Wow! Hidden gem in Raleigh. Was just visiting area for two days when we stopped in for a late breakfast. It has a very hip vibe, a place you could sit for hours with a friend. My niece had a breakfast burrito and I had a bagel with all kinds of good stuff, including spinach. The food was absolutely amazing. The counter guys were friendly and attentive. This coffee house is a place that is unlike any coffee house I've ever visited. As a self proclaimed coffee snob, I was very impressed with the caliber of this beautiful brew. The pasties are incredible as well. The decor far exceeds any coffee house I've ever seen. It draws you in to sit a spell; enjoy each sip while chatting with others. Parents bring their children and they enjoy drink specialties geared just for them. Pets are welcome always. It's hard to believe that after living in Raleigh for 12 years I just made it to Third Place. The parking situation (lack of) always turned me off. With $10 in hand from my Offline Raleigh deal, I told myself to be patient and headed over before work. I went on a Wednesday morning at 8 and, miraculously, there was parking in the four spots they have for pick up! Be aware the spots are pretty narrow. I was greeted upon walking in and the barista walked me through the menu as I was indecisive. I ordered a medium vanilla latte, extra hot, and a BLGT. This toasted (sesame) bagel had bacon, spinach (too much!), goat cheese and tomato. I'd order it again and ask for less spinach, and probably get the Michaels English muffin. My drink was the right temperature and wasn't too sweet. I picked up a bagel with cream cheese for my boss and she said it was good. I didn't grab an interior photo, but they have different "stalls" set up with tables along the wall sectioned off by dividers. They would make good work spots during the day. read more

I stumbled into this place after I finished getting my hair cut at the 5 points barber shop. When I walked in I recognized the gentlemen behind the counter as the guy that helped me locate the barber shop earlier that morning and he recognized me as well. I ordered a coffee and a breakfast burrito which had eggs, cheese, pico de gallo, spinach, and I added bacon and avocado. I sat on a leather loveseat next to the coffee making station and sipped my coffee while I waited for my burrito. The coffee station had oat, almond and half and half as well as cinnamon, honey and various other sweeteners. I went with honey and oat milk. When my burrito was ready the other gentlemen behind the counter apologized for it taking a while and explained that one of the 2 elements in their stove blew last evening so everything was taking twice as long to cook. I wasn't in a hurry and I didn't think I had been waiting long anyway so I said "no worries" and sat down to eat. This place is exactly why I love and adore Raleigh. Tucked in the heart of Five Points, parking can be a bit tricky, but I lucked out with one of the spots reserved for the cafe in the lot next door. I was greeted by a sweet pup on the patio, and the girls behind the counter (also both named Allison!) were super friendly when I walked in. Alli and Allison knew the names of probably three quarters of the people that walked through the door in the three hours I spent here, giving you a small town feel in a pretty big city. There's a variety of seating options, free WiFi and tons of outlets which makes this place great for working. The noise level is anywhere from quiet to loud just depending on how many people are there. I never had any trouble with conference calls. I tried the English muffin with bacon, egg and cheese for breakfast. The English muffin had to be homemade because it was so soft on the inside but crisp and seasoned on the outside. Perfect ratio of bacon to eggs to ooey gooey cheese. To drink I got an iced americano with vanilla flavoring - it was the perfect level of sweetness to balance out the salt of the breakfast sandwich! The straws are even eco-friendly (just be very gentle with them). This is a bit out of the way for me, but I will definitely be back for the people watching and awesome food and coffee! read more

One might assume that parking would be pretty annoying along this one-lane strip, but I've been here four times and have always managed to find that one space right in front of the shop. Maybe I'm just lucky when it comes to coffee? I must be to have found a place like this. Everything about Third Place is relaxed. The atmosphere is so mellow that it charms me into having a seat and people-watch instead of doing the old "grab and go." There's lots of room for that too. I've seen it packed, but never so crowded that not everyone gets a seat. A disco ball hangs from a ceiling adorned with retro lamps and track lighting. You can buy tea pots, kombucha, coffee beans, magazines, a wooden duck, a mannequin head wearing party hats, and light food, among other things. At the counter is an idol in a barrel. Set it free and it shows you its immense man meat. No...not joking. Today I'm having an iced, cold brewed 12 oz coffee laced with two espresso shots. It's smooth and foamy with a creeping kick that I'm expecting to feel more and more as the minutes tick by. It's washing down a bacon and egg asiago bagel sandwich. The egg was wholly uninviting, like processed balony out of a plastic pack, but the bacon was perfect, as was the bagel. The outside seating is plentiful and just as laid back as the interior, but never seems to lure me in. Maybe I enjoy the easy music. It could be the never ending flux of pretty girls haunting the place. No idea, but there's always time to try it out. I don't see this fine business leaving us any time soon. read more

