YES, in my notes I have been writing 'took Da Bus to lunch'.... Sounds like it has unofficially been re-named by many of us! $2.50, flat rate, takes you ALL over the island!?!?! Frickin cool. Transfer- can be used once officially. Sometimes the driver doesnt even want to take it from your hands, you just toss it into a plastic baggie. Sometimes the driver gave me a handwave and let me use it again. Clean, hassle free, courteous drivers (for the most part)- ie, unlike SF Muni, drivers didn't try to accelerate while I was still standing with a toddler. Time-wise, the buses ran ok.. google maps didnt 100% agree on when the next bus was to arrive, but never waited longer than 10 minutes at any stop. More than I can say for MUNI... When in Waikiki... Hotel parking runs $18-36/day if not more... So... I would rent a car for the days you are going to the North Shore and other outings, but for most of the time, just take Da Bus!! Less stressful and honestly? Faster to any local waikiki destinations! Those parking structures can take 10 minutes to even get out of if you are stuck at the very top level... read more

Drivers for da bus should be commended for their nerves of steel and ability to concentrate on driving a huge vehicle safely while listening to kama'aina and visitors alike. Answering their questions, their talk story going on and on etc. Most drivers are friendly, positive, and some, like the driver today named Chuck, make a ride on the bus fun! Caught the bus at Fort de Russy Army Base. Standing room only..Chuck seemed happy with his job, getting everyone on and off..greeting, welcoming, patiently waiting for visitors to do whatever it took to get each one's money or pass presented. Bus 904 route 20 9:56 12/16/2020 im on vacation leaving the airport after dropping off luggage ,the rudest female driver and this is the second time she has been so rude! I simply asked my spouse if he got six tickets and she interrupted our conversation with a scream saying: I gave him six tickets! God! .... I about slapped the mess out of her but overall the bus drivers have been very kind and helpful to me and my family's stay for two weeks . Public transportation is sometimes one of the best ways to see a new place and TheBus is no exception. If you've got the time and patience you can even ride around the entire island of O'ahu for only $2.50. I didn't opt for that but I did use TheBus to get just about everywhere I went during my visit. All of the drivers I encountered were helpful and friendly and made sure to announce any nearby popular attractions during stops. If you want to know when the next bus is arriving at a particular location all you have to do is go to http://hea.thebus.org and put in the number of the stop and you'll instantly get a list of numbers and times of arrival. If you select a specific bus number then you'll get the times it stops there for the rest of the day. How awesome is that? Definitely do some research and plan your route because if you go someplace far afield and don't take an express you might end up spending a lot more time getting to your destination than you'd originally planned. On the upside, if you do take a local then you get to learn how to pronounce a lot of the street names from the soothing automated bus announcer. Fares are currently $2.50 with transfers good for 3 hours. You can pick up a four-day pass for $25 (cash only) at ABC stores. read more

A great way to get around the island... I feel so bad for the drivers every at stop they have to answer everybody's questions people wanting to know how to get places. Takes a ton of patients... they don't carry change so make sure you have the correct amount to change on you it's $2.50 for a one way or five dollars for the whole day make sure you let the driver know that you want a whole day pass before you put your money in the machine again you get no change back you have to have the proper amount or you're forfeiting it.. also you can down load a map of the bus schedules and map..I just want to give a shout out to all the drivers thank you so very much you are truly appreciated!!!!! read more

In January 2015, I traveled with TheBus line 19 (bus number 916) from Kuhio ave/Liliuokalani Ave in Waikiki to the airport. Upon boarding the bus, the driver informed me that I could not bring my sole suitcase on the bus if it did not fit under the seat. The suitcase is not particularly large, so thankfully it could squeeze under the seat. Now, why on earth would you have a bus from Waikiki to the airport, yet refuse to take passengers who have luggage? HNL is a major international airport, and Oahu gets millions of tourists every year. Indeed, it's their biggest industry. And obviously said tourists will have bags. Why run a service between the airport and Waikiki with all the hotels if you are not going to allow people to bring their normal-size bags that they travel with? I cannot fathom why TheBus or the airport doesn't offer a shuttle between the airport and Waikiki - a modern bus designed for tourists and their luggage. And one that doesn't stop 50 times along the way and takes over an hour, but goes straight to the Waikiki hotel zone. read more

