working were more intent on sweeping and cleaning...so much so they asked us to move to accommodte their sweeping. It was too much to do a price check on an item. But the most unprofessional part of the experience was when we showed them that a little valentines book was damaged and would they consider a discount. The response was a cold no and we will sell it to someone who is desperate for a last minute valentines gift. So beware they sell damaged items with no compunction. Large hand puppets drew me into this store from the street. I perused the variety of animals represented in puppetry land but was quickly asked if I needed any help. I forgot all about the puppets and was accompanied to age appropriate toys for the children that were with me. Clever! I was impressed with the salesperson's ability to select a toy the child might like based on age appropriateness. My friend's child is young and toys were suggested specifically for that age. The lady actually put the toy in the child's hands to see the reaction to the toy by the child. It was like a raiki type experience which again is very clever! What vibe does the child get from the toy? What child does not like a ball? So simple but an appropriate size was selected by the salesperson. Smart! A green ball and blue ball of correct size was selected and presented to the child customer. Cute! The child went for the small blue ball decorated with robots. Then the blue ball and a red ball was presented to the discriminating customer. He chose the red ball decorated with running dogs and dog bones so she put that in his stroller. Sold! And sweet! Other quality toys were selected and everyone left happy! I will return to look throughout this store by myself. But for this visit, serendipity prevailed. Awww! read more

Having only walked past it before, I was under the impression that they only sold old fashioned vintage style toys. They do have a great selection of old fashioned/nostalgia items, but they also have contemporary toys, European toys, costumes, children's books, educational toys, etc. Everything appears to be high quality. I was able to find an adorable gift (book and matching soft toy) + a card + complimentary gift wrapping within my budget (under $50) The ladies working there were all helpful and friendly. Absolutely love this store. It has both a lot of retro and new toys, a lot of science-based toys too... they'll sometimes have activities for kids, (one time my kids were able to make their own silly putty). At the very least it is a great place to get ideas when you're shopping for kids. It's just a smidge on the pricey side, but maybe if you're in a time pinch and need a great gift this is the place to go. A great selection of toys that you won't find elsewhere. Knowledgeable staff that is attentive and ready to help with any inventory pulls or suitability questions. They always make me look like a thoughtful aunt who has spent months researching what my nieces and nephews would want. In actuality I walk in, say the age, the interests and the budget and I walk out within 30 minutes with a wrapped gem. I am required to show ID with every purchase. It is funny how you now go on here and LIE about what happened that day. You said you were sold out and would get more on the follwoing Tuesday and you would get regular spinners and light up ones. My husband said he would like a light up one and said if we give our number could you hold for us and call when they come in. You asked what color he prefered and he said any color is fine. You took my number and I got a call on Thursday at 1:21pm saying the shipment was suppose to arrive around 4pm. I told the girl we would be in the next day to pick up. We arrived and you had nothing on hold and now when I ask why nothing was held as promised all you kept saying was "it is a popular item". Never did you tell us ONCE that you do not hold items. I'm a big fan of Tiddlywinks and have become a regular here. Between July and September I probably had 15 birthday parties, so the store in Old Towne Orange became an invaluable resource for toy and book shopping. There are a few reasons why I like Tiddlywinks so much: --The toy selection is not what you find in most toy stores. Instead you'll find metal, wood, vintage style, and educational toys that make a statement. I like treating children to toys they might not expect but are still fun, educational and somewhat unique (at least to a young child). Some favorites have included a special glow in the dark journal for young girls; a retro-style Bingo game with a spinning wheel and Bingo letters within, an interactive planes (trains and cars) book series with a grooved track that runs throughout the stories. --The staff and owners are exceptionally good at helping make the shopping experience what you want it to be. I often walk in, say hello, and since they know me, they start with "How old (is the child) and how much do you want to spend?" --I've run price comparisons at Amazon Prime and have found the prices at Tiddlywinks are close if not better in some instances. For example, I bought a metal Tonka dump truck (the bigger size) for $49.99 at Tiddlywinks. It was the same price at Amazon.com. --Free wrapping and a small assortment of cards means I'm ready when I walk out the door. I put the bag of goodies in the car trunk and I'm done thinking about it. --They have gift cards so you can treat an older child to a shopping trip if you're at a loss as to what to buy. --Shopping local and giving back to a merchant I know on sight means a lot to me. --Oh and at Christmastime they have Mrs. Claus do book readings for kids while the parents shop. I was smelling the scratch and sniff cards on their display and the moment I lowered my mask to smell it she promptly and rudely told me to put back on my mask. I was told even with my bank statement they would not exchange item for new one. I will no longer be shopping for my 3 grandkids or family in there. A great toy store that we have frequented on a number of occasions and have even taken our friends to enjoy. Mostly my husband goes in there with our son, he was not allowed to make his purchase because he did not have his ID to use with his card although he has never been asked for it before. After calling the store the owner did state she makes the exception for people she recognizes in a defensive manner. Interesting enough they do seem to have a "watchful eye" whenever he/we walk in there. Not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that he has dreads, so much for respecting our veterans. We try to support local business in our neighborhood (since we live a few blocks away), unfortunately we weren't able to. Tip: take your ID or you can go to Belmont Kidz in Long Beach since they have very similar toys and its a consignment that fosters a parent network and a bit better pricing. read more

I thought this was the best toy store I've seen since I was a child! To my huge disappointment no longer :(. I took my granddaughter in to buy a doll house for her birthday, but while I was selecting it my daughter had grabbed a small toy and opened it just that quick! Instead of helping me with my purchase the owner wanted me to pay for the little toy my 2 yr old opened by my mistake - $14.00 for something that would have been a danger to her to play with anyway!! I came in this afternoon shopping for my nephews fourth birthday. Unfortunately for the store, there was an older lady working with short brown hair and glasses. And we walked through the store playing with many of the sample toys, she continually had nothing nice to say. Now I understand if you're having a bad day, but seriously? You work at a child's store, with kids who frequent often. I know they have rules, but nothing my sister and I did was wrong or apart of any "violating terms." Finally, as we were about to depart, this same worker said, "Oh yeah, if you're parked on the street.. You'll be towed. I'd go check." Now I am also a frequent visitor of the circle, and know the streets don't tow unless it's been three hours. She was just looking for an excuse to get my sister and I out of the store.
