I saw Dr Stephenson and I was Berated by one of the technicians because I told the Dr She did not properly explain how to do glaucoma test. She was out in the hall talking during the first test that the results came back inconclusive So the Dr is talking about laser surgery or eye drops We do the test again with the same technician who is extremely upset The test results comeback conclusive and they tell me they will see me in a year I dont know if my test results were conclusive or if they wanted me out the office. They had no problem taking my $100 co-pay but had a problem when I told them that one of their techs was distracted, multitasking and I could hear her out the door having a personal conversation after they give you an eye patch to put on your face that you dont know if a thousand people have used this same eye patch. Now I leave the Dr Not knowing am I going blind or am I 'not' going blind. Do I need to find another Doctor or even Do I need to find another Optometrist Practice and I have been coming to Thomas Eye Group for 40 years!!! Zero consideration for a patients time! Appointment was at 9am. Arrived 8:55am... walked to a room at 9:35 to be told it could be 1-2 hour wait on the doctor. There are only 3 doctors in today. no one is on the same page. they gave me the wrong pre on my glasses that I spent money on. I let the glasses tech know that everything was blurry. I called a week later and they told me to come in to have my eyes read again by the doctor no appointment needed. now fast forward to today they telling me I need to make appointment. my sch is not flexible enough to get come in 9:40am. so now I'm stuck with glasses I can't use? the company don't have any real compassion for patients at the Lithonia location. glasses tech is very nice. that's all you get. read more

My dad (82 yo and legally blind) first saw Dr. Stephens for glaucoma a few weeks ago. During that initial visit, Dr. Stephens mentioned surgical procedures that may reduce his dependency on eye drops.  He asked us to follow up with another appointment to allow him time to research our options.  During the follow up appt, he repeated the same presentation made during our first visit and concluded with "Well, it's clear your dad has glaucoma.". Of course we knew this 10 years ago when my dad, was first diagnosed. With Dr Stephens's ego being satisfied with his redundant diagnosis, he was prepared to leave the room without discussing the surgical procedure that he proposed during the first visit.  It was clear that he didn't recall his prior recommendation, hadn't reviewed my dad's medical records, and didn't consult with his glaucoma specialist before the follow up visit. At the end of the appt, after I reminded Dr. Stephens about his prior recommendation, he responded by refering us to the glaucoma specialist.  Dr. Stephens demeanor turned quite cocky once it was brought to his attention that he had obviously forgotten his initial treatment plan. He wouldn't acknowledge his mistake and it was clear that he didn't even review my dad's medical history before seeing him. The technician who took my dad's eye pressure was excellent. She was kind, had great bedside manner, and deservers acknowledging. Unfortunately, I dont remember her name (began with a T). To say the least, we were extremely disappointed with the lack of progress between visits and will not be returning to see Dr. Stephens, or Thomas Eye Group. They overbook their appointments and therefore, it took us 2 hours to be seen by anyone. First we sit in a packed waiting room for hours, then we are eventually seen by a doctor with a big head, who didn't do his job, and who didn't have enough humility to acknowledge his error. If you have a certain insurance they will give you The run around and discourage you from making an appointment with them they excepted my insurance but because of it was a particular insurance they told me I would have to wait like five months to see a doctor or get an exam if I was paying cash I can make an appointment right away. read more

I was supposed to have a laser eye procedure today with Augustus Stephens. I showed up to the appointment on time, was told to check in on the kiosk, and sat down and waited. The receptionist also scheduled me for a 1 week post op follow up. If I was terminated from the practice she wouldn't have been able to schedule any future appointments for me and would have gotten an error message had she tried. Also when Stephens came in that morning he would have saw my name on his schedule and what I was there for so he KNEW that morning he wasn't going to perform the surgery and should have had Ms.Brown contact me. Instead he had me waste my time and gas and drove almost 30 mins and have a tech perform an unnecessary exam and put numbing drops in my eyes. I was taken to a room by a guy in black scrubs and braids in his hair. From the start something seemed kind of fishy and like something wasn't right. He did an unnecessary eye exam and then put numbing drops in my eyes and took my eye pressure twice. He then started asking me a bunch of weird questions about my vision. Seemed like he was delaying things but I answered them as best as I could. I then asked him if this was the room the procedure was going to be done in and he said no it's just the prep room. I asked because yet again they left the door wide open and he was discussing my personal health business in front of everyone to hear and potentially exposing me to covid. Patients and staff that walked