This downtown Fort Worth bar is my favorite kind of place to get a drink. It's designed as a bookstore, a bit dark and brooding, complete with sofas and cozy chairs to lounge and sip with friends. It's quiet enough to have a conversation with your group. The cocktail list is creative and our drinks were delicious. Service was attentive but not bothersome. During the day it's perfect to have happy hour. At night be prepared for standing room only as this place is very popular. Downtown FTW gem. Walk in to a quite, beautifully decorated space with a unique cocktail menu. You can then head down to the speakeasy (assuming you know the secret password) or up to the event area or alllll the way up to the cigar lounge. I came here on a Thursday night thinking they would be open till 2 AM because of incorrect information that I had. I went down to the speakeasy bar and instantly recognized it as Vivid definitely one of the favorite bars I've ever been to. Over the years, this full corner location has been home to several bars that just weren't my style. I very much enjoyed my visit here. It was 15 minutes until they close so I got a drink before last call. Despite my coming in at the last minute, Rohan my bartender was very kind. He asked me what I wanted. I was very vague. I told him I wanted something with bourbon that wasn't too sweet. He fixed me up with a wonderful drink. It was made of Buffalo Trace bourbon, jalapeño agave, orange bitters and orange liqueur. My favorite bar in this area has been Eddie Vs. This may be my new favorite bar. read more

Thompson's didn't disappoint. I like how it was a more laid-back type speakeasy...some can be pretentious, but not here. Bartender was nice, made honest recs and great drinks. Bonus was the Sunday happy hour, I think the classics were 6$. I got a classic and a specialty cocktail, both whiskey-based and both strong and satisfying. This place is definitely a vibe. Main floor is a cool bar with great decor. Upstairs is another bar with a cigar lounge. On the main floor there's a secret entrance to the Speakeasy downstairs. Two companions and I visited Thompson's Bookstore on May 4th, 2023, at about 7:30PM, due to pictures and reviews on Yelp. When we arrived, there was an extremely strong lacquer smell emanating from the establishment. We entered and inquired about that and were told it was because of a current floor refinish above them. Okay, we'd have one drink and leave. I ordered two boulevardiers from the cocktail menu ($10) and inquired as to which bourbon would be used. The bartender replied that they'd use Jim Beam Black, which I dislike, so I asked that he use Redemption Rye instead (a $24 bottle, but MUCH better). He replied that there would be a small upcharge. No worries. I figured this to be about $2, as the bottle price is not much different. The drinks are delivered, he asks for my card, and rings me up. When he handed me the bill, it was apparent he charged me for four 1oz pours of redemption at $15.50 each, which made the total tab, for TWO drinks, $67. I immediately told him that he'd made an error. He was unable to modify the bill, for some reason. To spare my companions the extra time required of me to deal with this at the time, I chose to simply handle it the next day. I wrote my original review and the owner, as well as the GM, contacted me directly to resolve the matter. They were polite and professional, apologized for the inconvenience, and refunded the appropriate amount to my CC. This is how businesses build a loyal customer base, by listening and responding with appropriate action. I applaud the owner and her GM. Thank you for your integrity. I'll be back to TB when in Fort Worth. read more

I'm sorry that I have overlooked an review of this establishment...they deserve not just the 5 Star rating I gave bit more importantly kudos in the form of a written review. Establishments that specialize in Bartending and do not fall back on food or some other distraction are becoming more popular however my guess is Thomason's is one of the early entrants in this space and have perfected their service and product at a level rarely paralleled. I had nothing but a Del Maguey Mezcal but having consumed a number of differing brands, as well as Tequila's, Sotols and Racillos I must say that they apparently have chosen the brand (and selection as there are a number of Del Magueys) which is not just reasonably priced but of superior taste. In addition is a discussion (more like academic debate with PhD bartenders quite frankly) that can be as much entertainment as the establishment itself which is a sophisticated version of a neighborhood bar...the Harvard or MIT type... In any case if you seek expertise and a unique experience in mixology...it is impossible to have done so without a visit to this fine establishment. It is epic. read more

