I once went on a date with a guy in a mid-western city. He knew Boston, though, and missed it. You're an 8 here, he said, but in Boston you'd be a 6. I knew what he meant. If Thyme Square were in Boston or New York, it would survive. It'd be upper half, but it probably wouldn't get five stars. I'd be parsing service or the mediocre tang of the Hollandaise sauce. But Thyme Square is not in Boston. It's in Q-effing-Illinois, two hours from cities you've never heard of, and six hours from O'Hare, which is the most direct way of getting here. It's the kind of place where a wrong turn near the river feels like a portal to a James Dickey novel. Thyme Square is a marvel, a joy, a lovely little oasis, a foodie-wonderland almost on the banks of the muddy Mississippi. You could hit it with a silted baseball. We entered on a weekday morning, around ten. Just two of us, but we were expecting a third. The hipster-server greeted us warmly. Coffee and familiar chatter. The sun streamed in the windows. The place was buzzing with diners, plenty of them, a surprise considering it was a weekday mid-morning and the streets were empty. Where did they come from? Doesn't anybody work? Oh, that's right. Farmers and grain sorters. And us. Ambiance is lovely and spare. Plenty of room. Comfy seats. A cool bar area. A really chic waiting/cocktail area. I hear the dinner menu is awesome! But we were here for brunch. The menu offered a lot of options but I went for my favorite: eggs Benedict. Without any fanfare, I was served a homemade English muffin and home-cured Canadian bacon, probably the best Canadian bacon I've ever had. Maybe the best cured meat I've ever had. Dang, it was good. And no one mentioned that they did all their food "in house" except the guy at the table with me. In Boston, the hipster server would have given the spiel. Or it would have been in second-coming font all over the menu. So add modest to the virtues. One companion got omelet with cheese and 'shrooms with a side of sausage patty. (The patty arrived long after the omelet. Minus half a star.) The other got hash with two perfectly poached eggs, the kind that spurt sunshine at the poke of a fork. (Add a star!!) How do they do it? Someone in the kitchen cares!! So, a Boston 4? But definitely a Quincy five. read more

If you want fresh food that uses great quality ingredients and really cares about their food this is your spot. In a world of short cuts they don't appear to take any. I can tell they take their farm fresh approach very seriously and they do a great job of bring the best of those flavors out. I was really impressed and would definitely go back next visit to Quincy. The food is very reasonably priced, they use more of a farm fresh approach with out overpricing their menu. I had the free range turkey sandwich, they really made it stand out with all the multilayered flavors. The asparagus soup was a first for me, same as above just wow, very well done and I really want some more as I write this. The bread and butter were delicious as well, they really have some talent here. The strawberry tea I had to drink was made with real strawberries and not with syrup, it tasted way better. This was a great meal and I really want to try more of their menu. I really respect what they are doing here and I would encourage others to try them out. read more

I was so happy stumbling across this cafe during a recent visit to Quincy. After dining the night before at another local establishment in town where no staff or customers were wearing masks, it was very refreshing to walk into the cafe where every single staff member (even the cooks in the kitchen!) were wearing masks. All customers who were waiting for a table were as well. Thank you for taking this so seriously! I loved the menu and was especially pleased by the number of hot tea options on the menu. I had the garden omelet with a cheddar biscuit. Both were delicious. The menu touts 95% of food items are from local farms. I believe it - the quality and taste of the food reflected this. When you talk about farm to table, Thyme Sq should be top of the conversation. They have such unique and wonderful dishes. I'm going to focus on their breakfast/brunch because I swear they have the best breakfast sausage I've ever had. You can taste the freshness in every bite. You know by that taste that this sausage is made fresh in house. The dishes such as their Country Benedict are dynamic and unique. They don't over plate with portions and the give you enough of each piece of the dish to really have an incredible experience while eating. Solid all around. Second time eating here for breakfast. Not only is the restaurant absolutely beautiful, but the food is delicious as well. We had a party of twelve this time around and the waitress did amazing keeping us all happy. I love all the handmade breads and the house made meats. Even the hot sauce I asked for was made in house (and wonderful). So far, Quincy has been slightly disappointing in the dinner department for our quick weekend getaways, but we can always look forward to a fantastic breakfast! read more

