Nice beautiful restaurant inside the hotel .. liked the decor. The staff were extremely nice and attentive.. stopped in for a drink a quick bite ..I'm a big fan of Paloma's this twist with the yuzi was chef kiss definitely on my second spot.. it was perfect.. I had the beef tostada it was so good I know it was because of the bone marrow.. this was definitely a memorable dining experience. The twist on the favorite Latin dishes were done correctly.. it's been a week and I'm still thinking my experience can't wait to come back read more

This place had been on my radar for a few months now and finally got the chance to try it out when one of my friends decided on this place for our monthly girl's night out dinner. First of all, the ambience and décor are simply stunning, comprised of lots of light earthy tones with tons of natural light filtering in. Where we were seated was kind of loud for noise level, it sometimes got hard to hear our server and our own conversations amongst ourselves. What we did like though, was that the tables were nicely sized (we usually order a lot) and that there's a good amount of space between tables so that you don't feel like you're intruding on your neighbor's dinner conversation. Our server was very friendly and offered great recommendations. At no point during our time did we feel rushed. Secondly, the drinks and food. For drinks, we ordered the hibiscus desert balloon, pineapple and ginger tahona, and the century of passion. After trying a bit of each other's drinks, my friends agreed that the pineapple and ginger tahona was their favorite, which was super gingery and refreshing. For food, we were highly recommended the pan frito and the "taco night" tostatda, so we decided to order both, along with the lamb ragu for our light dishes/starters. The pan frito was probably our favorite out of the starters, our server did not lie, the fried cotija cheese balls were very addicting, the accompanying honey butter was super light and utterly delicious. The tostada was good, a lot more loaded than we had expected. The lamb ragu was a bit on the salty side, but we did enjoy the noodles itself overall, bonus was that it had a nice kick of spice to it. Now for main entrees and sides, we ordered the pork rib chop, and the new york strip, along with sides of street corn, yucca brulee, and spiced fingerling potatoes. The pork rib chop was okay, a tad too salty for our preferences. But what we did like about it was that it wasn't dry at all, which is usually a hit or miss when ordering pork chop from most places. The new york strip on the other hand, was as perfect as a steak could get, super tender with an excellent balance of flavor and spices. Out of all the sides, our favorite was the street corn, hands down. For dessert, we decided to order two vanilla flans and one of the pastry type dessert. The vanilla flan was very interesting, we didn't know what to expect when we saw that it had an abundance of shredded manchego cheese on top. Surprisingly, it wasn't overly sweet or heavy. Instead, it was creamy but not overwhelmingly so that we couldn't finish the portion. The combination of flavors and textures from the cheese and flan just worked well together. After our experience here, we all agreed that we'd love to come back and order the pan frito, street corn and vanilla flan again, along with some of their seafood dishes we had been eyeing. read more

This is not just a generic restaurant in a hotel. This is a celebrity chef led establishment beautifully decorated by designer Thomas Schoos at the JW Desert Ridge. The indoor and outdoor dining would have you believing you're in a resort on the Mexican riviera. But the food! I had no idea a simple tomato salad with grilled shrimp could be so memorable. Beautiful, ruby red tomatoes bursting with flavor. Tender Genovese basil, corn purée, burnt corn, pickled onions, and serrano chile are a dynamite combination. With perfectly grilled shrimp, this is my favorite salad of all time. read more

The review and vibe is fine, dining but there are children running around and bathing suits. Not conducive to high-end dining. The food is interesting, on small plates totally not worth the cost. read more

I'm a little sad because I didn't get to have dinner here and the lunch menu is limited. This would have been a solid 5 but my server seemed to not really give a 2 cents about service. But I loved my salad. It was delicious! I added beautiful grilled shrimp that had great spice on them. My side of guacamole was also really good. I was gonna ask server for more chopped chilies but she never came back after my salad was brought by someone else. Like I said Food and beverage was spot on! read more

Located in the JW Marriot Hotel in Desert Ridge, I would highly recommend Tia Carmen. A chill spot but just classy enough for a night or date out. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful with the menu and recommendations. We tried a whole bunch of dishes including various tostadas and other dishes. Drinks always fun and delicious as well. Made reservations for lunch but there were many open tables available for walk ins. The interior is beautiful and modern. The staff were super attentive to my group as they kept checking in on us to make sure things were OK. We got the crispy plantains and I got the fish torta. The pepper sauce for the crispy plantains was really good. It added amazing flavor to the plantains. The fish was very delicate and the sandwich was really good over all. Came back to the resort to check out a different place and it was popping during dinner time. They also validate parking! read more

