This was a great spot on my trip to Vermont. I heard so many good things about the downtown area with all the shops and places to eat. The Works popped up as the spot to go to for breakfast. We ended up getting a couple of breakfast sandwiches and drinks. I got a chai latte with my sandwich and it was delicious. The sandwich was great from top to bottom. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the bagel had that great NYC style. Service was quick and friendly and they made sure everything was correct when I ordered. The vibes here are very fitting for Vermont. It felt like a cozy little coffee shop but also had a bit of a modern touch. The booths were comfortable and there was even a corner for kids to hang out in. If I ever find myself back in Vermont, this is where I'll stop for breakfast. read more

We stopped here for lunch and found the food to be solid and filling. A good option for lunch and drinks. There is a variety of smoothies, pastries, bagels, bowls and sandwiches. Actually, a pretty big menu for a bakery cafe. The tuna melt was good with thick bread. I had the farmers veggie sandwich, which was also good, except for too much honey mustard dressing. My only knock, was that I felt the food and drinks were over-priced. But, maybe that is what food costs in Brattleboro. read more

This is prob 3.5 but can't do 1/2 stars. Nothing wrong at all just not notable. Met here for lunch and it was as expected from another location of The Works that I have been to. This time I got an egg ham cheese on blueberry bagel. Meal was fine - no issues. My friends are gluten free and they ordered off the menu with no problems and had sandwiches made with GF bread. They thought the staff did a good job managing food allergies. This location does not use plates for dine-in sandwiches etc. The other location I go to gives plates for dine-in. It was not an issue just something I noticed. We were all given our food wrapped up and we just unwrapped it and ate them over the paper wrap. *There is a parking lot out the back entrance. Make sure you pay for the parking at the kiosk and display your ticket. And do not be late! The parking officer was closely checking cars the entire time and I was shocked by how many people had tickets for being over time. read more

Heard this was one of the best places for brunch in the area. I think I might have ordered the wrong thing but I thought the food here was very mediocre. Got here during early lunchtime on a weekend and the place was packed. Hard to get a seat even for only two people. I ordered the Gourmet Mac & Vermont Cheddar because I wanted to see if I could taste the difference in the cheese quality. Turns out it's a very normal mac and cheese, definitely better than that from a box but nothing too mind-blowing. I thought it would be on Beecher's level (in Seattle) if you've been to that place before or bought products from them at Costco. I did appreciate the eye breadcrumbs though. Overall, okay place for brunch. Would definitely come earlier and try something a bit different next time - maybe their sandwiches or grain bowls. read more

The Millennial Chum and I made this the first official stop on our VT adventure, taking a much-needed break from the road after crossing the border into the Green Mountain State. Brattleboro looked to have an actual downtown (this stretch of 91 was pretty rural, so civilization as it were seemed hard to come by) with eating options a little over halfway to our destination so it was a natural fit. The Millennial Chum picked this place after seeing it across the street, remarking that it looked pretty popular with mainstream breakfast-y options. Hard to argue. In a lot of ways (not an insult), this feels very much like a chain - reminiscent of a Bagelsmith (which might not have extended its regional tentacles this far north from the NJ area). There are TONS of options, and you can understand why a lot of tourists/travelers passing through would stop here; it's fast casual and will almost undoubtedly have something you like. We got there right around lunchtime and just missed a gigantic line, which was pleasing. We'd only been in Vermont for a few minutes, so we were still adjusting to the fact that everyone kind of looks a little like Bernie Sanders, especially the street musicians outside. Anyway. I was pretty famished from our journey so I got an egg and cheese sandwich with Vermont Cheddar (when in Rome) on sourdough, along with an intriguing looking cinnamon chip scone with maple drizzle. The sandwich was decent but a little too greasy/messy. I finished most of it though, save a few crusty scraps. The Cheddar was definitely a strong flavor so if you have issues with the cheese dominating the egg, this is not the option to get. I was a bigger fan of the scone, which probably would have been pretty run of the mill if they hadn't included the maple drizzle - perfect complement to the cinnamon. It didn't last long. The one real negative here was the disorganization/service behind the counter. It took close to 20 minutes to get our food, which as brunchy options go was pretty low maintenance. The Millennial Chum got a smoothie and a pickle (literally just a pickle). One thing I noticed is that the woman behind the counter had difficulty anticipating the use of bags, which kept making each order more time consuming. As an example, she had an order of five breakfast sandwiches, four of which were ready earlier than the fifth. Instead of asking or even assuming that a bag would be needed (and how could it not? The sandwiches outnumbered the person who ordered them by four!), she just had them piled up at the counter. When the fifth came, the person...asked for a bag. So that took an extra 20-30 seconds of moving around, looking for a bag, and finally putting each sandwich carefully into the bag. And the two or three customers after this also ended up asking for a bag once their orders were ready to go. They could really use some management in that regard, which would make a big difference during the busier times of the day. I'd forego this place in the future and go to one of the nearby options, even if you have to contend with a smaller menu. read more

