I've been meeting to get back here since we had such a great time last year. Unfortunately this visit wasn't great. I'd been looking forward to their breadsticks again but this time they were served in a bowl instead of a plate so all the butter and olive oil just pooled and made the undercooked breadsticks soggy and doughy. We did have the calamari this time and we all really liked it. Super crispy and a nicely spiced sauce. My husband had the blackened mahi sandwich. It was neither blackened nor completely cooked through. It was such a busy night the waiter didn't stop by to check on us so we didn't have an opportunity to send it back to cook a bit more. We also had two pizza that needed about another 2 minutes in the oven. I'm sure most of the issues stemmed from it being a busy Saturday night. We may revisit but certainly won't go out of our way to come back. read more

Thirsty Turtle Tavern is a restaurant, bar, and pizzeria located on Grape St. in Whitehall. They are open Sun - Thu 11AM - 11PM and Fri - Sat 11AM - 12AM. The menu offers a unique twist on traditional pub dining. While you'll find classic favorites like wings and burgers, the restaurant also features tavern style pizzas and sushi. My friends and I dropped in for the first time last Thursday. Overall, it was a mixed experience. Some of the dishes were well executed and enjoyable, while others fell short of expectations. We started with Chipotle honey tavern wings, Wisconsin cheese curds, and nachos. I also had a crock of French onion soup. The wings were sweet, crispy, and easily the standout. The cheese curds were decent but slightly under-fried. The nachos were awful, with barely any toppings and mostly crushed, bottom of the bag chips. The French onion soup was hot, flavorful, and topped with onion straws. After the appetizers I moved onto the BBQ pulled pork mac & cheese. It's made with a five cheese sauce, macaroni, pulled pork, and seasoned breadcrumbs. While it sounded promising, the flavors didn't quite come together. It was decent, but not something I'd order again. One of my friends ordered the chicken vodka dream, a much better choice than mine. The hand breaded cutlet, homemade vodka sauce, fresh mozzarella, and pesto made for an awesome sandwich. The sweet potato fries were undercooked and bland, but the sandwich more than made up for it. Service was great overall. Tyler was attentive and very helpful with the menu, and the manager checked in a few times, which is always appreciated. The only downside was timing. Appetizers took awhile, and entrees followed almost immediately after. Pickup is available, but there is no delivery. Happy hour is Mon - Fri 3PM - 6PM. From La La Land (2016) Ryan Gosling: "Can you believe that they turned it into a Samba-tapas place?! Samba-tapas. Pick one, you know, do one right." This is exactly how we felt at the Thirsty Turtle. In fact, the name gives you the impression that they have lots of great drink options but you'll find they offer not more than the average typical options you'd see at any dive bar in the valley. Lots of Pizza options, lots of handheld options, lots of Sushi options??? It's like the cheesecake factory had a bougie baby. We tried several dishes and none of them seemed to be inspired. They weren't bad, per se, but they were average. The poke bowl was ok. The soups were ok. The fries were ok. The handhelds were ok. The brussel sprout appetizer was actually under average (dry, lacking sauce, and overcooked). The ambience in the place is actually pretty nice. There are tons of TVs if you're interested In sports. However, if you don't want the loud music to drown out your conversation, you will want to pick area as far from the bar to the left and right. Those areas don't have speakers. If you have a large group that needs a lot of cuisine options then perhaps this could be a good place for you to go. But for the two of us, we would prefer to go to a sushi place for sushi, a burger place for burgers, and a pizza place for pizzas. Pick one and do well. read more

A group of friends and I went in here on a Sunday afternoon. One of them had just been there on Friday and truly loved it. I can see why! I don't think I've ever seen a sports bar have as extensive of a sushi menu as this (or ANY sushi actually!) and it was sooo fresh and delicious! Two of my friends got that and shared with us. It was a busy Saturday afternoon - it's a good sign, and good for business. We had a draught and a tavern mojito - both fine. The guacamole needed more flavor but OK (maybe add jalapenos?). It's a deep bowl and the cushions don't support much so it was difficult to see inside the guac bowl. My mushroom Swiss burger was very lean (cooked medium)- not juicy at all so it was difficult to swallow. I would have asked for a turkey burger if it was available. The side salad was good. My wife said the black bean burger was good. I asked for Cholula but they didn't have any - just house made hot honey garlic and an aoli or sriracha. read more

Waitress was great, but ordered the west coast burger med-well. When it came to the table the bottom bun was so soggy and nasty. Waitress took it back and brought me out the burger with a new bun. When I started to eat it I realized it was rare and tried to just eat the outside parts since i was hungry until I was too grossed out to eat anymore. read more

First two visits here were good. Buffalo chicken salad, boneless wings and some sushi options are good. There are enough TV's for sports and fair drink prices. Last Sunday's visit was not that good. We ordered pizza with extra sauce. It came with extra cheese. A manager came over and we were asked if we would like another pie or take it back. We asked for a replacement (waited 10 minutes) and it almost looked the same, a lot of cheese and little sauce. We ate one cut each and left the rest. Overall service was good . Will go back, but not order the pizza. read more

