2/3/26 12:15 p.m. We shop here almost once a week. If I could do 3.5 stars, I would. The store overall is always very well stocked. There are employees constantly making sure everything stays that way. Unfortunately, because of the mass quantity of stock, the quality is sometimes overlooked; mainly in the produce section. The produce can be hit or miss whether or not it's gone bad and just hasn't been pulled or is good with a few "bad apples". The samples are definitely a nice touch while shopping and the employees handling them tend to know about the products, thankfully. Some employees seem to do everything they can to avoid being asked a question, while others go out of their way to help you, so service can be hit or miss as well. The food court is great! Lol. The low prices for the food are awesome and the food tastes great, so win-win there! Overall, this is a clean store with quite a bit to choose from, I just wish the fresh produce was better kept up with as well as the employee interactions. read more

It is disappointing to see that Sam's Club is no longer the clear leader in fuel pricing within Ames. Historically, their competitive gas prices were one of the primary factors that made recommending a membership to friends and family an easy decision. This shift became more noticeable when they transitioned from offering U87 to U88, yet pricing comparisons are often still made against U87 rates elsewhere in town. As a result, the perceived savings are less compelling. In fact, the gas station near my home is currently offering fuel at nearly the same price without requiring a membership, which further diminishes the value proposition. read more

After 5 years in the Ames area and spending several thousand dollars at the Sam's during that time, it saddens me to write this review. Up until yesterday I would have recommended this location; however, after the extremely poor treatment and terrible experience from the rude employee, Patty, and another member of "the management team" I will be cancelling my membership and returning as much as I can. I have never been treated so rudely, poorly and condescendingly in one place before! Patty was so RUDE & when I went to "management team" member to express my concerns all they did was treat us even worse. read more

I bought a membership in January because of the ridiculous gas prices in Ames. Its pathetic. Right now the Ames average is $3.24, Sam's Club only beats that by a nickel $3.19. Sam's Club in ANKENY is $2.79. Fleet Farm in ANKENY is $2.84. I just hope I can get the Sam's Club membership cancelled before the auto-renewal kicks in. read more

Good place to get mass quantities of anything!! See pics. It's the pumpkin season now or soon. On weekends, they usually have samples during late morning through early afternoon. Clean. Family friendly. Friendly staff. Lot parking. Prices are ok. Sometimes you might get a bargain, others, it's pricier. Seems weird to rank a place like this. If you like Sam's anywhere, you'd probably like the other locations. But maybe I was spoiled to grow up with the Twin Cities' Sam's Club? There is no bakery at the Ames Sam's, it never pops up in the app so I really don't know what they carry or what is in stock, the gas lines are always wild and it's kinda tucked in the back corner of their lot, and I always find myself driving to Ankeny Sam's club to find what I want anyways. Sure makes me wish there was a Costco in Ames. I mean, no bakery?!?! that means no last minute birthday cupcakes or custom cakes (which by the way, are UNREAL at the MN Sam's). So nothing specifically wrong and I haven't had a poor experience...but it just could be better and I've experienced better! read more

Gas prices are wonky and close to the rest of the gas stations... idek if it's worth having the membership. Also DO NOT get the sushi. My husband just ate it yesterday and got a severe case of food poisoning. read more

It's Sam's! What's not to love???!!!! And on the weekends there are snack samples galore! Stock up on 5 months worth of toilet paper here. There's cool prices on all kinds of things like toys, clothing, DVDs, and all kinds of goodies. AND there's a student discount on memberships!!!!! read more

This is one of the worst Sam's Club / Walmart locations! Avoid this location if you want to prevent ruining the rest of your day. Customer service is nonexistent. Most workers at the customer desk have a demeaning attitude. They argue with customers relentlessly in the presence of both co-workers and customers. Managers when called upon to intervene tend to exhibit indifferent behaviors towards customers. Walmart was one of the case histories reviewed in my MBA classes. This is NOT how Sam Walton was able to grow his empire for the benefit of his heirs, shareholders and customers alike. Sam's Club - it might help to keep in mind that many of your customers are also minority shareholders through their 401(k) holdings. Suggestions to the corporate office: 1) top down - start with focusing your training program on GM's as the GM is your most important person who is responsible for creating the local culture at the store, 2) bottom up - train your people on customer service for a starter. read more