The Works is a great cafe/breakfast spot downtown Brattleboro VT. I am in VT visiting family this week and this place is a great! I hit this place up every morning as they are the only game in town that opens early (6am). Staff were great, friendly, and fast. The morning staff were just awesome, and I was able to joke around with them a bit as my name is kinda strange. Was so glad this place was here! Totally recommend if you are in-town and need a good, inexpensive coffee shop experience with good breakfast options. Ambiance is clean, bright, comfy, seating with outlets for laptops, and some comfy chairs to chill in. While in Brattleboro yesterday my friend and I stopped by The Works for some lunch. This looks like the type of place that offers everything, sandwiches, salads, smoothies, the works... I decided on the Smoked Salmon bowl. The inside is all wood and very cozy looking. There's a cute little nook by the window, with pillows where you can sit with your warm drink and tasty food. Also they have a kids sized bench for little ones to sit at. The space is full of large windows which allows lots of natural light. My Salmon bowl came out pretty quickly, it's base was quinoa, a few slices of avocado, a hard boiled egg with pesto, maybe two spoon fulls of diced tomato, and a generous chunk of smoked salmon. I got coffee, but it's self serve which is never my favorite. This was a very protein rich and filling salad, the tomato was the perfect thing to include, the seasoning in it was a great blend with quinoa, but there was a very small amount of tomato. Everything else was a bit bland and flat, but the tomato. I appreciate the avocado, it was fresh and soft. The salmon was fresh, but very bland and flavorless. I'm not a fan of asking for modifications in my meals. However, by just adding more tomato this would have been much more flavorful and satisfying. As it is I'm giving it three stars. The coffee was just fine, it filled my need for coffee. I got the hazelnut kind. It was just ok, a bit too watery. The Works is a cute spot in downtown Brattleboro, they have many things to choose from. When I'm in the area again, I might stop here for their Mac & Cheese. read more

Since I'm always dubious of places that offer NY style bagels (since I am from NY) I opted for the power ancient grain bowl with quinoa, hard boiled egg, smoked salmon, tomato and pesto. My friend had a breakfast burrito. The bowl was good, but the proportion of grain to toppings was off and not enough pesto so you end up with a lot of dry quinoa. Coffee was decent. Indoor and outdoor seating and reasonably quick service. I'd go back and the three stars is mostly because it wasn't a memorable meal. read more

Solid stop on the way back from Stowe. I got lox/salmon on a bagel, and my partner got at the salmon quinoa bowl. Came out pretty quickly despite it being busy. Lots of open seating inside and a few spots outside along the street. Staff were super friendly. Only giving this 3 stars as we yelped coffee shop and although we got coffee, it's the self serve kind after you buy a cup which is never my favorite to be fair. This place could be so good. They use local ingredients, including fresh sprouts, lettuce, and eggs. Breakfast and lunch. They have pretty good baked goods and coffee. The space is inviting and the regular crowd is all kinds of locals and tourists dropping in. Good place to get some writing done it meet up for as lunch date. They even have a kids table and lounge with a little chalkboard. They need to fix their menu and improve the quality of some of their ingredients and the way It gets portioned and served. I've seen similar reviews from other customers. It seems like the owners are absent and it has been on autopilot for a long time. First thing is the chicken. I ordered the Cobb Salad with "all natural chicken". It was some kind of rib meat patty, kinda slimy and didn't seem like meat. Just grill some breast, throw it in a cooler, cut it up and don't give people whatever that was, please. Also on my salad was a ball of goat cheese almost the size and shape of tennis ball. How am I supposed to eat that? Portion control, maybe crumble it up a bit so I don't have to try and figure that out with plastic silverware in a to-go bowl. They were out of the avocado dressing that they put on it (a salad that already has unripe sliced avocados on it) so I decided to get lemon vinaigrette instead. When it came out it had Caesar on it. Good greens underneath but I couldn't mix it in the tiny bowl under all the other proteins (hardboiled eggs, "chicken", greasy but delicious bacon, and goat cheese). I could only really get to it after eating my way through, and by the time I got there I was too full and disgusted to eat the baby chard and mesclun. It seems like a cool concept for a restaurant where the owners are not really chefs and have never tried half the dishes. Maybe just got high and came up with a menu and ordered some things and put it all together to make a restaurant, and haven't been back since except to keep hiring kids. I came in in the first week of October on a rainy day and the AC was cranked up to the max. Everyone inside has their jackets on and the staff are wearing thermals under their work tees. When I asked if they could turn it down as notch, one person didn't know, and another said they couldn't touch the AC. I'm like, it's fall. I came back the next day when there was a manager on duty and had to ask a few more people just to get him to turn it down. Now it's nice in here. Tried again with the "southwest chicken burrito" which was gross too. Won't be back except for coffee. read more

