I rented a car from Dollar on 12/18 -12/21. Several days later I received a notice that I had been charged for a possible windshield crack. I called immediately to find out the details, the corporate center or call center indicated that this was an automated response and it could be a glare in picture or even bird wast. But, they changed my card two day before advising me, then to say it was a possible damage. After being transferred several times and placed on hold for hours, I was told there was nothing t hey could do. I requested proof of damage, an establishment of repair and recites. I was then informed the car was re-rented. The supervisor I eventually got to talk to said they would refund me the amount if they didn't receive proof from the rental agency in 48 hrs. Two days later, I called again only to be told after several lengthy holds and disconnects that they needed more time to investigate. I reminded them of their recorded call saying they would refund me the amount if they couldn't verify the damage in 48 hrs. Of course we were disconnected and when I called back there was no one that could talk to me. A manager would call me as soon as they were available. No one ever returned my call. I did get an email later that day saying that Dollar Car Rental had refunded my account along with an informal apology. read more

I was very nervous considering the other reviewers but I believe people only leave a review when it is poor in these circumstances. We rented almost a brand new car 3000 miles north of mechanical issues. The women at the desk were very pleasant first one was Shawn unsure of the second one's name. Could not reach "customer service" for 3 days to change dropoff location. In fact NEVER reached any customer service after 15 calls. Was given a car that was NOT mechanically sound. Car had 100k miles shook will driving and almost shook off road while braking. I inevitably returned the car from were I rented it and was charged $48 for 4 gallons of gas, when the car had just been topped off, by a desk clerk who never even looked at the car. Went back to the desk and had the charge removed and was told by the clerk that the charge AUTO POPULATED which tells me Dollar is automatically charging people and if they don't pay attention they get ripped off. read more

Worst experience with a car rental agency. My husband and I had reservation for when we landed at airport. Guy working front desk wouldn't give us our rental because my husband did not know his license expired 4 days ago on his birthday. (His mind has been on other things with his mother and brother recently passing). I have a Drivers license not expired and had also used my credit card when making the reservation but he still wouldn't let us have our rental said he had to give it to someone else. Now we're here with a 6 month old baby not having transportation because they are out of rentals. We had to get a Uber where we're going but with it being a rural area we don't have way back to airport. Had no way get around once we got where we're staying. My credit card was still charged from when I initially made reservation and whoever received vehicle was also charged for rental. read more

Plain & simple...Dollar Car Rental refused to return our money after they refused to give us the rental car which we prepaid from a VISA debit card. The company they deal with when a customer prepays is located in Ireland. If you want to talk with a representative about getting a refund you have to provide them with a case# which is obtained by emailing customer service from the website. When we arrived to pick up the rental car from the airport, we were refused because we didn't have a major credit card. My husband asked that his money be refunded, but, like I already stated...you have to obtain a case# before you can even THINK about getting your money back! The email we received after filing the case with customer service basically stated that we were NOT due a refund since we failed to present one of the required documents which they said are stated in the rental conditions. The entire Dollar Car rental disclosure is longer than Webster's dictionary!! They consider failure to provide a major credit card as being a "cancellation" and/or a "no show". I would give them LESS than one star if I were able! These people are nothing but CROOKS and we got SCAMMED!!!!! BEWARE AND TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE!!!!!!!!! read more

Made a reservation a few days before for 7am pick up, arrived a few minutes before 7. At 7, someone came to the counter and said it would be 30 minutes before the car was ready because they had to clean it up. Whats the point in making a reservation if you cannot get the car at the time you need it! read more

