After moving into our new build we decided a pool was necessary. We searched many companies and eventually decided on Thunderbird Pools and Spas we felt they had a straight forward business model, was detailed and had lots of options. During the build process I would say communication is not their strong point it started off great then eventually I was the one consistently inquiring on stages and what's next who would be coming out. When the work was completed it was great, just not having an up to date timeline on who/when things would be accomplished was not what I anticipated. Overall great company! Thunderbird pools was a pleasure to work with from design and planning to completion. They estimated a 6 month completion time from the start of the project and far exceeded that time line. I'd originally started speaking to them while my home was being built. My close date moved a few times and they were able to accommodate that. After close, they started the project within a month as I'd requested. They were extremely timely with updates and all of our coordinators were very responsive. We used them for our front and backyard landscaping as well and while they are technically separate entities, they worked well with one another to perfectly time everything. They executed beautifully on the vision in my head and for a minute there, I wasn't sure how it would turn out but it turned out beautifully! We had the pleasure of working with Thunderbird Pools and Spa and Thunderscapes to build our dream pool/back-yard paradise. We worked with Jeff Hyler (our sales contact and a very talented landscape architect) to design our space. Jeff was able to interpret what was in our minds and bring it to fruition in a way that far exceeded our expectations. One of our goals was to carefully develop and finalize plans that would require no change-orders. This was achieved as a result of productive conversations and planning sessions with Jeff to ensure that we were accounting for all of the engineering specifications, City requirements, HOA requirements, and an outstanding visually appealing masterpiece. We also wanted a state of the art pool, with options for auto cleaning/filtering during off-peak hours. Our pool is equipment is extremely efficient and requires very little effort on our part. The project management of our project was executed flawlessly and our pool was completed within the timeframe stated in our contract. The salesperson was prepared with a drawing of my yard before he arrived. I explained what I wanted (nothing fancy) and he asked all of the appropriate questions. I got an estimate within 24 hours of his 1st visit. We went back and forth a few times over the design and he always stuck with me to give me what I wanted. From start to finish my pool was completed 5 months from the hard dig. After a ridiculous amount of research and reading reviews, we decided to go with Thunderbird Pools and are so happy we did! We have neighbors that used a different pool company (big name) and it was interesting seeing the differences...starting with the rebar foundation. Thunderbird uses almost twice the amount and everything was spaced and bent so consistently. The other company's rebar looked loose and floppy. The next difference that we took note of was the shotcrete...once done applying, our crew set up a sprinkler on a timer to help with curing. Again, the other pool company applied the shotcrete then left it in the blazing sun/heat of September with no water application. And the list just goes on all the way through to completion. We would've never really appreciated all the great workmanship if we didn't have that comparison right next door, so I'm really grateful for that. Our pool start up was 8/2014. I interviewed 5 pool companies. Thunderbird Pools was our favorite. I found them on Yelp. I mainly chose them due to the reviews and an excellent track record with the BBB, They took the time to design it just like we wanted. The price was great, and I like how they used the top end of all the products out there as a standard. Pentair variable speed pump to save energy, pebble sheen as a standard! After all their name was behind it. They take their time from design to permits to do it right avoiding costly short cuts and rookie mistakes. Don't think because they have competitors that they are enemy rivals. They didn't have a negative thing to say about any competitor. They shared with me that they are actually friendly with one another after all they are in the same business and have the same interests. They allowed our landscaper to remove the fence so we could save money. The company who dug the dirt for our pool laid dirt and plywood over our existing pavers to protect them the best they could which actually worked great! After our pool was completed we wanted to have additional paver work done. Lisa who was a sweetie pie through the whole entire process gave us the name of the company who did their pavers so we could go through them directly and save money. There is a pool tech assigned to you once the pool is complete you can message any time to any questions.I have never had issues asking questions over the years with anyone. 6 years later our pool is still going strong and is looking beautiful. I was worried never having a pool before that it would be hard to maintain. It is a breeze. I am the pool gal! Our pool is nothing extravagant, but its our neighbor's favorite. If we ever move and build another pool we definitely will use them again. I looked at the BBB recently at pool companies as a new neighbor across the street from me was looking to build a pool. I was really surprised to see all the horrific photos and reviews of a couple other companies gone from the BBB from the last time I looked everyone up when we were looking to build our pool. Even the ones on Google. Is it like debit? Forgiven after 7 years? I have a good professional relationship with Thunderbird Pools not a personal one, but I know what to expect and I can trust them. We wanted to add a slide and wanted a quote. They were uninterested in adding a slide no matter what the financial value was to them. I was kind bummed about it, but I learned after calling around.none of the major pool builders did it either. Specialty companies are the way to go for that. Thunderbird also offered to give us copies of anything so who ever did our slide would know where everything was underground. Before building don't forget to think about umbrella / volley ball sleeve locations. Think about if there is anything you would want to upgrade in the future so they can help design it to accommodate those possible future needs and make it easier. Also we personally chose the vacuum attachment we named (Jawz) rather than the in floor cleaning system. All my neighbors have the in floor and they all have stains at the bottom of their pools. Theirs were not built by Thunderbird, and they were build