I never imagined that I would ever get over the fear of going to the dentist!. I was just not able to get myself to go through my worst anxiety. Reasons for that but I went 10 to 12 years of literally not even wanting to think about it. I now wish that I could have met more dentist's like Dr. Sapp. Unfortunately I can't explain the fear that I had from previous experiences. I recently had a tooth extracted. Process was smooth and it healed nicely. Last night the crown fell off the tooth next to the extraction site. I called this morning to ask if I could come in and was given an appointment tomorrow morning. If all goes as expected I will be in and out quickly with out any issues. I hope that the crown is not damaged and can be replaced without having to be replaced. The staff and the doctor are awesome. They are all very professional and accommodating to my needs. I am thrilled with my first visit to Thurston Dental. I am a recent transplant to Olympia and did not yet have a local dentist, when I was struck with a dental emergency. I knew that I needed more than an evaluation of my condition, but actual treatment (and on a Monday no less). I was able to come in on the same day AND get a root canal. I know that people aren't generally happy with a root canal, but when it's what you need, it's what you need! Every person on Dr. Sapp's team that I interacted with kind, and understanding. I went to this dentist by God's blessing. I truely cryed today when I got home and showed every one my teeth. I just went in for a cleaning and some fillings. And Dr. Sapp went out of his way to fix my teeth so beautiful. I have always had mark on my front tooth it was like a brown circle on one front tooth and my teeth were jaggity and the bottom teeth had different highths. And did my fillings and said let me polish these up a bit and then he said I will file this lower tooth so it don't hit the top one wrong. And my teeth are so perfect now I can't stop looking at them and feeling them. I feel truely blessed to have met Dr. Sapp and him going out of his way to do this for me is something dentist don't do. I just can't say enough about Dr. Sapp at Thurston Dental and his staff. Not only do they REALLY know what they're doing, they are the friendliest dentist office I've ever been to. Dr. Sapp is so compasionate. He really doesn't want you to feel any pain at all. Another great thing is that he doesn't "find" stuff to do in your mouth. If he sees a problem coming on, he keeps an eye on it but doesn't jump in with doing things just to earn more money. A very honest guy. Full disclosure from the start, Dr. Sapp was excellent. However, my problem with the office is the front desk not listening and wasting my time, money, and insurance allotment without any real care for me or my family, and the assistant who took my x-rays. I have dental/needle anxiety and a medical condition where I have low blood pressure so I called ahead and was VERY VERY clear about this before I ever set foot in the office. Yes, of course, they said they could handle all that no problem. I checked several and even called back a second time to double check that they took our insurance, understood our challenges, etc. I was annoyingly thorough. I went in the day of my appointment and needed x-rays. I have a small mouth and asked for a pediatric bite plate (which makes it comfortable). I was informed they don't have those at all. I told the attendant it was pretty painful and she said "Tell me when you need to stop and we'll just work through it." Pretty sure WE weren't in pain, thanks, or it might have been done differently. So, that was super unpleasant. After that the exam went fine, Dr. Sapp was fine. Credit where due, he was polite, kind, listened, and seemed genuinely interested in my care. I left and the desk wanted to schedule a cleaning, breaking up the exam and cleaning was the easiest way to get me in before several months from then (also fine). However, when I called to schedule the cleaning because other than the awful x-ray experience it was OK, I ask about nitris and how much it is because our insurance does not cover any comfort measures. This was the point I was informed they don't use nitris because Dr. Sapp is allergic. I reiterated I specifically ASKED if it was available and was told it was as a condition of scheduling here at all. The gal said, "Oh sorry, I must not have been here. I would have said something. So when can we schedule you?" She then proceeded to tell me they would give me all the injections I needed to be numb, reminded her needles aren't great. Then she said they could prescribe me Valium. Thanks, hard no, heart condition. Then I was the problem and the attitude was thick on the ground from there on out because I needed to go elsewhere. After several calls the attitude dried up some and they have been OK getting everything sent to another dentist but it was a huge waste. They used up my time (waiting a several weeks for the appointment), my insurance allotment for an exam, never had any real ability to meet my or my spouses long term needs, now I have to find another dentist who is willing to take their x-rays, and notes from their exam as there is no longer an allotment for me to get another one for another year. In short, they did not listen (or just didn't care), and have caused a tremendous mess for me and my family. If you just need basic dental care go for it, the office and doctor are both nice, as the other reviews say, Dr. Sapp does a good job, but if you need any sort of accommodation, even if you are SUPER clear about it, I would go elsewhere if you can. read more