Small coffee shop but a regular crowd of folks here getting their morning caffeine fix to stay and to go. A few tables inside and a couple tables outside, too. My latte was nicely prepared and had a good foam. The coffee was good. I also read that the breakfast burrito was the thing to do here, so I got one of those too. Very nicely stuffed with eggs and cheese and spinach and probably some more. Very hot and very filling. A nice place to hang out with your laptop for a while. read more

Third place has a bit of mismatch charm which I appreciate. I've been here twice so far. The coffee is pretty decent. I didn't really enjoy my cortado but the smoothies are delicious and the 'plethora' sandwich is very good. The place is on the quiet side and there are a few parking spaces on the same side of the street a few feet past it. If your in the five points area I'd give it a try. read more

I've been here several times for morning meetings. Parking is usually pretty good, after 9 Glenwood Ave allows street parking till 4pm and it reopens at 6pm. Their coffee drinks are always amazing and made pretty fast. I enjoy their lattes and coffee iced or hot. On nice weather days the outdoor seating is nice but there's several cozy seating options inside. I also enjoy their bagel sandwiches. Usually get the sausage and egg sandwich on mornings when I don't have time to make anything at home. I love how they support local artist and usually have a selection of prints and jewelry for sale. read more

I have been here before, but it was long enough ago that I forgot they never really have what I wanted as far as vegan nosh goes. The place is bustling and obviously great for those that live in the neighbor- the barista knew the names of those in front and behind me in line. I went thinking I could get a vegan burrito but the breakfast one has had egg. I think one review makes it seem like a vegan breakfast burrito is an option which is why I have made this mistake many times! So I opted instead for a bagel w just tomato and avocado. I was a bit hungover and groggy, so I didn't do the math when I paid but as I waited my 20 minutes for the bagel (!) I was able to piece it together. I got way overcharged. My coffee was 2.45, vegan muffin 3, then somehow my bill was over $11. So around $5 for my bagel w avo and tomato - real rip off. Once I got my $5 bagel, they gave me the wrong one, but thankfully I could see mine being made and it was up next. The muffin was delicious, but hopefully I will remember next time I am in town that this is not the place for vegan breakfast... muffin, yes, but a heftier breakfast, nah! read more

I stopped by Third Place this past weekend as a Sunday treat. I was craving a baked good of some sort, and knew that this shop was a place whose food I still wanted to try! The interior is pretty small, but there were plenty of open tables when I came in. I wasn't looking to stay, but I would imagine that this would be an okay place to study (it wasn't the quietest, at least on Sunday afternoon). The line was short and moved quickly, so it seemed like the staff were pretty efficient. I ordered a cheese (asiago, I think?) scone and an iced espresso -- my favorites! The cashier handed me the scone right away and I only had to wait for the espresso for about a minute since they made it immediately after I ordered. The quick service is definitely a plus. The espresso, however, was just okay. Nothing exceptional about it and nothing necessarily wrong with it -- just okay. The scone was pretty good (I mean, how can you go wrong with dough with cheese in it), but I was still underwhelmed. It tasted more like a cross between a roll and cornbread, but less flavorful and moist. It didn't have the consistency that scones usually have, which was disappointing. Still, though, I ate it all because why not! Overall, this place is an A-OK coffee shop in the neighborhood. It didn't knock my socks off, but it served its role as a place to pick up a quick coffee and snack. Third Place used to be java mecca for my friend (a daily user) even though it was more than several miles and minutes out of her way. When visiting her, I knew I could always count on being dragged along to the Third. Each time it was a hit and miss experience for me. Catching attitude from the staff AND patrons for this or that. Not being able to absorb the menu while in line cause the menu was too far away to read while standing in what used to be a long line. for a long time. By the time you get to the front, you gotta decide, cause now the crabby regulars are breathing on your neck, hot flames of fire behind you. Forget it. Just gimmie a cookie and a-a-h well, coffee. Watch them sneer, the evil tattooed girl, or the loopy did too much drugs when I was 20 and now I'm 50 guy. You pick. Maybe the umpteenth visit, the gal with the horn rims will sneer-smile at you to make you feel better. It used to be that the pastries were worth the hassle and humiliation. Not anymore. Now, they rank right up with Hereghtys as has-beens. Erratic service, coffee, food, quality AND all the attitude or indifference you can stand for free. (after 5 years of tolerating indifference to downright rudeness it was time to move on) Yelp to the rescue. Since then, I have discovered the competition and quality of good coffee and friendly baristas are not merely a pipe dream, but a reality. I was there on a weekday during the middle of the day so parking on the street was fine, I also saw they have a few parking spaces that they share with Lily's pizza. I got an iced tea and their breakfast burrito. The breakfast burrito was tasty and huge, I could only eat half of it. I feel like for a coffee shop they have quite a few great food options from breakfast, to pastry, to an afternoon snack. The staff was friendly and since it was a weekday at an odd time, there was no wait at all and everything was served up fairly quickly. I also ended up ordering a chai which was good, but not anything amazing. I'm looking forward to heading in and trying out more of their breakfast options. read more