After having multiple people recommend brunch/breakfast here, we were completely disappointed. It took quite a while for our food to arrive, and wasn't all that busy. When it did arrive, our expectations were not even close to being met. I'm guessing there was a screw up in the kitchen or with our waitress as three out of four of our breakfasts were brought out by another waitress and they were lukewarm, if that. The gravy on the biscuits and gravy had already solidified again and the pancakes couldn't melt the butter. I'm sure that my corned beef hash may have at one time tasted good, but like the two other items - it had been sitting around long enough to get cold. We discussed sending them back when the fourth item arrived, hot, but we didn't have the time to wait around for it to be prepared again. The waitress was very nice, but very inexperienced (or inefficient?) and she couldn't handle the four tables she had. It took four trips to our table to get us three waters, an OJ, tomato juice and a mocha. The mocha came without a spoon & even after asking, never got one. When she would drop off some of the drinks she would say that she'd be right back to take the order (rather than just take it) and even on the fourth trip she excused herself to go to another table that had two more people just join it... Hoping that this was a one off, but for the price really wasn't worth it at all. read more

I moved away from Quincy in 2012 but EVERY time I go back to visit, Thyme Square is on my list of places to visit. Every. Time. I remember years ago when I received a tour and saw their bacon being cured in house. This is when I knew they truly cared about the flavor of their food and I was immediately hooked. To this day I still brag that TS has the best bacon I've ever had (and I always order bacon wherever I go). If you're looking for savory biscuits and gravy, you need to come here! And if you also enjoy homemade jam, make sure to get a side of toast to try whatever flavor they have at the time. I've yet to be disappointed with their jam. Quincy has long needed such a phenomenal brunch place as this. They will buy local and show what farm to table should be about that several places in Quincy can't quite understand (or at least don't advertise). As far as service goes from the staff... wow. Always friendly and attentive. I usually have Jodi wait on our table, who is the absolute sweetest, but everyone you interact with truly looks like they enjoy working there. Tip: purchase a Thyme Square gift card at Sam's Club. $40 for $50 worth of food. Comes in 2/$25 gift cards so you could keep one for yourself and gift it to a friend. The customer service there is terrible. I ordered for curb side pick. Called to let them know I was there, she told me I needed to come inside. When I said I couldn't I had kids in the car with no mask she acted annoyed and told me I would have to wait until she has time to bring it out. Order a separate time. Requested mushrooms be added to the dish. When I arrived I asked if I owed extra for the mushrooms. They replied "We didn't add the mushrooms." And turned around and walked away. Someone else finally explained they couldn't add substitutes but nowhere on there menu does it say that. We won't be going back. read more

Who knew the best burger of my life would be 5 and a half hours from my house?! My sister and I went down to Quincy, Illinois to visit my baby brother at college over a long weekend recently. Being the elite Yelpers that we are, we were constantly trying to seek out the best stores and restaurants to dine while we were in the area. The night before we left, we pulled up Yelp to see what breakfast/lunch options we would have for the next day before we hit the road and came across Thyme Square Cafe. People had plenty of good things to say about this restaurant and it was enough to get us to make this our destination. We were a little behind schedule that particular morning and after a quick stop across the street at the Quincy Farmers Market, we missed breakfast time and only had lunch as an option. No complaints from me! We walked in to what truly felt like a cafe. It's a smaller place with seating both inside and out, a small bar where you could sit and eat and staffed with some of the nicest people I've ever met. After reviewing their menu, I discovered that these folks use fresh, seasonal, quality ingredients in all their dishes. Around the table we had a pork sandwich with their bacon potato salad, a prime rib sandwich also with the bacon potato salad and I had originally ordered their poached chicken sandwich but after seeing a burger pass by me, I tracked down the server to see if it was too late to change my order to a burger and the owner stopped by to let me know they were more than happy to accommodate! He took my order and a short while later, my gorgeous cheeseburger with bacon and pickles arrived. My sister and brother enjoyed every bite of their lunch and were kind enough to let me taste both the potato salad and the prime rib. Both were delicious. I could not believe how much I enjoyed the the potato salad, I was almost upset that I ordered the homemade chips but I wanted to try something different than everyone else. My burger was beyond delicious. It was incredibly juicy and flavorful. I was mad while I was eating it because I knew if I wanted to have it again, I would have to drive more than 5 hours to get it. The service here was friendly. The food was top notch and the atmosphere, while simple, it was lovely and clean. My baby brother graduates from college next May, and I have every intention of making at least one meal at Thyme Square while we're in town that weekend. Meehhh. Based on the reviews we decided to give this spot a try for breakfast. We're on our way home and Quincy was a planned night stop (we've been on a 7 day road trip thru IL, IN, WI). I ordered the breakfast burrito and unfortunately it disappointed. Lukewarm at best, ingredients precooked and simply thrown into a flour tortilla, rolled, plated with a scoop of home potatoes tossed on the plate. The fresh salsa did add flavor, but it was an overall disappointing breakfast. The coffee was also lukewarm and bitter, the cream did little to soften the bitterness. The restaurant is also extremely noisy, the dining area is in a large old renovated building and the sounds bounces off the walls and ceiling. My wife ordered the traditional breakfast and she said it was okay, except for the uncooked bacon and everything being lukewarm. She did like the sourdough toast and seasonal jam. read more

