Let me give you a perspective from someone who is NOT a member of "Thousand Trails". They do rent out spots to non members, so when we were looking for camping with some fun stuff to do for our niece and nephew (11 & 12) who we were taking with us, I thought, hey this place looks like there is plenty to keep them busy. So, we decided we didn't mind paying a little extra in exchange for what looked like a nice place. Big mistake! Hang on to your hats this is a long review :(
We stayed in the family section (so I really cant comment on the adult section) first we arrive at the gate, greeted by a ?? who was grumbling cause his phone was ringing too much, clearly not a happy camper (pun intended) paid our fee, and were told to head up to the top (oh ya did I mention the whole thing is on a series of hills? Not great when you have to stop at the gate on a hill, then proceed up a steep hill from a dead stop when you have any sort of larger RV) pick a spot in area C or D, then come back with this slip filled out and tell us where your at, unusual, never had any place do this procedure when you have reservations, but whatever. So we jump in, start to leave and BAM, there goes the gate arms down on our 5th wheel, as you can imagine, certain words that shouldn't be said in front of children started coming out of my husbands mouth, and up the hill we went, figured we would look at the 5th wheel after we got up this stinkin hill and found a spot. Though we were given a map of the park and told to follow the red line, the actual directions in the park are a bit confusing but we did find C & D. Pickens were slim for a spot that would fit our 5th wheel with a slideout (though when I first made the reservation I was asked about all this). We found one we thought would work and settled in. Wow, see added photos to how small most of their spots are, we barely had room, and in fact due to the placement of their fire pit (ha ha) we couldn't even have a fire with our awning out (we later took it upon ourselves to move the fire pit to a better location back away from our RV so we could have smores with the kids without burning our trailer down). We also had to trim back some of the blackberry bushes so we could walk from our truck to the spot without snagging ourselves on them (can you say maintenance?)
We filled out our paperslip and then headed back down the hill (glad we have a 5th wheel so we can detach our truck, cause this place is huge and the gates are quite a distance from our spot and since we're disabled if we where in a RV I don't know if we could have walked back up, something you might consider 1000 Trails, as to your checkin procedure's) We get back to the gate keeper aka obvious minimum wage worker, and he has the nerve to bitch about his gate coming down on our RV, are you serious? YOU have some sort of control of the gate arms you idiot, your lucky there was no damage to our 5th wheel and from the look of the arms were weren't the first, maybe this is your way of letting off steam from a job you clearly are not happy about?
Included in our pack was a confusing calendar of things going on in the park, took me a few but I figured it out for the time we were staying, looked like lots of fun things for the kids, till you really start looking, then you find the majority of "fun" things cost extra money. Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying a little for certain extras, however, if I were a member paying dues to stay at these lovely places (God they cant all be this bad can they?) I would be irritated, I know the membership is not cheap. Ice cream social for the kids $3.00 each, slip and slide (that's a whole nother story) $1,00 each, you even have to pay a quarter if you want to play ping pong, .25 is not going to kill anyone, but that's not the point here and on and on. The pool itself is free and pretty nice, the pool area however has seen better days and NEEDS MAINTENANCE!!!! The hayride is free, so we arrived 10 minutes early for it and were told by the rude store employee, yes, yet another employee with a bad attitude, that it had already left, when I questioned her about it ~~~ was suppose to leave at 3, we were there 10 minutes before, what's going on? We were told she didn't know anything other than the park manager had been on it and maybe it was full (ughhh) With over 300 spots in this park, many families with kids, maybe just maybe you might want to run that a couple times a day on the weekends????
From our observations the whole park needs maintenance from paint to electric work, one call that the gatekeeper was griping about was from a camper telling him the electric was out in his area, so he called the handyman to go check it out, funny ours went out later on also (totally different area) which we were told happens a lot by the campers next to us.
SUMMARY, overpriced (plus no sewer or cable), disappointing, and misleading and obviously run by a greedy corporation who only cares about $$$ read more