The restaurant is absolutely stunning! It's elegant, modern, and minimalist. We went on a Saturday for brunch and they offered a buffet only. I was a little disappointed because I was hoping to try their regular menu. The buffet was okay. Nothing was a stand out, nothing was bad either, just a standard fine buffet. I won't go back to the bufet but I will go back to try their dinner service. read more

I would have to agree with the majority of the reviews that the decor at tia carmen is absolutely beautiful. We went for dinner but if you go for breakfast I'm sure the natural sunlight would make the place even more gorgeous and you could amazing photos. I did like the plantains but I wouldn't say the food on the menu blew me away. It was alright. Our waitress actually seemed to disappear after our food came and that was disappointing. The atmosphere is beautiful, the food was okay, and the service started off strong and then kind of fizzled. I like to have water or whatever I am drinking with my food and I did not have my water refilled until a long time. My boyfriend would've liked another beer but again it was like our waitress disappeared. They weren't too busy in the restaurant on a Wednesday. It was to celebrate my birthday and I would just say it was okay. I would like to come back to try their breakfast for sure but dinner isn't it at tia carmen. read more

Ambiance was amazing, food was decent. My pasta was harder than i expected. Im familiar with al dente, but my server referred to it as al dante. We went here for my husband's birthday and what a delight this night was from start to finish! The ambience, vibe and whole atmosphere was inviting and relaxing. Love the decor. Drinks were delicious! The food? OH MY on the food! We haven't found a Mexican restaurant in Arizona that tasted as authentic as real Mexican food like we did coming to Tia Carmen. We just spent time in the south of Mexico recently and this dining experience took us back to that great trip. The presentation here is top-notch, everything looks artistic and everything taste delicious. We had the plantains and pan Fritos for appetizers. The yam dish, the mushroom vegan menudo, corn tostada for dinner and unique flan for dessert. Very impressive all of it. Staff was soooo friendly. Chef Dejan is extremely talented and we spoke to him for a few minutes complimenting the food. We highly recommend coming here for a great experience! read more

What a beautiful restaurant. The decor was so nice and service was excellent and attentive. The food was really good and great presentation. Also I liked that many of the dishes are different (fusion) with such variety of different flavors. Definitely not your typical norm. I heard nothing but good things about this place and the restaurant proved right. They have some really fun cool looking cocktails. They also have an amazing outdoor area lit with twinkling lights and fire pits. I will definitely come back. read more

A pleasant experience had at this establishment with work colleagues! This is definitely a place to enjoy for work or a special celebration due to price! As for drinks: the drinks are unique! One of a kind drinks! One cocktail was 28 dollars: must be special! The drinks were each handcrafted by a great bartender who took great pride in his drinks! As for food: an interesting array of food can be had! To start out we had the plantains. They were not good: I'm not sure if they were made and then reheated. They just didn't taste fresh! The tuna crudo was good: the best part was the sauce! The sauce tasted like a yellow Thai curry sauce! Supper yummy: love to have this in a different dish. The portion was quite small. We also had the tri tip skewers: these were good! The flavor on this dish was spot on! And for dinner I had the bass: this was mentioned to be the house favorite. The bass came with foam and a green nut base thick "sauce." The fish tasted a little fishy to me. This was not my favorite dish! My absolute favorite dish was dessert: the churros were amazing! Usually I wouldn't spend this much on churros but worth every penny! I heard from my colleagues that the flan was good too! The atmosphere and service was good too! Brian did an excellent job! His back up team was equally good! The decorations at restaurant are nice too! I would try this place again but would try a different entree. read more

food was delightful as always. could eat 100 of the corn tostada. Server Jessica was inattentive, and overall not the nicest attitude. Restaurant was busy but not slammed. However, Israel was so helpful and unbelievably kind, above and beyond. when the pan frito was only on the tasting menu for that night, he was able to bring us some anyway, as it's been my favorite since the place opened. Incredibly nice and made my night and was the one who earned the servers tip. Maybe she just had a bad night, life happens, maybe it was because of our age, either way, still an amazing time, but did not feel welcomed by jessica. read more