We were in Quincy on business last Saturday and had a few hours before our appointment so decided to find a nice sit-down breakfast spot. YELP found Thyme Square Cafe. It was early and they were not busy yet. I ordered the Classic Eggs Benedict and DH ordered the Blackstone Benedict without hollandaise. Both were wonderful. They are served with breakfast potatoes which were fine, but a hot bowl of buttery grits would have made the dish perfect. Overall a great experience. Was visiting a friend who lived in Quincy and she recommended this place. My friend called ahead to make a reservation for 8 so I probably recommend that just in case. We were seated at a nice table and offered kids chairs for my friend. Very friendly staff and helpful. My boyfriend is Gluten Free, but had a fair share of good items to choose from. We both selected the Thyme Burger, his GF substitute was on a bed of greens. Both burgers were juicy and felt homemade. Their butternut squash soup was tasty as well. Just simply farm to table food and love that the menu changes with the seasons. Friendly staff, very good food options, would recommend coming and wish I could visit again next time I come into town! Lived in Quincy long time and back for a visit for personal reasons. Couldn't wait to eat here again with my mom only to be sadly disappointed. We got quick coffee and water ordered and then never could get a coffee refill until food came even after asking several times. Then waited longer told had to make a pot. I live in Texas and was dying to have real biscuits and gravy here. So sad, the gravy great biscuits hard and dry, asked for eggs sunny side up came cooked hard. Thyme Square is not a bad early morning breakfast spot. The servers and staff are friendly. Usually accommodating depending on the server. My one complaint about this place is the removal of the Lox Benedict. Call me opinionated but I believe that is one of the best items on the menu. I know they recently switched to another menu due to the season change but the removal of the Lox is a heart break and tear jerker. It's half the reason I even think of Thyme square for breakfast in the first place. To add when I called to ask about the meal , the staff member on the phone was rude, telling me yes they have Lox but bc it's not on the menu they will not make my Lox Benedict by request. Food and service was great pre-pandemic. But now they are allowing customers to go in mask-less and advertising curb side pick up but then they don't answer the phone to bring it out curbside. Which is bad given I just watched mask-less customers walk in while sitting at my car. Their sign to wear masks is on the side window not even on the main door making it clear and obvious that customers should be wearing a mask. Seeing how Quincy was just recently one of the top cities with regards to COVID-19 cases as a percentage of population, that's a bad look for a restaurant. Lastly, their take out containers are some of the LEAST environmentally friendly that I've seen in a while. Styrofoam inside styrofoam, and Quincy doesn't even recycle styrofoam. I hoped a locally owned restaurant would strive to do better because they definitely can. Perhaps I'll go back in person at a later time, but definitely not getting take out again. read more

Today was the first time that we have eaten at Thyme Square Cafe and I can say without any doubt that they have the BEST eggs Benedict I have ever had!! The hollandaise sauce was so creamy one would almost think it was whipped! It was served with potato's and homemade ketchup! They also make bread and hams in house!! Such an amazing place to eat and so unique for the area! I live a couple hours away from Quincy but will make it a point to go back more often just to get to eat at this restaurant! Thyme square is a Quincy breakfast MUST- don't get me wrong they have wonderful lunch as well but their breakfast is just SO GOOD! I usually get the eggs Benedict omelet and my husband usually gets the sausage eggs Benedict! They have great staff and a super cute atmosphere! They serve alcoholic drinks and for lunch the salmon is always delightful! My one rule is that you must always get a macaroon before you leave- you won't be disappointed! read more

Fantastic menu! Worth the drive. I'm having lox tartine and Steve is having the upscale biscuits and gravy. The juices are fresh squeezed. The Orange mango is a generous pour and delicious. Wow on the coffee! The atmosphere is charming. The ceiling is stamped and the wood floors appear to be original. The blend of classic and modern works well. Service is excellent. Busy Sunday but after about a 30 minute wait, we were seated, our orders taken with beverages served immediately. Food came quickly. Staff was pleasant and professional. Everyone wore masks! Yeah!! I had the corned beef hash, partner had biscuits with gravy/cheese/ eggs and potatoes. Food was served hot, potatoes crispy, corned beef obviously home made- not canned. We shared a fluffy buttermilk pancake with real maple syrup! They serve some adult beverages at breakfast, including a spiked milkshake (next time!) this is a great place. Well worth the wait.
