UPdate- walked by this place several times in the last few months, it's summer 2020 and the world is on fire- yet their doors are wide open, blasting A/C onto an empty hot sidewalk. Finally I went inside and told the workers that not only is this terrible for the environment, but I believe it's now illegal. He agreed! Another worker came over and said Yes, they felt bad about it- but the ORDER CAME FROM CORPORATE. They are just workers obeying their bosses. They gave me a card with corporates address on it and urged me to write, which I will - but till then they will get none of my business. read more

Theory seems to be the only store with tailored professional clothing for women. I went to all the major dept stores and outside of high end designers, there was nothing mid price besides Theory. So I've purchased at least 4 suits, 2 coats, 8 pants and several tops from Theory in the last 10 months as I started dressing for work again. The clothing is well made, and classic. The staff in the meatpacking store are amazing; helpful and very patient, particularly the guy Ocean and the woman Jasmine (I think). They remember what I like and bring suggestions, which is great. A couple of other sales persons were a bit pushy but now I ask for these two. I continue to go to this store even though I browse in the Hudson Yards store where the staff is not as helpful. read more

I love Theory something awful. Simple, chic, gorgeous construction, flattering cuts, and killer style, something about it always appeals to me. Some say it's drab (there's an alarming amount of black and gray in every collection), but really it just suits me, and its begun to take up quite a percentage of my wardrobe these days. The bi-annual Theory sample sale is the most dangerous time of the year for my credit card - seriously, I sort of black out, then $500 later I'm not really sure how I acquired this gorgeous wine colored cashmere hoodie, or that amazing grey/green poplin blazer. However, I can keep control in the store (or in the many department stores where it's sold) because I think it's more than bit overpriced, and I just won't pay retail for it. This is their largest retail outlet, but I echo Timothy B that I'd like to see more interesting bits of the collection here at their flagship. But, it's no matter, come sale time you'll find me here (or at Saks or Barney's) with a glazed look in my eyes and foaming at the mouth. Theory is one of my all-time favorite designers, and this has been my favorite store in the in the country for Theory since they opened. They are one of the first stores to get the new collections, such as "38" and even some of the AG or rag and bone pieces. They just recently remodeled some of the center sections and the store has a more open feel to it. The fitting rooms have a lot of room, although there are not quite enough of them on sale days. The mirrors are fantastic though. What I love about this store is the sales people and the selection. First on selection. I have found pieces at this location I have found nowhere else. I will go to each one of the stores in Manhattan and in California all in the same weekend. I have found pieces here I could not find at department stores as well. If you ask, sometimes they will honor prices that department stores have on sale. For example on occasion Bloomingdales will have a friends and family sale that applies to Theory. If they have the same exact items at Bloomingdales, some of the sales people here will match. That goes a long way towards Good will with repeat customers like myself. The sales people are super friendly and very helpful. I have never felt any of them were pushy or trying to oversell. I have found them to be honest and candid about fit and styling. The only thing I wish they did more of is emailing clients when you pieces came in or sales were happening like many of the stores and designers that are local. For example, Isabel Marant sends me a PDF with all of their new styles and will hold pieces. I would love it at the sales people did that here with some of the more special attire. Over all though even the security people are super friendly and I know them as well! Feels like I am walking into my own closet when I come here. I would like to note that David Morales of the Meatpacking Theory Store goes beyond expectations of a salesperson He considers everything that is needed and takes the extra effort to make certain you are getting the piece that you needed. He is extremely professional and knowledgeable of the stock at Theory as well. Next time I am in NYC, I plan to go there to have him help me with my wardrobe. I am a huge fan of Theory, but I wasn't here to shop - I was here to support Runway to Win. Everyone was there and I mean all the fashion industry people: Anna Wintour, Scarlett Johansson, Diane, Tory, Alex, Prabal, Jason, Olivier, Derek, Karlie (wore a sick dress by J.Mendel), Vera, Georgina, Keren, Joseph, Lazaro, Jack, Karolina, Chanel (I am a fan, but I wasn't into her look!), Joan (She's much prettier in person), Russell and I believe those were the only people that I saw that were there. Aerin, Solange and Tina were also there! It was a bit cramped and the merchandise definitely didn't help the space. Overall beautiful and successful event! read more

I am one who leans towards labels that are subtle, understated with clean lines that is a bit off kilter in design. To elaborate, my absolute fave designer's are PRADA, Helmut Lang (owned by same company that owns Theory), Jil Sander and Barbara Bui. All these designers offer understated, yet classy and timeless collections. It also helps that they fit me like a second skin. Theory, IMHO, meets my criteria in terms of subtleness, perfect fit and clean classic. As much as I like Theory's designs, it pains me to pay so much for so very simple designs. The one category I find that Theory fails in is the "distinct design" category because unlike Helmut Lang or Jil Sander who both uses angles and cuts in their designs, Theory is very straightforward. I will go as far as saying that Theory designs are oft times, bland. Of course, I will jump on a bargain if I see it because you can never go wrong with Theory, especially for work. read more