Loved this place for years. Great craft cocktail menu, with friendly bartenders who love coming up with new taste sensations. The main floor is sublime, a great place to quietly relax with a book or a special someone. The pharmacy downstairs is more lively, with what tends to be a larger and more 20-ish crowd. Tons of interesting books like the book cases, a bar full of delicious libations line the upstairs bar area and the downstairs bar as well. Seating in this place ranges from elegant to comfy sofas to chill, drink, be merry and converse with friends. The downstairs bar has a stage area for live bands, cozy booths for intimate chill time as well as bar seating if you want to hang out with your oncologist and watch all the action. I tried several drinks from the menu and none of them disappointed my taste buds. But beware...these drinks aren't cheap...so don't freak out if your tab...is a bit high. Slight hint of cigars because of their cigar lounge. Bartenders aren't terribly on the ball. They rarely look up to acknowledge people surrounding the bar to order a drink. You end up standing there for several minutes waiting for some kind of eye contact. The couches in the place could use some refurbishing. If you don't practically fall through you'll be sitting on the frame. Liked the ambiance and decor. Nice place to hang and have drinks otherwise. read more

This is one of the bigger speakeasys that I've been to. IMO, the place doesn't give much of a bookstore vibe, but vibes were still there. Downstairs was the speakeasy that you need a password for (buy a drink at the main floor and password is on the receipt). It was basically a darker room vs. the main floor with plenty of seating available. Upstairs is the cigar bar, which I unfortunately didn't have the time to visit but I will next time! Upstairs was awesome. Great vibe, nicely spaced for COVID-19, and no wait at all around 9 pm on a Friday evening. The hostess put us "on the list" to go downstairs and we were fairly quickly allowed to go downstairs. We lasted all of about 10 seconds downstairs...the vibe there is awful! It's just generic bar vibes, SUPER noisy (yelling required), and much more packed/less COVID-friendly. We immediately asked to come back upstairs and were allowed to do so, but during busier hours it might have been tough. The crowd definitely picked up later in the evening, and I saw many groups turned away after putting their name and number on a waitlist. This is a pretty serious cocktail bar with a nice range of ingredients. I make a wide range of cocktails at home, so my standard for a 5-star bar is one that makes drinks I can't make at home. Thompson's definitely fits the bill and only lost one star because of the zero-atmosphere downstairs space. I especially liked that their menu noted the dates and creators of each drink. After we noticed that, we started factoring that into our drink decisions, figuring that a drink that's been on the menu longer must be particularly solid. Everything we ordered was fantastic. --------------- The Old Man and The Sea = My favorite cocktail of the evening, phenomenally well-balanced. I've tried sage in cocktails of my own and have never been able to make it work. That's a tricky herb to balance in a cocktail, and they do it masterfully in this drink. Dock of the Bay = My boyfriend's favorite cocktail of the evening. The peach flavor is really interesting, and the drink as a whole is nicely balanced and smooth. Smoke in the Morning = this one is really interesting...a little sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. A little bit like a dessert in a glass. It's a little hard to drink because the foam itself is alcoholic and THICK, like a meringue, but since some of the alcohol is only in the foam, you have to try to sort of bite into the foam as you take each sip in order to get a balanced flavor profile. Honestly, this bugged me for the first couple sips but after that was fine. Warning: it's pink and fluffy. Farther Further = we liked this one, but not as much as the others. Drinks I want to try next time: - Replicant Blush - Gypsy Woman - Zelda F - The Mind Flayer(?) - Drinks from their "favorites" list on the last page of the menu, some of which date back to 2015. read more

They have wine and beer if cocktails aren't your thing, but I highly recommend that you order nothing but cocktails here because their creativity is one of the finest in Fort Worth. You must find out the password to go to the downstairs and walk through a bookcase. (Usually on their fb page or on the receipt if you buy a drink from upstairs) Believe me, the first time you do this you will feel so VIP, and when you bring someone who has never been, they will think you are too cool for school. Thompson's makes some of the best whiskey sours and old fashioned(s). The apple pie drink is not too sweet and tastes just like an apple pie. Norma jeane was a very sweet drink, so if you like sweet and fruity, then that will be your drink. The show stopper of the night was the liquid thin mint. I felt special drinking it. This location was open during Covid-19. Masks and social distancing were in place. I walked in during happy hour just by chance and the drinks (6.50 usd) and the choices did not disappoint. While the seating was taken I sat at the bar which has never been a problem with me and enjoyed casual conversation with the knowledgeable bartenders. The vibe was cool casual and collect a place to have private conversations with the people you came with. A very nice intimacy vibe for those looking for peace quite or a date.
