First time making pottery with Bella! It was such a therapeutic and fun experience. The studio has a really chill vibe and is beautifully designed -- definitely an aesthetic space to create in. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to pick up a new hobby or just try something creative and relaxing.

Love that you can take a single class here to try pottery out. The class I took had about 20 people (maybe a bit less) and broken up into 2 sections. Wheel and hand making. Each instructor was very great at explaining, especially during the wheel part. After you're done, you choose the color for your item to be painted. The studio to paint and glaze for you. Definitely try to get to the area early before class starts and look for parking on the street. I parked in the public lot behind the studio and it cost me $20. I would've looked elsewhere but I was late for the class.

i think these pieces were for sale!

i did the one-time lesson with my friend (we had no prior experience) and we absolutely loved it! for $90/person, you get like 1.5 hr in the studio to make two bowls (with instruction), you learn how to clean the stuff, and you get to choose the colors of the bowls you make! also, would recommend getting there early bc we were about 5 min late (LA traffic) and they were very punctual with starting on time. our instructor's name was peiwen and she was super chill and very hands-on when you requested it. one sad part is that it takes about 4-6 weeks to get ur creations back but that's really not an issue bc time passes anyway. would also recommend u don't wear dark colors bc the clay is very light and guaranteed to get on you! i think it'll wash off tho so no biggie. regardless, a 10/10 experience and i'd highly recommend it as a fun little thing to do. also the studio is so pretty and the vibes are super calm and relaxing!

We got gift cards for a beginner class and it was so much fun! Bella was an amazing teacher and explained everything so clearly and was able to support as needed and fix things in an encouraging way. You make two bowls and despite the general shape there is room to make them your own. They handle glazing (choice of three colors) and firing and you pick up in about a month. Would recommend this class we liked it more than ones we've done at other studios!

The 2nd bowl... much better than the first!

Anyone who starts pottery on the wheel is always a little nervous and anxious. But at Throw Clay LA the instructors (and in this case we had a wonderful instructor who has been teaching for almost 10 years now - Amber) takes you through a lot of different kinds of techniques and breaks down the steps in a way that gives you more confidence working with clay no matter what your skill level. This is only the second time I've taken a pottery wheel class and I could see some of the differences and techniques that Amber showed us really helped! I also like that she was able to go around and really provide great feedback on how we were doing whether or not we needed to apply more pressure in some places or if our piece was ready to fall apart, she was there to guide us every step of the way. By the time I made my second piece I felt a lot more confident to be able to create a bowl that was more structurally sound and much more different than what my first bowl looked like. In total, we had nine people in our class - this is a great activity if you've got a couple of hours on a weekend and want to spend some quality time with friends being able to work at the wheel is relaxing and maybe sometimes challenging you in ways that, you're not used to in your day job but by the end of it you'll feel really accomplished. You'll be able to pick the glazes that you want on your pieces they currently have as of the time of this review for different colors that you can choose and then once they are completed, you'll get a notification via email on how to pick up your piece as well as the timeline at the time of this class, they said it would take 3 to 5 weeks to fire up glaze and finish each piece. The environment is really open and industrial. I felt very comfortable being able to work my clay throw clay. Parking is either street parking or paid lot parking down the street. I didn't have any problems parking at a lot on a Saturday but then street parking looked to be a little bit more crowded so make sure you a lot sometimes to find parking to be able to get to your class on time.

I had a great time taking a one-time class with a group of 7 friends on a Sunday morning. Our instructor Bella was so knowledgeable, patient and kind. We all had a great time throwing clay on the pottery wheel, which most of us had no experience in. We had an amazing time making 2 bowls each and we are so excited to pick them up in a few weeks. On Sunday, I was able to find free metered parking on the street behind the studio. I am so happy I did this, I would love to take more classes in the future and would highly recommend this one-time class!

Throw Clay LA is such a fun spot when you're looking for something different to do in LA. It's affordable, and the experience of learning pottery with friends or a group is amazing. Our instructor was super patient and made the class fun and easy to follow. We came back two weeks later to pick up our pieces, and they turned out great. 10/10 would recommend!

My son treated me to a one-time pottery wheel class as a birthday gift, and it was a perfect way to spend time together! Our instructor was clear and patient, and gave us enough time to finish our tasks. It was a great way to learn to appreciate pottery-making and to perhaps whet our appetite for future classes. Our bowls were ready before they were predicted to be, so that was nice.

I started coming to this studio earlier this year. The studio is beautiful and everyone there is wonderful and friendly. But what had kept me coming back is Ambar's classes! She's incredible! Kind and so patient. She really goes above and beyond for every student until they get it! I highly recommend the 6 week classes if this is a hobby you want to get into and especially with Ambar!