DO NOT RENT FROM DOLLAR! Their website is misleading. What the website says is not what you will pay.....try double the amount. Customer service is ridiculous and when I tried to get some info on the payment I made online, they sent to me an outside party....what's up with that?? I will not ever rent a car from Dollar again. Horrible counter service, and customer service. Booked a car online. Wasn't the car I booked when I got there. Tried to upgrade me at a fee. I spent over an hour being transferred around to customer service only to find out they had closed. I tried to cancel the car and go somewhere else, they were going to charge me $45 whether I used the car or not. No one could connect me directly to a manager. Now I am stuck with a rental that won't hold more that one suitcase for 3 people on a 14 hour trip to Virginia. They said I can "try" to switch the car in Montgomery. NEVER will I use this company again not will I recommend it. Too many choice to be treated like this. read more

Avoid this rental company. I had a confirmed reservation that I booked through Priceline. It should have been straightforward once I got the rental counter, but it wasn't. They refused to honor my reservation stating, "we can get you a car but we are retaining cars for the upcoming 4th of July weekend (which was oddly enough 14 days away). We can get you a car but it won't be the same price." That made zero sense to me as I had a contracted reservation. It when I asked how much, it was double the price that I had already paid to Priceline. This arbitrary decision to not honor my reservation is a terrible business decision that earned them the right to never get my business again. When I called Priceline they were very apologetic but couldn't not force them to rent me a car and quickly refunded my money. Easy fix, went online and reserved from another counter (Alamo) and got a larger car for much less than my originally expected price. While I don't think that Dollar is systematically a bad company, I believe the management decision that led to this particular counter to not honor my confirmed reservation is indicative of a business that doesn't not put customers first. read more

Not to recommend, bad experience. a) Slow service and unfriendly. Not familiar at all with international business. b) The guy couldn't find my (prepaid) reservation, so I had to pay again at a much higher rate. Luckily I got reimbursed afterwards. read more

Terrible customer service and terrible cars! The remote key opener on the Chevy Spark they gave me was broken. I thought, no problem, I'll use the actual key. Well that set off the car alarm! I went back inside and the agent came out with me and it happened to him too. His response: Oh no big deal, just put the key in the ignition. So EVERY time I opened to car door I had to race to get the key in the ignition as the car alarm was going off LOUDLY! Embarrassing to say the least! read more

I flew in on the afternoon of April 25th, 2017, after a long overseas flight with connections. The man at the Dollar/Thrifty rental counter in Mobile was excellent. I had one woman and her husband in front of me in line. The woman was yelling at him, using all sorts of profanity, threatening to sue, and behaving like a total lunatic. And it was all over a minor issue, at most. I heard the entire conversation. This Dollar/Thrifty employee kept his cool and stayed professional the entire time. I think he was the manager/supervisor. I wish I could have filmed it, but I don't have a phone with camera. This incident stood out in my mind. The 2 Dollar/Thrifty employees should not have been subjected to this woman and her ravings. My experience was outstanding, after the crazy woman finally left the counter. read more

Car rental is a rip off. They don't advise you of all the taxes and fuel charge if you want to pre pay or if you don't. Some one like my husband who used them for work and in a rush upon the return, they did not confirm that being the gas tank at a 1/4 the fuel charge would be $9.99 per gallon. On a small car like Kia Rio they charged $98 which is a rip off because even in New York or LAX which the gas is still higher they charge less then the $9.99. We had rented a car through Dollar Rental, so we figured...why not. What a huge MISTAKE!!! We picked up the rental in Mobile, Alabama and had to drive an hour and a half to our resort. Within 10 minutes of driving away from the airport, the low pressure in tire light came on and need an oil change was prompted. We should have just returned the car but were exhausted after flying for 10 hours. We stopped and put air in the tires. By the next morning, the back tire was almost flat. Now every time we turned the car on, the light flashed for an oil change. My husband called customer service and was told to exchange the car at the nearest airport. My husband explained that the nearest airport was in Pensacola, an hour away. We were told we would be compensated monetarily. We drove to exchange rental and changed the car. The new car had red paint on the back, but had air in the tires. To compensate us, we got $5 off! What??? $5 off for all of this aggregation! We will NEVER use them again.
