On Friday, 05-05-15, about 1 AM, my wife rented a car at the Mobile Airport location. The next day, Saturday 05-06-15, she went out to start the car at our property in Loxley., AL (about an hours drive from the airport). The car would not start. It was completely dead. She began calling Thrifty, having only the national number on her rental agreement. The people there said they could not find her rental agreement in the system, so there was nothing they could do and hung up. I called Amex Travel (who had made the reservation), and they got me the number of the rental office at the airport (which the national folks would not give out). They could not find the rental agreement either, but agreed to replace the car. In the meantime I had our roadside assistance club (AMAC) respond and try to start the car. He said a security unit on the car was fried (he'd dealt with this issue before) and would require replacement before the car could be used.
Over 24 hours later, Thrifty had still not sent out a replacement, and when I called them, they in essence said there were no tow trucks available in the whole Mobile metro area, so the had no idea when they would be able to get a car out to my stranded 73 year old wife. They had already ruined the short vacation we had saved months for her to be able to take. She had been hoping to visit friends she would likely never see alive again. Instead, she sat stranded for over 24 hours with Thrifty telling her they could not advise when they would be able to get another car for her. I told her to leave the car where it was, get a ride from a friend, and rent a car from Enterprise (they'll bring it out to you), and Thrifty could pick it up at their convenience. If they try to bill me one penny, I swear to God I will sue them in small claims court for the maximum the law allows. read more