This was my first thing learning to use a pottery wheel and hand molding. It was a great experience. I went with work for a unit retreat. So my co worker arranged for a 2 hour class in which we were able to learn to use the wheel and then we also made another bowl molding the clay. Our instructors were great and so patient with us. We had about 16 people in our group so they split us into two group and so half of us started on the wheel and other group did the clay molding method and then after an hour we switched so we both got a chance to learn both. I really enjoyed our instructors. Each of our instructors were very good at explaining the techniques that they were teaching. Using the wheel can get a little messy but they had aprons for us to us so that was nice. I really recommend Throw Clay LA and I would really consider coming back for their classes.

My wife and I took a one-time wheel throwing class. The class size was 8 people to 1 instructor which was nice and safe. Our teacher today was Bailey and she made the class easy going and enjoyable for first timers. Conceptually, it wasn't too difficult. Feeling the clay in my hands was rather soothing and watching everyone's bowl come together differently was very cool. In two hours time we made two bowls. I can't wait to see how they turn out with the glaze we chose for them. I would recommend this business to all who may be interested in picking up a new hobby, team event, birthday, or just an outing with friends to pass by some time. It got me wanting to continue and do more courses to see what else I can make.

Wow it was our first time and we are already coming back next Friday! We had Ellie as our teacher and she was so lovely. She was so knowledgeable, sweet and helpful with direction and assistance when we needed it. You can tell she loved her job and the art of clay throwing. The studio was well organized, clean and a very welcoming space. I like that they had us in a semi-private area in the front of the garage so we could focus on the class. We started out with very detailed instructions and watched Ellie spin a bowl from start to finish. Then the fun part.. we got to make ours! Ellie went around and helped those who needed it. After you're done you get to choose from 4 colors (we both chose black). They make pickup easy by having you scan a QR code and enter in your contact information online. Cleanup was very easy! I'd definitely recommend this place for a cute date night or girls night out! It was fun being creative together and just laughing through our mistakes. Ellie made sure we enjoyed the process even if our final result didn't come out the way we planned and just made the entire experience so fun!

Took our bestie here as a surprise bday gift and it was so much fun and relaxing! We took the One-Time wheel class which gives you the opportunity to make two bowls. It was my first time making pottery and our instructor, Amber was so insightful and detailed. She made the class really enjoyable and easygoing. The bowls we made turned out so cute after the glaze!! Can't wait to use them. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a fun group activity or just trying to start a new hobby!

Ask the Community - Throw Clay LA

    What's the parking situation?

Low cost metered parking on the street is usually easy to find.

I'd like to get a gift card for the intro class as a Christmas gift . What is the expiration date on the gift cards in general?

No expiration date. You paid for the gift, it will be good anytime.

Is there any specials for downtown residents?

We keep our pricing competitive so everyone ends up paying the same price. No coupons to be missing out on.

    Do you sell glazes too?

Laura, glazes are included along with firing in our classes, courses and memberships. We do not sell them separately though. I hope that answers your question. Galyn Metcalf, Office Manager

To add to this, we needed to be buzzed in so we could enter the premise. Once we were inside, the ambiance changed completely and there were a couple of IG worthy spots to take pictures while checking in. We opted for the spinning art experience since my daughter is too young to partake in the more elaborate ones. Originally, we booked for 4 people but one person got sick so we asked if we could transfer the funds for that person for another experience since there are no refunds. Luckily, was able to contact them the day before and added the bunny paint pour over experience. Ozzie was our guide and he was super kind and gentle with my daughter. We were instructed to pick 5 colors and then we donned our plastic bootie covers, apron and gloves. We entered our designated art room and was blown away by all the colors on the wall. There was even a tire swing which my daughter was all about. The spinning art experience was a lot of fun and I enjoyed seeing my daughter embrace the paint. I think her favorite part was when she had free rein to paint all over the walls. Overall, we had a great time. Only down side is that it does go by super quick and is quite an expensive experience for one hour. However, we get to have a treasured memento which is ready for pick up about 5 days afterwards and we did have a great time. That being said, #noragrats!

At the door it's locked and you call the number to be let upstairs. The building itself looks tiny outside, but wow when you enter it's several stories tall and extremely spacious. My first impression entering the studio was that the space was beautiful, clean, and radiating with positive energy. There are these really comfortable gigantic sized mats to sit on, and it's also nice that they have spray cleaner to clean them before putting back after use. I've definitely enjoyed shows where I've seen Shibari and arrived excited to learn. Our whole group ended up being from Renaissance Club which was pretty cool, and Andrew and Melissa were so friendly and down to earth that they created such a welcoming environment for learning. Everything was explained so well that it was easy to follow, and ample time for practicing each technique that we were learning. Everything we learned I was able to practice on myself using my lower body, but you can also practice on others if you make friends in class or go with friends! We learned a variety of techniques with the rope and for some reason my absolute favorite was the one which you take the end loop and you turn it with your fingers and suddenly you've made an easy cuff! It's so fun. I don't remember the lingo, however after the class they send an awesome email full of resources which includes lingo with definitions! With some studying and practice, it's going to become second nature! I am looking forward to taking more classes with Dark Mask Studio and learning more techniques soon.
