We made reservations, but it didn't help us any as they kept seating people before us who didn't have reservations, so that wasn't a good way to start. The place was half empty, gloomy/dark, but our server was nice and personable which helped. Service was a bit slower/drawn out than what we are used to. Food was okay/good and pricey, but nothing was worth returning for. Food was also not hot; it was lukewarm at best. Friend's prime rib was cold. Salads were uninspired. First time here in years. It used to be a favorite we came to for celebrations when we were staying in the area. We had a special win today so we thought we'd revisit Thunderbay to see if we enjoyed it as much. And we did! The Northwoods ambiance is still welcoming especially if you are missing the actual north woods. We both had Salmon Salad with goat cheese croutons, a favorite of ours from the past. It was still as delicious as remembered. Our waiter was very prompt in bringing us some rustic bread followed by a glass of a nice Riesling and, for my husband, a bottle of Guinness. We had the skillet cookie, warm from the oven and topped with ice cream and drizzled fudge sauce, for a celebratory dessert. Totally enjoyed our evening. Stop by if you was a quiet dinner and a place to converse. And, that has an interesting, but not too out there menu as well. read more

Very disappointing dining experience. Restaurant was clearly under staffed with several tables complaining and waiting for service. When seated we had to wait almost 20 minutes before our server appeared. Another long wait before our meal arrived. Most of the food was okay except for a Salmon order that was undercooked and had to be returned. By the time it was recooked everyone else had finished their meal. We came to this restaurant to celebrate a birthday but the poor service really put a damper on our evening. We thought Thunder Bay would provide an experience worthy of their pricing but we left with plans to never return. This place has really gone downhill. The peeling paint on their entrance should have warned us to turn around and go somewhere else. I wish I had consulted Yelp before coming. It appears there are several other customers who have had similar experiences. I see the owner has replied with apologies but nothing has been done to correct the situation. This is definitely an example of poor management. They need a good ass chewing from Gordon Ramsey. read more

We just visited for Mother's Day, and it was a very disappointing experience. They were only serving their buffet, which was fine as we had heard good things about their food. As soon as we got to the buffet, we noticed all the plates were wet as if they were just out of the dishwasher. However, they were not hot and had a weird smell to them. We tried to wipe off the water and were greeted with smeared chocolate on the bottoms of the plate. There were several like this, so it's not clear if they mixed dirty and clean plates or just did not clean them properly. My boyfriend went to speak to a woman we assume was a manager. She was very rude and basically told him to deal with it as they were busy. Not only was this not true as there were more staff than customers, it seems completely unacceptable to think anyone should be fine using a dirty plate. We managed to find some clean plates, but it was hard to enjoy the food at that point. It was pretty average and not worth the $38 price. I do not like to give bad reviews as I know it is a hard time and every business can have a bad day. I can overlook bad food or service, but I think clean plates should be the minimal standards. If this is not a concern to management, I am worried about what other health code violations may be happening. read more

Dear Yelpers, This restaurant is great, it has a plethora of seating options. I asked for a comfy booth. Instead, I got even better; a lounge style chair with a dining table! My husband had the chubby cut sirloin steak with baked potato and a side salad. They serve all of their steaks medium rare and if you want them to put it back on the grill for you after trying it, they will. My husband found his perfect and very tasty. I had the chicken bacon brussels Alfredo, with a side salad and it was very good. The Alfredo sauce was good and the brussels sprouts were sliced and I love them mixed into the noodles. The chicken was very flavorful. I didn't notice the bacon but the dish was so tasty I didn't miss it. There is grated Parmesan on every table along with olive oil. The side salads were good as well. The restaurant was very busy and we had a 25 minute wait so we sat at the bar and had a glass of wine. They do not serve food at the bar, and the bartenders were extremely busy. We had a great time. Our server was a delight,very accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu. A bit pricey but portions are generous and you certainly won't leave hungry. The beef Wellington filet is highly recommended. We also had chosen Alfredo, calamari,bouillabaisse, clam chowder, Parmesan crusted steak, and bison. All were delicious and prepared to order. Unfortunately we skipped dessert as we were full but the offerings looked very good. The interior is very "midwestern lodge" and comfortable. The food was absolutely great. Cheese stuffed mushroom caps, 4 on order, large and hot. Bison meatloaf was outstanding, large slab and only ding would be it could've used more mushrooms (3?) and brown gravy. Potatoes were slightly above average and green beans were plain but good with a little salt and pepper added. Ribeye was nice cut and cooked perfect, crispy seasoned fries pretty decent. Nice serving sizes, including the salads. Very large place, extremely nicely decorated and clean. Server was polite but nothing spectacular. Food and ambiance make it a must stop. read more