The Sam's club deli is a good place for a cheap meal. A drink and a pizza slice is a good choice if you want something quick. It's a very mediocre pizza though. read more

I had four items to purchase. Nobody around to clear or approve my alcohol purchase. Found someone who had to go get someone. She Leslie was walking towards my checkout and stopped and then went to help someone else. Finally she arrives and becomes cute and goes over my whole order. What do you want she says. She sees the alcohol and mocks me over my purchase. I tell her I don't have time for her games. She takes my alcohol off of my purchases. She decides she is not going to let me buy this. I grab it back. She runs off and I stand there for five minutes. Finally another associate shows up and she can't figure out what Leslie has done to my order. She recreates the order and no apology . She should be fired. read more

I was recently visiting Ames and decided on my way out of town to stop by Sam's club and buy a few grocerties.....well, believe it or not, I somehow locked my keys, cell phone and purse in the car! UGH. Just had my wallet. I went inside to the service desk and asked for help....I can't begin to say how helpful both Alex and Amanda at the front desk were in assisting me with calling GEICO and then waiting while the tow truck came to open the car door. Both were so helpful with allowing me to use their phones to call the insurance and calling my daughter which was the only phone number I knew. Thank you to Amanda and Alex!!! read more

I've been here multiple times and just got used to the small store size and poor selection of items, until the Ankeny store opened last year. Don't waste your time here and shop at the Ankeny location: bigger with optical, pharmacy, clothing and WAY WAY CHEAPER gasoline. read more

Never ever i have been profiled so badly..its so bad its actually hilariously insulting..picked up box of mangoes today.. didnt noticed there was sams guy working on the table next to me keeping an eye on me.. well i spilled the box in my cart so piled the mangoes in box instead of arranging them neatly.. my bad I guess how dare me.. well i walked around did my shopping paid on self kiosk..almost at the door about get my receipt scanned.. i hand comes from behind picked up 2 mangoes and said excuse me but u picked too many mangoes.. there should be only six and u got 8... i am perplexed but surprised and trying to comprehend what happened and trying to be calm...asked him are u sure did u checked other boxes? He was like yeah yeah all have 6 and it shd be by weight.. I again asked are u sure he is yeah i am lets walk to the last aisle if you are not sure.. i said yeah lets do it.. mind it this guy was arranging stuff on the same table he should have known.. we walk back.. irrespective of weights every every box had 8 not 6.. so yeah me (not wanting to go to color of skin but it is what it is, i am brown)...was followed all the way from last aisle to the door because dude instead of counting whats on the table looked at me and thought I am absolutely stealing extra mangoes .. again now imagine ur self walking to the door and someone take stuff out of ur cart because he thinks without proof that u r stealing something.. well thats a first for me in this club.. The bathrooms were absolutley disgusting and not well taken care of. Poop was running down the toilet seat dirt everywhere, garbage was over flowing, toilet paper paper towels the paper used for protection on the baby change table all gone dont go here please....... read more

I have shopped Sam's for years..Purchasing Booster club items and personal merchandise. I recently was informed the store in Ames will no longer carry popcorn oil in store...? You sell popcorn, popcorn salt, popcorn bags, and poppers and now all the sudden you will no longer carry oil, it will only be available online...Come on.. read more

They just could not find anyone that knew the password to the Kodak Picture Kiosk so that i could retrieve my order. They kept putting me off and looking for this mystical person that never arrived. Mean while my pictures were in the computer waiting to be printed and time ran out. The "cloud" is starting to look inviting when compared to the the repeated incompetence of the big box stores. read more
