Ames Silversmithing - Jewelry Near Me - Ames, Iowa

Wow! Talk about great customer service and a wonderful and special experience! This summer, my fiancé surprised me with a stop at Ames Silversmithing to pick out my engagement ring! He arranged with them to have a private viewing so we were the only ones there that was really special and kind of them to do. Kyle Youngberg made the experience so fun and exciting! He worked with us to create the ring of my dreams. I knew nothing about diamonds but my fiancé had done some research and could talk to Kyle in diamond terms. They then helped teach me about all the wonders of diamonds. We looked at different diamonds under the microscope and in the sunlight to pick the perfect one! I had to get my ring re-sized after the proposal and they were so helpful once again when we went in to drop it off and pick it up. It only took two days to get it back! We looked under the microscope again so we could see its beauty again and to see the special numbers engraved on the side so we can always make sure we have our diamond. Everyone is so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful here. Love this family owned business! read more

This used to be a good place to purchase jewelry, but those days are gone!! If I could give them a minus 10, I would not hesitate to do so as a result of my last transaction with Kyle. I took in a necklace that they had made for me years ago to request that they take my stones and put them in a ring instead. I found a rind I liked, left my stones with them, and received a call stating that I needed to bring in 1/2 of the purchase price in order to have the ring made. They had not told me that previously. I went to the store and gave them 1/2 as they had requested. Kyle was there, and I let him know that I had purchased many pieces of jewelry from them over the years and never had been asked for money down. Further, I told him that I found it offensive to have that happen this time. Kyle immediately raised his voice and said "Well, let's just cancel the sale then!"! He further stated that they want the deposit for security in case I did not pick up the ring. I said "Well, you have my stones". I tried to explain that I just was sharing my feelings about how this request and how it was different than any other time I made a purchase. I wasn't refusing to give them the deposit. They already had that in hand. He again reiterated, louder this time, that we should just cancel the sale then. A female then intervened and tried to smooth things over, because I was horrified at how I was being treated and as this continued I began to cry (which I don't easily do). She initially convinced me to continue with the sale, and I left the store. But I was so upset with the way I was treated that I went back in, told her that no one had ever treated me that way, let her know that I never wanted to deal with Kyle again, and asked for my stones and my deposit back. She gave me both and I left, incredulous that I had been so disrespected. Later that day Kyle called me and told me that he had checked their records, knew that I had purchased many things from them in the past and was never asked to pay a deposit, and offered me the ring at 1/3 off, I told him I would have to think about it. I called them back a few days later and told them that I would take the ring. I picked up the ring in early October along with an appraisal, and I did not deal with Kyle. I had the old appraisal from the necklace and compared them and noticed that part of the appraisal was missing, but was reluctant to return to the store because I did not believe I would be treated with respect if I complained about this. Also, I was unhappy with how the larger stone was set in the ring. So I waited a long time while deciding what I should do to remedy this situation and to leave this review. I believe that Kyle needs to take a comprehensive course on customer relations!!! So I took the ring and the appraisal to Gilger Designs down the street from Ames Silversmithing. They reset the larger stone for me and gave me a new appraisal that was complete. They treated me with respect, ,and I cannot praise their work and customer service enough, especially after my bad experience with Kyle. I will NEVER go back to Ames Silversmithing!! My husband took my cross necklace in with a broken chain and they fixed it on the spot for no charge. Amazing staff and so kind and generous! I love this necklace and I was so bummed when I accidentally broke the chain. I'm so happy to have it back in one piece !! Thanks Ames Silversmithing ! read more

Great service! I went in to get a few of my chains fixed and they had it done within ten minutes of walking in the door. super helpful and kind staff! read more

They are super nice here!! They always help me clean pieces for free (this is a service rarely offered by jewelers for free, especially in larger cities) and they give me good advice. To do some soldering work they charge very little or nothing and the pieces they sell are really beautiful! A guy that works there named Isaac is so friendly and very engaging. You can tell the employees really love what they do and are experienced too. I went to their competitor on the same street a few times but was overcharged compared to what Ames Silversmithing charges for the same work plus the turnaround time for their work is very fast. Many of their employees are GIA certified too. Overall I am really pleased with their service! Would highly recommend anyone living in or visiting the area to stop by :) I should post some before and after pics of their polish work because it's pretty impressive! I brought a janky bent and scuffed Tiffany cuff here and they straightened it out and buffed out the scratches super fast! This would cost you like $100 at least and take many weeks if you had Tiffany do it. Plus it was free read more

I downloaded Yelp just so I could leave this review. I recently went to Ames Silversmithing as a long shot in search for supplies, I make jewelry in my spare time. Their collection of jewelry for sale is so unique and beautiful! I wasn't sure at first if they even sold ring-stock but they were very welcoming and had just what I needed, and more! All of the associates are helpful, prompt, and kind. Every experience with them has been lovely! read more

Fantastic service. Helped me resize my watch in minutes. These guys are pros!