If you scroll through the reviews, you'll notice that the scores are all over the place. Which leads me to believe that there is a training and/or consistency problem. The interior is very inviting, , kind of like a mountain lodge. It felt like a high end restaurant. The bread and salads were good but my entree and the sides were very bad. The Cajun ribeye was so incredibly salty that after 1 bite I quit. The grilled Brussel's sprouts were too sweet and the baked potato would've been OK - had they given me real butter! Instead, I got a little container of whipped margarine that they had salted to fool your taste buds. My wife liked her Salmon but her sides were not good either, especially the couscous which was a gelatinous mess. Our server, who was very good, noticed that I hadn't eaten much of my food and asked why. I told her and she had it removed from the bill. My intent for writing a low-scoring review is not for revenge but to alert potential diners what they may encounter. You could take your chances but two meals will cost you over $70 so hopefully you'll visit when they have one of their better kitchen teams in place. Their food quality is not worth the money. The management was awful. And rude. Our plates were never bussed. See photos after meal. Orders were incorrect. Water was not refilled. They did not take our orders for over 45 minutes. Food took an hour and a half to come out of the kitchen. No coffee was offered. No servers came to check on us after the dinner plates were served. A gluten free meal was served with a regular bun. ( for those that aren't familiar with being gluten free , our guest could have become seriously ill if she didn't notice it was wrong). Stay away. This was quite possibly the worst restaurant we have ever eaten at. Service was terrible, we waited waaaaaay too long for service and food and when we got it, it was terrible. Calamari was so gross I spit it back out, and the fish & chips were soggy and inedible, didn't eat it, couldn't even eat the salad. We were driving from Chicago back home to Cedar Rapids and I checked out which restaurants were close to I-80. We saw this one and checked the menu seeing that they have a gluten sensitive menu (for me) and jambalaya / Cajun food (for my husband). It's a Sunday early evening and when we arrived, there were not a lot of cars in the parking lot. We asked ourselves, should we still go in? Where are the cars? Why is it so empty? We decided just to try it and wow!, am I glad we did! The waitress was immediately attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. She guided us on menu choices and was quick to respond. The salmon salad is one of the best I've ever eaten! Perfectly cooked with delicious whipped goat cheese on the side! My husband got the blackened chicken jambalaya with a very generous side of Caesar salad. He loved the flavor! They are reasonably priced, great food, and lovely decor inside. Worst $35 ever spent...EVER! We waited approximately 20 minutes for our "server" only to be serviced by an unwelcoming fill in who we believe was a manager named Aaron. Food arrived about 40 minutes later, mind you there were literally only 3 other tables of patrons! Crab cakes were hot but the huge clump of "mashed potatoes" were OLD and COLD! Asparagus was overcooked, limp and also cold. We sent those back so Aaron comes over with a plate so that I could eat my crab cakes while they remade the potatoes and asparagus. So now my lobster hollandaise sauce, which is for the crab cakes, is still on the plate with the cold veggies that are being returned to the kitchen. My family and I love eating here and have been coming here for years. This past weekend we had the lovely opportunity to have dinner here. The place is very rustic looking with wood paneling on the walls. Due to the new covid pandemic, all the diners were seated every other table. Our poor waitress (Becky) had the whole room to herself, but she did a great job. A nice warm bread basket is brought as you sit down and has a famous butter. The menu is single sided and has lots of options. Drink: rose sangria with fresh strawberries Dinner: bison meatloaf that had semi sweet demi-glace, grilled mushrooms, grilled green beans, and red skin masked potatoes. I came here thanks to Yelp and the (as i was told) very old online menu on here. They honored my request to build the sandwich with what was on hand. It was very good. Their homemade fries are awesome. This was my ONLY chance to ever get to eat here. Had they not honored the online menu I would have walked and left a 1 star review. BTW: Dear owners, love the ambiance of the restaurant. BUT, I sat at a booth with a black table. The paint is very sticky. No amount of cleaning will fix that. No one got drunk though because they didn't send the servers in to allow us to order more drinks before they brought the food out (meaning we had 2-3 drinks the whole evening). The food was not Thunder Bay quality, at all. The Pasta was burnt around the edges. The fish was dry. I wonder if these were big frozen trays they just reheated. Regardless, I expected it to be something off their menu on some level, but it was not. It was like basic wedding banquet fare from a poor quality caterer. To top it off, the manager ran into my boyfriend and asked HIM about the food. My BF was a guest. Disappointed. Ordered "jumbo" crab cakes with crunchy cole slaw and Remoulade. Hubby had _all you can eat_ fish fry. The crab cakes were thin and tiny, more bread crumb than anything. The thousand island like sauce was so scarce, it wouldn't have been enough for even one of those crab pucks. (Puck is misleading- that would imply a certain thickness). The cole slaw was completely limp/ had some completely limp lettuce in it/ probably made yesterday or this morning. Crunchy?- not even close. No taste to it either. My husband had the "regular" mayo cole slaw with his fish fry. That would have been way better than what was served with my crab things. Husband's fish fry was average. BUT the waiter never did come back to ask if he wanted more???? Waiter was less than enthused to be there. A disappointing night out. And this is rated as Davenport's #5 restaurant?!? One road trip stopped in Davenport IA to get some rest and stopped in. At first glance good ambiance, we were seated quickly as the restaurant was semi busy. Our waiter was at our table in no time taking care of us. I ordered the walleye, pan fried and it was delicious along with the veggies and grilled cut Potatoes. The filet was large and meaty as it should be, no fake walleye here, it is the real deal!Highly recommend! My wife had the salmon fresco and it too was very good along with the grilled veggies! She's very picky when it comes to her salmon, and there was nothing left;-) The waiter and staff were very attentive but not bothersome. Nice place. Clean, good ambiance - like a ski lodge or hunting lodge - but more upscale than the hunting lodge. Good choices for appetizers, salads, dinners. We had the beer cheese curds which you'd think you were in Wisconsin instead of Iowa. About a half-dozen choices of salad; the ones we got - vegetables were fresh; portion size was middle of the road - great by us. The bison meatloaf was unusual; one of us got it - and it was great! They tend toward the "fancier" side vs. the "standard" with things like arugula, goat cheese, creative sauces - yet you can get the standard as well. The food is very good; not what you'd get in a fancy 5-star restaurant, but much better than a typical "grille". Like the place. Great looking decor, friendly bartender but my meal was very average. French Onion soup was not bad but nothing to get real excited about. The real let down was my main course. I tried the Drunken Sirloin Tips. When they came they looked great! Perfectly melted provolone and onions on top of a average sized portion of steak tips. Unfortunately the curtains did not make the drapes. The meat was warm at best and was pretty much tasteless. What flavor they did have was kind of black peppery. As for the "drunken" part, I think it was missing! Maybe it was just a bad night, but there is no way I'd order this again. I was one of 11 adults and 4 children, and the amount of food was enough to feed us and probably a bunch of animals from Africa like elephants, gazelles, zebras, cheetahs, lions, and hyenas. We just moved to Davenport from the Chicagoland area last April. Although we have been to Thunder Bay Grille many years ago when visiting, we decided to order dinner there to celebrate my 60th birthday. From ordering online to pick up and bringing home was so smooth. We ordered extra meals for our daughter's family to drop off and they took the time to separate the meals. What an incredibly nice and professional staff. The dinner was awesome. We were so impressed. My husband had the NY strip and I had the Walleye. It was so good. After eating, our daughter called to thank us for dropping off such a good meal. Our daughter had chicken Alfredo and my son-n-law had the Ribeye. They too were very impressed given they have been living in Davenport for almost 8 years and has never gone to Thunder Bay Grille. Now they are a fan and we can't wait until we feel safe to sit in restaurants. In the meantime, we will definitely order pick up again from Thunder Bay Grille. See you soon. read more