GPS not working on some buses, need more park and ride centers and a transit center in Ewa. Monthly pass should be valid for 30 days and not the month it is purchased. Need electronic card system on buses instead of flashing your bus pass. I know it's tuff driving in Hawaii but some drivers should be friendlier and respond when greeted. read more

thank youuu the bus for replacing my legs while i was travel studying in hawai`i. buses are all very well maintained and air conditioned... so during those hot summer days you'll be glad to catch a ride with the bus. great for tourists if you are just traveling within the waikiki vicinity and to the aloha stadium... but good luck with traveling to the north shore because it'll probably take you a decade. if you are ever lost and confused about bus routes, just call in and they can help you route to your destination including giving you transfer information :) they can also give you "estimated" bus arrival time for you to plan ahead. read more

I have never felt as degraded in my entire life as when I was while relying on The Bus for transportation. I can easily say that the week or so my Lexus spent in the shop and I was forced to take The Bus was the WORST experience I've ever had. The first day of this routine alone was a torture of biblical proportions. To start, I had to walk five blocks to the bus stop in 90 degree heat with NO AIR CONDITIONING, and when I arrived I sat on the sticky remains of a soda, messing up my $100 pair of designer jeans. Ugh, there's another trip I have to make to the dry cleaners this week! By the time the bus did show up I didn't even care that it was 10 minutes late, I was just happy to have some semblance of comfort on my way to the mall where I could start to make the day a little better by getting a new pair of pants. That was until I saw there were no empty seats and I had to stand - yes, STAND, upright - in a moving vehicle holding onto a metal bar for dear life in the middle of a crowd of people who were all sorts of sad. This bus was packed with obnoxious, screaming kids, smelly people, fat people, people with no fashion sense whatsoever. I'm pretty sure a couple of them were actually real life bums! And I kept lunging forward and banging into them every time the bus came to a halt, which it did way too often because it kept making stops! I couldn't believe how much longer it took to get to my destination just because the driver insisted on stopping so much to let people on and off! Why don't these people just get their own cars already?! When I finally got off the bus, I was soaked in sweat and shame and disbelief, and I needed to go do some SERIOUS shopping to make myself right again. It was only halfway through that shopping that I realised, DOI! How am I going to carry all these bags home with me on The freakin' Bus? That first ride was the longest 20 minutes of my life, and I did not sleep easy knowing that I would have to do it all over again until I got my car back. Was getting the new spoiler and chrome-plated rims installed and the awesome flame paint job on each side even worth all this hassle and humiliation? I ask myself this question every time my mind revisits the horror of my experience with the demonic entity known as public transportation. I don't understand why anyone would put themselves through such a horrible thing even once, let alone on a daily basis. I mean, HELLO, people, buy a car! read more

