In all the years I have owned my Rolex, I was always used to the remarks about it being a fine piece but you needed another watch to tell the correct time. And it deserved the reputation as it always ran 2-3 minutes slow every few weeks. Then I had it serviced by David several months ago and I have yet to adjust the time. Really. This business is EXACTLY how a business should be run! Their customer service is great, they quote their service prices accurately, and the turnaround was actually faster than they originally planned! I will DEFINITELY be back :) I actually found Throckmorton's through Yelp, and decided to try it because of all the great reviews. And, it was close enough to my office to drop my watch off at lunch. I brought in a Citizen watch that is about 2 years old that just needed a routine cleaning (I hadn't had it cleaned since it was purchased). Once I arrived, I was immediately greeted by a friendly older woman. I asked if they did jewelry cleaning, she said yes and asked to see my watch. She explained that the cleaning would take a few days, and be around $25, but that they would not clean the face for fear that they would loosen the Swarovski (sp?) crystals around the face. I said that I didn't mind, the band itself just needed some cleaning. I left the watch with her, gave her my phone number and left. Later that day, she called and wanted to let me know that I was missing one of the tiny crystals around the face, which I hadn't noticed (but honestly, who studies their watch every single day?). I told her not to worry, and she said that she'd call when the watch was ready in a few days. THE NEXT DAY she called and said that the watch was ready to be picked up! I told her when I would be back to pick it up, and sure enough, the price was $25 (plus tax) and the watch looked really REALLY clean, I was very impressed. This place is excellent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone needing jewelry repair or cleaning. The husband and wife that run this business do everything right; they are honest with their customers, do great work and are very timely about the turnaround on their service. I had my ring sized here because of all the other great reviews they received on Yelp. Sadly only a couple weeks later one of the stones fell out and was never to be found again! I brought the ring in for them to take a look at it and they so kindly agreed to replace the stone at no cost to me. The man who helped us out said that he didn't think the stone fell out because of the resizing they had done but that it was most likely a manufacturing issue. i inherited an expensive 18 karat watch of the 1950 era. Last time I had it cleaned was on the east coast by the manufacturer. I had it cleaned here at Throckmorton and was charged $275.00 for a cleaning. Seems highly expensive but than again it was recommended that i have it done annually. This is the only place in the word where I feel save sending my Rolex and my Omega for service or repair. You might have to wait a few days or weeks depending on the type of watch and the repairs needed, but the owner will always be honest and upfront in telling you how long you will have to wait. But the wait is totally worth it, you will get your watch in great condition and so accurate you won't believe it. My 50 year old Omega is losing less than one minute per week!!! This is amazing for a 50 year old watch. I never write reviews but when I do is because someone has provided outstanding service and Throckmorton is as good as it gets when you need to service a valuable watch. By the way I moved from Austin to Chicago two years ago and I still service my watch with them. I mail them the watch, and a few weeks later they send it back to my house. My wife had two rings she wanted repaired. One is a cheap but sturdy and well used ring that came apart while at top golf. She took them to a jewelry repair shop at Barton creek mall, and literally while waiting for some info, she looked up their reviews and saw how bad they were and walked out immediately. She then saw the high review rating on Yelp for this one and decided to go. We went in and the jeweler, who was super nice, looked at one ring and said she felt she could tighten it on the spot. She did successfully and didn't charge. The other company was going to charge $80. We left the other ring there to be repaired. Just great customer service and very friendly. She didn't have to tighten it on the spot but She did and my wife walked out with her favorite ring fully repaired. read more

As a small town girl I am always on the search for small town customer service which is near impossible in this city, however Throckmorton's exceeded my expectations. I was greeted with smiles and the advice I was seeking. I brought my current diamond in to be retrofitted into a "new to me" setting. The result is beyond beautiful. I can not take my eyes off of it, and I don't expect to unless I decide to go up in carat size in the future. I found this shop online and they have serviced 3 of my rings. Very expensive engagement ring, to cheap but family heirloom rings for sizing and cleaning. Every time the ring is better than it was before, the shop staff are SUPER friendly, like treat you like family members friendly. Professional service and easy to work with. These folks are amazing. I brought in watch that had a broken pin that connected the bracelet to the watch and they fixed it within a minute of less. On top of that I went to pay and he wouldn't let me because it was an easy fix, telling me "not to worry about it." I brought an Omega Speedmaster Professional to David at Throckmorton's that I bought pre-owned and in need of service. The watch is twenty years old, and when I brought it in it ran about a minute fast per day and the chronograph suffered from stutter that is pretty common for the movement but nonetheless annoying. David took a look at it and estimated that it had never been serviced. He recommended a full service and guaranteed that I would be pleased with the result. He also let me know up front that business is very good for him right now and he does all of the watchmaking himself. He estimated that I wouldn't see my watch for three weeks. It took him closer to three and a half which is a long time to look at pictures of your watch on the internet wishing you had it back. I picked the watch up yesterday and I'm thrilled with David's work. He took considerable time with me explaining how the regulation is evaluated and that he was able to get my watch much better than the Omega standard. He also fully explained the cause of the chronograph stutter and what adjustments were made to eliminate it. Indeed the watch now keeps very good time and the chronograph's motion is nice and consistent. He also replaced the crystal with an OEM part despite the fact that the old one was actually in pretty good shape. (He returned the old one in case I should ever need a spare) David's fee for the service was not cheap, however it was completely in line with what one expects to pay for full service on a mechanical chronograph movement, and I paid exactly what he quoted when I dropped the watch off. The level of customer service, attention to detail, and the 1 year warranty make it money well spent. If you have a mechanical watch in need of service in the Austin area, take it to Throckmorton's. You may not get next-day service, but you will be able to rest easy knowing that your fine time piece is well cared for. read more

