The guys at Thrift King do great work. Rob is honest and knowledgeable. I can't tell you how many times he's talked me out of doing things to my car because he thought it would be a waste of money. He always says, "I'm glad to take your money if you want to give it to me, but I don't think it's necessary." I was referred to Thrift King after having gone to Firestone in two different locations. Firestone screwed up my brakes to a fare-thee-well, and after fighting with them for over a year, I took my car to Rob. He laid out all my options, and then recommended a plan of action that was perfect. They are super busy, because they're honest and reliable. Thrift King was anything but thrifty for my son and daughter-in-law. When the check engine light came on they took their Nissan to Thrift King, where the cause was repeatedly misdiagnosed and the wrong repairs were made so the light came on again after only a few days. They were never offered a refund or credit for the unnecessary services. Hundreds of wasted dollars later, I took the car to my mechanic who finally fixed the problem. This is a small, family run shop. I had a car of interest brought in for a pre-purchase inspection. I called ahead and was given a price and an appointment that they actually kept. The mechanic gave the car a 15-20 minute general inspection on the ground and on the lift and a 5-10 minute test drive around the winding roads of Cold Spring. He was very honest and insightful despite their position with the seller. After itemizing and objectively explaining everything the car needed, the shop owner, who I'll presume to be Harry, even tried phoning his contacts to find a similar car for me. I ultimately passed up the car with their evaluation in mind. $20 is what they charged. I would've thrown a Jackson in the air and ran away giggling if all a City mechanic asked for was $20. read more