Sigh...if only I could afford to buy everything here. The tailoring is exquisite, and personally, I love love LOVE the color palette (blacks, grays, whites - so chic). Although I should say that if I did buy everything here, my wardrobe might lack a bit of ooph - the kind you'd get from a punchy accessory, for example. Everything here is the kind of thing that incorporates seamlessly into your current wardrobe - perfect black pants that go with every top you own, a just-oversized-enough sweater to complement your skinny jeans and flats, or that perfect racerback tank top that I see on everyone, but can never find for myself. I rarely pay full price for things here though - online sample sales usually have a great selection, and I found some amazing pants at Loehmann's at a great price. Still, an amazing designer, offering clean lines, understated elegance with simple points of interest to take the clothes far above boring. read more

Agreed Clark -- a great place for the basics. The plus for me was that it seemed as though everything was cut perfectly for my body. I'm probably going to end up buying a suit here pretty soon. I went for a fundraiser being help for a local non-profit. They offered 15% off everything, which basically paid for tax. I ended up buying a great pair of beige pinstriped slacks and came REALLY close to buying a navy-blue poly-spandex blend dress shirt to go with it. The problem was the pants were $200 and the shirt was $250. I had to pick one or the other. They also offer free alterations on everything you buy. They simply send you to Greenwich St Cleaners in the Village with a store voucher. If money were no object, this place would be the foundation of my wardrobe. Until then, I'll stick to vintage and consignment shops. read more

When looking for the perfect outfit for a very, VERY important date of mine, i was told to go to Theory. Of course, i went straight to the flagship store on Gansevoort. I needed something edgy, stylish, and not just modern, but futuristic. I was immediately greeted by the cutest associate there, Jacob. And thank God for him. He listened to the event details and what i was looking for, took a look at my own style and went to work. I had 3 options in 5 minutes. All three options were PERFECT and it was the hardest decision of my life. With Jacob's honesty in how the pieces fit me, and working with my budget I ended up with the most ridiculous amazing outfit (3 versatile pieces) for around 600. Perfect!!! Jacob made my shopping experience not only totally fun and entertaining, but efficient and easy. and did i say fun? THANK YOU!! You're my new personal shopper/bestie!!!! read more

Buyer beware, they only do exchange or store credit even if you have a receipt. It is not clearly stated anywhere except for a very small plaque with even smaller writing. It appears to be purposefully done that way, so you're stuck if something doesn't fit, which was my case. read more

Great label!! I am a slim guy and it is virtually impossible for me to find pants/jeans that really fit me well. Theory essentially saved me without exaggeration. The product comes in many colors and they change a small detail every season but most importantly fit is the same! If you are having trouble with really good quality slim fit (not skinny) bottoms go straight to Theory. Jackets, shirts and Ts are well designed for slim body as well. Same goes for suits. As far as the particular stores is concerned, the staff is friendly and helpful; the selection is not huge but you will not leave the store empty-handed for sure. The prices are affordable for the outlook and quality that the brand offers. Basically you get what you pay for and here you get first of all a great style and comfortable fit. So don't complain; if you are not happy with it don't buy it; it's that simple. read more

I like Theory much the same way I like Calvin Klein. Most of these things make for good basics in plain colors that you can then later mix with more interesting pieces. If you were to buy an entire wardrobe from Theory I imagine it would be pretty boring. There clothing is well made for the price point and they do cut things fairly well. I stopped in this store right when it opened and who did I literally bump into but Anna Wintour and her entourage, she even half smiled at me, so I have a happy connection to the Meatpacking location =) read more

My wife and I noticed the store this past Sunday. Very clean looking lines in the jackets. She's been a fan of Theory for 4-5 years now since living in the Pacific Northwest, she'd shop at Nordstroms and buy as much as she could though their selection being excellent was limited. Now that there is a larger selection, I think she'll be spending 3-4K every few months or so. Their clothes for the style are really inexpensive when you compare to a Dolce and Gabbana suit that costs in excess of $1600.00 or a pair of Christian Louboutin's for $899 and above that she'll on occasion spend. She's not one to shop sales since she wants to wear the newer looks now, not later, plus she hates shopping amongst those that really can't afford to buy & are in her way hunting for bargains. Reminds her of the groupon and happy hour shoppers always complaining about the cost of something and always wanting a bargain. Either you can afford it or you can't. Also the selections and sizes are limited in sales. Theory and Vince are two of her many fav labels and they're both in the meatpacking district so we won't have to walk far. Really looking forward to finding that sales person my wife will feel comfortable with as she gets to know my wife's style so that she can call when new selections arrive. Theory's new Meatpacking District emporium is a beautiful store; it showcases the brand's chic, minimalist mens- and womenswear quite nicely, and leaves room for skincare, candles, jeans, and gifts that complement Theory's own offerings. The clothes are flattering, but they don't have much personality, which I find makes it hard to justify the expense. read more

Be warned. Bought suits and they sent me to a dry cleaner for tailoring. No in-house tailor. The cleaner is unprofessional and incompetent. Promised by phone to reposition cuttons after shortening sleeves and wouldn't do it. Wanted to short-cut everything. Worst still, when I returned the clothes, the salespeople couldn't have cared less -- not apology, no concern. Theory clothes are great, but stick with Saks or Bloomies! read more