Even though the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxing, the food was not that special. The jambalaya totally missed the mark. It more like Spanish rice with sausage. My wife and I honestly couldn't believe this is their Brunch buffet today, that it could be this bad. No comparison to what it once was. First things first, the food temp should be good, at least warm. Basically none of it was. The brunch opened at 9 a.m. and this was after 10 a.m. A person would expect food to be up to temp by then. Majority of it wasn't, some you could just classify as cold. And at 35 degrees outside this morning it couldn't be affected by that. So food temp was a fail across the board. I was hoping to start by making a nice salad, no luck there. It was all spinach leaves, I couldn't find any regular lettuce anywhere in it. I don't eat spinach, wife loves it and she won't even make a spinach salad. A total fail on that one for us. Didn't find any other vegetables. The pancakes were as thick as roof shingles and cold. The French Toast, at least it had some warmth to it but we couldn't get past the taste. Seemed to be some mixture of nutmeg and some sort of cloves. My wife said it actually burns in the back of her throat. Never found French Toast made with those ingredients....didn't work. The biscuits and gravy, those were some of the most dried out biscuits I've ever found on a buffet. Just about past edible. You could find a few moist bites but as it turned out that didn't really matter. The gravy was very thick and like most other items....cold! Scrambled eggs were ok, but cold. The cheesy hashbrown's.....no thanks. They were cold too. Ham was ok, but cold. The fried chicken was moist and the seasoning seemed good, problem once again was temp, just slightly warm. The prime rib roast was tender and I will give them credit for that. I don't have a problem if prime rib isn't that warm. The problem with it was my wife nor I could taste any seasoning....none. I had a made to order omelet and it was pretty good. All and all we didn't get much food from this at an elevated price for New Year's day ($25 instead of $20). Not sure why, there was nothing extra on it for New Year's day, but whatever. Still would have been ok with the price if it was decent food, which this wasn't not by any stretch of the imagination. Drinks have went up. Just a milk was $3.49 so 3 drinks was about $10.00 bucks. All in all about the best rating I could give this brunch is about 1-2 percent better than a Casino buffet (as bad as they are these days) and that's only because the prime rib was tender and that's about it. And most casino's give those away these days. Somewhat amazing because most menu items they have here have always been good over the years. I don't know, makes us wonder if that has changed to. We might try those again one day, but we'll never take another try on the brunch....no way! read more