before ours, so maybe things have changed over the past 10 years. Happy pool building. It is such an exciting adventure. We have definitely been recommending Thunderbird to friends and family since we started working with the company. With all the horror stories from friends over the last couple years regarding installing or redoing pools, I reached out to as many companies as possible - the only one I actually got a good feeling was Thunderbird pools. Tim McGee was our designer, he listened to what I wanted, and did not laugh at my budget like some other pool companies had. In fact Tim was so great, he didn't try to sell us on a spa that wouldn't have worked for our budget or goals. Tim has been involved through the entire process. Everyone we have worked with is great! Lisa, Britni, Cynthia, Joe, Ben, Arturo... all have been on top of it. I am pretty sure we even finished early!! Another great point - I could not believe the options without upgrading. The tile options were VASTLY superior to any other pool company I spoke to. The package pricing and base price for everything is very competitive and we were able to add several upgrades like the UV filter and still keep the project UNDER budget. The whole team at Thunderbird have been so great to work with. Our design process with Hailee was so easy and she helped to create a backyard we dreamed of. Joe and Tony were great to work with as well and so responsive and informative throughout the entire process. Office staff didn't disappoint either. My one suggestion would be for the team to provide the details on requirements for security barriers according to the city up front. We had some delays because we didn't have those details but we worked through it and once we had our approvals Thunderbird moved so quickly to get our pool finished. Cohl, I am disappointed by your excuse for your bad attitude. I was cordial, you never asked about what I wanted or appeared interested. When you said let me get done measurements without asking what I was planning that showed your disinterest. When you came in to my home, you said it would be about $40,000-$50,000! That's quite a large gap considering you didn't ask what type of pool surface I was looking for or what options are available, you never asked about the decking choices or how much of the yard I was looking to cover. I asked about overlaying decking material (which is common) & what your view of that is, you said "that wouldn't be a project for me". No opinion, no offer of options, no suggestions, no details about how you came to $40,000+ price tag when we didn't discuss any details. It's YOUR job to earn my business, but evidently you're doing ok without it. My review was honest & clean, but your reply of excuses that I made you feel uneasy? Come on Man, really? You couldn't be successful if people make you feel "uneasy" after you're late. I actual offered you leeway of 30 minutes after our appointment because I understand delays. Contacted Thunderbird pools 6 months before my new home build was ready to move in, they had me fill out an online form and told me they would be in touch. 30 days before closing I still didn't receive communication back. Contacted them through direct message on Instagram in which a rep told me he would be sure that they would reach out. Two weeks past not one word from Thunderbird pools. I sent a few more direct messages on Instagram to this business with no reply. Called and left messages with no reply. Emails, no reply. Recently commented on one of their Instagram post about how they never contacted me and it was deleted. My neighbor who's build was constructed 3 months after I closed escrow has already began excavating by Thunderbird. My business was completely and deliberately ignored by Thunderbird. Way to go Tbird. You complete my brother's pool and he recommended you to me. I can only imagine what your lines of communication are like with your current customers. After several personal friends recommendations and a lot of research, we decided to use Thunderbird Pools for our first consultation, and we reached out to them on 2/11 3/11, Mike, the designer for Thunderbird Pools came out for our scheduled consultation (1-month initial contact) for a new swimming pool and hot tub build. He listened to what we wanted and answered all our questions. Seemed like there was not going to be any issues with him but never made it far enough to see a design. He followed up with us quickly. This review is not about Mike, it is about Cohl Workman, the owner of Thunderbird Pools. I would give Mike a good review and hope that he finds a better company to design for. What Cohl promises on his website, i never saw and was absolute disappointed. 3/12, Mike contacted us and asked if he could bring the owner out to double check the sloping issues in our yard to make sure there were no issues. I said no problem and it was set for 3/15 for any time after 2pm. 3/15, Mike asked if we could reschedule to 3/16 at 1pm and I said that was fine. 3/16, Mike let me know that the owner was running late, and they would be 10 minutes late and I said that's fine. They assumed I was not home and just went in the backyard which was fine. I went out there and Mike said "hey how you are you doing" while Cohl, never even acknowledged me and seemed irritated that he was there. I asked them if there were any concerns with the sloping and told Mike not to worry about the backwash hard line as we found another option which quickly got Cohl's attention. He asked "what do you mean backwash", so I explained. He got defensive and said "all of my filters are Cartridge filters and if you don't like it, use someone who does" I asked are you actually serious right now, and he said yes. I said that I wasn't interested in a cartridge filter and he said, "Well I guess we're done here then" and left. The designer asked if I wanted to go any further with the project and I said absolutely not while he just stood there looking like what just happened. I went to the front as Cohl was leaving and I said that was real professional as he asked "what, I was just getting a drink from my truck, I wasn't leaving". Right, you just said we're done here and left 30 seconds ago. Then he approached me and told me that I was not going to tell him how to build his pools. (um, do you mean my pool?) He said that he was a professional luxury pool builder that has been in business 18 years and has always used cartridge filters for "his pools" and that he didn't plan on ever changing "his pools". He never said why he doesn't or talk to me more about them to maybe change my mind on it. I had nothing else to say as Cohl was getting back in his truck. I told Mike thanks for bringing Cohl out now instead of half way through our project as he really showed his true colors. I said thanks but you lost an entire build because of a pool filter. Sad, but I am glad that no money was wasted here. read more
