A great multipurpose outlet type store with apparel, pet necessities, home decor, office supplies, cookware, toiletries, and countless more! I can easily walk in here and spend an entire paycheck, it's terrible. There are SOOOO many necessities in this store and the prices are pretty fair and it's nice quality. If you're an outdoorsy person or into country living, Theisen's is your sanctuary. Seriously, there's at least ten things in this store everyone needs, even if you ain't 'bout that country life.

Theisen's is a really cool Farm and Home store. I wandered through here for a long time, just marveling at the selection of hardware, pet care, home repair, outdoor and other items. I ended up with an Iowa Hawkeye lunch box, but wish I would have bought the Muck Boots for an upcoming Earthwatch trip. The folks at checkout were super nice and the next time I'm in, I'll try to leave room in my suitcase so I can take more or their practical and well priced stuff home.

To the uninitiated, a farm and home store like Theisen's makes no sense. What are some of the things I have purchased over the years? Dog food and toys. Children's shoes. Men's trousers. Popcorn. Oh wait, the popcorn is free. Candy. ISU logo merchandise. Tools. Paint. Hats. The list goes on and on, seemingly randomly. Ames doesn't seem to be a natural choice for such a store. Too urban and educated, you know. But I'm so happy Theisen's decided to locate here. Whenever I'm in Ames, Theisen's is on the list of essential visits right next to Hickory Park, Dutch Oven Bakery and Mucky Duck Pub. Theisen's has a vast array of merchandise. It's clean, well maintained and well organized. And it has a friendly and helpful staff.

2/3/26 12:15 p.m. We…read moreshop here almost once a week. If I could do 3.5 stars, I would. The store overall is always very well stocked. There are employees constantly making sure everything stays that way. Unfortunately, because of the mass quantity of stock, the quality is sometimes overlooked; mainly in the produce section. The produce can be hit or miss whether or not it's gone bad and just hasn't been pulled or is good with a few "bad apples". The samples are definitely a nice touch while shopping and the employees handling them tend to know about the products, thankfully. Some employees seem to do everything they can to avoid being asked a question, while others go out of their way to help you, so service can be hit or miss as well. The food court is great! Lol. The low prices for the food are awesome and the food tastes great, so win-win there! Overall, this is a clean store with quite a bit to choose from, I just wish the fresh produce was better kept up with as well as the employee interactions.

Historically, their competitive gas prices were one of the primary factors that made recommending a membership to friends and family an easy decision. This shift became more noticeable when they transitioned from offering U87 to U88, yet pricing comparisons are often still made against U87 rates elsewhere in town. As a result, the perceived savings are less compelling. In fact, the gas station near my home is currently offering fuel at nearly the same price without requiring a membership, which further diminishes the value proposition.

There's a now shuttered restaurant where my Sister had her rehearsal dinner and I sometimes passed Ames Surplus, which as it turns out has been folded into the 2-building complex that is called Jax Outdoor gear. The military surplus part of this store is not much more than a couple short aisles. Past that, Jax has loads of outdoor gear, fishing and hunting inventory, clothing, footwear, and even a corner for Boy and Girl scout supplies. It's all very high quality merchandise and a good value. I came in looking for some Carhartt pants, which they don't currently stock. I left very impressed and with a cool and nicely priced little Gerber knife. I found store staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I'll be back in Ames in a few months (or so), and I'm be sure to stop in again. I'm sure there will be new stuff to admire or goods that I missed during the last visit. And there's no need to drive all the way to Des Moines.

Once in awhile, you'll catch something for 4 for $1 or something (such as the Christmas candy canes they have on clearance right now), but everything in their store is $1. It makes it honestly pretty easy to shop since I'm never wondering about the price tag. This is a nice-looking Dollar Tree that has quite a bit of room on the inside. You can find name-brand items like Pop-Tarts and whatnot, but in some cases, their packaging/box size has been reduced to make it cost-effective to sell for a dollar. This store has stationary, automobile, hardware, some clothes, dishes, beauty supplies, cleaning supplies, lots of food including frozen food, party supplies, kids toys, books, kitchen gadgets, pregnancy tests, and more. I would very, very highly recommend Dollar Tree as the place to get party supplies. They have a plethora of color options and it's all very cheap. They have tablecloths, plastic silverware, plates, noisemakers, and lots of other stuff. It's seriously a fantastic way to do a "decorated" party on the cheap. I came here looking for pins for sewing, but they don't have any. In the past, I've come here for some of their kitchen supplies. Getting a strainer and measuring cups for a dollar is a fantastically good price. When I've come, it's usually clean-ish. It's not immaculate, but it's clean. Shelves are usually pretty organized, and it's not like stuff is strewn all over the place. Usually most things are in-stock and ready to be purchased. I like the parking lot. It's large and makes it easy to get around without fussing with horrible hills or bad traffic like the other dollar store in town. As a note, I don't think they have a bathroom here. For cyclists, they do not have a bicycle rack, but they have long, metal poles that support the outside of the building that you can lock your bike to. I've locked them there in the past without any issue. Final thoughts: It's a good place to pick up random items for $1. You have to make sure what you're buying is worth a dollar as, in some cases, it seems like you might be able to get some of these items cheaper elsewhere. As a whole, though, you definitely save money by shopping at Dollar Tree for lots of household supplies instead of going to another big box store. They don't have enough grocery selection to do all of your grocery shopping here, but they do have a lot of various household items. I would especially recommend this place to anyone moving into a new home who needs household supplies.