by looked in the room at us and I even had a hard time hearing him because the people in the hall were so loud. He then says he needed to put 4 more drops in my eyes but that he needed to go talk to someone before he did. At that point my Spidey senses were going off and something definitely did not feel right. He also had me sign the surgery consent form. He then leaves the room and never comes back. I waited at least 5 or so mins and then Marcia Brown the clinic manager comes in and shuts the door. From the beginning she was very rude, impatient, unprofessional, and nasty. I have it all on video and per Georgia's wiretapping law I am allowed to record ANY and every conversation I am apart of. Georgia is a one party consent state so I don't have to let the other party know I am recording or get their permission. I am well versed on state laws. She starts rambling about how I've had issues there and how at my last visit with Dr.Stephens I voiced a concern to her over the fact he left the door wide open while discussing my personal health information. Everyone that walked by could hear and 2 nurses at the desk were listening and looking in the room at us talking so of course I was concerned as I did not consent to a door being open. The issues I had were the incompetent schedulers that lied to me when they first scheduled my laser procedure at Hillandale but I later found out it wasn't the actual laser procedure. But a new appointment with another doctor who was Dr.Stephens. Instead of the doctor I was originally supposed to have the procedure done with. Originally I saw Dr.Carlisle and he was going to do the procedure but the office was far from my home and I wanted to have it done at the Hillandale location as it was closer to my home. I was also told before I went to my first appointment with Thomas eye that I could switch to the closest location after that first appointment with no issues. Some places won't allow you to see another doctor within the practice and this was an emergency visit to establish care as I have been seeing black floaters in my left eye for months. I was also told I could see a retina specialist but was later denied the right to see Dr.Goldberg because Carlisle didn't think it was necessary. Although in Alabama I did see retina specialists. I said to Ms.Brown what does any of this have to do with the laser procedure I am having today and she rudely said we're not doing the procedure and that they were terminating my care because of the concern I voiced and other alleged issues. Basically they were retaliating against me for questioning them about leaving the door open during my exam on 3/17/2022. Mind you I've only had 3 appointments with their office. The first one was in Lilburn with Dr.Carlisle, second at Hillandale with Stephens, and the last one in Sandy Springs with Mcluskey. I didn't have issues with Carlisle, McCluskey, and not even Stephens. It was only their schedulers so Ms.Brown lied about that part. The lie Ms.Brown told me when I voiced that concern was that "HIPPA has given us the right to leave the door open because of covid". Uh first off I'm not stupid and I know for a fact that is a lie. I know HIPPA laws as when I went to school for Medical administrative assistant I had to take a HIPPA course and my husband works as IT director for a medical office so he knows HIPPA more than I and even he said what Ms.Brown said wasn't true. BEWARE! They did the old switcheroo on me! They gave me an eye doctor that was not in my insurance's network and slapped me with a $365 bill for a mere eye exam, glasses not included. I recommend you triple check they are giving you a doctor that accepts your insurance. The staff and doctor were kind but visually overwhelmed. My son's pediatrician recommended this place and I wish I would have read the reviews before coming. I waited over an hour in the waiting area (appointment was 10:45 wasn't called back until 12:06). The technician came in and then we weren't seen my a doctor until almost 1pm. I would have left if it wasn't for the fact that they had dilated my 5 years old eyes. This place is a combo of pediatric and adult patients. I would think they would be courteous of the fact that kids 5 and under will not be able to wait patiently for 3 hours for an eye exam. My most recent experiences at the Hillandale location have been less than pleasant. I have had two appointments in the last three months regarding glaucoma. The first appointment, I was at the location for 3 hours, spending only about 10-15 minutes with the doctor at most!! On the followup appointment, I was there for 2 hours, spending about 10 minutes with the doctor!!! It is obvious to me that they are triple/quadruple appointments at the same time! Most of the patients at this location are seniors which is a great disrepect of our time. In addition, I got a prescription for these very expensive eye drops. Most doctors will warn you of the cost and/or provide you with a generic option. Dr. Stephens also seems quite disturbed or impatient if you ask any questions; a nice-nasty professional attitude. Zero Star. My experience at the Hillandale location was horrible. My appointment was at 250pm and I arrived about 10 minutes early and did not leave until 608pm. I waited over 3 hours to see the doctor and I was literally the last appointment to leave. I kept asking did they forget I was waiting to see the doctor and that my appointment was at 250pm and I was assured I wasn't forgotten. My wait was so long I started to feel