    My billing statement
    Brett A.

This was my first time at this dental provider. They want to bill you for every item that is normally part of the overall cleaning at other dental offices. On top of that, after my insurance refused to pay for one item, they billed for digital pictures taken to assess me for Invisalign. They billed me for it. Now, I had no idea at the time because they never mentioned it, that this was an "extra" item. If I had known, I would have refused because I had no intention of ever using Invisalign because my teeth, although not perfect, are pretty darn good. When I called to ask about it, I am told it was a necessary procedure. Really? Necessary for what? To bill me extra for a service I never wanted. Needless to say I will never go back. If you go here I suggest you get a printed quote on everything they intend to do BEFORE having them do it.

I had a dental emergency on Thursday when my molar cracked in half. It had a very large cavity that I got 4 years ago, so the walls were thin and much of the inside was just a filling. I knew I would likely need a root canal at some point, because that was what the dentist wanted to do to begin with. The tooth had been hurting me for some months- the filling was degrading and it became very sensitive so I practically stopped chewing on that side. Yesterday I was eating a bagel and when I bit down, I had a terrible pain because the tooth cracked down to the gum line, exposing the filling and the tooth nerve! It was 11:45am. I made a few calls and could not find an emergency appointment. I was also advised that I would likely need an oral surgeon for an extraction, due to the delicate shell of my remaining tooth. When I talked with Thomas Dental, Neraida (sorry if I misspelled your name!) told me they had no oral surgeon until Saturday so I hung up. Shortly thereafter she called me back. I told her I had a 2pm appointment elsewhere for free xrays and exam. She said they would do the same and if I needed to wait until Saturday for the surgeon, they would give me pain meds. She assured me they could take care of me, if I could come in right away...which was music to my ears and my throbbing tooth! Parking is around the back and on the side street. It is located on the NE corner, easy to find. I was seen within 5 minutes of entering and the paperwork was simple. The xray machine is digital so there is zero wait time. The assistant was very gentle and doctor Rizberg made me feel very comfortable. I believe root canals can be inherently dangerous by causing systemic health problems. I watched a movie about it and considered removing my other one, and now I was facing a second potentially health damaging procedure! Doctor Rizberg explained that an extraction with a bridge requires neighboring teeth to be shaved and whittled down in order to cement the bridge in place, which often causes extreme sensitivity, requiring those teeth to get...root canals! A bridge was also about $1000 more expensive. Extraction with an implant was also discussed, but that requires almost a year to complete and costs alot of money. There can be problems with sensitivity, infection and ability to function normally. Now I would have loved to get a porcelain root canal, they do them in Mexico but I could not wait with an exposed nerve. Hindsight, I wish I would have sought out a biological dentist, since I do not have insurance, I am out of pocket regardless. Dr Rizberg told me that she minored in biological dentistry and I found that she was able to hold an objective conversation around my concerns. That made me so comfortable. I was in pain so she got to work and I was done within 90 minutes, maybe less. She numbed me so well that I felt absolutely nothing, unlike my last root canal. She explained what she was doing along the way. She also compared my 1st root canal with her work, and there is a substantial difference in quality. After it was done, they took a second xray to make sure the pins were seated correctly and that she had gotten all of the nerve out. My total was $1600. Root canal $550, Core build up w/pins $140, porcelain crown, $800. I think I could have gotten the crown for $500 elsewhere. So I dropped a star because I feel like I overpaid at least $300. They showed me 2 different pricing structures. There was a $99 fee to pay the lower rate of $1500- the first table showed $3500! That is over 3x the average cost! So I think they overcharged me. They have 2 sets of rates and I did not fully understand their explanation of why. I used care credit, 12 months at 0% financing. Before we started, they handed me a prescription for motrin. I got up to leave because it is 2019, I live in the USA and should not have to suffer in pain. Dr Rizberg agreed to write me a stronger script- there is no way to abuse 3 days worth of pain meds anyway. I know there is a crisis, but that does not mean people who need bonafide pain control should suffer. More people die from alcohol and it is legal, but I digress. The lab to make the crown is offsite so it will be 2 weeks before I can get my permanent crown. I HATE the dentist because it hurts to be worked on, but my experience was quite pleasant, so I will likely return. If I find better pricing, I would consider going elsewhere. I have no insurance, but they did not have better rates for cash paying customers, as most places do. I had an emergency. They responded immediately. I saw an all female staff. Cons: Potentially Overpriced No lab on site Reluctant to provide proper pain management meds Pros: Little wait time Extremely friendly and considerate staff Very patient, kindly took all the time I needed to review options while in the chair Zero pain during procedure Talked me through the process while working Instant digital Xrays

very nice staff and very informative. Thank you!!

