Called to check on product availability and was put on hold for 30 minutes. When I finally reached someone, they said they were busy and couldn't tell me exactly what was in stock - that I should just come in and look. Drove 20 miles to check, and they did not have what I needed. I approached the front desk to set up an order (65 sheets of hardie siding and 40 pieces of trim). I was told to leave my contact, and their architectural sales rep would call me. Never heard back a week later. Is this the best that Thompson has to offer? One would think that you'd get better customer service and product selection compared to big box stores, but I guess that's not true. read more

Needed decorative landscaping rock. Did my due diligence. Returned to Thompson Building Materials because they had the best price. I mean, C'mon, they're rocks! Kenny was super helpful. He made sure my calculations were correct. I was in and out. Two days later, Mark the driver drops the loads onto my yard. He was not only a tad earlier than scheduled, but met and discussed with me in detail how much of and exactly where to place the different rocks in my yard. We were struggling to find the right kind of fire proof door for our condo since it has an atypical size and needed to meet HOA requirements. We went to a name brand, chain store and even after requesting help got very minimal support, so we ended up having to return the door we ordered as it did not meet the specifications. We decided to check out Thompson Building. Vince realized we had never changed out a door before and instead of being discouraging, he made every effort to figure out what we needed, asking questions and looking at pictures. He gave advice on the pros and cons of different products including ease of installation. He also figured out we didn't need the super expensive door the chain store recommended! Vince helped us order what we needed and delivered it. Vince stayed in contact with us, answered ALL of our very many questions and also ended up spending his own time helping us complete our difficult project. This place is so cool! Lots of really fantastic stuff!!! Furthermore, the guys that work there are awesome! I went in as an artist (big ideas and no idea how to accomplish it...LOL) told Kenny Reyna what I wanted to do, he helped me research the best way to do what I was trying to do, gathered the materials, answered all my questions, and took my money. I went outside and the young gentlemen who helped me load the rocks and concrete bags I bought was great too! Should have taken him home as those bags are HEAVY, literally flipped it head over tail into my garage (think tractor tire work out). We purchased two boulders from this store. The boulders weighed about 1300lbs total and so we needed them delivered to our residence. Our salesman, Kenny, did a good job helping us with our needs and gave us a discount on the boulders and delivery. A note was added to the order to call us 15 mins prior to arriving. The boulders were delivered next week and the driver did not call us prior to arriving and just dropped it off on the far side of our driveway after calling to tell us we are not required to be there for delivery. We had to drag the boulders 20ft to place them. We called the store a few days later to try to set things straight but no compensation was given. read more

Whenever I think of patio improvements I like to visit this shop. They have so many different designs and styles in building material to offer. They are knowledgeable of their products and can make some good recommendations. The showroom area is always arranged to show off the various products they carry and to help you create your own style. They have a variety of flower pots, statues and fountains etc to decorate your patio or other landscaping projects. I'm not a contractor. Just a home owner. So, when I'm going to drop a heavy amount of money, shopping around is a must. We met with one sales person. He was polite, explained quality, prices, and terms. We came back after research; their price was the near lowest. They took time to explain what we would need, gave some tips on installation. They scheduled deliver on a Saturday Morning, with on a week's advance notice. They warned that one of my 'idea's was going to have some excess - they were right. Delivery came on time, fast, super helpful in placing it close to our needed spot. Product was as advertised and worked exactly as we expected and wanted. Listen, this isn't your typical big box store. They do brick and masonry - that's about it. They do large quantity. If you're buying two bricks for a planter - probably not your place. Go in with the idea you're doing a big project, have some ideas and are open to some advice, and you'll come out happy - very happy. 100% pleased. Minus some blisters and bruises. read more