I enjoyed an evening at Tia Carmen to celebrate some birthdays with friends. Reservations were easy to make. Some highlights that made our evening special: - The ambiance - everything here is jaw-droppingly beautiful - The service - our server (I think a Filipina lady) went above and beyond to make this night special for our group!! - The food presentation - every dish looked stunning and so appealing! It's true we eat with our eyes! - The cocktails - these were not only tasty, but they were creative and beautifully presented - Tuna crudo - EXCELLENT broth with southeast Asian flavors . I would literally drink the broth! - Yucca brûlée - creamy and delectable! - The potatoes - crispy, cheesy, and addicting - Grilled whole trout - tasty without feeling too heavy, accompanied by an herby sauce similar to chimichurri - The flan - lightly sweet and decadent, and topped with cheese! We also ordered the mushroom menudo, taco night tostadas, and lamb ragu, all of which were fine but didn't blow me away (especially considering the relatively high price point). The lamb ragu in particular wasn't as decadent as I'd hope for in a ragu sauce pasta dish; the sauce didn't stick much to the pasta and the two components of this dish felt very separate to me. If you skipped these, I don't think you'd be devastated (go spend your money on a nice steak instead!). Also, the portions here are quite small and our group left still a tad bit hungry. Overall, you're really paying for an experience here (with some good food as an addition). Keep this one on your list when you want a highly aesthetically pleasing early dinner + drinks. read more

Chef Angelo believes cuisine has the power to generate joy, love, and comfort. All of the dishes at Tia Carmen were perfectly prepared to deliver flavor explosion that brings joy and comfort to your tummy! Every dish we had was so full of flavor and meticulous plated. Let's start with the drinks, I opted for something non-alcoholic drink called the Short & Spicy which is aquachile with a hint of pineapple and ginger. My husband had 2 orders of the Mi Tia which was a delightful, and strong, rum cocktail with mango, pineapple and coconut. We tried a few of appetizers and all were delicious. The tomato salad was plump and juicy. The Tri-tip skewers were probably our favorite. They were tender and flavorful. You are supposed to eat them with the leave and pickled onion condiments. Yum! We also loved the tuna crisp which was served with cold yellow coconut curry. The tostada with beef and bone marrow was also extremely flavorful. It was big enough to be shared with 4 people. We ordered 3 different main entrees, the aged steak, chicken thigh, and fish. I say the fish was my least favorite. The chicken thigh dish came with a little broth ans a side of tumeric rice to soak it up. The mole sauce that came with the steak was on-point! You can't leave this place without ordering the vanilla flan. It's to die for!!!! The churros came with 2 side sauce; it was good but it wasn't mind blowing as the flan. read more

We went last night, Sunday 2/15. The rating I'm giving is 100% because of the service we received, not the food. So to start with the food, when we finally got it, it was fantastic. We had a party of 6 and tried a little of everything between us. One person had the tomahawk steak, someone else the seafood platter, many other small plates and meals. It was all fantastic, the street corn was also notable. However, we didn't eat until almost 1 hour and 45 minutes of being seated. It's important to note, we didn't need much time to make our selection so we were not reason for the delays. Our server was just terrible and clueless. She sounded like a California valley girl and just wasn't kind or helpful at all. Drinks weren't served until we had been seated for 40 minutes. And the drinks she brought were wrong and she displayed little empathy for the mistake and said she'd correct the mistake and actually never did. Our party actually just started going to the bar ourselves to get drinks. At one point the waitress came by and almost resentfully explained how busy they are and that's why everything was taking so long; sadly, that was not the case, there where plenty of empty tables around and we watched other tables come and be seated and served while we still didn't have drinks. Someone from our party finally complained to the manager who took over our table and did bring us same free appetizers to tide us over but we weren't looking for free food, we didn't want to be at the restaurant until 9pm on a Sunday night when we had a 6:45pm reservation. This was such a let down, i immediately recognized the chef from Top Chef when we picked this place and had high hopes. Just goes to show a celebrity chef doesn't need to have a good restaurant, they get by on the "fame" read more

The service is not bad assume the cold food wasn't sure to the lack of attention of the waitress. The wait time is not their fault. We didn't make the reservation. After we seated, the food took about an hour when most customers left was the concern. Worst yet, 1 dish was cold. 2 was warm. 1 was hot. Mushroom Menudo: I would advice not to order. I didn't like it at all. Burger and fries: burger was cold and the fries too. Fries: Fries was fresh but seems over cooked. Too hard on some and too salty. read more

I read enough reviews to think this place would be "Good. Not great." I was pleasantly surprised -- it was great. The meat was seasoned very uniquely and gave great flavors while being near perfectly cooked. The sides, especially yucca brûlée and the fingerling potatoes, were amazing, too. We did have the trout and it was fine enough, but the beef -- can't go wrong. Enjoy. *You have to either valet or park in a back lot (in a galaxy far far away). Both validate, but the valet still cost a few bucks. read more