If you have ever tried using buses in other cities or other places you will quickly realize that Honolulu really does have the best bus system in the world. I have ridden buses all over the world- Chicago, college campuses in IL, Europe, small islands in the Pacific like Fiji and other places. I have listened to our elected city councilmen talk about HI in general and the difficulties of transportation- there really are real reasons that the Bus works the way it does- it is a Primary solution to our traffic problems here on Oahu. How do you move the most amount of people from say Kapolei to Honolulu - the Boat just does not have the actual primary solution as not that many people can be moved quickly? There really are only a few ways to move the most amount of people on an island- the Bus just happens to be the best option right now - until flying cars are invented or teleportation or worm holes- yes - as an American I can dream but reality is I need to get to work in a reasonable amount of time and finding parking downtown takes longer than just walking to the bus station getting on and getting delivered to my desired location.It is just faster to take the bus than drive- let alone park. Also people complain about the price- I do remember when it was $1 one way with a free transfer- I understand that it is $60 a month for a month pass- that is still way cheaper than a month parking downtown in a lot or a monthly pass - let alone going to pay for gas. Yes it is less desirable than having your own car and driving exacly how and where you want - but come on?!?!?!? where else in the world can you have as many bus routes and as quickly as you do here in HI that is as nice? No where I say- you can then argue Japan- and again I say no- is there a bus in Japan that can go around the island for $2.50 - the whole island? Back to the C+C of Honolulu- the city subsidizes the bus to the tune of 80% - that is right the city picks up the cost of the bus .80 on the dollar. So it really is a bargain. I argue against small things like the bus and handivan should not be linked together in budgeting- as all buses are already handicapped equiped but that would be a seperate arguement or post. The bus though really is top notch when it comes to moving the most amount of people the quickest - expecially for work. Other small issues arise when lines are cut- best example is line B was cut year or two ago and people wanted to get to work- lines 2 and others were then packed and flooded with working people trying to get to work on time and then line 2L opened which was really a B line bus- so go figure- reality is there are tons of rules that the Bus needs to follow to run lines and get the ever shrinking federal dollar so to the public I know how it looks bad but in reality It is the best system- just nothing in life is ever smooth. Keep a happy face and make suggestions as much as possible to councilmen and know that it can be taken seriously when there is a problem. Plus side- KCC and UH have gotten more lines going into and around for them- which can only be good for more college students not to park at college and keep drinking/ driving down. Yeah! And then there is tourists- the bus really can make or break it for the little guy rying to make a go of business- think of the traffic in Haleawea if it weren't for the bus and the amount of tourists that stop off there - alone for that reason I'd keep the bus running. it does help not just the ala moana but the small stores along lines that otherwise wouldn't keep afloat. read more

I remember the first time that I saw you- you seemed so willing to be there for me, so willing to help me get where I needed to go, and it was these attributes that made you attractive. I literally less than 10 feet away from the bus stop and the driver was on the stop light which just turn RED. I stand at the door and he pointed to me wait for next bus, which the next bus is 15mins away.First driver that I ever encounter. I wish I could give zero stars. I have visited Oahu five times, and frequently used The Bus and Trolley. My past experiences have been great and I found the drivers pleasant and helpful. On June 20th this year I took the #20 bus from Waikiki (Saratoga stop) to Aloha Stadium Swapmeet. First of all, I received no greeting or acknowledgement from the driver or thank you after depositing the fare. I was tracking the bus' progress on my cellphone and felt it was taking longer than I expected. At a stop light I ask the driver what stop is for Aloha Stadium. He mumbled something, then I asked if we had already passed it. He yelled back, "We have to go past the airport then go towards the stadium!" How was I to know that. A few minutes later another passenger asked about a stop. The driver politely said he would let him know when to get off. Prior to my inquiry, another passenger asked about a stop and was again politely told he would tell him when the stop would be. Both those passengers were White males; I'm a Black female. The driver ended his shift about 3 stops after my encounter. I would give the driver the benefit of the doubt that his attitude was due to being tired, however his treatment of me compared to the other passengers was quite different. We got off at the Arizona Memorial but ended up taking an Uber to the Stadium and back to our Hotel in Waikiki because I didn't want to encounter another surly driver. What ever his problem was, I resented his raising his voice and embarrassing me in front of other passengers. If his actions were racist in nature, he shouldn't be driving a city bus! read more

My friend and I vacationed in Waikiki for five days. After arriving at the airport we took the 20 to Waikiki for $2.50 each instead of taking a $29 cab. Our bus driver was nice, and let us bring our suitcases on the bus and put them next to us the entire way. During our stay on Oahu we spent most days in Waikiki, but used thebus to get to and from North Shore one day. Throughout that day we had several different bus drivers, all of whom were very helpful and welcoming. They arrived on time and followed the bus schedules throughout the entire day. At the end of our vacation we took the 19 on thebus and had yet another great experience with Oahu's public transportation. Our bus driver was welcoming and truly seemed concerned about our trip on the bus to the airport. I have used public transportation in Orange County, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Italy, France and England, and I've never had such friendly service; thank you to the emplyees of thebus! read more

