FANTASTIC! There are many cafe options in Hanover. We, thankfully, decided to try The Works. Excellent lattes. I had one of the best sandwiches of my life there - and I'm 63 years old. The roasted artichoke melt sandwich was absolutely spectacular! Roasted artichoke hearts, provolone, baby spinach, tomatoes, and pesto on sourdough bread. Inspired! In fact, everything was delicious. I love the Works at both locations, here at the Dartmouth campus and also at the DHMC. The bagels are fresh and tasty and I love their selection of schmears: veggie, herb, scallion, naturally-cured no nitrate/nitrite bacon scallion, maple raisin walnut or tofutti. They have a jalapeño cheddar bagel here that I love. There is nothing like their mac and cheese. It's rich and super creamy. I always get the same thing here. which is not on the menu. It's a mash-up I highly recommend. Order the Bacon avocado power bowl ... but on a bagel *without* quinoa. You will never be the same! :) I get a bagel and then they add one local cage-free hard boiled egg, naturally-cured no nitrate/nitrite caramelized bacon, baby spinach, tomatoes, sriracha and sweet chili sauce. It's all of the ingredients of the bowl without the quinoa and on a bagel. read more

This place has the WORKS! Need breakfast? They have muffins, bagels, and coffee. Want a more filling lunch? They have sandwiches, salads, and soups. Want a post workout pick me up? They have smoothies and juices. When I saw how large the menu was, I was skeptical. And I think they made it work... kind of. I got the artichoke sandwich which was a unique combo but it really tasty. The cheese paired well with the artichoke and didn't overpower it. My only complaint is that the bread got pretty soggy and fell apart. This place has plenty of seating if you want to sit and study. However, even tough it was pretty empty my order took a while to make. Next time I'd order ahead for pickup instead. Overall, there are a few options to choose from in this area and this isn't a bad one. But, it wouldn't be my first choice to go back to. read more

Seems to be confusion with the staff. Plastic gloves are meant to protect the food from contaminants, not their hands from the food. Must be an unpleasant place to work. We had the Bacon Avocado bowl which arrived warm, a pleasant surprise to a cold early afternoon; Chicken Melt sandwich was perfectly toasted with warm grilled chicken and of course melted cheese. The Green Machine smoothie was another pleasant surprise for its thick ingredients, can't remember if there was Oak Milk but it was lightly sweetened with no residual veggies tastes. Cute cafe in a perfect neighborhood. I imagine the Dartmouth students and faculty must frequent this place. Great location. Surprisingly not air conditioned, or maybe the day I went, the air wasn't blowing high (came on one of the super hot days of August). Of course that always turns your stomach when it's not cool and refreshing. And there was a man putting up signage (new menu signs?) while they were making my order. The ladder was directly over the sandwich making area and I was nervous about how clean his crocs were being inches from my sandwich. That being said, our sandwiches were absolutely delicious. The young man that took our order was super friendly and patient. The ingredients in our sandwiches were super fresh, for being so late in the day, and my sourdough bread was incredible. It seemed like it was freshly baked hours ago. Overall, I would order from this establishment again, but probably not eat there (we got take out) and try not to notice my surroundings as much! The staff committed several health code violations/cross contaminating surfaces, touching meats then veggies for different orders without changing gloves or washing hands. As a professional chef I almost walked out but I was starving and I needed what sandwich that I know and love to be on point. It was not. Sourdough was nice n fresh, ingredients fresh but cleanliness and sanitation were a big issue tonight on Saturday. The Works could be so much better but have little incentive to be so. They are in the heart of Hanover and convenient to students and locals alike. The concept is terrific; Good, healthy food. Lots of variety for all appetites and diets. Breakfast, bowls, wraps, etc. The bagels are better than most in the area but way too soft. Almost squishy. They don't hold up well to anything, least of all cream cheese spread. We were excited to see a cream cheese and lox schmear. Alas. The biggest problem was neither the cream cheese nor the salmon had any flavor. It was creamy but non-descriptive and tasteless, which made for a weird mouth feel. It looked like it had smoked salmon in it but you couldn't taste it. We also ordered coffee until discovering a small was 2.99... Before tax! I lost my thirst ASAP. Needless to add, we did not have coffee. Pity. The space is cozy and inviting. The staff is nice but seem quite inexperienced. read more

The ambience was also good, and was not too loud, given the fact that there were a lot of people there. They also have very nice seating options, like a couch and some armchairs. Meh. The works is a busy, quick-stop restaurant in downtown Hanover. Their business model is much like McDonald's: you order your to go meal at the counter, they call out your name, and you take your plastic-wrapped meal to a table or out the door. This isn't the kind of place you will want to lounge or eat a relaxed meal, the turnover is very fast. More importantly, the food is not great. They serve bagels, wraps, sandwiches, bowls, and plastic cups of fruit. We came with a big family of eight, and the adults left over most of their food. Was really excited to try this place out. Awesome look to the place and an awesome menu. Unfortunately every staff member there looked so depressed to be there. My husband and I got lattes that were cold somehow despite the steamed milk. I asked for oat milk and got regular that I cannot drink so the temperature didn't matter anyway. Idk.. I really like this place. I've only been there twice for breakfast but I definitely want to try more lunch items in the future. They have a perfect bacon/egg/cheese on a bagel. It's so flavorful but simple. I love the onion bagel, it's soft and chewy. I really like their coffee too. I am an iced coffee drinker and they offer one large sized iced coffee. My only criticism is that they give you the plastic cup of ice and then you go to a carafe and fill the coffee yourself. The first time I went, the iced coffee carafe was empty so I had to go up to the counter and ask for some more. They had to take some time to brew a fresh batch; while I appreciate its freshness, I was surprised they didn't have a system of checking the status of the carafe batch in use, and prepping another batch so it's immediately ready to go. It probably has to do with freshness and wastefulness, but i'm not totally sure. Everyone was friendly and I can't wait to try some different menu items. read more

Maybe three is a charm? My other two experiences have not been great. Dining out (for me) has two primary components: food and service. The service at The Works Cafe is top notch. Caring and accommodating. Innovative and thoughtful. I really appreciated their staff. The food was the disappointment. For the second time, I bought a salad that did not live up to my expectations: chicken salad with very little chicken, a ton of lettuce and other greens that looked dated, and ingredients that were pickled rather than fresh. For example, I prefer fresh red peppers rather than whatever version of a vegetable that was served in their place. I am going to try again. The Works Cafe has such a strong reputation. the works is usually ok but today. It made me reconsider everything. I ordered a tropical sunrise smoothie no orange juice no pineapple so it would be mango and banana. Whoever made it didn't understand smoothies. It was water with chunks it was not refreshing at all. Their food is ok but they have good bagels.