Tia Carmen just opened up a week ago so there's some kinks and operational pieces that need to be sorted out. 3.5 starts rounded up to 4 since they just opened a week ago. The restaurant is location in the gorgeous JW Marriott where on the outside there are fire pits and sometimes live music! We walk inside the grand entrance to Tia Carmen and was loving the vibes already. Decor is amazing - all neutrals and earth tones with large light fixtures and deep curves and high ceilings. Music was random from top 40 to maybe indie(?). Lighting was pretty dim in the back room but lighter closer to the kitchen. Valet parking is $8 and the restaurant will stamp your valet pass to get the discount. Our server offered some great recommendations and was knowledgeable about the menu. A little slow at times and would do things one at a time than multitask if that makes sense. The way the dishes came out was a little strange with the wagyu, crudo, and yucca brulee first, then our drinks, then the avocado aguachile, last tomahawk. They forgot our fingerling potatoes so those came at the very end of the steak portions (we ended up packing to go). FOOD (in the order of rec to pass): Flan - Save room for dessert!! This flan was amazing (great rec from the waiter)! It had some spice to it, the flan was nice and smooth and the manchego cheese shavings on top gave it that savory lift to the sweet caramel. Amazing, so many flavor levels! Yucca brûlée stole the show - it's basically a very rich, buttery mastery potatoes with some nice season blend/cheese or something -- really good! Wish this came out with the steak portion and we tried to save some of it for it bc the steak dipped in this was really good. Tuna crudo - came with 6 pieces of tuna, which tasted fresh. The broth had mini tapioca balls and Thai coconut curry flavor. We enjoyed this! Wagyu kebabs - super yummy! I liked the serving with the perilla leaves and pickled onions. The Wagyu was really tender too. Here's the strange part -- the Wagyu skewers were pencils, but they looked like wooden sticks. We could literally write on the plates. Maybe for the aesthetic of the wood sticks they wanted to use these pencils, but it was really strange. Were we eating pencil lead infused kebabs? Lol Tomahawk steak - 32 oz and market price was $255. Thought this was way too pricey and for some pieces cooked rare to the opposite side good almost a well-done was a tough pill to swallow. I know these steaks as large they are are tough. There was also a top coating that I think was supposed to be crispy but unfortunately was not. On the plate there is some mole, which I liked a lot - very rich. But there wasn't enough and the way it was plated had the mole solidify pretty quickly. Would opt for the ribeye next time. Avocado Aguachile - personally, would skip this. It's half an avocado (literally) and topped with Persian cucumbers. Broth was light, hint of spice, but nothing special and quite pricey. Pretty presentation but I think they should have sliced the avocado than just presenting it as a half order and expecting guests to cut it up. Forgot our fingerling potatoes - there wasn't any sauce with it but parmesan cheese shavings and they are smashed. We ate them the next day with chick-fil-a sauce and it was great. DRINKS: Hibiscus - this is a fun drink where they add a smoke balloon on top to give you the aroma. The drink itself tasted refreshing. Paloma - This drink was tasty! Same with a large avocado leaf in it for presentation which I later removed because drinking a tall glass with that in it with no straw was a process haha. I also like the matcha(?) salt that cascaded a side of the glass for that saltiness. A very thorough review for a new place. TDLR: Beautiful decor, get the flan & yucca brulee, newly opened fine dining, some quirks to be worked out on timing. read more

Tia Carmen is a high quality contemporary south western style restaurant by Michelin stared chef, restauranteur, Bravo Top Chef and cookbook author Angelo Sosa. This restaurant is located in the JW Desert Ridge Marriott in North Phoenix. On tonight's menu they offered lots of interesting appetizers, some tostadas, a variety of entrees and side dishes. We started with the tuna crudo.....It was amazing. It had so many flavors. If you are a foodie you should travel across town to try this dish. We also enjoyed the wagyu kebabs. They are a sort of south west twist on a Thai snack food dish called miang kham (stuffed perilla leaves). They were light but full of flavors and were spicy too! These appetizers were delicious but also on the light side so we had room for more. The baja striped bass was unique and delicious. It was perfect fish encrusted with many seeds, nuts, spices and quality sea salt. You added the foam and mole verde and it became magical. We thought the chef's aunt dish...The Tia Carmen Guisado was a very good chicken dish. It just was very good chicken stewed with very fine olives and an extra good Chile pepper....and rice...We thought it was very good but could us more broth. It also was a bigger dish comparing it to the striped bass. We still had room for dessert so we tried the coriander torte and it was a sweet ending. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. They validate the parking. read more