Let me share with the world the most fortuitous misfortune that helped me settle on where I purchased my fiancee's engagement ring. Several years ago I bought a small amethyst set for my fiancee's birthday. When one of the settings came loose, I took it to Ames Silversmithing for repair and cleaning. I stopped in to pick up the ring. It was missing. They searched and searched for it, and it was never found. They were as upset I was. They apologized profusely. They promised to make it right. While the loss of a low-cost but sentimental jewelry piece was unfortunate, they allowed my fiancee to build her own replacement ring. There was no paperwork. No hassle. Just profuse apologies and an assurance that we would be satisfied. We were immediately able to get a replacement ring that we were confident well exceeded the value of the original. Most importantly she's enjoyed it as much if not more than the first ring. I knew then that I could trust Ames Silversmithing. I'm not sure I would have had the same fast and satisfying resolution with anyone but this locally owned shop under the same circumstances. They went out of their way to make the situation right and to earn my business. Exceptional personal service. From that moment I knew when it was time to buy her engagement ring I would be doing it at Ames Silversmithing. They were helpful in explaining everything in detail on both occasions (particularly about diamonds) that we were getting rings from them and have VERY kind financing options. No interest for 6 months that was sealed with a handshake. I felt that they were exceptionally honest, upfront and working for our satisfaction. We really enjoyed the unique styles and quality work that we were able to get from a locally owned jeweler. We have been thrilled with their service ever since and have had no problems with cleanings or any other products. They tend to be a little bit more expensive than jewelers that you'll find at a mall, but the peace of mind and satisfaction we have received from Ames Silversmithing has been phenomenal. If you are in the market for jewelry in the Ames area, make them your first stop. You'll know you are going to leave satisfied from the moment you set foot in. I trust Ames Silversmithing. read more

I have had several incredible experiences with Ames Silversmithing. The downtown ma and pa Jewelry store has incredible service and very talented jewelry designers. This is the place I had my wife's engagement ring made! Now she had told me she was not really a diamond girl so I thought I would have Ames Silversmithing design a pearl ring especially for her. I wanted a classic look, but also something very beautiful... but with anything I also needed it to be in my price range! I met with a designer and we figured out the perfect ring for her! In less then a week it was created and it was absolutely beautiful and well I think she dug it cause she said yes! We also purchased our wedding rings here and I have purchased a few other items along the way here as well! Every experience was top notch and I'm still over the moon about this place! I will continue to tell friends this is the spot to go for your Jewelry needs! read more

Recently I've had three bracelets, brought in to Scott on two separate visits, need the clasps worked on to keep them from opening on their own, falling off, and being damaged or lost altogether. Now, my entire family has done business at Ames Silversmithing, beginning when it opened decades ago. But none of these three bracelets were from there; two are antiques and one was bought on a trip overseas. I brought these to Ames Silversmithing from my current home in Iowa City because I knew that they'd be repaired completely and properly there, which they were, within minutes. But both times when I tried to pay for the service Scott staunchly refused. Thanks for perfect repairs, and for graciously doing these at no charge, Scott! You, and your entire team, are top flight. read more

I happened to come to Ames Silversmithing with my friend after she had a HORRIBLE experience trying to re-size her engagement ring at another jewelry establishment that happens to be located on Main Street as well. I was completely blown away by the impeccable service the team here gave my friend. They treated her as if she had the only engagement ring in the world. I don't think anyone could ask for better customer service. If you have any jewelry needs, this is the place you need to go, hands down. read more

Excellent customer service! I've been a customer of Ames Silversmith a few times (since I now live out of the state I don't visit as much), but I was so impressed with the high level of customer service and kindness exhibited by who I think was the owner of the store last time I visited with a family member to have a ring resized that I wanted to write in support of this local business. Quality items, in-house expertise, great customer service, and kindness - what more could you ask for. I hope you visit this store. read more

I bought my fiances engagement ring in September, and had a fabulous experience! I had no prior knowledge of diamonds, settings, or anything ring related. The gal that helped me, I believe her name is Kate, was awesome! She educated me about the process, the stones, the settings. Helped me see that a larger diamond could be the same price as a smaller depending on all the different factors involved. Who knew!?! I left with a rose gold halo setting with a round diamond that my fiance and I are still amazed by 4 months later. The price was under $3000 which was perfect for my budget and left room for a couple wedding bands to complete the setting. I appreciate the fact that no one there is on a commission based salary. It made the sales experience enjoyable and leaving me wanting to come back for all future jewelry needs. When my fiance came back in to look at wedding bands, she left feeling the same way. She went as far to ask if it was ok to tip our salesman or get him a gift card from somewhere because she was so pleased with our experience that day. I graduated with Kirk from Ames High School years ago, and have known his family to be a positive influence in the Ames community. I now have first hand experience with what a great experience can be had when family works well together, and celebrates a team mentality in business. That is something I can appreciate working in my family's business as well. Choose Ames Silversmithing over any other jewler in the area. You won't be disappointed! read more

