I was compelled to write my first Yelp review because of a restaurant I was so let down by partially because I found myself comparing it to Theodora. After eating at Theodora, I've really learned that the way the food looks does not give justice to the flavors that land on your palette. Trying a sauce that has a real smokey flavor or trying a piece of salt that's actually lime had me asking "am I too spoiled having had Theodora??".
I'd heard about Theodora from friends while dining at Miss Ada for my first time which happened to be around the same day the Eater vid came out so I booked a res for 4 at 9:30 that Sunday. Since then, I've been four more times in just over two months. The food is incredible, yes but the service, more specifically the people, are why I can't stop returning to this establishment.
Beginning with the food, upon our first visit we found ourselves trying pretty much everything and enjoying all of it but here are the main dishes we keep returning to--
Chicken - on a lineup full of heavy hitters chicken may sound underwhelming but I assure you it is anything but and is the constant during all of our visits.
Hiramasa - everything about this dish is beautiful (despite my poor camera work). The lime on there will make you do a double take when you notice which component it is and the sauce underneath it all is genuinely good enough that my gf and I shamelessly eat it with a spoon once the crudo is gone.
Trout - as a non-trout eater, this dish is f*****g ridiculous. This is the star of the meal for me. Get it. Doesn't matter. Brilliant.
Ricotta - not the biggest fan of ricotta but this is just straight up stupid. The honey, the pepper, all of it. Easy table pleaser.
Again, the food is fantastic but the people.. the people that work here are why we coming back. Our first time here we had some trouble deciding what to get and I asked our waitress her name so I could personally thank her for putting up with us and my friend involuntarily sang her name back to her (and nearly gawked at the fact she did it) and without hesitation our waitress then returned fire with a cadence of her own and immediately matched our energy and assuaged any awkwardness. When they brought the trout over they said "here she is" and same friend as above asked if "she" had a name to which we were introduced to "Troutiana"! There was even an item or two we mentioned amongst ourselves that our waiter/waitress overheard and brought out for us to try. Despite being a 9:45pm reservation on a Sunday night at the end of a full service, the people here made us feel like we were in our own world. I left indebted of the staff and in awe of the chefs.
Since then we were only to snag 9-9:30pm reservations and at no point at all did we feel like we were intruding or needed to wrap up or were in the way.. I truly cannot tell you how welcoming they made us feel despite it being past closing (they weren't staying open for us but still).
In parting, in a place that takes their food, appliances, and amenities very seriously they do an incredible job at making it feel like you're in your own (dream) living room. The staff pay attention to detail (without being overbearing) and seem to be just as happy, if not more, to be there than we are.
Thank you every single time. read more