Might be a really good place to eat, went in at 5pm today, 5 cars in the parking lot. 10 minutes to sit at the bar, nobody there. Bartender arrives, gives us our drinks and promptly disappears in the back for 20 min. Decided to leave, threw cash on the bar and left. Bumped into a couple people coming in and told them how long we waited, they left as well. Congratulate your staff on losing 4 customers, particularly the bartender. read more

We had a wonderful time here. Our server, Noah, was absolutely wonderful. We happened to come right before a tornado warning and Noah made sure we were safe and comfortable the whole time. Even bringing us tea lights when the power flickered momentarily. The food was good and cooked exactly as expected. The hostess was wonderful. The decor is comfortable if not a chic lodge and makes you want to really sit back and relax...take your time, enjoy a cocktail or two, a bottle of wine with dinner, and time with your partner or just relaxing after traveling for business. The experience, however, was anything but relaxed after the hostess left us, as requested, in the bar area. Our server was also the bartender who took no time to make eye contact and frequently barely touched the table. On at least two occasions, he left our table in mid sentence toward another table or guest at the bar. And it wasn't that busy where taking a few extra moments would have hurt. The French onion soup was okay. It was deep and broth if not a tiny bit too dark and salty. The melted cheese was okay. The presentation was terrible. The saucer plate beneath the cup was loaded with over-splashed soup. And, yes, this did affect my experience since the server dropped the dish in front of me with the same rush that I imagine created the over-splash while delivering it. My husband started with a decent Caesar salad. My entree, which is on the starter menu, was the crab stacks a layered salad of avocado, mango and crab with a horseradish and some other tangy sauce. It was very tasty and although some currently feel that stacks like this are out of date, I was pleased. My husband's chicken jambalaya was licking tender though ample chicken and a jambalaya with on have of a small slice of andouille sausage...disappointing. Thunder Bay Brunch used to be outstanding. We always reserved this for a special occasion. We went do Easter Brunch and it was so disappointing. There was no roast beef, the omelet station was either packed or there was no one staffing it. For $27 per person I ate a piece of pie , some mashed potatoes, eggs and a few shrimps. My youngest daughter said it seemed like all the employees were very unhappy. That was from a 10 year old. It seemed much more like they wanted to pass through as many people as possible rather than making it an excellent food experience for $126 for a family of four. That's quite a bit of money for my family and instead of being a great memory we left with the fact that we don't be coming back. read more

Bison in the meatloaf sandwich didn't have much flavor on its own (I got w/o cheese), but the sour dough was crisply toasted, and the jam & caramelized onion spread was on point. Three of us stopped in for lunch. We were promptly seated and the server got our drink orders and left us to look over the varied lunch menu. Two of us opted for the Salmon BLT, which was a very nice piece of salmon, prepared correctly, and served on a tick and tasty toast with a nice garlic mayo. I got the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo, and went with the chicken tortilla soup, which was a nice combination of veggies and a hearty, slightly spiced flavor. My wife got the chicken salad sandwich, which was nicely flavored and very creamy, so not much of a lo-cal option, but pretty tasty. I find that insulting in that they could have said there was a 2 hour wait to be seated and they close at 8 and would not be able to accommodate you.