This is a great get together with friends place. The menu is expansive with something for everyone. The staff is fantastic and the on duty manager introduced herself and checked in on us a few times as well to ensure our experience. Happy hour only applies to the bar and high top tables, so be prepared to pay $3 more per drink if you sit five feet beyond this imaginary line. We arrived as a party of five for an after work happy hour. $4 for one sushimi (or sushi,the jury is still out on what happened), chicken that tasted like fish, but the fries were decent. The waiter was very nice and tried to explain things but ended up confusing us more... something about a "third party sushi guy" which should not be confused with the "burrito guy." Also wasn't sure what beers they had. This restaurant can't decide what its speciality is so it seemed to settle with subpar across the board. Overpriced, no theme, dirty plates, and the weirdest playlist of music I've heard since my Dawson's creek era. With so much competition in the area, it's safe to skip this place. read more

The food was really good. Truly enjoyed everything we ordered and we ordered a lot for the table. Our server was good. Checked in with us often. The woman who sat us was not great/smart. We had someone with a rollator and she wanted to seat us in a booth. We asked for a table so she then tried to seat us by weaving in and out of tables at the furthest part of the room. The rollator could not fit through. She seemed oblivious. The place is a sports bar clearly. If I put my head on a swivel I could view 19 tvs. Every single tv was turned to a sport. No other choice. Fine. But then show at least one or two women sports. Nope. All 19 tvs were turned to men's sports. It alienates women to be honest. Now the food wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the fact that our table was checked on NINE times. Literally before we even took our first bite of an appetizer a manager came and asked if everything was okay. I understand wanting to touch tables but this was excessive, it became a joke for my table. Not a good way to start a new business. For opening just a few weeks ago you'd think you'd have friendly staff and service that makes you want to come back, right? Was told the wait was 30 minutes for party of 7, waited more than an hour and every time I went to the host and ask how much longer, felt that the host didn't really care to seat us. Four of us like to go out once a week for lunch and catch-up time, we thought we would try this new restaurant. Hostess friendly, when walking to table, we passed the bar, and two bartenders greeted us with smiles and a welcome. Our waiter Ethan was friendly and attentive. We all enjoyed our food. Went here one time to try it with my wife and kids. Everything was decent until my 4 year old son chomped down on a chunk of porcelain in his food. It was clear as day it was porcelain chipped off of a dish or something and somehow ended up in his food. Our waitress quickly seemed to become avoidant after we made a complaint to her (we fully understand it's not her fault). The manager on duty was nice enough and comp'd the entree that was affected but he said that was all he could do and that we should call Todd the general manager the next day. We've called several times, left a message, and he never bothered to call us back. In a day and age where people are sue happy over every little thing, you'd think someone there would be a little quicker to address this instead of ignoring it completely. What a great experience. From the hostess multitasking with a friendly smile to the GM sitting and genuinely chatting us up. Our server, Lea, was exceptional. Was meeting a friend that I haven't seen in a long time so we wanted a place we could sit , have a few drinks, dinner and not be rushed out. I looked online and saw Fridays and Saturdays were no reservations which ended up getting right in at 5:20. We asked for a high top table and was seated to the left side of the bar near the window. The waitress was super sweet. We weren't immediately ready for a drink because we were catching up. About 10 minutes went by and the third time the waitress stopped by (we ordered one). We DID tell her we haven't seen each other for several months and I jokingly asked what time they close and said we pronounced will be here until then and she laughed. She brought the drinks which were delicious and a great price because of happy hour. We weren't quite ready for our appetizer or meal, but again, she approached us a few times so we ordered our appetizer. We chose the guac and chips which was made at our table. The young man was excellent and the flavor was perfect! we DID order the bow tie pasta salad which was absolutely amazing. My friend. When the waitress asked how everything was, my friend ordered a second drink, I wasn't done either mine at that point and we weren't immediately ready still eating our salads. Shortly the manager, a young woman stops by to ask how everything was. This wasn't unusual and said excellent. Again, we are approached a very short time later at this point I order another drink, my second. Within a few minutes, the manager stops back to tell us the table is needed at 8 pm (at this time it's 7:40) for a reservation. I looked at her and said I know for a fact online it said no reservations on Fridays and Saturdays and we are still eating AND spending money. We are enjoying conversation. She said I know, but it's a few tables here and they need our table. She then goes to the table next to us, two women around our age and tell them as well. They were there the same amount of time as we were. She came back over to us and we weren't immediately ready like we aren't ready to leave and she said they will find another table for us. Now at this point there are several other tables for the "reservation" and we shouldn't have had to move. So, we had no choice. They moved us to another table where we continued our meal and conversation for about 40 minutes. They took the appetizer off as a courtesy. The point of my review, everything was great up to that point. That was handled poorly by a young manager. If the tables were reserved, they should have never put us there in the first place. I actually never felt this way nor have EVER written a review but felt this needed to be addressed. it definitely put a damper on the experience. read more