sick. While I was there, I was never even offered a bottle of water since there is a sign on the entrance door clearly stating no food or drink allowed. Finally I see Dr. Augustus Stephens doctor only to find out that the flashing light test was not done and I have to return in 3 weeks to get it done which could have been done while I was there but wasn't (and I should not have to pay another co-pay for their mistake). When I first arrived the waiting area was full and I saw people come and go but I was still waiting. The staff started to leave and I was still waiting, they turned off the TV which only played boring advertisements while I was still waiting. The doctor made an apology for my wait time and said it was unusual but according to the other people waiting said it's normally a 2 hour wait. The doctor sarcastically mentioned that it was not his desire to be there late either. My advice is, "If you consider your time valuable then go some place else who also considers your time valuable. I had an appt today after THEY rescheduled. After checking in was told to sit in a certain waiting area. A young lady called my name after approx 15 mins. She asked was the man next to me with me, I said yes. She said, he could come with you. I said, he doesn't need to. She never said who she was or why I was going with her. I assumed I was going to be prepped before seeing the doctor. We went on the other side of the building, and she said, you have a $10.00 co-pay. I gave her my card and asked, "I came way around here to pay my co-pay? She didn't open her mouth. I saw a few chairs there and ASSUMED again I needed to get my husband from on the other side of the building, since this is the new waiting area I need to be. The lady that took my co-pay, never responded to me. Matter of fact, she then left the area. About 20 mins later, my name was called, and I was taken into the exam room. Good, I thought because I had another another appt. at 3pm. The lady introduced herself as the office manager there. Can't remember her name. She said she was told I had a problem and that she could reschedule me. I told her I didn't have a problem; her worker had a problem. A Big Communication problem and I wasn't going to reschedule, and I needed to see the doctor. This manager was nasty, rude, out of place, and talking to me as if I was her subordinate. Will someone tell these people with their lazy persona that they need better Communication skills, and no one is their child or subordinate. We are customers! I drive from Grayson because I started there, but I won't again. It never ceases to amaze me the attitudes and the sense of self-importance are on display whenever I go in that area for any type of service. The workers upon hire need a course in Communication and how to interact with their company customers. I had to say this was an excellent eye exam and office visit. This was my first time visiting this practice and after going to another facility and leaving less than satisfied with the level of customer service. I looked for a new place to get my eyes examined and get the follow-up care I needed.  The visit was great on several levels. First, their covid safety measures we well done. There will always be relatively close contact with eye exams but I felt safe and secure. Second, everyone from the front office staff, medical assistants, and the docs were very nice and pleasant. Next, while the office was undergoing some painting/remodeling...it still looked very clean and well taken care of and will look even better once the work is completed. I would only recommend that the staff occasionally walk out and wipe down the chairs, tables, and kiosks in the lobby with Lysol/Clorox wipes as people come and go periodically (just an added layer of covid safety...just a suggestion). Next, the use of the technology was awesome...this included the email appt reminder and the online patient portal (which was a cool interactive tool and I highly recommend completing this before your first visit)...I had to call the office helpdesk to assist me in getting registered...might have just been a system glitch that got corrected once I called. As well there was the patient check-in kiosk was really nice and efficient. My data from the patient portal was already stored in it making my check-in pretty quick and painless. Maybe add a few more signs to help new people (e.g., "this line for check-in", "new patients check-in at the kiosk first", "this line for check out", "this line if you're picking up glasses", "please place wipe and then place your head on this to check your temp" etc...A couple of things took a second for me to figure out...I had never seen the type of automated temp-taking device they used and was not sure if it was auto scanning me from a distance and would be set off only in the event of detecting an elevated temp (similar to those that walk by the scanners in airports like Singapore) or if I had to step toward it and place my forehead at or near it to get my specific temp)...also no one confirmed that everyone got temps checked so it seemed a bit optional...again, a sign telling folks how to use it would have helped and a way to confirm that everyone got their temps checked and were cleared to enter would have been nice...I was not sure if the kiosk was for returning patients only or all new patients or both...someone else stood in line for a bit only to be told she could just step over to the desk to see the optician. Again more signage would easily fix those ambiguities. Again, complete the online portal patient intake before the visit if you can save time at check-in.  Finally, Dr. Ninita Brown was great, efficient, and invoked confidence in me. I asked all of my questions and both she and all of the medical assistants that conducted my screenings and tests were thorough and pleasant to engage.  Overall, the experience was incredible, and am glad I found an eye care center I can trust moving forward. read more