Getting there in the morning beats the lines. The food is good particularly the quinoa bowl. For me, this is really a treat because I find it expensive. The wait is generally 20 mins whether or not there is a line. I once ordered a small Mac and cheese and it arrived 20+ minutes later, cold. At other times, the wait is normal. This place can be flummoxing but you just have to find out how to navigate the line and when to arrive. read more

Today I ordered a super chicken panini to go and picked it up. I did the responsible thing and only took three napkins, then left with my food. When I got home, the sandwhich was so poorly made, the bread was torn in three places, sauces was coming out everywhere (I did not order extra sauce). It was messy, there was a TON of chicken on one side of the sandwhich and half a piece on the other. I couldn't eat it at all without getting so messy I needed many more than the three napkins I took. I do not honestly think a sandwhich could be prepared THIS POORLY unless it was intentional. This wasn't even a rushed job, the bread was torn, the chicken was all on one side, sauce was everywhere. And yes I tipped them. I don't think I'll be tipping them for a while. I am stuck home with a broken foot and ankle. Since I'm on crutches, I can't go grocery shopping. I'm basically SOL for a couple weeks. So, the Works Cafe was going to be a literal life-saver for me. Friday Dec 22nd, I ordered 4 items on Doordash. Only 1 item arrived- a greek salad (and it did not even taste good- wilted lettuce, soggy cucumbers and tomatoes). I called the store and the guy who answered could not provide an explanation how this happened and could not do anything about it. I called DoorDash and was only able to get a partial refund. So that ended up being a $21 salad when all was said and done. Saturday Dec 23rd, I gave the works cafe another shot. I ordered a bunch of things on DoorDash- 2 different bagels with different cream cheeses, a side of bacon, a kale chicken ceasar salad, a chocolate peanut butter smoothie, a banana, a big fruit cup, a chai, and a pastry. This food was going to last me through the weekend and get me through my basically bedbound christmas. Knowing what happened the day prior, I called the store immediately and asked the staff member to confirm that they got the full order. I asked her to read me the full order, she kindly obliged. The order arrived, and the big fruit cup was still missing. Even after confirming. The chicken on the salad was pink/grey and some of the greens looked brown/slimy. The shake was the consistency of water. The chai was awful. The banana was green and won't be ready to eat for days. There were 2 tiny bites of bacon in a cup. The only thing salvageable were the bagels. I called the store to see what happened here and to see what they can do. Nothing. 60something bucks down the drain. I am not one to usually complain- I worked in and managed restaurants for over a decade. I know mistakes happen. But twice in a row, plus after confirming directly with staff, just sucks. A standard good practice would be to send a gift card for the multiple inconveniences. Even if the customer doesn't want it- offer it. You do SOMETHING to make it right. read more

So I wanted to explain that I rarely leave reviews for businesses but felt I needed to explain why I was upset with this cafe. I'm a born and raised New Yorker and unapologetically so. No matter what your feelings are about bagel sandwiches, we New Yorkers incorporate them in our daily lives. I ordered a classic BEC (bacon egg and cheese) on an everything bagel. They called the everything bagels "the works bagels" which is annoying but none of my business. It's their establishment, they can name the food items what ever they want. What started my unpleasant experience at The Works Bakery was the fact that they didn't have American cheese. I understand that American cheese is gross and filled with nasty preservatives but you can't have a egg sandwich without American cheese. It should be illegal. On to my others issues. I found a surprise hair in my eggs which I'm pretty sure were liquid egg beaters. I went to the counter to ask for a new sandwich when a couple behind me asked if masks where mandatory. I know they are because a large sign out front says masks are required in this town. The employee told them it's fine to just take them off. I don't care which side your on in this debate but masks are mandated in this town and it's not up to the employees to decide who does and does not have to wear masks inside this cafe. The Works was very busy when I visited but that told me that this place was good, and it is! I ordered the Chocolate Peanut Butter smoothie and it's delicious! The cashier seemed a bit overwhelmed (I'm sure from the hustle and bustle) but the lady who gave me my smoothie was very friendly. The bathrooms are clean but not entirely stocked. Great food and smoothies! My only negative is today while sharing a cookie with my daughter (which was awesome minus the next detail) I found myself chewing on a staple. I don't think the staple was baked into the cookie but the cookie was just thrown in my bag without a wrapper so I'm assuming the staple was in my bag. I'm super happy I found the staple and not my 4 year old who probably would have swallowed it. I understand wanting to reduce waste but for the safety of all consider wrapping your cookies or not putting loose staples in the bag that touches unwrapped food.