I never thought id write a review about THE BUS. It's usually just a keep to myself kind of ride. But god damn this bus drivers customer service was so on point i just had to. I usually ride the 3 to and from work. I have yet to see another bus driver say a simple "hello" to every rider, let alone say it with a smile or a laugh. From the beginning to end of my ride he had a smile and continued greeting everyone. He even announced over the speakers the important stops, which I'm sure is policy but so few ever do that. He made me feel good about not only myself, but for humanity. It's something special to put a smile on a strangers face. I asked him his name and he said his last name was Mauka. If you come to Waikiki as a tourist and want to save some money and see some sights in and around Honolulu, then at some point you'll need to take the bus. It's pretty much no frills, what you see is what you get. Waikiki is very expensive and unless you have pockets full of money, at some point in your vacation you will start figuring out where the less expensive supermarkets and restaurants are. Well, all of those places are outside of Waikiki and thus you'll need transportation to get there. The bus costs $2.50 each way with a transfer ticket issued that can be used to transfer onto another bus in the same direction but we used them as a way to get back to our hotel (round trip). The buses also remind me of the ones I used to catch as a kid in the 80s and 90s to get to school. They definitely need an upgrade!! read more

Yes, it is a little ghetto, but in terms of bus systems in America, this one isn't bad! As long as the commute is within 1 hr, it is somewhat tolerable. The problem with the bus is the timing. Certain routes don't come on time. EVER. Others are quite punctual -- coming within 5 minutes before or after the stated time. When you visit Honolulu, people will tell you you absolutely NEED a car. Well, if you are on a budget, NO. You do not ABSOLUTELY need it, but it will make everything MUCH better. The bus to the airport snakes around Honolulu, and there isn't a more direct route. However, the bus is clean, and the drivers are nice -- they will always answer your direction questions as well as they can, and they are, for the most part, quite knowledgeable about the routes. Also, if you are unsure of where exactly to get off, you can always ask the driver to call out to you when you should get off. Things you should know: 1. Only carry-on sized luggage is allowed on the bus. 2. You can use your transfer within the time it allows on any bus, even the same bus going back. 3. If there are two of you traveling together, you CAN use a $5 bill to get on. (Save your quarters for solo traveling, guys!) Also not a bad idea if you are tired, but don't feel like finding parking again, but going somewhere long enough that it is tough to walk, but short enough that you don't feel like driving. read more

The Bus is a nice, mellow, chilaxin bus. The drivers wear cool floral shirts that say The Bus on them. They are air conditioned and from what I saw not terribly crowded. Aloha. Mahalo The Bus. I like you. I rode the bus twice while I was on Oahu and I got where I needed to go. The drivers are very nice. The bus even goes on the highway! This review is for the #23 Sea life park route from Ala Moana 6:05pm - as of last week 4/23 until today, 4/30 you have not been on time. Today, 4/30 you missed the stop completely. I figured there was some traffic, that's understandable. But no, when I called the customer service (which if you look at the sign on the bus stop, it's purposely blocked so you can't dial the number directly and if you don't have a smart phone, you wouldn't know their number starts with 848) which was completely unhelpful. He told me that the bus had left already and FYI, I've take the 23 home M-F for the past 4-months and have never "missed" a bus because I didn't catch it. Liar. So, here we are about 15 people waiting for the 6:05p bus and I tell the customer service guy who 1. doesn't want to tell me the bus number (which was 921) 2. tells me that the buses don't have gps (which is fine I wasn't asking for the exact location) 3. tells me that I'm wrong and I missed the bus. How the hell did all of us miss the bus? Freaking ridiculous. There is one "regular" 23 bus driver who I miss dearly because he was always on time. Hope they see this and put him back to work. You need more workers like that guy. If I see him, I'll give him a shout out. I normally love the bus, but these past few days have sucked. 20 minutes late, 30 minutes.. now completely just miss the stop. On top of that, emailed Customer Service and you know damn well they won't write back. read more