Everything is great except the time management. My appts are always booked at 8am or 8:10am. I arrive 10 minutes prior to the appt. Having to wait for a hour after the scheduled appt time is not efficient and is a waste of time. If this improved I could give it 5 stars. The facility is clean. I had an appointment with Dr. Wallace at 10:30am in the morning. It was very easy locating Thomas Eye Group Hillandale. I gotten out of my vehicle and proceeded into my appointment. As I waiting patiently for my turn to come to speak to the receptionist I proceeded to use there check in system. My turn and come up for my to converse with the African decent young lady I explained to her my appointment. I was coming to Dr. Wallace for a post op visited. The young lady looked at me and in and unprofessional tone. She mentioned my balance on my charts I explained to her a payment situation has be set up and everything is fine. I've been to many Thomas eye groups, this is the worst I've ever seen. Honestly the worst eye appointment I've ever experienced in my life. It makes the whole brand look bad. They might well shut this place down till they find new management. Been waiting 2 hours and I had an appointment. What even is the the point of having an appointment when you have to wait hours. Then the lady at the desk refused to tell me how much longer the wait would be. She wouldn't even tell me if it would be more than 4 hours or not. Disgusting service. During a pandemic, I'm not sure why this place overbooks patients. I went there and l was met with no seating available. The UPS guy didn't even enter and asked if they were having a party. Doesn't this violate some COVID-19 policies? My appointment was at 10:30 AM, but wasn't taken back until 12:30 PM. This place (Lithonia) seems unorganized and ill-prepared to have any patients. I'm not sure if I want to have eye surgery with an organization that seems dysfunctional. I'm very afraid that they will over bill me or charge me for services, since I've had to come for several visits. I've been asked to come back several times for testing I don't need or could have been done in the same day. After reading the other reviews I think it best to I go elsewhere. I had previous experience with Thomas Eye Group when they first open in Lithonia and it was the worst. The tech did 90 percent of the eye exam and the doctor only 10 percent. I was very unhappy with the visit and vow never to return . Then my insurance change in 2020 and I decided to give them a second chance. Wow was I wrong to go back . The visit went ok but little did I know a nightmare was about to begin. They could not get my prescription right even after I advise that it should remain the same due to the prior one was the only one that would work for me. Customer service level when trying to reach someone to spoke with is the worst every. Phone rings continuously without an answer. So I promise I will not return this time every again. My daughter was diagnosed with a bacterial infection of the lymph node that spread to her eye apparently. It was swollen and red with discharge. We were given antibiotics by the pediatrician and told that if the eye didn't get better in 4 days to see someone. Well her eye got slightly better but it didn't return to normal. So I made an appointment with the ophthalmologist. I've been to this location before and never had any major issues besides the wait time. The billing staff member was not very friendly, caring or concerned with our situation. Her name was Shelly. I had a copay of either $35 or $50. I asked her to verify with my insurance and she told me that I need to do that. So I called and found that it was indeed $50. I was only prepared to pay $25-$35 and right now we are in a financial bind with me having recent medical issues. I asked if we could pay half now and half later and she said she spoke to two managers and they said no. Where is the compassion? I know it's my responsibility as a patient to pay my copay but sometimes it's just not possible. I've been a patient here for maybe 5 years and I've never failed to pay my balance. That should have been enough for them to allow me to make an exception. Needless to say compassion and caring go a long way. For this reason I will be switching providers. I needed to make a change because I was very unhappy with the Optometry group that I was going to, I was not pleased for the last 2 years. I had 2 new pair of glasses that I could not wear. I stopped in Thomas Eye Group to see what it was like. I was greeted by their very friendly staff and Anita. I explained that I was unhappy where I was going and was just checking to see if this was a place that I would like to come. The atmosphere was fantastic. I was greeted by everyone when walking in, making me feel welcomed. Everyone was very professional and friendly. Anita took time to explain to me about their glasses and lens. I did not have my vision plan with me, but she took the time to look me up in the system and found me. At this point I made an appointment for myself and a senior family