Absolutely, without any question........the BEST jeweler you can hope to work with. The custom work is fantastic. The stones they offer are one of the best selections you will find anywhere. The knowledge and experience (which is most important) is very deep. I come from San Diego to purposely do business with them. The reason I do is TRUST. I trust them. They are GIA grads as am I. I know their training, but more important.......I understand and know their passion. read more

Simply the best. They worked with me to bring a engagement ring drawing to life. They did a beautiful job, and ensured, not only the beauty of the ring, but also helped me modify the design for maximum safety for the diamond. We were able to get the wedding band to match, and everything came out beautifully. read more

This is the most reasonably priced and genuinely nice jewelry store I've ever visited. I've twice had rings serviced by the shop and have been relieved by their low prices- a fraction of what I expected to pay. Their honest prices will keep me coming back. read more

I am so impressed with Ames Silversmithing. Their service, product and professionalism rivals MANY of the jewelry stores here on the west coast where we live now. We miss their personal customer service, attention to detail and high-quality of selection that retailers lack here. Ames Silversmithing is a real Midwest gem! (Pun intended) :-) read more

So grateful for the fabulous service (and always with a smile!) I have received from Ames Silversmithing. In the last 2 years, their employees have been able to repair two different necklaces (with big sentimental value) so that I didn't have to replace the chain. I highly recommend them : ) read more

I didn't get my engagement ring from them but you'd think my ring was the only one they'd ever made. They cleaned it, sparkling, and checked the stones for me. I can't express how happy I am with them! Also went back to find a wedding band for my fiancé and the salesman was so patient and knowledgeable. Very pleased. read more

I'm from the New York area and my brother-in-law recommended Ames. I rarely write reviews but will write one for Ames - they're that good. I purchased a diamond engagement ring and could not be happier. They had incredible service, answered all of my questions and went the extra mile to include all of the features I was looking for. My fiance's (!) friends have complimented the ring, saying that it looks better than a Tiffany ring (the gold standard around here). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to share more details of my experience. Don't worry about the mail order or difficulty of long distance ordering - Ames has very good taste and will get you what you want. read more

Ames Silversmithing has outstanding customer service! I brought in some pretty low quality items that I own to see if they could be cleaned. They didn't even blink, cleaned my items quickly and thoroughly, and then didn't even let me pay them for their time! Ames Silversmithing will have all my jewelry business in the future. Thank you! read more

This place is great, and so much better than any mall store. Kyle did a great job of coaching me up on diamonds when I bought an engagement ring. My wife loves it. Great service, great expertise and very competitive prices!!! Don't go anywhere else!! read more

I can't say enough good things about Ames Silversmithing - my family has been buying jewelry here for years, so it was the first place I looked when searching out engagement rings. Their staff is helpful and accommodating, they are consistently 10-20% less expensive than the jewelers near where I live (now in D.C., grew up near Ames) and have always been great to work with long-distance. It's rare anymore to find a business that earns as much trust from their customers, and trusts their customers in return, as this place does. I'm willing to bet my fiancee looked at 500 engagement rings at 50 different stores - we've never once regretted getting her ring from Ames. read more

Kyle and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable and sincerely kind. My husband had his wedding band sized - no charge! I asked to have my mom's wedding band sized to fit my pinkie. Kyle reformed the band (back to circular) and showed me that resizing was not only unnecessary but potentially harmful to the ring. He could have resized the ring and charged me. Instead he gave me the benefit of his expertise - free! I highly recommend Ames Silversmithing for all your jewelry needs! I know I'll be back! read more

Recently moved to Ames and had a couple of things that broke and needed repaired. They were very fast, reasonable and did quality work. We recently returned to buy a setting and have a stone set and could not be happier with the service or the quality. They were very helpful in picking a setting that accentuated the stone and made me happy! They truly care about pleasing the customer, we are customers for life! read more

The best. I wanted to reset my wedding ring and had a very specific setting in mind. Kyle worked and worked with me to find exactly what I wanted. Prices are reasonable. Good value and exceptional customer service. Not going any where else in the future! read more

My boyfriend and I just left after looking at engagement rings with Kyle and it was HANDS DOWN the best experience we have had. We have been to several stores and none of them have been this awesome. Initially, looking at engagement rings can be very overwhelming. With it being such a big decision with a price tag to match, I couldn't have asked for anyone better than Kyle to guide us through the process. He was suggestive without being pushy, extremely friendly and very warm. You guys definitely earned our business when that special day comes for my boyfriend and me. read more