This coffee shop is in our neighborhood and being a small business, we loved supprting it but our last visit was our last. We had family in town so there was 8 of us and we walked over to Third Place. The only employees were 3 teenage girls. I knew already that one of the coffee machines was broken and the wait would be longer which was fine. However, it was almost an hour before the last of us got our coffee. On top of this several items in our order were wrong. Towards the end I just stood by the counter because we had two lattes with non-dairy milk that were still not made. I watched as the as one of the girls poured regular whole milk into the pitcher and steamed it. I asked her if that was for the two lattes and she said yes. I advised her that I had ordered oat milk because of allergies. The other girl that was working gave me a huge attitude telling me that it was not on the little sticky note that they take all the orders on. The girl who took my order was standing right there and I said, I specifically asked her what non-dairy milk they had before ordering the oat milk so whether she actually wrote it down or not, I don't know. The girl making the coffee poured out the milk but of course didn't bother to use a different pitcher or rinse it before pouring in the oat milk which for anyone with allergies is a bad idea. But the final straw was, as I stood waiting, the girl who took my order walked over to the little bar area where all the food to make sandwiches is and put a handful of shredded cheese in a bowl. She then began to to use her fingers to eat the cheese, literally putting her fingers in her mouth right there at the food prep area! Yuck! So unsanitary. If you're going to eat and especially if you're putting your hands in your mouth, do it in the back room or somewhere out of sight and wash your hands after. She didn't bother to wash her hands by the way. So it's a shame because we did enjoy walking there from home to have a coffee and a sandwich and although the service had started declining some time ago, it had never been this bad. I was flabergasted by the lack of organization, rudeness and of course completely unsanitary behavior around the food. read more

Was looking for a quick breakfast on my way to the studio and drove right by the place. I turned around, then did a youey to get back to it... parking was scarce, so scarce I had to park somewhat illegally. The funny part about that is... the place wasn't that crowded - maybe 1/2 the seats taken, but still no place to park, legally. I ordered my cappuccino double shot and a breakfast burrito with bacon. The coffee was pretty good, but the wait for the breakfast burrito... wow... seemed like forever, I know it wasn't but still. There were at least four people working, maybe five, but it looked like they would get in each others way because there's not room for four people behind the counter. When orders came up someone just yelled out to the crowd what was on the counter. When my burrito did finally come up, I was quick to grab it and head out the door so I could get to the studio and eat. My receipt was very politicized and potentially polarizing... everyone has an opinion, whether I agree with it or not, they're free to express it. Many folks may make a decision not to return, though, based on the opinions expressed by the ownership, management and employees. I'm not one of those people, I just like a good breakfast even if the service is somewhat slow. btw, the burrito was pretty darn awesome! Cheesy, gooey, yummy! read more

My favorite coffee shop and I have been to quite a few! I end up here 3/5 mornings before work. The staff is always super friendly and the coffee is consistent. Not to mention, they offer refills on their iced coffee unlike some coffee shops around town. Haven't tried the food but it always smells and looks amazing. And I will say that half of Raleigh must agree. The line occasionally is out the door, but they get everyone in and out very quickly. read more