We used Thompson Building Materials for a couple different items in the course of landscaping our back yard. As many projects do, ours began to have problems. We contacted Thompson about their products, which we felt might be a contributing factor to our issues. Derek, the Manager, personally came out to our house and went over everything that may or many not have been a part of it. Even though no one could tell exactly whose responsibility it was, Derek jumped in and made things easier for everyone. He was extremely fair and generous. Over the next couple weeks, he continued to make it easy for us when problems came up. He took a personal interest in how things were turning out and only cared about us having the back yard we wanted. I have never had a company work so hard for my personal outcome. Everyone we dealt with couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. Derek in particular has gone way out of his way to insure a positive outcome. This review is for the door and frame division. I'm a general contractor that does commercial work. I buy ALL of my doors from Thompson despite the travel distance from my shop. Yes, there are closer places like AMS, but they really don't care if you are there or not. Actually, they probably couldn't care less if you lived or died, either. I have been buying my stuff for years from Shannon at the door counter, she is friendly, helpful and a great person to represent the company. Micah, too, is outstanding. The yard and shop people are on top of it and always seem to be able to step up and help out quickly. I have never bought any of the stone products or the patio stuff, but there sure is a lot to choose from there. I started buying there about 35 years ago. On my first trip in, I knew nothing about the doors I was looking to buy, a patient and helpful employee spent the time with me and didn't make me feel like an idiot for asking a lot of questions. read more

If you're looking to update your yard this is the place to go!! I went in not really knowing what rocks I should buy and a worker named Ricky really helped out. He greeted me as soon as I got out of my car, asked if he could show me around and show me what products they had, and when I told him I wasn't sure which rocks to buy he said not to worry that he could make my backyard dreams come true and he didnt disappoint!! He was very patient because I can be indecisive and I left confident that I bought exactly what would bring my yard together! Selection: This place has a wonderful exhibit of their materials and brick/paver patters outside the front door. It's a good place to get ideas if you're not sure what you want. Service: They have many blue collar workers and companies that come in and know the procedures and staff by name, very casual environment, but very bad experience for the regular home owner. I felt like they were taking their reputation for granted and didn't feel the need to please the customer because they have plenty. No greeting when entering, blank stares when speaking to you, no enthusiasm, just very bad. If I were the owner, I would be very upset. Luckily, I was able to get someone that was not at the counter when I called about an order I placed. His name is Aciano. I have never seen this guy in the last 4 times I went to Thompson. He was knowledgeable, accommodating and told me to ask for him when I came in to pick up my order. When I arrived, he was not at the counter and they went to get him. What a difference! So professional and a pleasure to work with. I'm not sure if he is the owner or related, but he needs to train the rest of the staff. Overall: A great place to go, but avoid mediocre customer service and ask for Aciano. I was going to give 2-3 stars as I began writing my review in my head while at Thompson, but that guy turned things around immediately! Happy hardscaping! read more

AMAZING customer service! We are building a house and our contractor sent us to TBM to look at stucco colors. Ricky Nation and all the guys in the yard helped us not only check out all the colors (they have an outdoor showroom of stucco, stone, pavers so you can see them in natural light) but also ordered us samples from the manufacture so we can take them as we pick out roofing/ windows ect. I highly recommend going to Thompson over a chain store--they really took care of us and answered all our questions. I'm writing this review for service. I walked into their office to ask about a custom project completely unrelated to their line of business. The desk staff listened to me intently then put me through to the right people. Turns out the right person was busy so the desk staff took my contact information. An hour later I got a call from Mr. Right Person. He listened to my requirements and said "we've never done that but let me figure out how and get back to you". Through a series of emails and calls he got back to me with a quote. The project changed and I didn't end up moving forward, but I will next time. They were gracious about that, too. Now - let me say I don't know who these people think they are, but most if not all of the workers outside could care less about customer service. We (my partner and I) spend a decent amount of money at this business as it is local and has a solid reputation. Today as my partner and I were making our order of 120 bricks, we go out on the lot, get help from the one person who wouldn't ignore us and got the bricks loaded up in the car. Except, he drove off with our trunk wide open, thinking he would come back to close it. After waiting several minutes, he never came back and another work drove up, we asked if he could close out door as the other fellow did not. I quote, "No, you can get out your car and close the door yourself." Shaking his head and bad mouthing us as he drove off. This is unacceptable, what kind of response and treatment is this to PAYING customers. Now I understand, we may not be giant contracts building houses, but we are customers nonetheless and I demand input from the manager as this should and cannot be allowed. read more
