As an avid ice cream eater, and a self-proclaimed cream connoisseur, Thomas Sweet is an old haunt that i've frequented many times. The ice cream is undeniably good, enough for me to talk it up to a friend visiting from out of town for weeks prior to her trip down. So I can't even begin to express my frustration with the gourmet ice cream store, which has the gall to charge egregious amounts of money for frankly unacceptable and third-rate service. I hate to be that Yelper, but I'm going to be, because I have had enough. There is a LITANY of issues with this store, and someone needs to be held accountable.
1) My friend has Celiacs disease, so if any gluten comes into contact with what she eats, it induces nearly immediate illness. When she walked into the store and asked for the ingredients in the ice cream, the woman who we spoke with was incredibly dismissive and did not bother to give her an answer, even though the store is required by law to keep a list of what their product contains, so my friend played russian roulette with her ice cream order and hoped nothing had cross-contaminated the Mint Chocolate Chip, since I had raved about this shop so much, so she felt she couldn't miss it.
2) When we politely asked if we could trouble her for a second sample, the same woman basically implied that, yes, scooping a small second sample for me was a huge hassle, shot me the dirtiest look, and said "this is your last one."
3) When I then asked a question about what flavor was what to the man behind the counter, seeing as I was no longer allowed to actually sample, he answered me at first. And then I asked a follow up, and he straight up ignored me. I also want to explain that I was literally two feet in front of him, and the ONLY PERSON IN THE STORE. I knew he could hear me, and he literally was not doing anything else. Just standing there folding a cloth.
4) When we went to pay, the woman charged my friend and I $4.95 each for our Kiddie cups. Hmm is this just because T- Sweet is an upscale ice cream shop? Wellllll the small is $4.50, so this woman literally tried to scam us and arbitrarily make us pay a dollar more each. I called her out politely, saying "oh, it is really $4.95?" and she handed both of us $.95 each with out saying a word.
There are no words. As someone who has worked in the service industry, I am very understanding, and also make a point to be incredibly polite and indulgent when I interact with someone at, for instance, a scoop shop. But as a person with a fixed, limited income, going to this wonderful ice cream shop is always a treat. I wanted to share this special gem with my friend who flew hundreds of miles to visit, and instead, we both were left wondering how much we were overcharged and whether or not she would be sick for the rest of her two day visit. I loved Thomas Sweet, but I am never going to spend so much money at a place that treats me like trash, especially when Ben and Jerry's is right down the street, has good customer service, is cheaper, and, if I am being totally honest, has better ice cream.
I grew up on Thomas Sweet, but this has been a systemic issue. It's time for me to break up with this establishment; and I will be wallowing with pints of ice cream from elsewhere. read more
