Walking into The J Bar felt more like walking into a trendy spot in downtown Chicago than in Davenport, Iowa. The decor is gorgeous and inviting. They have a lovely outdoor seating area to enjoy when the weather permits. They have a very nice selection of wines and interesting mixology offerings. I highly recommend the Old Fashioned. Two of us shared the steak with gorgonzola and it was a perfect size to leave satisfied and not stuffed. The steak was way overdone from the medium rare ordered and it was little tough. I was also surprised that though the server knew we were sharing the entree, she didn't bring a second steak knife or plate. Luckily there were little appetizer plates left on the table. First of all, thank you Holiday Inn for bringing back great hotel restaurants and bars. Now, they exist in really high end hotels but it isn't often that we can say WOW at a Holiday Inn restaurant, but The J Bar inspires just that. This is a comfortable, contemporary space that could easily be a great place to have your Friday or Saturday night meal & cocktail if you weren't staying at the hotel. The servers are professional and knowledgeable, the bar tenders mix really well crafted drinks (my husband enjoyed an excellent Long Island Iced Tea and I a Negroni). My Cobb salad for dinner was really fresh and delicious if not a tiny bit overdressed for my taste. My husband's BLT was fantastic, if not classic with a spin using bacon marmalade. And I can't say more about the creamy, rich, just perfect Mac and cheese. The price point does not disappoint, either. There are several lame and flavorless chains you could visit while in Davenport, IA. I recommend J Bar. Treat yourself. read more

She had waited on us pre-Covid. She was good at making recommendations but once dinner was over, we waited for the check and decided to leave cash instead of waiting forever. Disappointed. My girlfriend and I went to The J Bar on a Tuesday evening for dinner. We were quickly greeted and seated in the dining room. Our table was in a far back corner and it was fairly busy. Immediately we noticed how uncomfortably hot our table location felt. The atmosphere overall was sophisticated and modern. Our server greeted us right away and introduced us to the menu, explaining that the concept was smaller portions and plates designed for sharing. The service was timely and friendly. We ordered beers and were impressed with the selection of a dozen beers on draft. For an appetizer we ordered the Spicy Sczechuan Lettuce Wraps which came three to an order. We thought this was strange because most tables usually have 2 or 4 people. With 2 you either share or fight over the third and with 4 someone gets left out. The wrap was good and I would recommend it. For our entrees I ordered the Gaucho Steak and my companion ordered the Saltimbocca. I ordered the steak medium but it came rare and cold. The outside of the steak had a good sear but the center was cold to the touch. The side of mushrooms were good and the fries were fries. The Saltimbocca is a chicken dish with potatoes and prosciutto. The chicken had a very peculiar texture. Imagine biting through fresh mozzarella. Very spongy and squishy. It tasted like chicken but did not feel like chicken. The menu said it came with with red potatoes but they were russet potatoes. The flavor of the steak was mediocre; my dish was just ok - not great, not bad. The flavor of the chicken was good, just had to enjoy with the weird texture. It seemed like the chicken had been pre-cooked and frozen to create that texture. In summary, we were excited to try the new J Bar, but we don't think it lived up to our expectations. I got the impression of disorganized more than busy, as we were seated immediately when we arrived. My girlfriend ordered the 50/50 burger (half burger, half bacon) and it was overcooked and honestly pretty bland. The kettle chips were soggy and uninteresting. I had the gaucho steak and it was room temperature when served. It was undercooked, but that's okay by me. The house cut fries were okay, but not very interesting and needed more sea salt. Overall. My Caesar salad was generous, cold and delicious, and my steak entree was well cooked. The "tomato & arugula" salad actually was tomatoes, marinated fennel and asparaus--delicious but as a kitchen it's important to disclose all ingredients and not have the menu be different than what's delivered. They were on point with bottomless mimosas! Now to the reasons why I won't get back. We went there for my birthday brunch. Our drink order was taken rather quickly as well as our food order. However, when we received our food order, everything was messed up. One of our party mates got their brunch Chicken Sausage and Hash, guess what the kitchen forgot? The chicken sausage. The kitchen remade the entire order but it took them a good 15-20 minutes to get it to our friend. The servers gave my son a child's burger when he ordered the 50/50 being a teenager. Oh it gets better, two of us order their breakfast flatbread, which featured smoke Gouda cheese (the only reason I ordered it in the first place). Our meals did have that item on it at all. We brought this up to our server and we were only discounted one of them items. Then they forgot to place an order for the 1-1/2 year old at our table. Can you imagine what's it like to be 1-1/2 and be waiting for food because you're hungry and you have no way to say "where's my food? I'm so hungry!" Then see everyone get food but you? Yeah. Luckily this little girl has a great mom and asked the server "where's hers?" Of course we had to wait another 15/20 for a baby's burger. Then my friend was charged for a side of RANCH which she never received and we had to find a bartender to get us a bottle of hot sauce. Oh and the cheesy hash browns? Skip those. Seriously, no flavor at all same for the pork tenderloin. This is IOWA, how can you mess up a pork tenderloin?!? Here's a tip, if you want service that is subpar, food that is missing ingredients, and you like to hunt down for simple items you ask for when ordering, go to The J Bar! Worst service ever. Came here once before and by the time we all got our food, it was cold. That was when they had just opened, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried them again. I ordered the same drink twice in a row, and from one bar tender to the next it looked and tasted completely different. We'd seen several people who came in after us put their names in and get seated before us, so we asked the hostess about when we would get seated, she said there was another group ahead of us but she couldn't find them and was looking for them (???). About ten min later we were told our table was ready (one that I had seen that had been sitting empty for quite awhile). When we asked the bartender if we could carry over our tab to our table he told us we could, but he "preferred it if we didn't." This came from the bartender who made me the horrible drink. We thought it was pretty tacky. Once we got seated we ordered avocado egg rolls and another appetizer. The waitress came back and told us they were out of the second appetizer so we chose a different one. Our egg rolls came out quickly, but we were not impressed. The outside was burnt and inside was doughy. Our waitress kind of gave us attitude when we told her about them - I should note: she didn't come back to ask how they were, we had to flag her down to tell her. She offered to remake them but we declined. We'd had enough. We politely told her that once our other appetizer came we would like the check. She quickly returned with our check, no appetizer. That came about 5 min later- I've never been to a restaurant where the appetizers didn't all come out at the same time. We thought it was rude to bring the check before our second appetizer came out too. There were no apologies for the wait time or bad appetizer.