Theories clothing is just so perfect and appropriate. they have attire for any occasion. I like their Leather jackets, and their tops and shorts. I think their clothing is how clothes should be " worn". You can't go wrong. However they can not beat my dear Marcy Marc. Not as innovative as Marc, just very clean casual and expected. read more

The staff at this store are snooty, extremely unprofessional, and treat their customers with disdain. I went in twice on successive days, first to try on the suit trousers, and the next day to buy them. On the first day, the 'girl' to whom I had spoken on the phone earlier in the day made it obvious to me that she and her sales colleagues had been discussing between themselves the manner in which I talk (I have a foreign accent), and she carelessly greeted me in her impression of my accent when I first met her in person. I kindly let this slide. Also, none of the girls working in the store smiled or greeted me as I entered the store and browsed, and merely looked me up and down. The clothes are beautiful, and I decided to ask the sales girl to hold them for me for 24 hours while I checked to find a better deal in a department store. I was also told that they offered "complimentary in-house tailoring"; as well they should if they want to be highly regarded within the retail market. I went in the next day before closing only to be greeted with the same silly impression of my speaking voice, and the definite feeling that she, the sales assistant, was somehow doing me, the customer, a big favor by helping me out with these clothes. Her attitude of superiority was palpable. Also, she had not kept the clothes aside for a full 24 hours, and had to run around quickly to acquire them....I could have gone in only to find that another man had bought the pants I wanted. Then I was told while standing at the register that, in fact, no, there is no in-house tailoring, they give you a voucher to get the tailoring done at a nearby tailor's for free....I was not given the full story the day before, and, furthermore, if I'm spending hundreds of dollars, why on earth should I have to walk to somewhere else to get my tailoring done? When I lost my temper and challenged her in front of her colleagues about her vile lack of professionalism, she did not even have the grace of character to admit her fault and apologize, and merely cited "living in London for a while" as her excuse for perhaps having done an impression of my voice while speaking to me. If you want to see where customers are not treated properly, buy clothes at Theory in the meatpacking district. Lovely clothes. Detestable sales assistants. read more

I wish I could give fewer stars. This review is not really a reflection of this store in particular as the staff was lovely and tried their best to help. This is a review of the TERRIBLE customer service I received from theory.com. I had been doing some Christmas shopping and had come across and item that was discounted on the site and thought I had scored! I love theory and was excited to have found the item on sale. When it received I was appalled at how poor the quality was. This sweater was so thin and the seams unfinished I could not believe the item was a theory piece, it looked more like something from Target. When I went to return the item the store staff tried to help but I was told I would need to call customer service which was a joke! They were rude and condescending and said that items from the site were sold "as is" which I have never heard of from a site selling new items. They essentially said that since you are not able to touch and feel the item that if you receive it and don't like it that is your problem not theirs. In a competitive online environment I literally can not believe these kinds of policies even exist when I could have bought the same item at a number of different department stores and I am wishing that is what I had done. I love the clothing, but I was treated like a potential criminal. Walked in, and saw one sales woman nudge another before walking over, and treated me with distrust the entire time. I, similar to many of you, liked the clean and classic design of Theory clothes. While I can afford the clothes, I can say with certainty that I will never, ever buy their clothes again. Here is why. I spent over $200 on a dress that had a tear in it not more than 6 months after I purchased it. I had to take it to my tailor to get it fixed. I also bought two beautiful suits for work. The first suit had a material that frayed. Little elastic pieces are now poking out of from ALL OVER the place. Theory told me that it was clearly an issue with my dry cleaner. Sounds a bit odd seeing that I've been using the same dry cleaner for YEARS and haven't had any issues with her when it comes to other clothes. The next suit had a pair of pants that ripped at work....yes, AT work in front of everyone. It was incredibly embarrassing and frustrating after owning it for less than a year. I spoke to several friends who own Theory and they either had the same issue or know someone who's had their pants rip. The worst part is that when I went back to the store to ask them what they could do for me seeing that I spent over $500/suit, the answer was NOTHING. Be warned, they will tell you that normal wear for a year could lead to such things happening. I'm not sure about anyone else out there but if I spend that much on something, I want it to be a timeless piece. Never shopping here again. read more

I have always liked Theory's menswear. The styles fit great if you are in shape and the suits coats and slacks are sold as separates which is awesome. But, what is especially great about this location is that the service in the store is exceptional! I bought three suits at this Theory location a few months back at an end of season clearance (30% off) and then unfortunately proceeded to leave the pants to one of the suits in a hotel in Washington. Kat, one of the store's best staff got on the phone and looked for a replacement pair of slacks until she found one. She talked to the clerk at a store in California and had them sent overnight the next day. Shortly thereafter, We went back to the store looking for a sleek tuxedo for our upcoming wedding. Kat found our sizes at another store, had them delivered to NYC the next weekend and then treated us like celebrities when we came in to the store to try them on. It was first class service for incredibly cool styles. And, she made us feel really special in the process. You can't go wrong shopping at this Theory. read more