Took wifey to brunch on Sunday and we absolutely loved it. From the cute decor and relaxing ambiance, to the delicious morning buffet options. Shout out to Dave, he was an awesome server and hands down did everything to make our first experience a good one. Great personality and went above and beyond to make sure we stayed in the shade and had fresh water and clean silverware. We opted for the mercado experience, which gave you choices from their hot dishes, fresh made omelettes, yogurt, pastries, agua frescas, and fresh fruit. We literally tried a little bit of everything, I mean how can you not with a buffet style breakfast. Favorites were: omelette with goat cheese, spinach and tomatoes. Bacon was delicious and perfectly cooked. Yogurt parfait was soo creamy, the vanilla bean flavor was very tasty. Their salsas were awesome, loved the salsa verde. French toast was super soft with a cinnamon swirl to it. Their agua frescas were fresh and went down easy. From pineapple to guava, even the horchata was thick and creamy filled with flavor. My boyfriend's birthday fell during our visit to Phoenix and our stay at the Marriott Canyon Villas, the time share portion of the Marriott Desert Ridge Resort which houses this restaurant. Convenient, as I had already bookmarked this place as a possibility for the celebration dinner! So the week before we headed out to Phoenix, I made reservations online for us and my parents for his special day. May or may not have been necessary, since it fell on a week day. But we arrived a couple minutes early and were seated right away. We got a table in the middle, indoor area of the restaurant, but it was directly next to the door the servers used to get in and out of the patio area and y'all...it was chilly and drafty with the door constantly opening and closing. I know it is Arizona and all, but it CAN get chilly at night in December. I could have asked about being moved to another spot, but as a born and bred midwesterner....I don't want to be a bother, ever. Everything on the menu sounded amazing. But we had to choose. I got a couple smaller sized/appetizer options because I wanted to try all the things. Everyone got something different, too, which meant lots of sharing and tasting. I got the taco night tostada, the squash blossom soup, and a side of the yucca brulee. The soup...listen...I had to stop myself from licking the bowl, because that kind of behavior is frowned upon in public. The tostada was...ok. Tasty, and a premium version of a known thing. I am glad I tried it but...that was a take or leave for me for a future next time. The yucca brulee was SPECTACULAR. I didn't want to share it with anyone. Thankfully, we got two orders of it at the table and we were able to bring some home as leftovers. Around the table, there was also orders of kebabs, grilled whole trout, and chicken guisado. Dessert consisted of sharing the churro and the sorbet (blood orange flavor, and served to give the appearance of a just plucked orange). Also very ok. Not my favorite things, but the table was pleased. In general, we had a better than ok, but not quite jaw-droppingly outstanding experience here. The food was great and the service was pretty good. I really loved the convenience of the location to where we were staying, and I appreciated the relatively generous portion sizes, considering the upscale nature of the spot. An admirable food option for the caliber of hotel it is housed in. read more

I also got the tostada with guacamole very flavorful. We devoured absolutely everything. I was here to celebrate my birthday and the staff made sure to make that extra special. When I heard about Tia Carmen being one of the best new restaurants in the Valley, I knew I had to try it. We were staying at the hotel and didn't have a reservation (they usually book up 3 weeks in advance), but someone gave us a tip to show up at 5 and ask them to squeeze us in... And they did! Inside and out are gorgeous. Definite Tulum vibes. Service is top-notch. Brian was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. Cocktails were good. We tried 4 of them! Haha Our favorite was actually a mocktail- the Short & Spicy. It tastes like a spicy, less sweet margarita. Honestly the best mocktail I've ever had. I will dream about it from now on. If you like mezcal, the Century of Passion is perfectly balanced and delicious. Now on to the most important part- the yummy food. We started with the Pan Frito- fried bread stuff with cheese, service with honey butter. So good! We tried the romaine salad. It was good but nothing out of this world. Actually needed to add salt and pepper to it and heard another table ask for the same. The star of the show is the Tuna Crudo. If you look up pictures of Tia Carmen, you will see this dish. It's presentation is gorgeous and the taste is out of this world. The tuna is in a corn, coconut broth with a little bit of spice. You will want to slurp up the broth after eating the crudo. Luckily, the encourage it and even give you a spoon to do so. Tostadas were delicious. My husband loved the Tuna and I loved the ceviche. We tried a buñuelo de viento for dessert. That thing didn't stand a chance it was so yummy. Overall, definite 5-star experience. I'm recommending Tia Carmen to everyone I know! Just make sure to make a reservation! read more
