About the only strange thing was the kids play area, it was filled with young guys - mid to late teens, and about 8-10 of them. They seemed to be hanging out in there, and when we came near, they made no attempt to move. I hadn't planned to use the play area unless it was amazing (with a good slide, etc), but since it wasn't I wasn't too disappointed, but it was strange and there was really no room for anyone to go in and play with their children.

It's not a huge Super Target, but it has what a Target should have, and it has it all at Target prices. They do a good job of keeping it clean and organized, and they always seem to have enough checkers so you don't get stuck waiting forever in line.

There's a now shuttered restaurant where my Sister had her rehearsal dinner and I sometimes passed Ames Surplus, which as it turns out has been folded into the 2-building complex that is called Jax Outdoor gear. The military surplus part of this store is not much more than a couple short aisles. Past that, Jax has loads of outdoor gear, fishing and hunting inventory, clothing, footwear, and even a corner for Boy and Girl scout supplies. It's all very high quality merchandise and a good value. I came in looking for some Carhartt pants, which they don't currently stock. I left very impressed and with a cool and nicely priced little Gerber knife. I found store staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I'll be back in Ames in a few months (or so), and I'm be sure to stop in again. I'm sure there will be new stuff to admire or goods that I missed during the last visit. Wow! Talk about great customer service and a wonderful and special experience! This summer, my…read morefiancé surprised me with a stop at Ames Silversmithing to pick out my engagement ring! He arranged with them to have a private viewing so we were the only ones there that was really special and kind of them to do. Kyle Youngberg made the experience so fun and exciting! He worked with us to create the ring of my dreams. I knew nothing about diamonds but my fiancé had done some research and could talk to Kyle in diamond terms. They then helped teach me about all the wonders of diamonds. We looked at different diamonds under the microscope and in the sunlight to pick the perfect one! I had to get my ring re-sized after the proposal and they were so helpful once again when we went in to drop it off and pick it up. It only took two days to get it back! We looked under the microscope again so we could see its beauty again and to see the special numbers engraved on the side so we can always make sure we have our diamond. Everyone is so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful here. Love this family owned business!

Well, in the Midwest, I have found, there is one on every corner. For that reason you have about another 10 locations (literally) within a 20 mile driving distance to compare it to. The fact that a small city like Ames (yes people, Ames is pretty small lol) can support two of these beasts is amazing. Coming originally from CA which, to my knowledge, have no Super WalMarts, this place was a godsend. Everything available in one place. Produce is usually pretty decent, and shelves are pretty well stocked. Do you get those special Wal Mart employees? You bet, but you get those at every Wal Mart. Cheap labor means cheaper prices, and the latter is why people come here. Having recently moved to MA, while there are super WalMarts, they don't hold a candle to this Ames (or really any other central IA) location. Dirty, poorly stocked, almost no employees around to help you. Honestly, you Ames folk don't know how stinking good you have it, and I mean that. The simple fact that you have a 24-hour store is awesome! Thank your lucky stars. You have one of the better Wal-Marts in the nation, even though you may not think it is one of the better locations in your area.

There are employees constantly making sure everything stays that way. Unfortunately, because of the mass quantity of stock, the quality is sometimes overlooked; mainly in the produce section. The produce can be hit or miss whether or not it's gone bad and just hasn't been pulled or is good with a few "bad apples". The samples are definitely a nice touch while shopping and the employees handling them tend to know about the products, thankfully. Some employees seem to do everything they can to avoid being asked a question, while others go out of their way to help you, so service can be hit or miss as well. The food court is great! Lol. The low prices for the food are awesome and the food tastes great, so win-win there! Overall, this is a clean store with quite a bit to choose from, I just wish the fresh produce was better kept up with as well as the employee interactions.

There's hookah, pipes, hemp jewelry and clothing, fun shirts, bumper stickers, face and body jewelry, the whole shebang. The owner was there and he was really nice and helpful. It's located inside of North Grand Mall. If you're from a metropolitan city then a good comparison would be to call it a small town Spencer's Gifts or Hot Topic, but it does seem to have higher quality and fairer prices than similar shops I've been to.