As an update to my previous review, I wanted to note how the ring resizing went. My wedding band has become loose on my finger due to some recent weight loss I've managed. Apparently my fingers lost weight too. Who knew? Any way, lost the ring, freaked out, found it again, and looked for a way to resize it. I opted for Throck's because they could do the work onsite, which appealed to me a bit more than the idea of them shipping it off to be done. Also, the staff was helpful in describing the different processes used to resize different types of metals. Even though I had a metal that was a little more difficult to work with, they were able to make the neccessary changes to my palladium ring, and do it without removing metal or weakening the integrity of the ring. It helped that we didn't have to size it down much, which would have required more complicated measures. The results were great. The fit was improved, there was no damage, and they even polished it up for me so it looked like new. Once again, I was given a very straight story on what the options were, what to expect, and given a reasonable price. I also like the fact that if they can't do what you want, you'll know that too, because they will tell you. The service and results with the ring resizing were as solid as with the watch maintenance from my previous review. So overall, the integrity of the service here really sets it apart, and the skill and quality of the work is top notch. I can't find any reason to select another place for repair unless it's one of the rare things that this outfit is not equipped or capable of doing. read more

I went to Throckmorton's because I needed 2 rings and a necklace repaired. I had had one of the rings worked on before by another jeweler in Austin, and the repair cost over $20. I went in and right away had it fixed right in front of my eyes for no cost! (It was a simple repair.) I came in a few days later to pick up the two other pieces, but one of them had not been fixed. I was told it would be 5 or 10 minutes, but it was completed in faster than five. In the meantime, I checked out their collection of watches and stones. In the end, they knocked a few dollars off the total bill, and I walked out of there with jewelry that looked like new, and done for way less than I expected to pay. Great service!! David is an amazing gentleman. I had to have a Rolex looked at by an expert to confirm that it was authentic and in good shape. I took it to David and he did a great job explaining to me all the nuisances of the watch and answering my questions. Unbelievably great customer service...a rare find in most businesses these days. I took in my diamond ring as the prong was bent back and needed repair. I followed up later that week as I hadn't heard anything back from them re: status of repair. The owner apologized profusely (though I really wasn't that upset), stayed after business hours so I could pick up my ring before the long weekend (they had just officially closed), and discounted the cost of the service (I think because he wasn't able to straighten the ring to its original condition. When I needed 3 very special rings resized no matter how many people I asked, no one knew any. So, I cam to yelp and found Throckmorton's. There were so many great reviews that I decided to take my rings there. I am so glad that I did. The workmanship is wonderful and the prices reasonable. My mother's ring - which can't be replaced needed some prongs fixed. I saw it once it was mentioned but didn't before. Thank God they do a thorough examination before you leave the shop. They even had all 3 ready for me, within a week, so that I could wear them when I traveled back home. I picked them up just as they were closing and unlike many places, they spent time just talking with me, about Austin, family and their beautiful salt water aquarium. I think I did best choice is resizing my new diamond ring here! Because of my heavy crown, the lazy suggested me add two bumps inside circle. Result shows it is amazing! No need too tight ring and no big rotation. And the cost of resizing and adding bump is very nice. Really appreciate! read more

They repaired a diamond anniversary band that I had bent so badly on my finger I had to have it cut off (the ring, not the finger!). It took them less than 24 hours and the ring looks brand new, you can't see that it was ever damaged. The repair included reshaping, welding and cleaning and the total cost was just under $35. I went in for a simple ring re-sizing. The woman who helped me initially was very helpful in letting me know how the ring would fit differently with the kind of metal/shape of my ring. I went in, thinking I was going to be getting it sized to a 4.75, but I agreed to a 4.5. Got it back in a week or so, and it fits like a dream. The work is absolutely beautiful, and they polished it to look better than it did when I bought it. Every interaction I had with them, (including a call in to check on the progress, which can be kind of pesky to some people), was very pleasant, and I was treated with respect. So many good reviews for good customer service so I just can't understand why a ridiculously unreasonable price for engraving. $20 per item. If you had a set of 4 items, it would cost $120 to engrave it....obviously not worth doing that for something worth less than $100 or more. There are so many online choices now for products that come with free engraving. This is another example of how retail stores need to rethink their pricing and business model to be more in tuned with the declining economy and competitive landscape. I went online and bought what I needed to WITH engraving for every item for free and the total for products and engraving cost me well under $45. $45 would have bought me 2 engravings with Throckmorton's. YIKES!!! They must think we all still make as much as we did 10 years ago! read more