The Bus is a joke if you plan to use it for any length of time or need to get anywhere on time. If you're on vacation and don't mind taking twice as long to get anywhere give it a shot; $2.50 to ride and it will get you most places on the island- however, be warned: The majority of passengers are rude and the drivers are rude. Every work day it takes me 45-55 minutes each way to go 4 miles from my house to downtown- that's almost an entire shift each week spent sitting on the bus! In a car the commute takes maybe 15-20 minutes. Good luck to anyone trying to find a seat anytime from 7am-7pm. If you do manage to get a seat, unless it's in the very back, chances are you'll relinquish it to a senior within two stops as very few other passengers will be courteous to offer their seat to those in need. Don't worry about bringing your own music; someone on the bus will have their iPod blaring through their ear buds and sharing it with the entire bus as they ruin their hearing. There will also be charming individuals who think their purse deserves its own seat and will give you dirty looks when you dare suggest you move it so you can sit there. Then you have the line cutters; the ones who show up just as the bus arrives and manage to squirm their way to the front of the boarding line and cut in front of those that have been waiting 15 minutes for a bus. The line cutters while rude are a step above the "I haven't showered all week" passengers who share their most personal and pungent bodily aroma with the entire bus. The seat stealers are the worst breed of them all. These foxy passengers will wait until you get up from the aisle seat to let the window passenger get off, creating the rare and elusive open window seat. The seat stealer will forcefully insert themselves into the window seat without giving you the opportunity to claim it; it's even worse when a second seat stealer then steals your aisle seat. To combat these seat stealers, passengers have developed the "turn and swivel" where the aisle seat passenger will turn and swivel in their seat to allow the window seat passenger out. This is great fun to watch, especially if the window seat passenger is carrying a number of bags and attempts to not hit the aisle passenger in the face with them. Of course being jammed on a bus filled with all these colorful characters it can cause even the most mild manner tempers to flare. There's nothing quite like having a fight break out in an enclosed vehicle traversing the tropical island streets of Oahu at 30mph. While my work may sometimes be boring, my commute certainly isn't when the woman behind me gets punched in the face! As to be expected with such a large and smooth running operation, The Bus customer care center loves to hear your complaints, comments, and suggestions. They'll let you send them via e-mail and will even take the time to send you back a form letter pretending they actually read what you wrote. Great customer service! Long story short, avoid the bus if at all possible. Get a car instead. You won't be helping create a green planet and reduce your carbon foot print, but at least you'll have your sanity. read more

This USED to be a fantastic system. Lately it has become the worst, unpredictable, false GPS and has been dangerous. Do not count on this system to get you anywhere, and do not count on the times. If you are in an unsafe area and the bus says it's coming.. Don't count on it as you may find yourself in danger such a shame and a sham. read more

You're probably reading this review only because you also take the bus or are thinking of taking the bus. It's not like it was when I was a kid and it's not a quarter anymore either. Did I just date myself??? I take the bus to and from work every now and then. It's convenient, fairly fast, and gives me lots of time to catch up on emails, reading, and watching flix. I took the bus from downtown to koko marina once. That took 25 only minutes. Just as long as it would take to drive in a car but without the road rage and stress of rush hour traffic. I'm in the bus now to kaneohe from town. Taking me 30 minute, in friday traffic. I have two big peeves: 1) stinkyness - I like to take a cloth to drape over the seat cuz you never know what or who sat there before you. When you do choose a seat, make sure you sniff then sit. The buses have cloth seats instead of plain old plastic so they can absorb lots of different smells..... 2) when the bus is not on time and especially when it leaves early. Why can't buses stick to a schedule especially when they're early? Now that there's an app, I can keep track better but it still has bugs. One big hint: Move to the back of the bus. Transit service is horrible!! Buses are late and drivers don't announce the stops!! We missed our stop because he didn't announce it, we spent an hour and a half in the bus only to turn around and get an Uber. We will stick to Ubers!! read more