Friendly staff. Quick and easy check up. And no cavities (shocking because it's been 2.5 years since I've been able to get in/ find a place since I've moved across country).

How much is an implant for a single front tooth? Thanks JJ

Hi JJ, it depends on several factors. Quality of bone, if there is a tooth being extracted and then an implant being placed, etc. . They start at about $2500 for an implant and crown. It varies a little bit from case to case. If you are interested… Read more

Special shout out to Rachel, who is perhaps the sweetest healthcare worker I have ever encountered. I was visibly nervous when I went back about being put under and Rachel talked me through and really put my nerves at ease. I am so grateful that she was there. If I may offer a word of advice, looking back I wish I had been told more about what to expect in terms of appearances at the extraction site. I was quite alarmed when I first looked at one of the holes and have been relying on the past experiences of family and friends to judge if I should be concerned. My visit lasted approximately five minutes, and I was told the issue was TMJ -- which was completely unrelated to the reason I was there. There was minimal examination and no meaningful discussion of the actual concern that prompted my referral. The following day, I sought a second opinion from another oral surgeon, who was surprised that my condition had not been properly evaluated or treated. The difference in thoroughness and concern between the two appointments was significant. I then attempted to resolve the billing issue directly with the office. For nearly two months, I repeatedly reached out to billing and was told the person in charge was on leave. After finally getting in contact with her, she was extremely rude and stated the charges were non-negotiable, insisting that Dr. Golding did everything "appropriately." When I explained my concerns and the circumstances, I was told I would be sent to collections -- which ultimately happened. I was sent to collections for over $750 for this brief consultation that did not adequately address the medical concern I was referred for. Being sent to collections under these circumstances is incredibly disappointing and stressful. Patients deserve to feel heard, thoroughly evaluated, and treated with professionalism -- both medically and administratively. I cannot recommend this office based on my experience.

DR NELSON IS A GODSEND!!!!…read more Before hearing about, and being referred to Dr. Nelson, I had unfortunately experienced oral surgery from another surgeon who turned out to be negligent and was responsible for weeks of severe unnecessary pain. That doctor had extracted a tooth, put in a bone graph and placed a membrane due to a small perforation in my sinus cavity. With that other doctor, I was scheduled for one follow up visit but the intense pain I was experiencing necessitated 4 return visits within 2 weeks. I felt strongly that I had developed an infection from the procedure and requested an antibiotic. She refused, claiming there was no infection. She took no tests or CT scan to rule out an infection. Instead she was rude, dismissive and acted like I was making up the level of pain I was experiencing. After a month of her completely inappropriate behavior as my pain increased, I went to Dr. Nelson (referred by my dentist) to get a second opinion. Dr. Nelson saw me immediately and took a 3D scan which evidenced that my whole left sinus cavity was filled with infection. The smell of sulfur was overwhelming, the pain in my head and face was at a level 8-9 at all times. Dr. Nelson put me on an antibiotic and performed surgery 2 days later to check for contamination in the bone graft and clear the infection. Immediately following his procedure I was so pleased!! I had no more sulfur smell and the pain I had been dealing with for weeks had dissipated only leaving minor sensitivity from the new surgery. Reluctantly, I had to give Dr Nelson a call on a Saturday at 4pm because I was feeling a burning sensation in my mouth, which I believed was due to the strong antibiotic. He answered his phone right away, he was so kind and compassionate and he called me in a prescription to help with my burning mouth that had nothing to do with the surgery. He was so communicative that one pharmacy was closed and he took the time to call me and ask which other pharmacy I preferred. My mouth settled down immediately. On Monday, I called his office to see if I could move my followup appointment to be seen by him sooner than Wednesday. I spoke to his office staff and even though he wasn't in until Wednesday, his office staff were so pleasant and helpful. Literally a minute after hanging up with his office, Dr Nelson called me right back. He was with his family driving to Joshua tree and couldn't have been more kind, compassionate and I told him there was no problem and i would see him on Wednesday. In closing, I just finished both of my followups with Dr Nelson today. His staff is wonderful and caring. I'll be seeing him again in June to finish the work started by the other surgeon. I am hopeful that I dont need any more dental work done as far as implants, however if I do, Dr. Nelson will be the first and only doctor I would call. I couldn't recommend him more highly, a true professional and gentleman. Thank you so much Dr. Nelson! Penny

She also told me that some patients don't check because they are hoping the dentist makes a mistake and doesn't account for their visit to avoid paying. Didn't appreciate the insinuation.