member. At our appointment time, they were very gracious to keep us together so that I could be with my family member that I brought. We saw Dr. Augustus T. Stephens...He was very informative. I told him that when you get ready to do that eye puff test, I won't be able to do it. He just laughed, and said "we don't do that test." Instead I was seated and the machine just took imagery of my eyes. Wow, I felt like the place I used to go to was prehistoric. I waited until I picked up my glasses before writing this review. I absolutely would not do business with this office again. The billing department forwarded an unpaid balance directly to a bill collector prior to sending an invoice to the address on file. When asked to provide any documentation to support their claim that an invoice as ever sent out, they were unable to do so. Be sure to follow up with them and document all transactions with them well, because they aren't doing so. read more

My husband and I went in together around 12:30 and was out by 2:00, so I would say that was a pretty good turn around for us given the fact that they serviced both of us together and did everything that an eye appointment includes. My first experience with Thomas Eye Group was just awful from start to now (which is an ongoing dispute against how my visit was billed on my insurance). I arrived early to my scheduled appointment of 1:00 pm. Completing the initial patient's paperwork online did not change the fact that my wait time was over 4 hours. The doctor apologized for my long wait, which was acceptable because things do happen. After the receptionist unlocked the front door to let me out, I would have never realized that things would get worst. Fast-forwarding ... to the call received from Hillsdale's location office manager (Tonya) whose lack of Customer Service was shocking. Tonya hung up the phone in my face saying "write what you must" Bang. Yes, I am an upset customer (but never rude, disrespectful or unprofessional); upset because after having and paying for vision insurance for 29 years; I never expected to pay several hundreds of dollars for what I thought was a routine eye examine. Routine eye examine, on my plan, are free. I do not now or have I ever worn eyeglasses. The lack of "customer service" in such a sensitive matter not to mention all the others shortcoming (not mentioned) is not what I consider good business practice. read more

If you are seeking a optometrist that offers unkind and insensitive service this is the place for you. For nearly 3 years I chose to endure inappropriate actions from this provider because I thought this was the best provider for my son's car since I referred to the provider because of my son's need. After today's visit there is absolutely no way I would ever visit this provider nor refer them to anyone else. For years I have been over charged and each time I questioned the charges I was given excuses. The excuses ranged from a different charge is required because I ask the provider a question, my son has a medical diagnosis yet there have no follow-up visits only annual routine examinations, it is necessary because of prescription glasses which he has never been described and the most inappropriate one was because my son will not sit still during his examination and if I take him to Wal-Mart they wouldn't deal with it either. Because I spoke up about the inappropriateness I was called out of the exam room by a lead scheduler and taken until a private room then told my son could not receive his examination after spending a 1 1/2 hour in the office and told to leave. I was even watched over by the lead scheduler as I completed the paperwork to have my son records, while putting on my son's coat. It was embarrassing to be continued to be stared at by this employee while other patients and employees watched as if I had committed a crime or needed escorting out of the office. I will under every circumstance always advocate for my son's care especially when I feel we are being discrimated against because he has special needs -- No I do not need to go to Wal-Mart for an examination because I have insurance and can see any private provider I want, No you will not charge me more because my son has special needs, and No I do not need a offical discharge because I would never for any reason chose you as a provider for me or my family. read more

Overall, I was very dissatisfied with my service at this office. My child has a rare vision impairment and has been a patient for over two years. When I requested a school form for my child, I noticed that there was a note on the form that said my child was due for his annual check-up in June so I decided to make an appointment. During my child's exam, the technician laughed every time my child answered incorrectly which made him uncomfortable and was also very unprofessional and not to mention disheartening. The doctor could not provide answers to my questions, nor did she follow up with me to provide any information after the appointment even though she mentioned that she would. After leaving the office, I realized that I was billed incorrectly as my insurance plan covers an annual exam at a cost of $10 yet I was charged $45. I called to get the charge corrected and the person in billing told me that my son's claim was filed as a medical claim due to his vision impairment and they refused to change it. I will never go back to this practice due to the unprofessional, unsympathetic staff as well as billing issues I encountered. read more