I have a friend who recommended Dr. Sapp to me recently for wisdom teeth extraction. I had recently started having complications from the teeth, and I was the oldest of all of my friends to still have my wisdom teeth, and my age made me nervous that this extraction could be complicated. Dr. Sapp on the phone assured me this would be no problem. I had recently started having great discomfort in my cheek due to the teeth, and Dr. Sapp got me in the office within a week. From the recommendation I received I was willing to drive down from Seattle all the way to Olympia to get the teeth pulled. When I got there Dr. Sapp could tell how nervous I was, and kept me in the loop constantly on what was happening, and also helped alleviate my nerves with a great sense of humor. The hour plus drive in each direction was worth it. The only thing I noticed was a bit of pressure, and next thing I knew the teeth were out. You only see a dentist every six months, and I am happy to continue to send my business that way. Dr. Sapp made an uncomfortable activity as enjoyable as possible, and gave me plenty of after procedure tips to keep my swelling to a minimum. I definitely recommend him! read more

I went to see Dr. Sapp for a second opinion for a scheduled dental procedure. The receptionist was very friendly, welcoming and informative and put me at ease right away. Dr. Sapp is the best! I recently started experiencing an incredible amount of pain in a few teeth, it was to the point where I could not sleep at night. If I was eating and I bit down on the wrong tooth it was like I got punched by a professional fighter right down on top of the tooth rendering me useless for about 5 minutes. I had not been to a dentist in years since I was 7 so I was quite nervous. Dr. Sapp made this trip to the dentist painless. He was as professional as you could hope for while still being fun to talk to. He made it clear that the teeth causing issues needed to come out and got started right away after I gave the OK. He did a excellent job of numbing my teeth, all I could feel was quite a bit of pressure on the jaw and before I knew it the procedure was done. Personally, I don't like to complain when I have a bad experience somewhere but today I just cannot let this go. I'd like to warn others of the horrible experience I've had at Thurston Dental. I have 3 kids and I am pregnant with my fourth and was advised I should see a dentist before I have the baby. I've been seen at many different offices and have never had any issue with the staff. Today I walked in with my 2 year old strapped to his stroller with a tablet so he would be entertained during my cleaning. The first lady to greet me at the desk looked at my son in disgust and asked if someone was coming to get him. I answered no and she ran and grabbed another lady. This lady immediately said I'd have to leave and reschedule because kids are not allowed at the dentist. Apparently at their practice debris goes flying everywhere (her exact words), instruments used in the cleaning can go flying or fall on the ground and children grab them. She then said she's been in dentistry for 20 years and kids have never been allowed. I am a stay at home mom and my husband works long hours, he was even overseas for years and I have always had my children with me everywhere I go. I have never been treated with such disrespect because of my children. Just the facial expressions of these people towards my child said it all. I highly recommend no one go to this practice. I am still in awe that I was refused service because I am a mother and I will be making a formal complaint against them as well. read more

I've had what I thought was a good dentist before, but Thurston Dental is the best by a HUGE margin! They don't just provide superb quality, high-tech dental work; they also treat you like an equal person whose opinion, time, understanding, and comfort matters. I've had an exam, cleaning, several fillings, and a chip repair here in the past few months (it would've taken that long to get a single appointment at my last dentist); none of the procedures hurt (or were even unpleasant), all felt very personalized, and my teeth look and feel better than they have since they were brand new! I also really like that it's a reasonably sized office where the dentist himself sees you each time you come in, and not a giant, over-staffed, factory-feeling facility. I've never been to any dental or medical office where I felt as well informed, honestly listened to, comfortable (even jovial), and included in every process as I do at Thurston Dental. ^.^ read more