Da Bus is awesome. Who doesn't love Da Bus? I agree TheBus should be renamed to Da Bus because it adds more local and Hawaiian kind flavor swag. I've been to this terminal a couple times. Overall, I do not think how this island state can function if it weren't for The Bus. Riding the bus is a necessity for anyone and everyone on the island. If you haven't rode on The Bus then you haven't experience Hawaii/Oahu. Riding the bus is truly a local experience. I have been riding the bus ever since I was young from growing up small kid time to a young adult as I am now. Even though I have a car, I still ride The Bus. Gas prices are on a ridiculous high. You can save so much money by riding Da Bus. I remember when the prices for the bus was only 50 cents. Now it's $1.25 for kids and $2.50 for adults. If you catch The Bus regularly, bus passes are so worth it for unlimited rides depending on which one you get. The Bus drivers are always cool and nice and very helpful as well. Fellow bus riders should learn and respect and thank them afterwards. Riding the bus can be an interesting experience depending on which route you take and bus you catch. Transfers are always life savers. If it weren't for transfers, riding and taking the bus would not be so cool. I am glad they have that option for fellow bus riders. Ala Moana and the state capitol are prime locations for transfers and taking the bus. You can pretty much find any bus that goes around the island from there. This issue is more of a pet peeve because the Bus system allows people in wheelchairs and mobility scooter to ride the bus for the same low price as seniors and handicapped people who can walk short distances on their own. When a wheelchair or scooter rider rides the bus instead of riding the HandiVan, the driver must ask at least five riders to give up their seats. The wheelchairs takeup three horizontal seats as well as two aisle-window seats and forces riders to either stand or hunt for anther seat, which is most often unavailable. These riders in wheelchairs must pay $2.00 a ride on the HandiVan but only $1.00 on the bus, so this is probably whey they don't use the HandiVan service. It would be better to charge them the same price ($2.00) to ride the bus, especially when they take 5-seats. read more

This is one of the best public bus systems I've encountered in my travels. We did rent a car for part of our trip to Oahu, but after discovering the bus, we didn't need it anymore. On one trip, for $2.50, I went from Waikiki to the North Shore to the eastern side of the island, and the stops were all on time, every stop. It was also a great way to meet some wonderful locals. As a tourist, maybe I only got part of the picture, since I don't have to take this everyday. However, as a tourist, it was one of the easiest and most enjoyable transportation systems I've experienced. The website for routes & times is excellent & accurate, and performs flawlessly with Google Transit. The transfers are easy, the drivers polite. Awesome in every way. read more

The recent changes may have caused problems as people have said. I used the bus 2 from Waikiki to downtown and it was packed on non rush hour times and also 30 minutes late as well. Awful. Not as good as in the past. read more

The bus is great for long distance traveler's. However, for the short distance in town transportation, (in my opinion) it's not useful!! For short rides (in town), the bus is way too expensive, takes way too long, and causes more traffic problems. Recently, I became ill and couldn't drive my vehicle. So, I had to take the bus. From my residence in downtown to Manoa; by way of car it takes me a total of 30 minutes from the time I walk out my door to reaching my destination. By way of bus; it took me 90 minutes. The actual drive itself takes 15 minutes by car and 60 minutes by bus. One Round trip fare comes out to $5. $60 per month if you buy the pass. I don't spend more than $100 on gas per month because I walk alot. Therefore, the bus is not worth it to me!! I wish we had the hop on and off trolly's or shuttles, and these would run more frequently for the shorter distance rides. Many times the large buses are less than 1/2 full, hog the lanes on the road causing more traffic problems, and sucks up more gas transporting only a hand full of people. With smaller trolly's or shuttles running more frequently (and on time) I may stop using my vehicle all together... Just my opinion.... read more

Hawaii is expensive. Even if you do it cheap, it is expensive. When visiting you could waste your money on a fancy airport shuttle. I take TheBus. Line 19 takes you from the airport straight to Waikiki beach, and line 22 will take you from the beach to the amazing Hawaii Kai Costco and Hanauma Bay. Save your money for other things---on Oahu take The Bus when you want to relax. read more
